    For those that have not been to Sundown, the Rat's Castle run in the last part of the video is genuinely steep and with very deep axle twisters. A video as always doesn't do it justice. Nice work boys. Cheers

    Very nicely done video. Probably the best LR4 off-road review I have seen.

      Cause you have a 5cylinder legendary engine under the hood (VM MOTORI made in Italy) one of the most reliable engine known in the off-road world.
      You have solid axles, you have no electronic nannies, to be simple is the key to almost touch perfection, you have a legend in your hands, do not sell it!!!!!
      The LR4 is a wonderful machine, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't trust it in the middle of no where for weeks.
      Go and check "Camel Trophy Land Rover years" it's a video on UA-cam that explains the reason why you should hold on tight to your TD5.
      Watch that video, trust me, you'll love it.

    What tyre pressure are you using on the Silver LRD at 13:40?. Also what tyres are those? ( are low profile 20inch?). My order arrives next month for a new SETD6 with capability Pack. Looking forward to trying it out.

    • @sienaoverland
      @sienaoverland  7 років тому

      The silver one was on 20" Nitto Terra Grapplers. They did not handle the rocky conditions very well & I would not recommend them for this terrain. Some of the other tracks were not as steep but rockier and more than one tyre was slashed, with one cut enough to go flat. From memory pressure was around 28 psi which is probably a bit low for these tyres. However they are good for most situations and surfaces, just beware that the sidewalls are relatively weak. The other two of us are on 18" LT rated KO2s, which had no issues.

      @leighwilson1524 7 років тому

      Thank you Scott. I watched a Landrover sponsored video of a very rough track in Africa and the Discovery's 20" tyre they put their pressure up and the Defenders down. No punchers . They make KO2s at 20" so I will try them first and maybe try the Comp 18" later if they fit on 2017 models. I really enjoy you videos maybe you could do one on your Off road/camping set up for us new to JLR. I have done one 4x4 video at Monkey Gum Nowra with my son. If you have time, have a look. Thanks again

      Leigh, the Compo's do fit as do the new steel wheel option; "Tuffant" This is the only steel wheel that is legal for Australia. www.tuffant.com/ I have seen one test fitted to a D5. KO2's in 20" are also a good option if you don't want extra wheels.

    It seems a bit of fun with family, do you like the hill descent? I often find Low 1 or 2 is much more easy, and I have more control over descent. Mud slide is a big headache since you lost control. All terrain response or hill descent don't help much until it found a solid ground. Cheers,

    Were johnson rods or similar fitted in addition to the raised 4wd mode?

    • @sienaoverland
      @sienaoverland  3 роки тому

      No not required for this track, although we all do have the Llams module to have better control over suspension height. A much better option than rods. For this track just factory offroad height was required.

    Scott,
    Thanks for the videos, it is great seeing these cars do what they were deigned to do.
    I noticed 1 of them has stock 19" rims. Can you please let me know how this has compared with the 18"? i.e. have the 19" rims stopped you going somewhere the 18" has. I a not convinced it is worth the $ changing them over. The 19"'s have done me well so far but I am about to wear the stock tyres down do need to know what to invest in as I go to an all-terrain.

    • @sienaoverland
      @sienaoverland  7 років тому +2

      Andrew, in this video there are two of us on 18" KO2s and one on 20" Nittos but in other videos you will say a mate on 19" tyres and he's now on the 19" Maxxis 980. There is no doubt that the 18s are better but that is mainly due to the tyre rather than the wheel. The KO2s are LT rated and there are other LT rated tyres in 18". The 19s and 20s are able to go to all the same places and handle the same terrain but the tyres suffer a lot more if it's rocky. My mate on 20's got a flat on the tough rocky ground on that Sundown trip. Your ability to reduce pressure and still protect the wheel rim is reduced with 19s and 20s. So it's a difficult decision because you can certainly go everywhere on 19s but the risk of tyre/wheel damage is higher. My mate on 19's has driven section better than me sometimes because of better line selection or just following someone else, so there's plenty of other factors than just the wheel/tyre combo. If I was you, being unsure and only coming off the stock HT tyres, I would stick with 19" and try the Maxxis 980. This is the only LT spec I am aware of in 19" and hugely better than what you've had. See how that goes and if you are happy stick with it and if not, go for the 18". I am still happy to have gone to 18" but back when I was deciding the 19" tyre choice was pretty hopeless.

    • @andrewhealey8567
      @andrewhealey8567 7 років тому

      Awesome reply, thanks Scott. I'll have a look at the Maxxis 980's, but have also read the Goodyear Duratrac's are pretty good for the Disco...it seems these days there is a choice!

    • @sienaoverland
      @sienaoverland  7 років тому

      Agree that is another good option. The Duratrac can be hard to source and quite a lot more expensive too.

    • @mijangoz
      @mijangoz 6 років тому

      Great discussion thread guys! I have 19’s and the stronger walls from a LT tyre are v attractive, mostly for when travelling on outback unsealed tracks, but for rockier sections like this too. I’ve just put on new Kankook’s AT tyres, so will be looking keenly at the Maxxis 980s next time round

    • @sienaoverland
      @sienaoverland  5 років тому +2

      No failures in my experience. Most of the more common issues as the vehicles ages are mechanical wear or aging of plastic components. The electronics seem very reliable with the occasional issue being corrosion in connector plugs.

    believe it or not i drive exactly this kind of road twice a week on harvest time and sometimes we even drive mid size 2WD truck up and down the mountain...as for me i drive 90's landrover defender with 32inch simex tire with stock car height and no other mods....and somehow it seems my old vehicle includes my midsize truck does little bit better than this LR4 in this video....im not saying im a good off road driver...but im confuse isnt the LR4 suppose to be better than my old vehicle? im saying this due to high number of traction loss the LR4 does...while my old car had very little and almost no traction loss at all on this kind of road when its dry like in the video..

    • @chaquisa1
      @chaquisa1 4 роки тому

      You dont need flex with these.When one wheel is off the ground more drive is programmed for the one on the ground whilst the one off the ground has downward pressure applied .much the same as a live axle but more effective in reality than difflocks

    i have 2010 2.7 will build a stronger trans belly guard for it, we have a lot of hard going like this in QLD Au and this driver is going too fast, bet it is not his disco Also lo lo rock crawl mode the throttle by wire is not good, touch the pedal and it leaps fwds , so better in lo 3 or lo high But I 've no interest in these sort trails, to expensive to fix, did all that 55 years back, besides never have people rock spottin' for me
    first LR series one 1957, series 11a busted axles, series 3 same, clutches every 15000miles gearbox overhauls do em in my sleep, best was 2000td5 drove all over Eu, in the mud in Serbia in the snow, the beat of the 5cyl engine was great pulling hard on the autobahn at 130 km/h, D4 is luxury but LR stuffed it with a v6 that is impossible to work upon and the 3l engine it;s body off to get at the turbos, i do not trust my d4

I bought a good diagnostic tool but that only points one, will not cure
      Would you consider buying 4 sensors as back up to the air ride sensors, IMO it's a shame that they are unfix able out of a shop and in late 60's early seventies I was a field service man for Cummins and rebuilt many bigger engines, geezus i can have the turbo off of a KW Truck in 30 mins and rebuild in two hours
