What did you all think about #Gears5 's Story/Campaign? Personally the story was too uneven and inconsistent. Plus, the developers need to officially decide who's leading the narrative here. Because Kait was only front and center due to that necklace at the end of "4", which was completely pointless and did nothing at all in Gears 5. Regardless if the developers are all in on Kait Diaz, they need to give us better reasons to root for her besides shoehorning her in as this big Gears of War Champion.
I literally agree with every point you stated. Only thing I would have added is profanity and buzzwords but that's just me. This video is perfect, dont change your style!

@@brispybonbords4600 if you watch Omaha16's "the problem with Kait in Gears of War" he talks about the devs propping Kait up as revolutionary but we already had Anya & Sam. He even provides articles from games media talking about how Kait's a woman in gears or whatever. So yea sjw's took that and ran with it. She's kinda gears Abby

Its shit. They need to stop stretching shit out until everyone hates it, and just come up with something new. So tired of seeing my favorite trilogies get ruined with cash grab additions.
Plus they always gotta have a WOMAN OF COLOR HERO which just feels so forced.
What's funny is that even with the focus on Kate, I personally feel JD got way more fleshed out in 5. Considering everyone refers to the "Settlement 2 incident" in the previous game as some atrocity committed by the COG, it's unsurprising that JD would struggle to open up to his friends about it; you see them recoil and look at him with disgust in that final scene before the Swarm attack, aside from Marcus who just looks at him with sympathy. As Del points out later, I'm pretty sure Marcus realised JD's involvement and gave his son the benefit of the doubt.
And with those scars still fresh, coupled with the condemnation from Kait and Del, JD risks, or possibly intends to sacrifice his own life in an effort to use the hammer to stop the Swarm. Both here and in the previous Settlement 2 incident, I'd argue JD's actions likely saved a lot more lives than the alternative. However, he clearly feels the weight of those decisions and shoulders that burden alone, ashamed to face the others after waking up. Him becoming "so COG" as Kait puts it, is likely due to him losing faith in his own Judgement, following orders and allowing others to make the harder decisions. Right up until he learns about the events in Mount Kadar from Marcus, which seems to partially snap him back to his old self.
That's why JD is my favourite of the new trio. He's flawed. He's human and more fleshed out than the others. (Although Faz certainly grew on me when he tagged along with JD in act 3)
Marcus looked at him with sympathy cause soldiers have to make decisions hard decisions civies don’t like JD made hard call and it was the right call the rioters began using fire bombs on gears
What was JD supposed to do let rioters seriously hurt and kill his fellow gears? Run off making COG look weak and would embolden the rioters

@@GnosisZX Agreed. And It's worse in Del's case since he was there. How the hell is his account of events so different from JD and Faz, who don't even see eye to eye on most things at that point? Del was a soldier and he was there. As much of an asshole as Faz was, his frustration with Del is completely understandable.
And Del continues to annoy me throughout the game; even when Kait acknowledges how badly she's messed up, Del literally argues she did nothing wrong. Because that's all his character boils down to.
It's weird too because if the protesters were throwing firebombs and putting lives in danger, JD and Fahz were well within jurisdiction to eliminate the threat. But it feels like the game tries so hard to make you hate JD.
@@unlimitedninja3635 It just highlights how bad these people write. They unintentionally make the characters they want you to like unbearable and the ones they want you to hate into more fleshed out and relatable characters.
I will say to you that I've noticed that the writing was broken, probably the edition killed most of it, it looks like they add things without a better thinking, is not that difficult to solve that plot, they wanted to change the main character? Fine, just take JD out of the field, make him get a promotion for his actions and be more like a higher ranking officer or something, still important, like his mother was in the first two games, that would eliminate the choice scene, that doesn't fit Gears, that is more like Wolfenstein and is obvious that they took from it, also obvious that was a last minute change, same with JD in the field, I thought he would be out for the rest of the game, and I guess that was the ideia originally, he was out than at the end he shows up to save the day or something with some leading role, thsr would be a WAY better development, I still think that the Queen stuff was stupid, they should've just make the Swarm a locust without a Queen, but I digress.
The fact that queen myrrah comes back in Gears 5 completely spits in the face of her death in Gears of War 3, it’s on the same level of bad writing as Cortana dying in Halo 4, only to miraculously come back in Halo 5 but as a villain........just *why* .

@@OMAHA16 the problem is they had something new. i was so excited to face off against the cog as sort of a rogue militia group. was anticipating playing as the new generations of gears, led by the son of Marcus Fenix, vs the evil dictatorship that the cog were turning into after winning the locust war. but instead of going that direction, they resurrect the locust and then shoehorn in kait as the granddaughter of queen myrrah randomly just to make a "strong, female character" the protagonist.

I honestly blame Rod Ferguson. He's ruins Gears 4 for alot of people, and he tries Ruining Gears 5 but now there's a new developer and if I'm not wrong Cliff Blezinski from the first OG 3 games(Including Judgement) is coming back to fix and create A LOT more for GEARS 6

This was a great take on Gears 5. If anyone has not read the books, I highly recommend them. They present the dark, desperate, somber struggle that brought Gears of War to life. The stakes felt higher in the original trilogy. And the stories of the original characters are so well developed in the books. My dad knew nothing of the Gears story line, but he got hooked on the books and read all of them. That is the strength and depth this story HAD. I hope it can still have that in Gears 6. Not to be mean, but I dont understand why the series ever shifted focus off of Marcus. He has the most depth and pulls the most heart strings for fans. His son and Kait,etc. Could have still been included, but with Marcus driving the story. Just my opinion.

The writers must have felt so proud of being able to knock JD into a supporting role for Kait with "morality" in a Gears of War game where the theme is always to genocide a species into extinction for every game and where civilians/soldiers are fighting to survive through an apocalyptic world.
JD did nothing wrong. Protesters threw firebombs at soldiers and then got mad when they used lethal force against them then played the victim... 🤨
I felt like JD being the soldier in charge of the incident at Settlement 2, was straight character assassination in order to remove JD from main character status.
Also, I really hated how Kait's headaches and essentially the ownership for the entire Swarm is not the same as hating someone else for their secret. JD can still guilty about what happened but he should know that is the kind of situation is likely to happen for the life of a soldier.
I grew to hate Kait as a character.
What I heard was jd said the n word and ate meat in front of the vegan protesters, while burning a pride flag, while wearing a Trump hat, while listening to a joe Rogan podcast leaning against his Tesla and that’s what started the settlement 2 incident.

I’ve read on the wikia page that It wasn’t even JD’s initial decision to fire on the civilians. It was a direct order from Jinn that he knew he couldnt disobey. Because unlike Kait, JD knows that disobeying a direct order results in prison time. I can’t really confirm it cause I don’t know where the information comes from but that makes this whole terribly written plot device 10 times worse.
The first three games are the best ones

I guess Kate and del weren't real friends to JD I mean they turn their back on him as soon as they find out he kept a secret from them and did something they didnt agree with.
And it was a really stupid thing to get pissed at him for. Like it was horrible what happened but its not like they were minding there own business waving there signs.

JD made the right call in settlement 2 the protesters started throwing fire bombs and gears would have seriously been injured or killed and had gears ran off or not attacked that would have emboldened the rioters and the COG would look weak

I actually completely agree. I think that they should've stuck with the story of JD rather than Kait. Kait, in my opinion, acts like a teenager who knows nothing of the real world. She tries to find answers and all of that with Del in tow. But the plot is very unappealing to me because of the lackluster character development. Del, while being a bit more mature, is very one-dimensional in my eyes. After figuring out JD's secret he immediately turns hostile against him, and becomes Kait's little pet mainly. Which is not how a character should be, and quite honestly the story of Gears 5 was very dull in my eyes as well. I only really enjoyed the first and fourth act, not Acts 2 and 3. Even though there might've been action, this grows pale in comparison the original trilogy. The original Gears developers had a certain method for getting the story straight, and diverging from that method simply will make the story fragmented, unneeded, dull, and will feel like the identity of Gears itself has changed. Nobody gives a fuck about all this drama that goes between the characters, Humanity was on the brink of extinction, and now that the Swarm is back as the new Locust, there is no time for Kait to be finding answers in some god forsaken wasteland, and for Del to be Kait's lapdog and being hostile to JD. Del and JD have known eachother longer so it's complete nonsense that Del makes JD an enemy just because of some bullshit secret, who cares? The Gears Trilogy was NOT ABOUT KIDS WITH DRAMA ISSUES! THIS IS ABOUT A WAR WITH THE SWARM AND THE SURVIVAL OF HUMANITY! AS IT SHOULD BE! Anyway, the drama just gets extremely annoying and unneeded, if Kait had her priorities straight and if Del wasn't so pussy-strapped to Kait then Gears 5 would have never even happened.

Honestly, the drama in the original trilogy works well than any of these because they were in desperate times. Is not because the original trilogy was nostalgic and epic as this one isn't being but the fact that they showed to us in the past desperate soldiers fighting against extinction and now they are showing an teenage high school drama is the sad thing, and is funny cuz we won't putting the gameplay fact we are putting the story one and the original trilogy is the father who is keeping telling his teenager son that he have everything easly because his dad fighted for it but the kid don't get his value...

Finished all the gears, enjoyed each one of them, the 4th is at the bottom of the list to be honest, but the 5th ? Couldn't even swallow the first chapter...I tried to come back to it, but after 20 minutes deleted it again. For me this franchise is dead, RIP.
Personnaly, I've only saved JD because it's the Marcus son's and don't want to see Marcus lost an another member of his family.

Same, I kinda wanted JD to mirror marcus in a way, got scarred, failed to do the right thing (JD couldn't save lizzie while Marcus failed to save his father before gears 1), becoming more harden by war and loss, and losing their best friend (Del to JD and Dom to marcus).
In the old COG days, Kate would have been imprisoned for disobeying direct order. Even Marcus was thrown into the slab and endured hardships in the prison.
Kate has had no military/political experience to take charge. The story writing is horrendous and a slap in the face for the respect the original trilogy built through hard work.
I’d still choose Judgement over 4 and 5.
I was hoping for more depth in this video to reveal more of the story, as I moved from Xbox to PS4 a few years ago but loved the gears games. Great points though and it angers me that we can only hope that Gears 6 makes the trilogy complete and full circle and that 4 and 5 were for a reason, whereas it hasn’t felt that way. Gears 1 was standalone and didn’t need sequels, but I’m glad they did because 2 and 3 were good games that continued the story. After 3, the story started to fizzle out for me. You shouldn’t have to keep buying another game to get closure in the story. Gears 4 just ended with a sour taste. Gears 1 and 2 were tough and it felt like a real accomplishment to finish these games because the story was right and the reasons for ‘fighting’ were justified, like with Dom’s wife or when Dom died. It’s just getting boring now though and I’m sure people are becoming disloyal to Gears, exactly in the same way that a new iPhone comes out and there’s really not a lot that’s different and we know another one will be coming out. There’s no real point in committing.
I wouldn't say Del is a "douche" but he was there for Kait out of the goodness of his heart and because he's the brains of the trio. I do agree with your Settlement 2 Massacre loophole. Del was present but somehow doesn't know that JD gave the greenlight to fire on the protest? Very weird. I do agree with everything else though, this campaign was a mess
the thing about the riot is that i dont hate jd in the slightest. like marcus said with that clip he did what he had to do and felt really bad about. he wasnt proud of that(a evil person would be Proud of that). but for some reason we are supposed to see him as a bad guy which is stupid.

Grear video essay I agree with a lot of things but I kinda disagree with JD in some respects I think be evolved well in this game and I ended up liking him 10 fold more then 4, he actually has a SOLID arc or heroes journey unlike the other two and was redeemed so to speak when he joined the desert and in the end. Some aspects of the story just wrapped up WAY to quickly like kait severing her connection, niles, and the matriarch I was hoping to have more dead space 2 psychosis moments with kait as it was hyped up but only shown briefly. I see it like this.
Compared to gears 4 the story is an 8.5 for me
The story as a whole without influence I see it as a 7 to high 6.
Kait as a protaganist is okay, I dont absolutely hate her in this one so she redeemed herself in a lot of respects to me but she was just fine. Which is bad you dont want fine to label your protaganist.

Del I 1000% agree with literally took me .2 milliseconds to decide his fate. I think he is the weakest by far of the new cast even though I really love the actors other work.
Also as someone who is prior military who had had to make tough calls I understand what toll it takes to make a bad call or make the wrong choice in a panicking situation especially when inexperienced (literally the only thing different from a private to a 2nd lieutenant is a college degree and a hugh pay raise)

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I too agree that J.D.'s Character improved a lot in Gears 5 and I consider myself now a fan of him after playing the story in Gears 5. He definitely has that "hero" quality similar to Marcus. I concur on Del and Kait. And yes I am a addict personally for conversation and debating, especially about Gears of War, it's a magnificent, very interesting Science Fiction Universe.

I know we will finish this story line in the next game. I would like to see a game about the pendulum wars and see a game from e day to Marcus being arrested. I have been a huge fan of the series for a very long time and recently read the books and they filled in so much information.
I couldn't agree more, hivebusters story was also bad, had fun In coop overall but they could take much cooler story directions.
Them releasing a prequel story maybe even with flashbacks to the pendulum wars, something like that would literally free me from my mortal shackles

I saw things slightly different or perhaps you didn't touch on certain details. JD had kept quiet about his involvement with settlement 2 which had led to del leaving the cog in G4. It's in the mine scene....when jd says "when you wanted to leave the cog I trusted you and went"

Very happy with your comparisons of the previous game's lore and in depth depiction of the current set of characters (& how they are pretty poorly written and 1 tracked in order to push the story through the door). I couldn't agree more with your "passive story" statement. A shit ton of the decisions felt unimportant and weightless. Why wouldn't the cog not force themselves into this HUGE discovery? Why tf is everyone ok with Kait visibly & selfishly calling the shots?
They could've written WAY better ways to create tension. Maybe the book will fill in some gaps that I need filled, but god damn they sure made it feel like highschool drama w/Kait as the popular girl everyone is trying to comfort :/

I’m finally burning thru this game. Which is sad cause I loved the original series. Read the books even had a Baird figure in my office. The settlement 2 just seemed lazy to me because Marcus disobeyed orders, lost his career and had redemption. For this one they just jd followed orders lost his career and needed redemption. They tried to create a parallel theme with out understanding the actual story. It’s a find and replace game.

After having done both, I think what is canon is Del dying so we can probably resume the role of JD again. Personally I want Del to live but I'll explain that in a second. The ONLY thing I want from JD living is for him to reenact gears 3, stabbing the queen, saying "You feel that? That's from Del, and everyone else you killed you bitch."
Now, personally I want Del to live because JD's death left such a heart breaking impact especially on Marcus. I think this makes for more emotional storytelling since what we feel for this squad in no way compares what we felt for the OG Delta squad, and this would take it to a whole other level.
Why don’t allow to see both decisions like mass effect and the especially the suffering did
@@AdityaSingh-lp5rp I don't think that's bowing down to the leftist mob. It makes sense why Kait would now be the main character. The leader of the locust is queen Myrrah. We've known this since Gears 2. It makes sense that her daughter would replace her and her granddaughter would now be the most important puzzle piece of the story. That story arch has existed since 2008.
@@lawman34 do not cite the lore to me I have been playing gears of war since gears 2 came out Ive replayed that game a concerning number of times I can recite word for word the opening and Hoffman speeches

Marcus stole the screen everytime he appeared and the moment his became even mildly interesting he was villified and sidelined

Despiye gears of war having been in my top 5 favorite series of all time... im really glad i never got 5. 4 was fun and not a bad story and even loved the console special edition. But there was something about it that just made me uninterested. There are maps in 4 iv never played and i think im like lvl 4 in horde.
5 iv played even less.
But had no problems having to start over on gears 1 2 and 3. Other than no longer haveing my beta unlocks especially the golden retro. Even got almost evrything maxed out in horde. But have a really hard time with those 2.
I think its because the "swarm" being as dumb as the name. That and basically destroying the previous games. All the sacrifices and the perfect end to a perfect series being pointlessly continued. I also hate that the swarm can turn humans into them. Its weird and dumb.

JD wasn't amazing, but I liked him for what he was, I felt accidentally killing Carmine made him even more interesting and would have loved to see how he settled.
Wait til the next next generation comes out with their remake of GOW 1-3. Storylines of a generation define. Cant be duplicated. Only created.
We want great stories to continue. Rarely do they pan out because of multiple criteria thats fan-driven. Then to add to that, we say we miss the great games, but the dedicated actually replay. We're like kids who want another bedtime story and dont want to sleep before the next wake up call to reality.

I disagree. Gears 4 wasnt about JD at all. It may have seemed that way. But Gears 4 story led up to it being about Kait's mother and her lineage to the antagonist therefore leading up to gears 5 and Kait's connection to the antagonist

Only thing I'd disagree with is if they put Kait at the forefront from moment one, people would have seen the locust queen shit a year off. We all started to figure it out at points throughout the game, but if Kait was lead, it would have been obvious.

I remember an advertisement for Gears of War 3 or more so a slogan in a series of ads that said "Brothers to the end"... yeh so much for that shit here. Dom and Marcus BOTH did fucked up things, by Gears 1 they were both hardened veterans of the Pendulum Wars and had been fighting the locust since E day for 13 years, although technically Marcus was in prison for a long while. The point is along the s=way they both did fucked up shit, some of it out of anger or in the throws of a mania for blood, other times because they were soft hearted and couldn't do what was necessary. Neither of them turned their backs on each other, they were always there for one another in all things, good times, bad times, laughing and grieving, it was never a question of having to accept the faults of the other because they just did it, paragons of loyalty and brotherhood... Gears 5 had a story more suited for DND. It continued to shit on the franchise and what was made, for Gods sake they should have just made a different cast and set their story in the Gears franchise in the time of Marcus's imprisonment or something in a more interesting, already known time instead of this shit sandwich
Im from the Playstation side and I found myself curious what happened with the Gears of War franchise since I last played it with the very first game. I used to play with my family and I loved it, the game was so fun, but it looks like same things that are happening PS are happening to XBox as well. Women are perfect flawless people and are the most badass creatures on this earth...
it really is just summed up in that narrative shift, they wanted a female lead or were forced to for sake of inclusion and it shows in her 180 in her attitude and role and pushing aside any other person to the point they even try to kill them off like a sane person would choose to kill JD and ruin Marcus's entire story from the first trilogy just for her
the RBF of her combine with hair change and attitude to every single person while she disobeys with no consequence tells you what u need to know on once again diversity push, take something old as a trojan horse to agendas and use as a shield to criticism
Gears tragic death at coalitions hands, like Halo, they need to let these brands die than try to keep afloat like silent hill and how that didn't work out for them after team silent

Most people decided to save JD because of Marcus. The poor guy had lost just about everything at that point and it would’ve been too cruel to allow his lame son to die too. Neither Del or JD were good enough characters to really root for so the gamer community had to look at the characters around them and decide whose death would affect the universe at large greater then the other and make a choice base on that incentive.

The story in its whole is flawed. From writting to execution. Characters are just horrible compared to the first 3. I mean name me scenes in 4-5 that rival thai killing himself, dom finding his wife. Dom dying. Everything you say we "could get from kates story in gears 6" we already know from the books or extended lore in game.

Gow is the greatest game ever. Good story line. I stopped playing gow4 after a few missions. The atory should stay about the locust. Its could be a endless good story.

I think the only reason they made Kait the protagonist because she would be the one of the first female leads in video games.
So what would you rather have then ? Continuation of the Marcus and JD stories ? They've had 3 main entries where they were front and center what is there left to say? The ending of GOW 4 was actually the setup to GOW 5. They hid the most important character of the new trilogy, one which reveals deep lore implication in plain view to only reveal it at the end thus setting up GOW 5 with Kait as the main protagonist.

The plot that humanity made the locusts made no sense to me most of all in these games, the lab in 1 just came across as a whack job experimenting on locusts to make something like a weapon, now it's used as see it was hinted at from the beginning, despite the hollows clearly being more than a hundred years old with all that architecture and tech
For one, Del volunteered to follow Kate and ended up dying without getting some Nam Nam 3000, for 2, players feel comfortable with killing Del at the end because he had no significance to the story and since they had a Hispanic female riders felt that it was too many minorities in the pot, for 3 jackpot was psyching himself out to save a bunch of people including Kate who called him a bucket of bolts

If it’s player controlled for the death of either James or Del Ray; how are they going to move that forward into Gears 6? What if I killed Del Ray ? Will they just take a cop out way and not put either in the game because they aren’t aware of which character you killed off?
Like Black Ops 2 did this with Mason if you Kill him or not but the MASSIVE DIFFERENCE is that Black Ops 2 was a self contained narrative so whatever choices you made were shown at the end and even Black Ops 3 was just a trashy continuation of the series

In the Witcher 2 and 3, you would load in your game save from the previous game, thus keeping your decisions intact.
They could do a bootup choice "who did you kill in gears 5" kinda thing but idk story sucks so
Witcher 2 and 3 and Mass Effect 2 and 3 all had systems that allowed save data from the previous game to be accessed by the new one, meaning major story choices would be carried over.
Gears of war was the best game to ever be made in my opinion especially gears of war 2 I mean come on you get to ride a brumak and I loved the concept of seeing how brutal war was and seeing how our beloved characters grow was a different type of feeling but we all got robbed by the coalition in gears 4&5, they took away the respect I had for this title and it just isn’t the same, I wish Epic games could make gears 6 just for old times sake because screw the coalition for killing this amazing game/story, it’s honestly heartbreaking.
