I'm old enough to be your grandma and was raised on a subsistence style farm and while I already know much of what you are doing, I still enjoy watching your family. I'm sure you have heard the story about the husband who asks his new wife why she cut the end of the ham before baking. She told him that was how her mother always did it and her mother was a good cook and since she wanted to be a good cook also she followed her mother's example. She went to her mother and asked why she always cut the end off the ham before cooking. The mother said she always wanted to be as good a cook as her mother and since her mother always cut the end of the ham she did too. They then went to see her grandma to ask her what the purpose of cutting the end of the ham was. Grandma replied, "I cut it off so it would fit in the pan." Sometimes that can be how it is to come from multi-generational farmers. You just start doing the same thing your parents did without asking why even though as we are finding out, there may be better ways to do something. The nice thing about your videos is you two are natural teachers. You explain the whats and whys and you don't just continue doing the same thing mindlessly, like when you decided to rip out most of your rhubarb because it was so much more than your family could use. I cringed thinking you could just sell the extra or give it away each year since you had it established. But the two of you are very intentional and had a plan for that growing space plus if you start growing excessive amounts of things, even perennials, it starts chipping away at your available time for the crops you do want. You are a very wise couple and it is a pleasure watching how you manage everything it takes to make a successful homestead without getting so busy that you forget the most important part; family.
I'm so glad to see your generation accepts help for things like mental health. I'm 65. My generation did not. I can't understand why not. Your garden is just wonderful! Great job family!!!
Not sure if this would help. But one of my main mantras is worrying only makes you suffer twice. I say this as it may help you with the overwhelm. Worrying and stressing about all of the constant harvesting. You need to accept that’s your reality and try not to worry. It’s definitely a skill that you develop overtime.
We make our own raspberry lemonade as well. Last year my wife discovered that adding mint leaves at the time of serving makes it even better, especially in summer when it's hot.
“I can’t get out” omg your daughter sounds soooo precious!! Her little voice just melts my heart!! 💞💞 I love how you’re teaching and including your kiddos in the homestead tasks! My daughter just turned one, and I’m so excited to include her in everything! In the meantime, she gets a great view of what mommy does from her carrier on my back.
Beautiful potatoes 🥔 Jason/Sow THE Land built his own cold room. He built one for Justin Rhodes as well. Justin said it was the best decision he's ever made. God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻
I dug my potatoes already, a little early but my vines were dying very quickly. I ended up with 100 plus pounds a lot of big ones too. Super excited, up 20 pounds from last year. Congrats on your huge harvest!
Cody, I'm sure you've done it already but if not, please secure the new racks to the wall. These racks are known to topple over when they have weight on them and I'd hate to see one of the kids get caught underneath all those potatoes.
The beetles which lay the eggs that become those grubs seek out leaf litter piles, rotting down wood chip piles, and even compost piles when it's time to lay their eggs. The grubs chew on the decomposing carbonaceous materials. All that leaf litter in a thick layer around the potatoes was very attractive to them. Food for thought.
You are so right about the kids being happy when engaged in a positive way. They appreciate you and your husband more and changing your thoughts about the chores is 👍
Some days i go to my Bible and read all of the passages that tell us not to worry. I find it give me a good idea that God knows what we are going through and HE has our back. I also find that I don't work well tired where my husband can't sleep well if he thinks something needs to be done right now. Know what works for you. In my case a short nap gets me reset to go again. God bless y'all and keep growing.
Our family (children & adults) 😁 alike enjoy watching your self- sustaining videos. Thank you for all the encouragement & inspiration. To God be the glory in all you & family do!
I find if I feel overwhelmed with a huge harvest, I remind myself this is a blessing from God! Thank you for this amazing harvest Lord, then I share it with my family and friends, passing on the blessing is very rewarding.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I planted an 80' row of heritage raspberry plants this spring. It took 8 years if failure before I finally found the spot in my yard that would grow raspberries successfully... we live in a swamp.... I might have gone overboard but they are my husband's favorite!
Cody, have you ever thought about using a potato plow? My dad had one that you use with the tractor and it busts the potatoes right out of the ground. 😊
It is such fun to watch you working with your children and the laughter that happens. Good work = good times. Those will be beautiful memories for your children in years to come. Bless y'all.
Oh my God you guys made me green with envy! Those potatoes are to die for.Im here in south africa and our growing season has just started so now I need to go back and check how you planted them and what you added as hilling,I'm super Impressed
8:49 something I learned in my psych class is that stress is only harmful if you believe it is. Weirdly enough, the only people with high-stress lives who tend to get heart attacks earlier on are those that believe stress is bad. People who think stress can be helpful live longer, statistically. Anyway thanks for another video! I’m 19 and doing college in a big city, but am working to gather knowledge for my future homestead. I love watching your videos while I work; it keeps me motivated.
I felt that first dig with the large potatoes coming up in my soul. Also, I highly recommend raspberry sorbet to use up the berries. Easy to keep it low sugar and can be dairy free.
Nice harvest! We got caught in the rain harvesting our potatoes this weekend. I was wondering if I should wash the mud off, and it sounds like that that is probably the way to go based on this video. Great tips, thank you!!
Bravo! I am so impressed with your work ethic and big potatoes. I like Cody's new haircut. It must be a great feeling knowing that 90% of your food is healthy, tasty, available and will keep you out of the grocery store where so many of us spend 2-3 hours a week driving to and fro and shopping.
So excited for your bountiful harvest. We had an awful year this year of growing anything this year. We did at least get to enjoy some new potatoes and make some awesome potato dishes, but not enough for long term storage. Oh well, there’s always next year. 😂 Also, another question I had…are the boards on your raised beds 1” thick? I know they were rough sawn but wasn’t sure if they were 1” or thicker. Thanks so much!
I just thought I would suggest looking at restaurant supply places for wire shelving, it's really reasonable and food safe, just a thought for the root cellar. Love all the videos.
Where I live, if you let the ground dry out, you can't even put a shovel in it. Found that out the hard way this year trying to dig potatoes and carrots. Last year I just left the dirt on them and before I cooked I would brush them off and wash them
Greetings from Syd -Aust. Wow, that's a monster harvest. I've never had much success with potatoes but that's inspirational for our upcoming summer. Well done guys. Cheers 👍👍😃😃
Have you thought about dry canning some of the smaller potatoes. I have done this for two years. We love it! Such a quick meal on those busy days. Found my recipe on Rebel Canners.
You guys make hard and important work look easy! You all are so informative, inspirational, and motivating 😊 Oh the simple joy of harvesting potatoes 🥔 It’s like every one you dig out was making you happy. And you should be 🙌🏼 I loved Seven Brides!! When I first watched that (about 6years ago) I was laughing so much 😂 Great movie! That song “Honey Come Take My Hand” is perfect ❤
Consider a soda maker. You can make your own soda water. Just get the Co2 cans and replace them periodically at Target or wherever (we replace ours less than once a year and my hubby drinks a lot of seltzer water).
this harvest is amazing. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart. It's always so educational to watch your videos and try it out yourself. Raspberry lemonade sounds delicious. I also have so many raspberries in the freezer, I'm going to try that. Thank you for your time, I love your videos so much.
Curious on when you planted the spuds. It looked like you mounted, but also saw what looked like mulch. Can you share your planting method? The yield was incredible.
Abundance‼I love potatoes ❗ (born & raised in Ohio) so wonderful to see your children in the garden,,,,,truly THE BEST Life Lessons for Your Family💚💛💖💙💚
I have the same racks. Just a note of caution. Some veggies placed directly on those racks get indented by the racks after some time. I switched to laying cardboard over the metal to avoid this. Not sure of potatoes though. They may be hard enough to not get marked up.
I ended up with about 100 lbs of potatoes this year. I used last years potatoes for my seed potatoes and the eyes were like a foot long. I will never do that again. I ended up with smaller potatoes than last year. Last year I had almost 200 lbs. We can never have enough potatoes. I have learned how to make the BEST crispy potato chips that stay crispy for days!!!! Then fried potatoes, baked, french fries. I can't think of any other food that we eat at almost every meal.
I have never grown potatoes partly because I’m a bad diabetic and potatoes are carbs. I wanted to try little red potatoes so I googled and it said sprouted red store spuds would grow so I planted three potatoes in 5 gallon buckets. My mother in law threw a fit because I wasted my money the spuds wouldn’t grow so I bumped them. Low and behold I harvested 3 dozen new red potatoes next I’m planting them in one of my raised beds love your channel
Wow, great great harvest. One day at a time. Planting and processing most of your food does take a lot of time! Give yourselves some credit your doing a lot for your family! Do you have the freeze fresh book it's a real cool book. The raspberry lemonade drink looks very refreshing!Nancy from Nebraska
Can't wait to dig up my patch when we get back from vacation. Last year was the first year i stored potatoes from August until April thanks to watching your harvest videos. Can i ask where you got your harvesting apron from?. That would be an amazing Christmas gift for my mother in law who is out picking blueberries and raspberries each year. She could stick her small colanders in them. ( I want one for me too)😊 Another great video.
That's so cool! Congrats! The Joey Apron would work great for that.. Sorry, I forgot to put the link in the description: roogardening.com/?ref=ggopwrij Use code morethanfarmers for 10% off!
If you're able, set up an electric fence, once you've got the potatoes in and let your chickens in the beds to pick out the grubs and fertilize the area. A guy I used to work with did that and it worked great. Just a thought. I'm impressed with the load of potatoes you harvested.
Where I live, you can even rent ducks to go through your garden and have them eat them. Those bigger ones have been in the ground for a few years though. The ones around here (different continent) stay in the ground for around four years before they turn into their final form and leave the ground. When they are smaller, they don't do as much damage, but big ones? Yeah, don't like those.
Wowza, your potatoes are robust and gorgeous ! I have that grub in my garden.... I always thought it was from a kind of ground bee.... thanks for discovering it is from a destructive beetle because now I won't just let them be... but I won't kill them either...just re-locate. Nice real video of family and fun in the garden.
Put them under a big tree. They like that and are not very likely to actually do too much harm to a fully grown tree. Birds and chicks love them though, so you could feed those larvae to them too. High in protein. Larvae of the May beetle (what we have around here, most of the time), are even edible. You can fry them in a pan and try them out (never done that but they are supposed to taste a bit nutty and have a mealy texture).
Thanks for the raspberry concentrate recipe. Our raspberries producing a bunch. I have cooked a bunch of mine just today and have about a quart and a half of pulp.Any idea how much pulp you have after removing seeds for raspberry amount given.
You can get the shelving from a restaurant supply store. Everything has to be on stainless steel metal shelving a certain height off of the floor for food safety.
My entire potato harvest this year were eaten by those white grubworms! Never had that problem before and I'm not sure how to prevent it next year. If you have any ideas, please share! :) That raspberry lemonade looks delicious and refreshing!
So, around here (Central Europe, might be a different bug laying them (often May beetles), but the larvae look the same), those things stay in the ground for several years before they turn into their final form. When they are smaller, they don't cause as much harm, but the bigger ones can cause quite a bit of damage. What we do, is till the soil every year and pick them (as many as we can) out of the ground before they can grow so big, it also causes them to come to the surface on their own and birds love them too, so you might get some help from them. If you have chickens, you can collect them and feed them to the chicks. Some people let you rent their ducks around here to eat slugs and larvae, but they might not get all the larvae when they are buried deep in the ground.
Teasing you; Your song “hey darling,” is a song the UA-cam channel called Countryside Acres uses as an exit song every video. (Former Ontario Folks) building their home/farm in Russia 🇷🇺 Very recognizable ❤ love the song. Use it too because it so true! Congratulations on the potatoes 🥔 and thank you for the raspberry lemonade! Sweet smart idea! Will be using that next summer! ❤❤❤❤ 🇨🇦 Chow, Cremona.

I’m going to try your raspberry concentrate and I’m going to try it with peach and strawberry concentrates
That would be so good!😋
You all are an inspiration!! I have learned so much from you all !! Thank you!
You’re welcome! Glad we could help!😊
What a wonderful harvest! I totally appreciate the effort that goes into that 😅. Really great video.
Thanks so much!
Those fruits are a true reflection of your hard work
What a beautiful harvest!
Those shelves have caster wheels that you can buy separately. Very convenient for when you have to move the shelves loaded or unloaded.
I love you guyss so much ❤
My God! So many potatoes! I love it!
What a fabulous potato harvest! We have consistently poor luck with regular potatoes here!
Sorry to hear that!😕
The metal cubes are antique milk crates.
Thanks for the raspberry concentrate recipe. Our raspberries producing a bunch. I have cooked a bunch of mine just today and have about a quart and a half of pulp.Any idea how much pulp you have after removing seeds for raspberry amount given.
“I can’t get out.” So precious ❤
Love the reference to Seven brides for seven brothers ! Cute 🥰
Have you tried the raspberry lemonade concentrate in iced tea? That sounds like it’d be delicious
You can get the shelving from a restaurant supply store. Everything has to be on stainless steel metal shelving a certain height off of the floor for food safety.
That's was a nice big harvest. Great job to the whole family. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.
Thank you!😊
I love watching you folks and I love animals. I never see you talk to or pet the puppy. It needs love and attention😍
You know, you only see a very few minutes of their lives? And during that time, they’re teaching and sharing with us.
It gets plenty of love...its just not the focus of our videos
