I'm guessing this M135i wasn't equipped with the ZF gearbox? That margin would be pushed even further if it had been. The 3.0L and ZF combination is one of the best in the hot hatch segment.
pokest225 Surely the M135i should have gone faster than it's 4.9 second claim then? I think it looks like a broken up surface and not even sure airfield tarmac even is grippier
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt the Civic Type R have a limited Slip whereas the 135 is an open diff? That might help explain how well it performs as compared with the Bimmer on this surface.
Seriously, I never understood why people throw shade at one car or another in a comparo when they are both great cars in their own right. Diversity is the reason why the car world has so much to offer that you needn't ever get bored. FWD, AWD, RWD, turbo, NA, large displacement, small displacement. It's all just different ways to experience something we all love, and I personally want to sample as much of that diversity as I possibly can.
Exactly. People arguing with their mouth foaming over a 0.1s difference. I remember when I was younger I nearly shit myself driving a FWD hot hatch that can do 0-60 in less than 8s
Interesting, although its worth mentioning another magazine, autorcar i believe managed a 4.2s 0-60mph in a manual M135i. Looking at this video looks like alot of wheelspin considering RWD is supposed to have better traction off the line. In comparison the Type R got a "perfect" launch i would say and a 5.4s 0-60mph time is mightily impressive for a FWD car!
OK, I admit, I'm a Honda fanboy. I will even say even if you gave the Civic stickier tires and so forth, the M135i will still win. Not by much, but the BMW will win. However, what I will say about the Honda is that it's a more high strung engine than the BMW but the Honda engine is still probably a lot better built and won't have the maintenance issues that the BMW will have. Hell, the BMW looks much better and so forth. Yes, that Honda is hideous and almost borderline ricer-looking. But at the end of the day, I will give up 0.1 seconds for rock solid reliability any day. Till this day, I've had friends with Z4's, 335's, & 135's (N54 & N55) that have maintained their cars through the dealership and they're horridly expensive to service and constant parts breaking on them. My little Acura RSX-S gets plummeted day in and day out past its 8100 rpm redline. All I do is change the oil and I'm at 200,000 miles on the odometer. Not one single problem (electrical, suspension, brakes, pumps)... yet.
It's too soon to talk about Honda vtec turbo reliability. It's almost all new tech to them. And if you look at how reliable is the f1 turbo car..... well. A brave asumption. In some years, it will be the moment to talk about how reliable this engine is. Obviously, Honda has a good reputation in this regard. But time will tell with this one.
I understand where you're coming from but comparing an F1 car to an everyday car is far reaching. I know Honda's recent racing engines have had trouble. This isn't the 1st time but within a couple of seasons they will set the standards as a power house. Every auto-manufacturer goes through a learning curve. However, even within racing, like Indy, the V8 Honda designed was astonishing. Compared to its competitors, the engine was a nightmare. It was a 3.5 Liter 650 horsepower monster that was one of the most reliable engines in the racing circles. Racing companies flocked to have that engine and Honda wouldn't let anyone keep them to keep tight control of their technology. One thing that I'm almost always blown away by Honda is their engineering prowess when it comes to engine design. They tend to over engineer their engines for reliability. Honda, above all else, is a premier engine maker. They make engines not only for automobiles but airplanes (from what I read their astonishing turbines), lawnmowers (best lawnmower I ever owned), motorcycles, generators, and a lot more. They employ a large assortment of scientist like theoreticians, physicist, and chemist to constantly develop new technologies that are patented to other auto manufacturer. In a way, Honda is more of a technological innovator than an automobile company. I'm not sure whether the turbo unit is made by Honda or outsourced to some turbo manufacturer like Mitsubishi, Honeywell, or KKK. It wouldn't surprise me either way. They know how to design engine components with incredible tolerances and if turbo housing is outsourced, I'm sure the specifications demanded on the product are set at very high standards. The K20 and F-series have already proven that Honda can do something that no other manufacturers can do. Design high compression engines, high redline, DOHC multivalved engines, with the most reliable designs while still maintaining high horsepower/liter. However, in the end, you're right, time will tell. But based on history, if they continue to build turbo v-tech systems they will become the gold standard of the industry.
Could you please include trap speed as well for 1/4 mile measurements? Kind of pointless without trap speed if you ask me.. I love this video format (just like all of your videos). Keep up the good work! :)
The M135i gets to 60 in 4.6 seconds with the MANUAL according to Car & Driver, which I find to be extremely reliable. They record a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds for the Civic Type R. This race is fucking retarded. If you watch closely, the bimmer had a TERRIBLE launch. This was a very poor drag race, but I guess it shows that a Honda can be almost as quick as a BMW if there is a large disparity in skill level
I have an M135i now, I had a Civic twenty odd years ago, not the type R, but it still had the V-Tech engine, I absolutely loved that car (until I wrote it off). One of the best engines made that V-Tech.
Hard to compare the numbers. Please show the stats and times next to each other throughout the video. It makes it easier to keep track of the statistics as we watch the video progress.
The beamer also had another 40 lb-ft or so... I mean sure the spec sheets were similar but surely a 3.0L turbo 6 has an overall power curve advantage over a 2.0L turbo 4?
Not yet, its coming I believe early in 2017 Usually we dont get the Type R though, I believe the last one was the integra around 2000, I could be mistaken though
r1sh12 first of all i don't know what your talking about. the high point of the Civic Type-R before this current model was the FD2, which is certainly a better and overall faster car than the EP3. the current FK2 has a much higher capability than the FD2 and certainly more than that shitty FN2.
I wonder what would happen if Honda puts it's engineering into a proper front engine rear wheel drive car. The S2000 and NSX are iconic and won't be forgotten but i imagine a Civic sized RWD Honda or even a four door limo. This would be awesome.
In my m235i the sweet spot is between 3 and 4 thousand rpm launches like it’s come out of a slingshot with virtually no wheelspin. Can’t beat the straight 6 for character at these price points either.
Does this M135i have the M Performance limited slip differential installed? It appears that it lays down a pair of strips of rubber, but those could possibly be from other cars. Just wondering since I have a somewhat modified 6 speed M235i coupe (essentially the same chassis but in coupe form) with one of the modifications which in my opinion was by far the best modification, is that M Performance LSD. It used to be so ridiculously easy to light up that 245/35/18 Pilot Super Sport in the back. With the LSD the car felt so improved in handling into and during the curves while allowing you to get on the throttle much more and much earlier than before. Also cut out most of the wheel spin on the 1-2 upshift when you are really getting on it like they are in this video.
M135i manual can do 5 second to 60 mph with the right launch and good tyres. 5.2 to 60 is a fairly average launch and shifts. The auto is indeed a tad faster, but the manual gearbox is just better and more fun to drive. In either case unleashing the true performance of the M135i is a sports catalyst and a remap away, it's a 400bhp machine in this guise and preposterously quick. The Honda is a tremendous car but ultimately it only drives the front wheels and that is a distinct limitation.
@@carlincledon4794 Most cars from the past 30 years have catalytic converters in their exhausts which are designed to control exhaust gas emissions as per environmental laws. These converters alter the chemical composition of the exhaust to be less toxic, as a side effect of this they restrict the speed and flow of the exhaust gases leaving the engine. It all has to pass through the catalyst. This in general reduces the power of the engine. You can remove these cats and fit a cheap empty pipe, increase flow and performance quite a bit. However the car is then usually illegal on public roads. The next best thing is to buy an aftermarket catalyst with less 'cells' that restrict the exhaust flow far less than the original and improve performance too, but keep the car's emissions just about legal. Since they take more design effort and also use precious metals in the catalyst like the original they cost a lot more than an empty tube. In either case better flow = more power and an M135i has pretty restrictive cats. On the standard car ripping out the cat probably gives you an extra 20 horsepower without doing anything else and makes the engine more responsive. On a tuned car the effect is even greater since you're already shoving more exhaust through.
Apart from the explanation of the physics involved on the launch of the cars, i'm pretty tired of this "numbers" drag races, "this one did this in 0,001 sec, and the other did 0-100 in 3000miliseconds with 12mm of space, blah,blah,blah..." don't take me wrong, i love your videos more than any other channel here on youtube (well, except Petrolicious), but nobody goes 0-60mph or 0-100m or whatever measurements are, in real life! I couldn't care less about numbers, there is a reason why TopTrumps is (mostly) for kids. Sorry if i appear to be rude, just venting out, these things just made "fanboys" pop-up and have a keyboard war on the comments, and it's getting old by now.
We can read the stats that the manufacturers put out if we care about numbers. I want a journalist to tell me how a car feels to drive. To try to explain the nuances that a stats sheet can't.
RWD is also more agile at speed that FWD. But it is a mixed bag depending on where you are racing, depending heavily on the road and the driver's style. A driver who tries to avoid all wheel spin or sliding, is going to be slower in a RWD car. But the more you are willing to hang the tail out, the faster a RWD will be except around tight, relatively slow, tracks.
the BMW has a 3.0L straight six twin turbo setup with way more torque and a tad more power, considering its only about 70kgs heavier, this shows actually how amazing the Honda is considering its FWD with a far smaller engine too boot, not really showing RWD been truly superior tbh.
Real world figures though, at my age the insurance for the BMW is £2k along with tyres that are very pricey. The Civic costs less to start off with and the insurance is £700. Add to the fact that you don't have the stigma of being a BMW driver and that the Civic is a lot more practical personally it was a no brainer. Far more exciting to drive on road and track, the looks aren't for everyone but then thats always personal :)
While horsepower is more important at a certain point for drag racing, they totally neglected the significant torque advantage the BMW has. Not sure about Honda, but BMW almost always under rates their power figures. This wasn't a surprise. BMW power
I think driving a front wheel drive, 5 door family hatchback around a track is completely irrelevant, don't you? Nobody buys a modern hatchback to go to the track with. It's pointless.
***** Like all these hatches, they're road cars for people who need space. Of course most people who own these will have families! It's just a hot hatch. The whole point is that it's just a regular hatch.
+Luka Lazarevic why do you guys keep saying wheelspin is so much fun? Traction gets you through the corner faster, the civic is way more maneuverable than that ugly shit bimmer
ImBarryScottCSS Yeah, paying at least 15% more in gas, taking it in to the shop more often, and paying a higher insurance premium with little cheap or easy options to upgrade or personalize your vehicle is really worth it for that rwd feel...
The bimmer is an inline 6 turbo where as the Type R is a 2.0l turbo. one liter disadvantage. Bimmer is going to break your bank and they lose more value.
Is it just me that noticed the Civic steering to the left and then having to cover more ground? How about driving both in a perfectly straight line so they cover equal distance.
The civic is a little lighter, and the BMW has a little power.. And I understand power to weight ratio.. But something seems odd comparing a 4 to a 6 banger.. Well if a 4 cyl turbo can keep up with a 6, while almost making the same power, I guess some good engineering went on with the civic department
this vid shows that the type r is faster at a rolling start race. typer is 0.2 seconds slower too 60 and only 0.1 seconds slower at the end of the drag. meaning its gaining in the bnw toward the end.
which car wins on the track AND EVERY DAY DRIVING?? eventually the civic will pass the bmw because of the top speed of 168mph unless you have the sport package if it exists you get to 150 mph on the bimmer if not you are stuck at 130mph ... my accord does 135 so i guess the bimmer will lose too
"In the world of Drag Racing, RWD trumps FWD" Hmm you know or one car was a 2 litre engine and another a 3 litre engine with both hp and tq advantage. A 50kg weight difference is hardly an equalizer here. I'd like to see a RWD 2 litre with more or less same hp/tq and weight numbers duke it out with the Civic so we can verify your above quote.
I'm gonna get the civic type r when it comes to North America.. I like the k20 and I'm sure I'm won't be having issues like the other brand plus I want to spend my time on the road not at the shop..
On the track things are different, almost 15 seconds apart!. In nurburgring: Type R Civic makes 7:50.63 and BMW 135i 8:05. Source: www.bmwblog.com/2012/12/10/video-bmw-m135i-runs-nurburgring-nordschleife-in-805-minutes/ www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/videos/a25169/2015-civic-type-r-destroys-fwd-nurburgring-world-record/
Mauricio Llorca No, you compare different Times. at Sport Auto the same Driver droves the Cars over the Nordschleife and BMW 8.05 and Honda 8.12 so Honda ist not faster.
I don't get some people still arguing the Honda could be better if blabla. It is wrong wheel drive, bone hard and uses a WTCC chassis with super sticky tires and is still slower than a heavy shrunken 3 series. I drove the M135i and it is a comfy cruiser. I have driven people carriers with harder suspension. Honda could actually prove a point when they made a reincarnation if the S2000 or finally build a proper RWD saloon or hatch. It would win a lot of petrol heads hearts immediately. The other way around i would be glad if the 1 series got a smaller lighter platform but instead they screw the next gen 1 series also with this useless fwd crap.
They should compare the two cars after 30,000 miles or so. The Honda is made with so much more care. The BMW's in my life have all been made like shit.
Supcharged Of course, a lot more people are going on tracks than on dragstrips. Plus laptimes show every aspect of the car. Acceleration, braking and cornering.
I'm guessing this M135i wasn't equipped with the ZF gearbox? That margin would be pushed even further if it had been. The 3.0L and ZF combination is one of the best in the hot hatch segment.
They recorded a 5.4 seconds to 60 in the Civic Type R that is better than Honda's own figures....Impressive!
airfield tarmac, more grip. On street tarmac it's more difficult.
+pokest225 if its bruntingthorpe then I don't remember tarmac being that great
Honda's figures will be to 62mph
wrong,honda figures km\h
Wrong.
0-62mph - 5.7 seconds
www.honda.co.uk/cars/new/civic-type-r-2015/specification.html
I'd like to see rolling start races. A much truer gauge of how fast a car is, eliminating the advantages/disadvantages between the driven wheels.
5.4 for a FWD is amazing
airfield tarmac. More grip than street tarmac .
pokest225 Surely the M135i should have gone faster than it's 4.9 second claim then? I think it looks like a broken up surface and not even sure airfield tarmac even is grippier
+S Miller probably a bad launch. It's a manual one I think, and it spun a lot the tyres.
+Tuomas K accept what?
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt the Civic Type R have a limited Slip whereas the 135 is an open diff? That might help explain how well it performs as compared with the Bimmer on this surface.
Both are great cars in her own way - I have the M135i but I´m also a HONDA fan. Cool video!
Now do a 0-30 in reverse and tell me whats better FWD or RWD
would be so much more representative of the reality hahaha
@lelegume1635 what're you filming action movies hahahaha
haha
haha.. good one
Lol... well said...

Very impressive result for the Type R, for its 1)front-wheel-drive system 2)manual gearbox and 3)less horsepower.

I would like to see a 25MPH roll on race too
Bmw win also
Awesome video. Those two little cars seem like fun! ;)
People can't complain about the launch. they were side by side until 2nd gear
While horsepower is more important at a certain point for drag racing, they totally neglected the significant torque advantage the BMW has. Not sure about Honda, but BMW almost always under rates their power figures. This wasn't a surprise. BMW power
ok but how about around a track?
I'm sure it'll be a completely different turnout
Maybe it would be different. But the title does say "DRAG BATTLE" and not "Track battle"
Peter Hammond
idk I feel like drag races are a bit pointless as in a normal scenario you won't ever be constantly driving straight lol
I think driving a front wheel drive, 5 door family hatchback around a track is completely irrelevant, don't you? Nobody buys a modern hatchback to go to the track with. It's pointless.
Malc180s
its more than just a regular family hatchback dude lol
the only people who are going to buy a Type-R are people who don't have a family xD
***** Like all these hatches, they're road cars for people who need space. Of course most people who own these will have families! It's just a hot hatch. The whole point is that it's just a regular hatch.
The half mile trap speed would be nice to know.
5000 rpms is the sweet spot!? What's the sweet spot for My Z3M?
I AM actually impressed, the civic is right there behind the 135. which is suppose to be a much quicker car and its RWD... NICE ; )
FWD takes so much away from what a Honda Civic could be!! Idk why they wouldn't switch to RWD or AWD by now!!
A rear wheel drive vehicle beat a front wheel drive vehicle in a drag race? You don't say...
Now have them both go on a track and see which is faster.
exactly
Bmw is the answer, and its way more fun to drive
+Luka Lazarevic why do you guys keep saying wheelspin is so much fun? Traction gets you through the corner faster, the civic is way more maneuverable than that ugly shit bimmer
BMW will be overall the much more satisfying driving experience. Compare this Honda to other economy cars, not an RWD M135i.
ImBarryScottCSS
Yeah, paying at least 15% more in gas, taking it in to the shop more often, and paying a higher insurance premium with little cheap or easy options to upgrade or personalize your vehicle is really worth it for that rwd feel...
The bimmer is an inline 6 turbo where as the Type R is a 2.0l turbo. one liter disadvantage. Bimmer is going to break your bank and they lose more value.
sounds as though Darth Vader is hanging on beneath the Type R when it alternates between shots!
i like these keep them coming, but who buys a manual m135i!!!!
People that actually enjoy driving their car. EVO viewers and presenters specifically.
Is it just me that noticed the Civic steering to the left and then having to cover more ground? How about driving both in a perfectly straight line so they cover equal distance.
"Which is faster", not "which is fastest". You can't have the "fastest" of two things.
Yes you can, the is the stupidest comment I've ever fucking read.
OMG, did you hear about merc A45 AMG 2.0L ? If not, you must be shocked. ;)
a roll race would have been nice
this vid shows that the type r is faster at a rolling start race. typer is 0.2 seconds slower too 60 and only 0.1 seconds slower at the end of the drag. meaning its gaining in the bnw toward the end.
LOVE THE TYPE R
335 sound so good
but not sure about this
that 335 pulled away in every gear type.didnt have a chance
better put the type r against the new rs
Just wondering how things would have been from a rolling start.
I wonder how much quicker the Type R would be if it was RWD as well
One 10th of a second looks like such a massive gap
Most powerful car won. Really useful
I would have felt better about this drag race if the BMW used was a 5-Door version.
which car wins on the track AND EVERY DAY DRIVING??
eventually the civic will pass the bmw because of the top speed of 168mph unless you have the sport package if it exists you get to 150 mph on the bimmer if not you are stuck at 130mph ... my accord does 135 so i guess the bimmer will lose too
Ok, now put them on a track.
The M135 is not available anymore, imagine what the M140 would do to the Type ugly!
Hehe i like your vids joe! When is the m135 and m2 comparison coming out?
Isnt the upcoming M140 the same car with a different badge???
+Alan Bowers No. it gets the new b58 motor which has a bit more power and torque
+Pranav Mukesh isnt it like 5hp?:')
+Mind Control Media 14hp, but also 50Nm of torque.
I found it fun that everybody cares about 0-60 but nobody asks about how many G's the both cars pull on skidpad.. :)
3.0 turbo RWD vs 2.0 turbo FWD and yet just a slight difference. Guess who is the winner?
I’ve clocked 0 - 60 in my manual m135i 4.9 secs... and it was not perfect conditions.
wow! that red civic hatch has 200hp more than my red civic hatch.
So... All the Imported car prices in the UK will go up now that they are getting out of the EU?
Depends whether Germany wants to keep their workforce employed.
"In the world of Drag Racing, RWD trumps FWD"
Hmm you know or one car was a 2 litre engine and another a 3 litre engine with both hp and tq advantage.
2979 cc turbo vs 1996 cc turbo???
when seat leon cupra 290?
Such a crime that the CTR doesn't have SH-AWD.
Why would you buy the Civic when you can have AWD Focus RS/Golf R or RWD M140i for almost the same price?
cuz it will last longer and stronger
+Vega Rapidus You don't know yet. First turbo engine in Honda in LOTS of time.
more track focused i guess
+Mind Control Media I mean the civic is more track focused that those others
m140i?
Sti vs golf r?
Civic Type R is 7:43.80 at nurburgring which is far faster than BMW M135i
wish some1 would do a 20-80 rolling start
Appears that we've resorted to bringing in BMW's now to beat out the Type R!
Fairly obvious outcome
On the track things are different, almost 15 seconds apart!. In nurburgring: Type R Civic makes 7:50.63 and BMW 135i 8:05.

No, you compare different Times. at Sport Auto the same Driver droves the Cars over the Nordschleife and BMW 8.05 and Honda 8.12 so Honda ist not faster.
This is valuable information
Wish Leaderboard video wouldn't die...
I thought the BMW would be faster because of the zf gearbox , but I got the impression it was manual?
DRAG BATTLE. Otherwise known as the most boring and irrelevant format presented by evo.
piss off lol. it's basic and necessary information
MotoBoy
necessary for who? The ricers, teenagers and illegal road racers?
As if track times are any more relevant to their buyers lol
Supcharged
Of course, a lot more people are going on tracks than on dragstrips.
Plus laptimes show every aspect of the car. Acceleration, braking and cornering.
Malteser3535 Not sure how wanting a fast car makes you a ricer, teenager, or illegal road racer, but sure!
