Great tips! If you are just starting out and do have much in the way of kitchen gadgets here are a few to get you started that will save you time and money. First is a scale. Want to make your life easier? Then after you buy that 3-5 pound value pack of burger break it down into 1 pound packs and freeze them. Do not skimp on your knives! You can get by with 2 or 3 to start, ask your butcher what their go to knives are and get the best you can. Finally a grinder. A simple meat grinder, even if it is grammas hand crank from the thirties is fine. Make sure you keep it clean is the only caveat. Make friends with your butcher and before long you will be breaking down a 4 pound boneless chuck roast and making your own chili grind for out of this world chili for game day.

Thank you for the tips. I do have to ask. Do you gave a certain book or recourse to help teach a meat clerk some useful information? I have been a meat clerk for a little while now but, I lack the information to help customers. I'm even thinking about trying to become a butcher too!

I just bought a whole C.A.B brand, 7 bone beef rib roast. I cut the bones off to smoke them later, and sliced the meat into 15 steaks. Total cost was between $7-$10 per steak... great deal in my eyes.

Can you comment on the store shaving the brown discoloration off the top of a ribeye steak? I see this often. The butcher says they dont do this....not true. I bought 7 ribeyes and reqested red in both sides. They showed me one and said they are all fresh. I returned all steals, 6 were brown on both sides. What is acceptable?

Steak NEVER means throw it on the grill. In my home anyway. I alway cook my steaks in stainless steel skillets. I save the grill for burgers or to smoke and slow cook. A nice tri tip roast cooked offset over charcoal with a little wood is awesome. Steaks are always pan fried and finished in the oven.

The only time I feel overwhelmed by a meat case is when I see the prices. As for the butcher shops touted in all these videos on UA-cam, I can tell you millions of us out here in fly-over country - you know, out there where most of the high grade beef comes from - are not going to drive 60, 70, 80 miles to a butcher shop. From where I live in Ohio, it is a 2 hour drive to a butcher shop. Round trip, plus time shopping and so on means looking at 5 hours PLUS nearly $40.00 in Biden-inflated gasoline cost, THEN paying considerably higher prices for meat.
This idiots telling everyone what to ask their butcher, etc live in such a bubble that they have no idea how absurd they sound to people living in three fourths of the country. They sound like DC politicians, not knowing what the lives or surrounding are like for average people.

Uhhh, so you don't have a supermarket anywhere near your home? Most supermarkets have a meat section with a couple butchers managing it... and I daresay most people have access to one... so I really don't understand what you're talking about.
