- I went back to my happy place, Costco, to show you how to shop for beef, chicken, seafood, lamb, pork, and more at the warehouse club. There are some great deals on meat, but you have to know what to buy and avoid. For example, organic chicken is the way to go, but I could not find a certified humane stamp, which was a bummer. Also, beware of that rotisserie chicken at Costco. The beef is an amazing deal at Costco, especially if you can find grass-fed beef, but what's the deal with blade tenderized prime steaks!? I am still blown away by the price of wild salmon, but if you can find the Norwegian farmed salmon, that is good stuff too. I hope you enjoyed this Costco review, I have another one coming tomorrow! I love your videos! I'm retired from Costco working there for over 26 years. It's good that you put comments in the comment box (usually found at the front of the store as you are leaving). They love to hear from their members and you help to educate them on what people want. Have your friends fill them out too, the more the better. Just remember that they have to find a good supplier and there has to be a good demand. Also you can ask at the Membership desk if they are just out of something and waiting for the shipment or if it is seasonal. The grass fed burgers have been a regular item at our store.
It's so depressing to see what the prices of food were not long ago in this video compared to walking into Costco today. The good old days!

Thank u for educating us! I am a chef and grocery prices are ridiculous! It's hard not to gravitate toward more affordable meats and seafood. In culinary school I learned that it is important to know where your meats come from. How animals/seafood are handled or raised and etc. This video was awesome because I am about to make a Costco run for meats and seafood this weekend! You are the best! Thanks FlavCity! This was SO helpful. Thank you so much for posting. I've noticed that my family and I are already making good choices. Honestly, I thought I ate pretty healthy until I got my cancer diagnosis last spring. After treatment, My doctor said that the major thing I could do is Change things in my diet. I wasn't eating organic because it is more expensive. But ever since we got our Costco membership, we've been in food heaven. The savings has been great. But the most important thing is that it's made it SO much easier for us to buy Organic and actually stick to it. I love these videos and am about to search for more.

This may be a little late and I didn't read through all of the comments so it might have been said but, I believe that the "Salmon" from Chile that you showed in this video in costco, it's actually a variety of Trout. "Steelhead Trout" looks very similar to Salmon and has a close-ish flavor profile (if you're pretty forgiving like most). I have seen and heard of it being used as a cheaper substitute for real Salmon and many stores don't try to educate people otherwise. Please feel free to verify as I am going on a memory from a long time ago.

Great point about blade tenderized, thanks! This is also why burgers sketch me out when they're not cooked through since ground beef is a mixture of exposed meat, and not a solid unpierced hunk of meat.

@@lovesandwich8783 Yeah, whenever I cook burgers at home to well done they're always absurdly juicy (maybe because I eat them quickly?). But if I order well done from a restaurant they're always the dry hockey pucks everyone talks about. I've never understood why there's such a stark difference.

Morgan Spurlock did a great video documentary on chicken farmers, he created his own chicken farm and contacted the USDA to get approved to sell. He was able to add things such as "free range chickens"...which is just opening a door with a fence to allow them "access" to outside, though none went out. "No antibiotics"...well that's already illegal. In total he added about 6 or 7 "feel good" labels but in actually they really meant nothing or had no effect as all chickens are raised the same.

Whoa! In Europe, Norway has a very bad reputation for farm raised fish. If health is your #1 priority, nothing beats wild-caught.

I live in Seattle in Washington State. 90% of the Alaskan fishing fleet harbors here in the off season. Never, ever consume farm raised fish. The practice is very harmful to the environment. The fish get lice from each other. The meat is mushy because the fish are stuck in small pens. And the food pellets they feed them have dye in them to give the salmon meat a red color because the food they are eating is not natural. The red color in salmon comes from the food they consume in the ocean.
This dude is also way over indexing on non-GMO feed, and foods labeled organic. Not sure who this guy is but he doesn't sound very credible from this video.

Hey Bobby. First of all thanks for the video. It was very informative and I feel more confident with shopping at Costco. I have a question: which red meat do you recommend to keep frozen? I'm trying to keep meats and seafood frozen since we're on a lockdown and it's hard for us to make these big grocery trips (we live in nyc and our cousin was nice enough to drive us to Costco.)
If I can jump on your question to Bobby... It is not crucial as to the variety of meat you want to freeze. How you freeze is the critical element in preserving quality and freshness. Best case is using a vacuum sealer, which can extend the life of your foods, (the manufacturers maintain a 5X longer. I have cooked steak 2 yrs. old and it was just as awesome as the ones I didn't forget about. Now there is an additional benefit to vacuuming. If you season it before you freeze, you can then sous vide the product. If you can't buy a vacuum sealer, take a freezer bag with the meat in it and submerge to almost the top so the water 'squeezes' the air out and away from the surface of the meat. If you can't do that wrap first in plastic wrap squeezing as much air out as you can, then wrap that in freezer paper. Remember "air is you enemy".
This was fabulous. I have been reluctant to buy meat from Costco, but this was so helpful and will end up saving me money. Thank you!

1:50 if you like your salmon criminally over cooked like I do (practically white throughout), then it’s perfectly fine to freeze previously frozen stuff. Defrost it for 6-8hrs at least, in the fridge, just straight up in the packet you froze it in (whole package or if you individually sealed it). Tastes just fine and the texture is fine

Whoa!! $6.99/lb for wild caught salmon? biden’s salmon is a lot more expensive than Trump’s salmon.
In British Columbia , Canada, we have two residential pods of Orcas. They live and travel up and down the coast. After some Norwegian fishfarm companies got permission to set up open net salmon farms scientists who track these pods started to notice that when a pod went to travel past these areas, they would veer off to get as far away from them as possible to get past them. So if the water around these nets is so toxic , I'm going to take the advise of the orcas and stay away. These fish farms pollute the water the same as a factory farmer pollutes the land. The Canadian government has withdrawn the licenses and they have to be completely gone by 2022. We are ecstatic.

Thanks for explaining blade tenderizing! I almost bought New York strip steak and I read about blade tenderizing at Costco but had no clue what they meant. Now I know for sure why not to buy it. I lime my steak rare so that is a no go.
Buy the whole subprimal and cut your own. None of the large cuts still in the cryovac packaging are blade tenderized.
I cook my steaks rare from costco all the time and had no problems whatsoever. I wouldnt worry about it. I also work in costcos meat dept

12:37. I went to my local Costco after watching this video, and the had the 100% Grass Fed Burgers. Package of 15 for $19.99. Normally I wouldn't buy frozen pre formed burgers, but! I was pleasantly surprised. They are delicious = Thanks.

Bobby, Costco just opened a Business Costco in my neighborhood and they have the prime meats in the whole packaging. This allows me to cut my Prime New York strip at the thickness that I like best and No tenderizing issues :)

Hi Bobby, just found your site and have subscribed. Are you sure about the Australian lamb at Costco being 100% grass fed? My understanding is that New Zealand's laws on lamb are very strict where Australia is not as strict at all. Keep it up, great content.

I recently saw your book at my local Costco in Hazlet NJ. I haven't bought it yet because i'm not very familiar with Keto but I've recently started looking into it.
Lamb is an amazing deal at costco. And I love the 4.99 chickens. Otherwise I think the meats are pretty overpriced and not particularly tender, even with the blade tenderization. And I agree, blade tenderizing steaks is a terrible idea. Fred Meyer is usually a very good price for their meat
The interesting thing about costco ground beef is that it expires the next day. It's all the beef that will expire tomorrow tossed in the grinder with some extra fat. That means your burger could be prime rib or tenderloin. It's also incredibly lean. You do have to be able to use it very quickly or freeze it that day though.

I gotta say these are some phenomenal deals however I also work as butcher with Albertsons I got my self a Rib-eye Roast for 4.77 per pound plus my employees discount/deals and rewards and managed to grave myself 20$! 13 pound RIB Eye Roast for this thanksgiving!
Norwegian farm raised Salmon has had really bad press about toxic chemical, antibiotics used etc. I do not know if they have cleaned their act up but I would be wary. I’m living in Uk and Costco stopped buying Scottish salmon and went for Norwegian, presumably because of cost. I only buy Scottish (from researched farms) or wild caught.

Laith A You’re absolutely right. Norwegian salmon farmers have been caught-out with highly toxic water conditions. The government is actively trying to cover it up. Stick to your Scottish salmon and I’ll stick to my NZ salmon here down under.

Regarding scallops and shrimp. Most often they are full of sodium tripolyphosphate (STP or STPP), which is a salt that adheres itself to the cells causing them to retain water. It's used by the food industry to add weight to the food for more profit. It cannot be washed out, and can only be removed by heating, hence the white glue-like ooze that comes out of seafood when cooked. It's hard to find seafood without STP. I've checked Costo's shrimp and it's on the label. Check the unpeeled, as they sometimes don't have it but the peeled will most often. Also, scallops are known as "wet" (with STPP) or "Dry" (without STPP)...so obviously dry is best and will sear in a pan instead of steam.
Some of this was very interesting! But bruh... Put the stuff back the way you found it instead of just throwing it back all wonky. So annoying, staff has to follow up behind you and straighten it up.

Regarding the roast chicken, what really impressed me is that your previous video showed that they put a lot of hormones and antibiotics to lower the cost. Since then, I never buy that chicken again. And since then, they start to put "No added hormones" signal there, lol. That video was also the first video taught me to read the ingredients. Thank you Bobby.

Don't care I shop for my money worth
Every time I read an article from those health food fruitcakes, I laugh. At 73, I've eaten many a cows, pigs, chickens(not my fav), seafood throughout the world and am still as healthy as can be. I remember a health food nut Euell Gibbons in the early 60's appearing in ads eating healthy food like grape nuts and pine nuts. He died at 64 and looked more like 90. I have no problem with corn fed or grain fed beef, so long as not animal by-products. This Non-GMO bull shit is for the birds-literally. Many plant cross pollinate naturally by wind or other means. It's been going on through millennial. Now all of a sudden it's bad for you. Rice was engineered to harvest quicker to feed the hunger. I guest it's better to let people be safe but starved to death. People sits in ivory tower have the luxury to pick and choose. People in Africa starving don't give a shit about a cow is grass fed, corn fed, or grain fed. They are just happy to have meat or engineered corn. I would you rather die at 80 with some kind of disease then starved to death at 15.

Boy am I glad I went to the Tumwater WA Costco last week and picked up some of those grass fed beef patties. I love them. They still had a bunch of them. Also, I knew that the rotisserie chicken has stuff I don't need, however.....I am on a limited budget and I got about 10 meals of meat and 9 cups of bone broth from it for $5. I balance it out with mostly organic meats etc. I also got the organic eggs for instance. Most of my veggies come from local farmers who farm organically. and I get my fish from a local seafood place that carries a lot of wild fish from local waters. Not cheap though so that is where my money goes. I love Costco and am glad my son has a membership.

Great video and I agree with everything you said. I already knew all this information about meat/seafood but I’m so glad your getting the information out there for people who have no idea about meat practices, feed, and what’s added. I hope Costco will continue to provider it’s savvy shoppers higher quality meat options and more organic. Paying a premium for a membership should come with better options. As a Physician Assistant who’s done a lot of research on nutrition and holistic health, I just want to say spot on and good job explaining all of this. And one more thing, most people buy the rotisserie chicken because they leave exhausted and hungry and it’s a quick fast option for many. I don’t like the idea of getting non-organic poultry. Suggestion for Costco: prepare some organic rotisserie chicken for higher $$ and let people chose. I would pay more for an organic rotisserie chicken already cooked. Great content! Keep informing people and hopefully one day we can ban Glyphosate/Monsanto/Roundup/GMO and all practices creating TOXIC FOOD.

I buy the wild Costco salmon A LOT and almost always re-freeze after trimming, portioning and vacuum sealing. I have not noticed any texture difference vs eating immediately.

Try the wild-caught sockeye from the frozen foods section. Only frozen once and they are all individually cryo-vac packed.

Know that there is a HUGE difference between frozen thawed seafood! The major difference is time from processing to freezing, which presumes sub-0 degree freezing, then it's THAWED and repackaged!
Unless you can buy fresh, buy the farm raised steelhead from Norway (only!)!

Of note about "organic" chicken. The term "organic" being owned by the US government is subject to changes and revisions. Organic chicken feed is allowed to have non-organic/synthetic protein in it. Specifically methionine, which is a major factor in poultry feed. The word "organic" is a political term with it's definition being a constant moving target. There is little integrity in it.

I was raised in Mississippi. And I’ve eaten a ton of catfish. And caught a lot in my younger days. I don’t intend to stop eating catfish.
People are just turned off because it's a bottom feeder. My family is Hungarian and we used to go carp fishing. The fish tasted fantastic, if you know how to make it. I've even had bullhead and the flesh is beautiful and tasty.
People think that bottom feeders are eating poop when in fact they are eating insects, small crustaceans, etc. Same type of food as other fish.
My pap makes us catfish he catches all the time. My favorite is beer battered and deep fried in peanut oil😍super yummy

I caught a quick glimpse of the Prime ribeye steak you picked up and noticed it was missing the spinalis and then you picked up the spinalis and said it was your favorite cut of meat. The Costcos in my area (Central Valley California-Stockton, Modesto, Manteca) started removing the spinalis just from the prime ribeye (not from the Choice) about a year ago and began selling them separately at a higher price (now they are both the same price). (They use to have both the intact prime ribeye and spinalis before that but they discontinued the spinalis for awhile and later resorted to just getting the spinalis from the prime ribeyes they were selling. A disservice to prime ribeye fans who relish the spinalis part of the ribeye.)
I found this to be such a conniving, deceitful, practice (when it was priced higher than the ribeye) that I stopped buying the prime ribeye altogether. Now, with the pandemic, both prime ribeyes and spinalis meat are just over the top at about $22/lbs. in my area so buying them isn't really in the best interest of my pocket book when I can get it at my local steak restaurants for about the same price and with loads of side dishes.
I wonder which Costco you were at (?) because I've seen other recent Costco shopping videos that still sell the prime ribeye intact, without stealing the spinalis off of them to be sold separately. This led me to believe they were just doing it at the lesser affluent cities because the videos that showed intact ribeyes were in more influential cities.
I’ve seen the spinalis sold as a separate individual cut at Costco as well but I haven’t seen the eyes sold individually before. If it’s ribeye it’s always the entire cut in tact. I’m in Texas though so maybe they know better than to mess with a Texan’s steak. I’m also starting to see more tomahawk ribeyes as well. Last time I was in Costco these were only $15/lb for prime which is incredible.
The biggest crime is the stupid blade tenderizing. No one is buying a prime steak and cooking it to 160.

I noticed that blade tenderized at costco some time ago it is mind boggling. We buy the large whole pieces and cut trim and re-package its a good bargain
i used to do that as well but my wife doesn't eat beef. which infuriates me to no end as now i have to buy tiny roasts at the local grocer at twice the price per weight.
is there any way to suggest or ask costco why they do this? There's gotta be a reason they've decided to do this. Really strange
@@johnadamczyk6213 cooking them longer with sous vide would correct that issue and you'd still be able to have rare, med-rare, etc.
Wish I had room for another dedicated freezer I would totally buy those large whole pieces myself, part them out, and vacuum seal for later.
@@johnadamczyk6213 i work for costcos meat dept. Why do we do it. Bc it vastly improves the product. Eat a tenderized steak vs a non tenderized one and i guarntee its a night and day difference. I personally dont pay attention to that cook to 145 label. I eat steak rare and had no issue from them and not heard of members having issues either.

Sockeye salmon now costs between $20 to $30 a pound when it's out of season. $6.99 a pound would make me very suspicious.
