Del Harvey: The strangeness of scale at Twitter
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- When hundreds of thousands of Tweets are fired every second, a one-in-a-million chance - including unlikely sounding sounding scenarios that could harm users - happens about 500 times a day. For Del Harvey, who heads Twitter's Trust and Safety Team, these odds aren't good. The security maven spends her days thinking about how to prevent worst-case scenarios while giving voice to people around the globe. With deadpan humor, she offers a window into how she keeps 240 million users safe.

I just cut the CRAP out of my toe on the bannister and I'm bleeding. I'm gonna get SHOT if I bleed on the carpet.
lmaoooo
Yeah
😂😂😂
Del has really good posture and stood on heels for a long time time talking. She should take a seat over there.
*slow clap* you, sir, (or madam) officially have won the comments. You are the champion of opinions for this entire video.
guybrush1701 Thank you. Your comment was the cleanest best pleasure.
That’s my line!
Hahaha
I love how the comment section is full of the tcap community
She's cute though, built good.
How are you, sir?
What?! No way! O_o
3:45 two words: "Role Playing Twitter Chat As Dogs" dude
Ya feel me?
May i blank your blank?
Lemme get a band aid if I bleed all over the carpet I'll get shot.
Y'all are killing me😂😂😂
EiDXoF shoot you made me laugh lol
have a seat right over there on the other side of the bar for me please.
It's Lee Greer! It's Lee Greer!
did he bring McDonalds? double cheeseburger no pickles.
@@jamesgentry13 and some Mikes lemonade... 😂
@@jamesgentry13 the fries might be cold
Not much... who are you?
I’d really really REALLY like for this not to go home!
Come on in man I just WHACKED my toe on the banister
That title is so misleading. I was expecting something interesting involving unexpected behavior at massive scales, not pictures of dogs, cats, and scrubbing EXIF data.
Did she wack her toe on the banister before walking out on the stage?
"People do WEIRD things." - So true.
she's a weird speaker.... reminding people of those serious teachers that everyone hates
I think I'd be a weird speaker if I spent all day thinking about how cat pictures can kill me.
I actually really like this talk. It is fairly enlightening and kind of fun.
well that's another 9 minutes of my life i'l never get back..
I miss her on To Catch A Predator.
This is brilliant - the subject is fascinating and Del is a very eloquent speaker.
Scale Studies needs to be a school thing.
what the hell has happened to TED. There are other platforms for advertising please.........
She was on to catch a predator
The Terminator Did they catch her?
allnotathome Please have a seat over there
@@crazyforcoffee5950 uno reverse, that’s my line!
With all the charm of a Cinderella stepsister, still just a bit too awkward to pull off humor. Being patronizingly assumptive in the ignorance of others doesn't help.
Whoa!! That actually IS her real name!
I thought it was her decoy name. 😂
it's not her real name.
WHAT? No way!
@@polygon2745 maybe she had it legally changed?
i know her legal first name is allison
@@cysticcrystal2998 Allison Shea unless it was legally changed to Del Harvey
I would never listen to someone who doesn't know how to pronounce the word "lascivious". Or choose that haircut.
So I guess Alison Shea has legally changed her name to the name she used while with Perverted Justice huh?
She also now actually looks like a woman. And seems taller now too. In other words, unlike her time w PJ, she actually now looks pretty hot
My Excuse to come HEEYAH, I went to Lantic Sidy!
But instead you came here…
I gotta admit that when you said "Yo bitch is also a popular Breaking Bad reference"; I pointed at the screen and said "Yeah, bitch!"
Does anyone else remember her from To Catch A Predator?
“IF I BLEED ON THE BANISTER IM GONNA GET SHOT”
I feel as if Del is the type of woman you can catch a good football game at the bar with and have a great time
"My job at Twitter, is to pretend to be little boys and flirt with grown men"

So in the end the grave threats that she has stopped, removing geodata from the pictures people post.
Is there anything else? no, ok. How much they paying you again?
Here's a picture of my house, no way will anyone be able to track that.
She was just giving examples of different types of threats to illustrate the difficulty of creating parameters to filter out threats that don't seem bad on the surface, while allowing legitimate messages through that might seem bad on the surface, and how that difficulty is compounded by the sheer scale that she is working with. This talk was not meant to be a description of all the work she has ever done, seeing as that would make for an overly long and tedious video to sit through
Can you really not tell that she is deliberately dumbing things down into simple terms to try and convey the concept that 'extremely rare occurrences' happen quite frequently, and that simply writing filters for these instances aren't good enough? How silly of you.
David Bradbury
Yeah the ted audience needs to be talked at using the lowest common denominator.
Her point that a one in million occurrence happens on average 500 times a day when there are 500 million actions a day.
How complex must the math have been.
magottyk
Many people don't really think about that in those terms - And it isn't because they're not doing the math... Most people don't typically have to work at that sort of scale and have preconceived notions about things with extremely low odds. It isn't trying to talk down to the audience - It is simply keep everyone on the same page in case you haven't thought of it from that viewpoint before.
David Bradbury
I was looking for the "but there's more" part that usually accompanies these type of TED talks, but there was none.
The other thing that struck me was that the talk didn't appear concerned with how people unthinkingly put stuff on the internet that could help someone track them, but that the concern was with hidden data that could implicate the company in a lawsuit.
It seemed more about protecting the company rather than protecting the actual users from themselves.
i stubbed my toe on the bannister
Where is frag ?
What am I? Chopped liver?!
I like how some people think we will look at the comment section without looking at the video
That talk felt like advertising.
She's REALLY interesting! :)
Like white paint drying, it is simply a wonder! 😂😂
"ideas worth spreading": blatant false advertising
Stripping the geodata out of twit pics seems safe, until you consider someone who's lost tweeting in the hopes of being found.
If a lost person had access to the internet, s/he could use another service.
2:26 as an ex tcap decoy she knows this better than most 😆
So was that thing a robot?
daria gives ted talk
Im wandering, for some time now actually, WHY the geo data wus in the pictures in th first place ??
I found her understated insidious message making her the most compelling TED speaker I can remember.
IT’S DEL HARVEY, IT’S DEL HARVEY
Cliffs:
Twitter grew really fast and is now huge(duh)
500mm/1mm = 500(uhhhhuhhuh)
Twitter strips geolocation data from images.
Anyone notice that after the Georgia sting, she was not around any of the female decoys anymore?
Notice how handsy she was up until then? Coincidence?
I hope her toe has healed from the Banister stub
7:50-7:57 Well, except for the predators you caught
"one-in-a-million chances crop up nine times out of ten"
FLAWLESS LOGIC
She's so unpleasant. Also, she looks like Gillian Jacobs maybe she's a real life Britta
Is it like cops...I've seen cops?
Del Harvey: The strangeness of scale at Twitter
TED Talk...
She's really great at public speaking.
hahaha this person is a trip! :)
2:27 That's for damn sure.
she's a replicant!
Twitter do a good job all in all, although an area they fail to deal with is the amount of individuals showing hundreds of pornographic images, so when you are reading down the tweets you immediate come to full body revealed in some very open positions, I am not a prude so can deal with this as and when it happens, my concerns are the millions of younger users such as teenagers, I have worked with many victims who have been talked into posing naked for another believing these will never been shown to the world, then there are the ones who did not know they were being filmed and or having photos taken, lastly and most concerning, if a person who has never slept with another sees some of these images, they get to thinking about similarities with their own body, before you know it many problems develop, especially the really young ones, I trust someone will read this who cares, Much Love to you
I like her bangs. 😊
del looks like jodi arias
I guess I'm the only one finding this woman extremely uncharismatic.
Nope you're not the only one
She has the charisma of a stone statue. But for some reason that just makes me wanna do some exceptionally naughty things with her while she deadpans the whole time.
She gives an amusing talk, too.
people watch TED for charisma? isn't that what friends are for?
brostepisthebest
It's a good thing to have a bit of charisma if your job is to give presentations.
Can't imagine that someone would disagree on that...
she has the charisma of a lumpy wet turd.
i dont like her. she basically talked herself up as some hero
a nice advertisement on why twitter is so good and protective for the users by sttipping the geo data out of their photos
I like her, she's cool.
Yeah she is way cool!! With her hatred for her own sexuality, her talk that about meta data, which no one ever had the slightest clue about, the fact that has no idea about IT but talks like she rights the code. Yeah she is so cool.
Some nice free promotion for twitter being a "safe" zone. Good job TED, -good job.-
Exactly what do you want someone to talk about then? Hypothetical scenario with a generic corporation that doesn't make anyone intrested? You do know that people that work in security for a huge corporation do have to work for that corporation right? Do you expect someone that work for twitter should start talking about how facebook deal with matters of security when they don't even work there? If you want that then go pick up the most generic textbook about internet security you can find where there is no real examples.
Less than a minute into it, and I can't help but notice that the presenter neglected to compare tweets to accounts. What it belies is the truth of scale in growing a total world population from roughly one billion around the turn of the nineteenth century to today seven billion plus. It's not sustainable on the planet or Twitter, judging by their stock price since inception.
Twitter is the cleanest ,best pleasure
She’s in a heap of trouble.
"Role-Playing as Dogs", thought she meant furries. Was very distured lmao
Interesting and enjoyable
Seriously?! You should watch blue paint dry! It's totally incredible!!! Smh
had the option to look sexy: just said no.
Still a turn on.
different strokes...
Why don't you take a seat right over there?
+John Petterson it's alittle too late to be prowling around these parts huh?
+John Petterson it's alittle too late to be prowling around these parts huh?
This was an incredibly poorly delivered and poorly planned presentation. No doubt this speaker has great brilliance but her planning and content choices were seemingly thrown together. Not up to TED standards.
It would be interesting to see Twitter earth. With that Geocoded data, an option to let people share that data, and for people to allow that data, still maintains protections.
I just whacked the heck out of my toe on the bannister
isn't his real fake name Allison Shea? and he's a dude pretending to be a woman and in a lezbian relationship with a female cause that's what's hip these days but in essence, he's actually hetero?. Doesn't he actually work for the gubbernment? I think a guy named Chan (Fed boi inc), when Allison was at twitter, sent an email to some kid named Yoel granting a handful of security clearances to hand out to whomever he/his boss saw fit (wasn't Del/Allison his boss?) 30 days before the presidential selection in 2020, didn't he? I thought i heard that somewhere in the ongoing congressional hearings with the twatter peeps. But maybe my tin foil hat is picking up static. I dunno.
what's up with the weird comments?
'EY BRO!
interesting stuff.... She has a poke face on mainly because shes nervous :/ 8:12 finally smiled
I don't use Twitter. It looks like a big waste of time. I have better things to do with my time.

She was late giving this talk, because she stubbed her toe and needed to get a bandaid.

a censor boasting... where is your scull and bones hat Herr Flig?
Worst ted talk ever.
WOW!!! These guys have it really rough for real... i mean the amount of BS they have to go through and make sure is legit would just drive me nuts... i respect people like her or i'm sure "hims" out there for they do rough work... good things guys...
5:22 Nope, that's still spam.
All "importance" is relative.
Each individual spam is important to *someone*, but never to everyone. I don't really need to know about police abuse in some place on the other side of the world, if i paid attention to every incident i'd be flooded with tweets constantly.
Also, every delusional paranoid schizophrenic thinks their insights are the most important thing in the world. You shouldn't trust people to use broadcast services responsibly.
Why should you EVER need to censor a twitter account? You shouldn't.
interesting
