Great interview, guys! I've always respected Phil for being so approachable and agreeing to do these types of interviews. He is a class act, and the gaming industry wouldn't be the same without him.
Great interview. Phil, in case you end up reading these comments, I wanted to share a quick testimonial. Your initiatives regarding cloud gaming, play anywhere, and the accessibility of Game Pass Ultimate brought this lifelong Nintendo gamer over to the Xbox ecosystem 2 years ago. I was blown away at the time with playing Bethesda games on my MacBook Pro with the controller of my choice and as soon as that first month of GP ended, I bought a Series S and discovered a whole new ecosystem of games. In short, you and your team are doing great work, and I’m confident that you’re on the right track by prioritizing the ecosystem’s success over console competition. It’s surely going to pay off. And on a personal note, thank you for leading with humility and focusing on the good of the community.
Good to see you joined Xbox! But I have two serious questions... 1. Why did you choose an Xbox Series S over an Xbox Series X? 2. Do you only subscribe to Game Pass or do you also purchase the games you enjoy?
Thanks. I chose the Series S due to cost at the outset. I also enjoy the portability and often slip it into a backpack while traveling. I mostly buy my games at very steep discounts, and subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate once every 6 months or so to test out games before deciding whether or not to purchase them.
How can anyone not like Phil Spencer? Such a down to earth dude and probably the only video game CEO that is as accessible as he is and he is always online playing games...gota love that.
Putting more Xbox games on rival platforms while PlayStation pays third devs to keep games off Xbox. Smaller devs choose to skip Xbox because they feel its redundant. Both PS and Nintendo continue to keep their games exclusive and not putting them on Xbox in return for Xbox games. It's a clown move, Phil.
The whole gamepass thing and buying a huge publisher like Activision made Microsoft change lines. The majority of users on Xbox aren't spending 70 dollars on software anymore, Microsoft shareholders want to make profit from the gaming division after investing billions to buy publishers and studios. Microsoft is on the road to becoming the biggest 3rd party publisher of IPs on all gaming platforms while still offering hardware for those who enjoy services like gamepass and etc. This is a win for gaming as whole, folks that would never have brought an Xbox now get to experience software on their platform of choice.
@SB-hi2wb I'd be all for it if we got some PS games on Xbox. Tsushima, Spiderman 1 and Helldivers 2, for example. Until then, it's a fat shit on the consumers. If it wasn't for the fans, Xbox would've died in the Xbox One gen.
@@SuperShrooms The only thing keeping Sony and Nintendo from having to port software over to Xbox is that they have a strong worldwide base. Xbox the console on the other hand is very niche outside of the United States. That investing spree into publishers and studios only works in the eyes of shareholders if they have a large base to sell software to. Microsoft are now looking to make 70 dollars from users of different platforms while keeping a cheaper price of entry to software with a service like gamepass on xbox hardware which Sony and Nintendo won't allow on their boxes
This is an extremely small minded mindset. This doesn't even take into consideration that the additional revenue from going multiplatform will give them more funds to defend against Sony buying exclusivity. It also ignores that more and more publishers are abandoning doing exclusivity deals. It also ignores a new approach Xbox seems to be taking that we saw with Ninja Gaiden 4. Xbox taking on a publisher role and taking on some of the game funding while still allowing multiplatform releases is EXTREMELY appealing to developers. Any developer would take that deal over whatever exclusivity BS Sony offers.
@maizeman90 well I hope you're right, man. I don't want Xbox to go down the shitter, but as a long time fan and consumer of the platform I can't help but feel like I picked the wrong platform to build a digital library on. Now that Xbox games are slowly making their way onto PlayStation, I feel like if I had built my collection on there, I'd have everything in one place, not having to buy multiple consoles to enjoy everything. I'll never be able to play PS exclusives on Xbox. So now I regret making Xbox my main source of games. Like I said, if we got PS games on Xbox, I'd be all for it. Shareholders are happy. I feel dumped on 💩 and I'm not the only one. I dont care if Xbox games come to PlayStation if PlayStation games come to Xbox. Predator Hunting Grounds doesn't cut it. They wouldn't have parted with Death Stranding if they had a choice.
My god the amount of people in this comment section that didn’t understand what Phil is talking about when it comes to multiplatform. Hes spot on, the biggest games are everywhere, people choose where they want to play, they aren’t stopping hardware. Maybe rewatch it and you might understand.
What's funny is the PlayStation fans seem to think Xbox guys are somehow upset. I'm glad I have both consoles. We get a good value from Microsoft. Much better than just having one console. Over the course of a generation having two is cheaper than having only PlayStation no matter how many Microsoft games go to PlayStation, we don't care.

I kind of agree. Keep the developers happy facilitate getting their game to as many people as possible. Making it as easy and effortless for them and of course the great games will come. And when you have the games the community will be happy as well
Because we already know. Most things will go. And some will be timed most likely: everything will be in gamepass and play anywhere. And available to as many people as possible

11:09 - this is somewhat of a useless question, because you technically haven’t needed an Xbox to play Xbox games since the Xbox One days when Microsoft started the “play anywhere” campaign that put all their games on PC. You’ve been able to play Xbox games on PC since 2015, that’s 10 years of not needing an Xbox to play Xbox games. So why all of a sudden is there a concern, and not one 10 years ago? Also, your intro is louder than the rest of the video, you should really fix that, lower the volume on the intro.
The takeaway: Hardware isn’t going away. Accessibility expands further. More games will be published. The only thing dying is Exclusivity gate keeping. It’s all about how many games you can publish and provide access to. Respect to beliefs and vision of a Gamer named PHIL SPENCER.
They can say hardware isn't going away but how will it be successful? I think you can argue Xbox software will be more successful but I think it comes at the cost of hardware.
@ At some point PC and Handhelds will be all we need. Physical Media storages have already moved to Digital. A console can be successful if they actually learn to provide price to performance for next gen.
exclusives are done. Whatever Nintendo has been gatekeeping, emulation always finds a way. And well for now Xbox still has a hardware in coming (I’m just waiting on handheld.) so I wouldn’t just put consoles out…yet.
From day one it was clear they wanted to become Netflix in terms of being everywhere, if they could put gamepass on playstation somehow they would stop making consoles tomorrow
Phil was asked about the hardware and why should someone get an Xbox, he said we put the games first, i HOPE im wrong but that seems like no more Xbox but more games... i would love to see a world with only PS and they charge 100$ per game and a 1000$ console... good job Phil.
I don't get why Phil sometimes acts like MS is inventing game publishing. Plenty of publishers already try to put their games on as many screens as they can. They have done it for decades. Look, Sony and Nintendo still work with exclusives because of the business benefit of owning the platform. This is a business benefit that MS chased for 2 decades, but nowadays their enormous expense on IP and publishing has forced them to think outside of their console, which simply cannot by itself make their games profitable enough.
The point is that the games arent the only things moving, but is the whole platform. My account, my progress, my Friends, my achivements, and even my purchased stuff. This is the main objective here, they are Building that Only problem is that while they can do that with almost no problems for PC, Smartphones, smart TV's, Quest ecc., on PS and Nintendo is way harder due to the closed systems, but is possible Minecraft is the perfect example: i have it on Switch as well and there are Xbox achivements, the Xbox account, the Xbox Friends and even the dlcs move across the consoles.
I think Xbox is going to have a hard time moving consoles with the strategy next generation. I like Game Pass but there are a lot of people on the platform that don’t use it. Unless the next Xbox is truly special, a lot of people are probably gonna jump ship.
I would've asked him about how his statements here directly conflict with what they said under oath to the FTC about exclusives being required to compete, then about his lie last year reassuring their customers that Indy wasn't one of the games being considered for a port. And finally, I would've asked him why Xbox won't end up in a death spiral of third parties not putting games on Xbox because of declining sales. I also might've asked him about his complete (and uncharacteristic) lack of communication the last year, while widely reported rumours have swirled around saying basically nothing will be exclusive any more, and why Series S and Series X owners shouldn't feel burned at seeing a lack of first-party output for most of this generation, only for ports to be announced when the games finally start releasing. Until about 12 months ago, he was fine "putting walls up" to Xbox's games, and the idea that he only recently discovered devs want lots of people to play their games is frankly farcical.
Xbox is a joke now. If they were the number one selling console, Xbox wouldn't be doing what they're doing now. The truth is, they got stomped, they aren't selling games because everyone relies on Game Pass and now they have to put those games on other platforms because they spent almost $100 billion dollars no Xbox fan asked for. With that said, I just cancelled my Game Pass Ultimate today after 6 years, I've never seen a company so confused on who they are and lost their identity, the are constantly shifting strategies every 6-12 months, all of the lies, I'm just over all of the bs to be honest. Phil Spencer and Xbox sold me on a different console back in 2019-2020, it's almost like they just told people what they wanted to hear and I as an ex-Xbox fan felt deceived. Regardless of all that now, I moved on to play games somewhere else where they will get my money and I will never buy anything related to Microsoft or Xbox moving forward. They lost my trust.
@@Scottoest the thing about exclusivity is required to compete if all you’re competing for is the same customers in the console space. He assured Indy wasn’t part of the 4 games they were announcing. It won’t end in a death spiral because those sales will still be at least 30 million consoles. If the rumours are true and they do indeed put steam on their device that means every game is coming to Xbox.

I care about games, not platforms.
I really want someone, one of these days, to ask him the real tough (perhaps uncomfortable) questions we all have regarding Xbox, instead of these softball/kiss ass questions.
Xbox gamers are now second class gamers. Microsoft might make more money this way, but the XBOX community is dead. Xbox Original, Xbox 360. You were epic, you were legendary, R.I.P.

Total opposite from what Nintendo says in their interview on how their hardware services their content. That hardware doesn't matter unless you have great games that make use of it.
Phil completely ducked the question of why would we need an xbox console when all games will be on other platforms. Im an og xbox player. But this is very valid. No pr talk. Yeah, it's a wrap for Xbox hardware. At this point just make the switch to PS5 along side Nintendo. No one is going to build a library on a dead console that's about to be the next Dreamcast. They want out of the console market they are basically telling you to go buy a playstation.

Whoever finds a way to put games on the cloud and stream them successfully will be the one to kill the consoles existence. Phil lost some weight, looks good. Idk about all this news, makes me sad xbox lost its pride and will no longer have exclusives and moving away from hardware. Hopefully not fully becoming like SEGA. The back and forth with messaging this gen was just the worst. Xbox one hurt the brand a lot. With not a lot of exclusive games releasing in 2 generations made them lose the console war. The games are finally coming but now it's too late they'll be on every platform. It just means xbox is now going to be making a lot of $$$$ to make up for that 69 Billion and I hope that's a good thing. More players experiencing what we've had for years is cool but xbox still doesn't have all those great ps exclusives. I do hope the brand lives and not just go away like so many Microsoft deaths. Companies need competition to drive each other to do better. If xbox goes away playstation will have power to influence games and console prices. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt because no way could a dude be that overly emotional & reactive without even being provoked. I immediately unsubbed him on youtube & Gamertag Radio & never came back. takes you out of the experience when you think the people you watch are kind people but IRL its all for show & its fake & IRL oftentimes you're listening to horrible people. this was before Parris' CDPR Cyberpunk yellow chair shill controversy. once I saw that I was like "yeah this dude ain't cool at all." Parris could lose all that weight but it doesn't matter if you're still a bad person on the inside.
I’ve been a PlayStation fan through every generation, but I was also a satisfied 360 customer. If Phil is serious about this Play Anywhere thing then he needs to get his ducks in a row. Because a lot of Xbox games are in fact not Play Anywhere. They have to be bought separately on PC. And cross-save support is even more of a gamble. This initiative is not new either so either get serious or Valve will eat your lunch.
the reason for that is simple many devs dont want to do that they want to sell a pc version, a ps5 version, a xbox version which makes sense. Most publishers do that mostly as part of a game pass deal or xbox marketing.
Yes, but their first party games, majority of them are cross save, cross progression, cross buy. It's mostly only some of the older ABK games and Bethesda's online games because of the ever issues to allow them to be cross progression. Every new Xbox first party title is play anywhere.
Not to mention a lot of the experience in some of them being more unequal now too. Like with the Master Chief Collection for instance. You can't even play that E3 DEMO for Halo 2 unless you own the collection on PC for no good reason!
@@keijijohnson9754 Actually there is a reason ...i don't know why it's so difficult to look things up lol. Its because of the way the E3 demo was re-created and made by modders. Its not compatible in the same way on the console.

I don't know how you got Phil Spencer with 5K subs but well done mate. Also, the solution to this PS v Xbox is actually pretty simple. Exclusivity for 2 years on Xbox, then it goes to PS5. You're welcome.
Well, us true gamers have been saying it for over 5 years...XBOX AS A SINGULAR PLATFORM, IS DEAD If you're a console gamer, there is NO POINT in having an Xbox console, unless your part time and enjoy Gamepass. Put matt boots in charge didn't he talk about spending Sony out of business, we need someone who is going to make xbox compete against Sony n Nintendo especially now they have all these studios. Of course exclusives didn't work b4 because you had a cpl gd exclusives now it would be undeniable and people would buy xbox. But fine I'm not giving xbox a penny from now on
Is really Hard, to see how they destroy the xbox legacy, worst of All, they abandoned their fans with this declarations, why not admit that they're already multiplataform? , why still keeping that rotten speech? Is obvious that a xbox have no sense these days
I have mad respect and love for Phil. I know he has higher ups he has to deal with too. However, by putting heavy hitters on other platforms like PS Nintendo to it will die lude the fandom of xbox. No one will associate XBox as a console. As a Console ONLY gamer ... it seems like there will be a line that doesn't have a hard stop and the console will be left behind.
Question for Parris Lily you mentioned winning a contest trip to the Xbox shindig for the 360 I believe, can you elaborate on that? I've also seen Danny talk about manifestation on social media, do you also practice manifestation and do you think the law of attraction had anything to do with you winning that contest all of those years ago?
The look of absolute defeat and low energy is hilarious what happened to that guy who purchase companies for make exclusive for the Xbox platform and turn "only four games" to know this😂😂
Dude is rich and happy. He couldn't care less about the Xbox fanboys crying. He exists on a completely different wave length. It's like an average person caring about what the Amish are doing or how they're feeling.
Phil himself said every 30% of profit that Sony gets from an Xbox game sale on their platform, they invest in trying to kill the Xbox brand. It's true and Sony has been deadly serious about doing this going back to the Sega days. It's possible for Xbox to overcome by turning thy cheek and being holier than thou but do they have the brand power to do so? I don't know. We'll know when Game Pass and MS Studios has a steady flow of games for 2+ years straight (just started with COD and Indy) and if they make any progress in bringing in all kinds of gamers to their ecosystem (GP, XBox, whatever). They deserve it for sure. The scope and breadth of their first party games is unmatched.
Pena for some reason I think phil means when making games for Nintendo and Playstation I think he means every game they publish that was meant to be multiplat pr make sense like Ninja Gaiden, sea of thieves, Indiana, Fallout, Scrolls, Blade and all the other games from Bethesda and Activision will go multiplat
Oh yea I think they even mentioned it a couple weeks ago that they are actively working on making the pc Xbox experience better. I also think they are primarily doing it for the handheld which I’m super pumped about
They don't promote their UA-cam channels much. Their podcast is what they focus more on. By contrast their podcast channel here on UA-cam only has about 230 subscribers... and they post the exact same content as in their own channels (except Parris) so there is no incentive to subscribe to one over the other... By the way, this video is from their audio podcast, that's why they don't care about the editing or how it looks. They mostly care about the audio.
His Hardware discussion pretty much confirms that stupid OEM strategy of getting others to use the xbox name. That is DOA on its own but when you add the fact that yrou games are everywhere it's just a money grab attempt for 3rd party hardware OEMs and xbox. Then they could say "welp you guys didn't buy so we are out"
Yeah, its annoying to see delusional Xbox fanboys still believing this guy words about "Xbox hardware still being really important to the business" when all the movements they have been doing in the past months are in pro to kill xbox hardware
I expect the OEM strategy to basically end up like steam machines but with windows instead in a future that Microsoft is currently working on where Xbox and Windows are merged successfully so it can work in a living room similar to SteamOS. It did fail when Valve tried it some years ago but the biggest reason was because steam machines were running Linux and there wasn't nearly the compatibility with games that there is now regarding Linux gaming. This isn't an issue with Windows so it might work. I don't expect Microsoft to release another subsidized closed ecosystem hardware box like Sony as A: that clearly wasn't working for them as a strategy and B: they certainly don't stand a chance of having that be a winning formula now after everything that has gone down. On a side note a lot of people talk about steam machines potentially getting another attempt now but I just don't see it working again. Linux compatibility is good for the deck's form factor because people are mostly going to be sticking to single player games on that. For a living room box it's just still not viable to not have compatibility with some of the biggest PC video games like Fortnite, League of Legends, GTA V, Battlefield, etc. The situation regarding multiplayer games on Linux isn't only not getting better it's actually gotten worse in the past year or so.
Sadly as nice as it is to have access to games on multiple devices xbox has destroyed its console in the persuit of profit. I bought a series x day one and now its just gathering dust as every game they release I buy on steam instead where it runs better (it's a shame truely). Exclusively on a console in opposition to a competitor is what made buying a console worth it. I buy ps games cause I can only get them on there, I buy nintendo games on switch cause they can only play on there. Making games for everyone is great but I'll never invest in an xbox console again its now pointless
I don't think a platform can exist and sell Hardware without exclusives.. I think it's going to be a terrible decision for Xbox's future.. fast money to kill your platform... you no longer have to go to the Xbox store or be in the Xbox store ecosystem or even buy Hardware.. I think that's stupid and so do most gamers

You get access to a world class gaming subscription service that has no true competitor in any meaningful way, and you get the benefit of having the ability to access their games across mobile/cloud, PC with cross buy, cross save, cross progression. The console also has the ability to be used as an emulation machine and has several features that the PlayStation doesn't even offer like quick resume.

The takeaway:
Hardware isn’t going away.
Accessibility expands further.
More games will be published.
The only thing dying is Exclusivity gate keeping. It’s all about how many games you can publish and provide access to.
Respect to beliefs and vision of a Gamer named PHIL SPENCER.
Let's go! Phil makes the gravy taste better.
Hardware isn't going away like exclusives weren't going away 😂
exclusives are done. Whatever Nintendo has been gatekeeping, emulation always finds a way. And well for now Xbox still has a hardware in coming (I’m just waiting on handheld.) so I wouldn’t just put consoles out…yet.
that's nice, not a single reason to buy xbox again then. Ps5 is much better, you can play all xbox games and all Ps5's exclusives. Thanks Phil.
From day one it was clear they wanted to become Netflix in terms of being everywhere, if they could put gamepass on playstation somehow they would stop making consoles tomorrow
No it wasn't, their messaging was the opposite at the time. They're not doing well so they to do what they're doing now.
It's because of the Ecosystem they have. It is actually a new thing in terms of gaming. Only Valve are competing with what they are doing.
The point is that the games arent the only things moving, but is the whole platform. My account, my progress, my Friends, my achivements, and even my purchased stuff.
This is the main objective here, they are Building that
Only problem is that while they can do that with almost no problems for PC, Smartphones, smart TV's, Quest ecc., on PS and Nintendo is way harder due to the closed systems, but is possible
Minecraft is the perfect example: i have it on Switch as well and there are Xbox achivements, the Xbox account, the Xbox Friends and even the dlcs move across the consoles.
Sure but it’s more about the ecosystem that they are making and also by still providing hardware while having there games on multiple devices
Hope they make more focus to play anywhere, that's what makes or breaks the fact of buying a game I want on PC but some times wanna play on Xbox
Phenomenal interview. Much salaute and reapect to you guys and thank you for constantly motivating us to focus on making great content.
I think Xbox is going to have a hard time moving consoles with the strategy next generation. I like Game Pass but there are a lot of people on the platform that don’t use it. Unless the next Xbox is truly special, a lot of people are probably gonna jump ship.
Which is better ps5 pro or Xbox series x
You’re absolutely right! Just spot on!

100% agree. So many of my older XB games don't cross save and are not play anywhere
Yes, but their first party games, majority of them are cross save, cross progression, cross buy. It's mostly only some of the older ABK games and Bethesda's online games because of the ever issues to allow them to be cross progression. Every new Xbox first party title is play anywhere.

Nice one with the Xbox os question the way Phil answered pretty much confirms they are actively working on it.
Oh yea I think they even mentioned it a couple weeks ago that they are actively working on making the pc Xbox experience better. I also think they are primarily doing it for the handheld which I’m super pumped about
A win for Xbox, a win for Playstation and their user base. Only things thats missing is what are xbox users getting out of this?
We get to play anywhere and get games on gamepass
How come Danny only has 4.7k subscribers? Did they got erased
Cause no one cares
@@jorgeacosta6698how is it going to kill Xbox when they’re offering the best deal in the console space?
This is xbox 🤣 This brand officially ceased to exist
I’ll be there day one for the next Xbox. You know why? They actually try. They boost your existing library, they give you value for you money and most of all they are dropping banger after banger with no end in sight.
They made the decision to wind down the Xbox platform long ago. They're just lying about it.
@@TheBean87 what value are you getting when your games are all going to your competitors? hell the PS5 Pro is gonna run Xbox games better than Microsoft's own consoles lmfao
@@untamedronin8339 How many times do we need to go through this ?? It's exhausting the lack of understanding. The value of being in the ecosystem are the benefits and features. If none of that interests you then I'd have a hard time believing you were ever an Xbox fan.

Is it just me or is there a lot of editing? Or is yt just being yt again
Phil Spencer is the light of the World
No kidding. Brought up Pong on Atari and has enough vision to get gaming out of the dumps. This man deserves a statue (of him with a gaming handheld).
This is just sad. The platform is dying and no one cares
Why can none ask the straight question will xbox have any exclusives going forward
Soft ball interview but not entirely useless. Microsoft will not bet on Xbox alone and needs to be a third party publisher.
They've destroyed the reason to get their software from them this generation. I suspect they'll destroy any reason to get their hardware in the next generation.
