Thank you although I’m not so sure about the young man bit. 👴 It was a great session and entirely unexpected. But that’s fishing, you just never know what the next cast will bring and I think that’s why we all do it.

Well done Bob, one chub in a session is good but four is absolutely brilliant👍

Thanks Alan. One chub was all I was hoping for so, as you can imagine, I was more than pleased.

Hi Bob Garlic sausage from Nisa is very good & comes in a Red plastic skin so you can cut into cubes/cylinders the size you want. I also Dredge my Luncheon Meat in "Chinese 5 Spice" powder. The Commercial Carp and Chub/Barbel Love it, and can be "A Fish a Chuck". For the meat/garlic sausage cylinders I use a felt tip pen cap, saw the end off, you can then "Blow Out" 3 or 4 at a time.

Hi, some interesting ideas. I think in a commercial there is perhaps the need to use something special to attract the fish given that they’ve probably got plenty of choice, with other anglers all doing their best to offer the most appealing meal! Rivers, on the other hand, are more lightly fished (although I think that might be changing) and I believe it’s more a question of finding the fish, not spooking them, and presenting the bait as naturally as possible. This is particularly true in small streams. That said, I don’t think the choice of bait is as important, especially in the case of chub as they will eat almost anything. Each of the chub I caught took plain bread flake within a very short time of casting.

Good session sir. I've mentioned before, a long time ago, that I was struggling to avoid near bank snags and losing fish and tackle. My river has high banks and netting them can be difficult, so I bought a cheap17 foot rod on Ebay (and a very long net handle that cost three times the price). It helped a lot and also allowed me to sit further away from the edge out of sight. Unfortunately the long rods are designed for float fishing, so the tips tend to a bit stiff. Not great when the flow is down. After a few mishaps and repairs it became a shorter rod, maybe 14 feet, so I decided to sacrifice the top section of an old feeder rod and made it into a new top section for the long rod. It's back to 17 feet and works well with improved sensitivity and has swappable stiffness quiver tips. It's a real "Frankenstein" and can be tricky to manoeuvre through the undergrowth at times but I'm used to it now. Like most anglers. I love solving fishing problems in the shed.

Yes Dan, you did mention the long rod before. Unfortunately everything is a trade off. I edited out occasions where the rod caught a tree branch, requiring me to unpick the resulting snagging. And there were a couple of spots I passed by where a very short rod would have done the job. To be honest, I don’t think I would get on with a 17’ rod although I appreciate the points you have made. I have in the past, where the situation allowed it, stayed well back and just projected the top couple of feet of my 12’ rod over the edge of the bank with some success. It needs the right swim and also involves getting down on hands and knees, something I’m far less adept at these days. It’s the getting up again that’s a challenge! As a final thought, I don’t think even a 17’ rod would have got that chub out of that reed raft, but who knows?

You're right, it took a bit of getting used to. The 4 metre landing net would have helped you. It's saved my bacon many times.

@ I went twice last week for a few hours on a small club lake near us had a few Carp to 8lb. Was going tomorrow but the weather doesn’t seem to be that good

Amazing how the perceived wisdom once was that carp were a summer fish and not worth fishing for at other times of the year. I think it’s going to be a bit chilly to sit by a lake this week so if I go out at all it’ll probably be another roving session to keep the blood flowing.
