Oh man. The Tilley lamp was one of the best things about going night beach fishing with my Dad at Seaford. What i'd give to have just one more of those nights.
I will second that exact comment my dad would heat up little mince pies on the lamp 😊 unfortunately he died when I was 15 I'm 44 now and I often wish I could have one last night fishing
Great video Graeme! Thank you very much for your time and effort. I love watching those beach fishing videos. They’re so enjoyable and make me want to get out, fish and light a fire! 🔥 I wish you all the best of luck on catching that cod - you deserve it! A big one is coming for you soon! 🤞🏼
Shared this video to my teenage boys as it's got more than fishing. Arrow heads stuck in faces and massive saws! Much better than the stuff they watch. Cheers Graeme
We used to use our Tilly lamp for night fishing on the old carp ponds (in the days before commercials). The hiss of the Tilly lamp on a warm summer night is one of the most nostalgic fishing sounds.
My Dad used to read all of Mr Pullen's articles when I was a kid, and yes, that hissss of the tilly light at night... Dad bringing in the fish and us kids watching, stars in the sky, the sound of the waves crashing... great memories. Great video!
Love your passion m8 I’ve got exactly the same till in my shed not been lit for well over 20 years you might have just inspired me to try & get it lit we used to warm up large pebbles then put them in our pockets for hand warmers
We always watch your vids. Subscribed. Keep the vids coming. I mentioned about the tilley lamps in one of our vids too. Remember those days they were all lit up.
I was out last night again on the beach, howling wind but still caught. Not an angler in sight.Hardly surprising , 50 years ago a Friday night would see a line of twinkling Tilley lamps along the beach front, regardless of weather.
@@TAFishing I can remember when I first started finishing Dungerness, it would be shoulder to shoulder over the weekend, especially when the ciod were in. wasn't it a pain when you got there and found you mantel was broke in your Tilley lamp. I've been watching yours and Mike's videos since you started. What I love is the way you keep things simple with your fishing. So many people try to over complicate. I'll wait for the next video. We've got about 8-9 videos. Just started really, but main channel is for woodturning, which has over 500 videos.
What a cracking nights fishing Grahem and not a pin whiting in site. As always a cracking video. Love the history lesson at the end. Still the best channel on you tube.
I’ve got another one of my bad ideas, and after watching some of your videos, I’m hoping that both father and son can make it even better. After watching your video about building a boat, the next big video both of you can produce in the future for someone like me who has yet to make it across the pond to the, “land of my ancestors” and have you sign a few copies of the books you’ve written over the years (like Fishing For Trout, etc) is for both father and son to make a couple of coracles together and take them out on the water for fly fishing. Think about it, because EVERYONE will watch this as it will be one of your finest videos ever made. 😇
Splendid session given how tough it is around our shores these days! Well done. I remember seeing a similar "old doctor" at Dover Castle when my sons were young, they loved it while the wife nearly feinted lol!
@TAFishing sadly no, we've lost so much over the years. I understand progress, but there's lot's of items and how we used to do things that should have been kept going. Keep the vids coming Graeme, Dave.
We used to use a tin can split down the middle and the top and bottom cut off. You can then fashion it into place on your lantern so the light reflects only one way and doesn't blind you. Keep it in your bivvy to keep nice and warm. I've got another that runs on gas and is lovely in warm in the winter nights
Hi graham you ok pal. We love ya beach vids up here. Well done on your session, you was due one. You took me bk in time with the old anchor lamp. They was brilliant. I also had a red Tilley and a gold Tilley lamp aswell. We used to put tin foil on the back of glass to make it brighter. Or iff ya was posh you had a piece of fabricated metal lol. The anchor lamp was loads brighter. Like you said you could warm ya hands or cook a pie on the top lol. All the best graham from GRIMSBY
All good here thanks, I did in fact make up a metal back plate so when it was up on a pole I could stand behind it and not have the glare in my eyes. I might dig out the Shepherd's crook stand and make a back plate from some tinfoil to show how it used to woerk.
That brought back some memories Graeme with the lamp, if I remember rightly there’s a small screw that you can use to adjust the light with, you can still buy some spares on you know where 🎣 🐟
@TAFishing still have mine and working but haven't used it for fishing for a long time now, you can still get spares from a company known as The base camp.
I still use my coleman lantern after 20 plus years. Be great to see a video about them, various types and modifications anglers use to make to them, reflectors, carry cases etc
Hi graham Great to see you fishing again on hayling island beach again.i used to fish there a lot about 6 years ago through various seasons dune ok can be a great place to fish as you know your self Sir graham 😊 you are legend amungst the fishing fraternity SIR 😅😊
When I started fishing back in the 1960's , I eventually got a Tilley Lamp from an army surplus store , used it for years lit the same way as yours with metherlated spirit few pumps and off it went , had this fine wire pricker that was used to clean the very small hole where the paraffin came through , was also good for warming the hands on cold nights
Hayling, the only plaice ( see what I did there) I have caught a cod from the beach and was way back in the 80's I also had one of those lamps back in the day and if memory serves you could get petrol fuelled ones. I haven't fished for years but still remember the days of easily catching ten or more flounders on a cold January or February morning in Langstone harbour on the Portsmouth side.
I used a Tilly lamp for years then went over to a Northlight. The latter ran on petrol and was very easy to light. I still have both in the garage although it's been many years since they've been fired up. I need to get them back in service for when Milliband gets his power rationing up and running.......
Hi Graeme tried to reply earlier something. went wrong.Anyway best fishing channel ever. It’s really great you are using a pressure lamp.Over the years I have used Tilly/Anchor and Coleman.I now own only two lamps both in regular use a Coleman Duel Fuel that I run on Coleman Fuel and a Hipolito 500cp.These two have been very reliable.Yes you do need a certain leaning curve in how to use and maintain them. The Hipolito in particular is great for beach fishing in the winter giving out a lot of light and heat. The Coleman in my opinion is better on summer nights when fishing into the early hours and is also a bit less weight and lights a bit easier.Less of my lamp fetish Graeme I have been watching your content from the the early days and I have to say it still as good as ever.Well done👍
Run your Coleman on panel wipe from a decent car parts shop it's pure naptha and 5ltrs is about £20 much cheaper than colemans fuel, Holts brake cleaner works as well if you Google it there's lots of info what works well with them
I think a main static camera and a pov action camera, would be good for filming this type of fishing. Maybe Mikes got a spare gopro knocking around lol.
Another useful thing about the Tilley lamp. You can warm your hands up. Many a time I've been glad to warm my hands on a cold night fishing trip. I still have mine after 40 years. But it needs a repair. Need to do some soldering, as it's loosing pressure by the pressure gauge.😢
Graham, it was wonderful to see this session and how successful you were. i am 69 pushing 70 and recently retired in hampshire. Intending to fish the beach this winter. Live closest to Stokes Bay. Any recommendation on where to do a night session? Cheers, Ross
No idea,I live 50 odd miles from the sea !!! I only fish where I do because I won't pay the ridiculous council car park prices which years ago used to be free in the winter months. I looked when I was there last week...£11-00 for a day ?/...No thanks, not for me. That's another bit towards the ragworm bait...Best to ask in the local tackle shops to see where is fishing best.Good luck with it though.
I have more mashups to come so I think I will start to drop them into the fishing films now.No fishing this weekend with the storm but I'm looking at Tuesday to try and get out after the big stir up.
here in the states I used to use a light like that to do chores ...milk the cow feed the pigs and such .. I had a Coleman light and it was so much better than whatever was in second place that I never bothered with anything else ...Coleman was a popular brand of outdoor gear and they popularized that type of light back then
I like a rechargeable LED camping lantern when fishing at night as well as a head torch. Set to warm white it's a great area glow around the shelter rather than the tunnel focus of a head torch. They're not expensive either, "LE Camping Light Rechargeable" from that very well known South American river store can be had for around £20 and it'll last all night on a charge.
Woohoo another beach fishing one went to chesil two weeks ago between me and my nephew all we got was bream and we lost count on how many we caught but it was a good day tho.
We used to put elastic bands on the breakaway leads if we needed them to hold better, it seemed to work, on the subject of Tilley Lamps at least you could keep your hands warm when using them….
Yes,we have different size limits for many species . If you catch the right sized fish then its often taken for eating. I very rarely keep anything for eating ,unless its a sizeable Plaice which for me is a one way ticket to the frying pan.

If you don't get them out far enough the waves just wash them straight back in and that's a waste. There is a method used in the States and I believe Canada when they drops huge weights of trout into lakes using a plane !!!....The impact of hitting the water makes them swim straight away. Same with a lot of foreign boat fishing where the fish are "speared" in to jet oxygen straight into the gills.

@StuartEast-ib8xx I hear you buddy. I hear you. All the very best to you.
Great to see an old Coleman lamp , we used to open a tin of beans and sausages and place it on the top to warm through
Fantastic Graeme !! Love your attitude 👍👍❤️
Graeme you a legend mate! 🔥 Love your videos and the commentary! Tight lines! 🎣👊
Great video Graeme! Thank you very much for your time and effort. I love watching those beach fishing videos. They’re so enjoyable and make me want to get out, fish and light a fire! 🔥
I wish you all the best of luck on catching that cod - you deserve it! A big one is coming for you soon! 🤞🏼
Hop over to Mike's channel T.A.Outdoors,he just put another beach catch and cook film up that we did last week. Something different to watch.
What a great nights fishing love the old lamp i used to use an old lantern like that .
Got yourself another subscriber Sir! Thanks for sharing!

Hardest working man! Great job, from the states. Thanks.
I actually enjoy physical work....its just the body that's starting to complain a bit...
Big love Graeme ✌️🥃
great vid
I appreciate all the effort you put into making your enjoyable films.
No problem, I try to mix the species and the topics up.
Excellent fishing session Graeme, I really must get my sea gear out and do some beach fishing for a change.
I still have a box full of spares for my old anchor lamps, the lamps are long gone though.
Youre vids are really good ,very informative and entertaining , thanks Graeme ,
nice to see you back on beach
Check out T.A. Outdoors,we just put another catch and cook beach film up on there.
I'm one of the old guys and remember those lamps well. Good to see you on the beach again. Dave Perry
Not many of us left who remember them nowadays.
@TAFishing sadly no, we've lost so much over the years. I understand progress, but there's lot's of items and how we used to do things that should have been kept going. Keep the vids coming Graeme, Dave.
Great and intrepid. I hope the fish get to grow larger and trawlers leave the tiddlers. Any hope?

Great session that Graeme. I had one of those Anchor Pressure lamps.. Cant think for the life of me where it is though.. 🤔
That brought back some memories Graeme with the lamp, if I remember rightly there’s a small screw that you can use to adjust the light with, you can still buy some spares on you know where 🎣 🐟
And I bet I know what’s on Mike’s Christmas list 😂😂
So miss my anchor light lovely heat during a winters night fish and would have a skillet on top to cook catch.
Maybe will start using a tiller again
Can't beat the comfort of a pressure lamp on a cold winter night on a beach.
@TAFishing still have mine and working but haven't used it for fishing for a long time now, you can still get spares from a company known as The base camp.
I still use my coleman lantern after 20 plus years. Be great to see a video about them, various types and modifications anglers use to make to them, reflectors, carry cases etc
Yes, I had a shepherd's crook pole made from reed bar and a back shield made from a piece of tin to direct the light onto the rods.
@TAFishing great to see a video on then 👍
Always liked your videos, top marks
Well done epic fishing session graeme
Nice one graeme just finnished reading tonys book how bloody interesting it was

A lot of the coleman lanterns and stoves run on petrol. Tilley did make a Flounder lamp but mainly for export and you would be very lucky to find one.
Nice 👍👍👍
We all had a Tilly lamp
Kept us warm
But burning that new mantle in was an art
But when you got it right it was perfect lighting
The mantles were always so fragile. Sort of material before burned, but when burned off they are delicate and break easily.
I used a Tilly lamp for years then went over to a Northlight. The latter ran on petrol and was very easy to light. I still have both in the garage although it's been many years since they've been fired up. I need to get them back in service for when Milliband gets his power rationing up and running.......
Ha !...Yes you have seen the spiral coming as well......won't be long before the price of candles will be going up.
Very good video man. The variety is good.
More mixed films to come,I will probably just add them onto the fishing films.

I remember the paraffin lamps and we had a paraffin cooker when we live in a croft in Scotland back in the day.
All good times bavk then, with less worries thats for sure.

I believe you can still pick them up.
@@TAFishing yes you can but usually running on propane which is in my opinion not as good as what we call white gasoline or in uk terms parifin
Very good fishing and the arrow removal very interesting 👍🏻 🎣
More weird and wacky clips to come...
That lamp was more like a mini lighthouse. Hope the ships offshore weren't confused.

I still have gripleads that take elastic banks. Ones I have molded myself.
Some one in kings lynn has a boat labelled totally awesome fishing sa.w colours as yours, have u sold it to someone this way
Yes I believe that is the man that purchased it.
i used to get my spares from maidstone angling center in kent
seaford beach used to be the same , lights all along the beach during saturday night
Just don't seem to see the lanterns today. Its all headlights or those red and green rod tip lights
I like this first time watcher. But a question does he put them back??
Yes,we have different size limits for many species . If you catch the right sized fish then its often taken for eating. I very rarely keep anything for eating ,unless its a sizeable Plaice which for me is a one way ticket to the frying pan.
Are you going squid fishing this year at Weymouth love those videos.
We were going but apparently they have opened some gates or something ??..I guess it colours the water ? Check with te local tackle shop.
Have a word with your sponsors Graeme and get them to send you some thermal clothing.
Or write a letter to Santa 🎅🏻 and ask him for some 👍
Makes me cold just watching you 🥶
The sponsors are......just me !...that way I can do whatever I want filming different topics. But not a bad idea to tag something onto the Christmas list.
When are you going back out after the great whites
Its the Sandtooth Tiger sharks that need to be worried...the other sharks are safe as I sold my boat . Must only be a matter of time before one of those Tigers will be caught by maybe even a shore angler ??...
I'd be telling that bloke to leave the arrow where it is, I'll survive with it left where it is pal.
Do big cod eat dog fish ?
The dogfish speciality rod never caught on...
I would be tempted to cut one of those bass in half and throw it out like in the Carolina’s 😊
Cool fishing man! I wanna run the trac-hoe with the claw on it !
Don't we all...Looks a bit safer than pushing the wood through the sawmill. But the grain on the wood is great.
i love your channel but what i hate is the way you put the dogfish or any small sea fish back into the sea , you just throw them as hard as you can, you would never do that is it was a small roach or perch, come on buddy thats not right, what sort of example is that setting, i sea fish all the time and just put them back gently into the surf
Love your videos but do you have to throw the dog fish back by there tail ? 😡
We used to fish by gas light. I agree that its more comforting than a head torch or any led. It created a much better atmosphere. Something between a a fire and a light. Or a bit of both.
Thanks for sharing this video 'G' 🫶👍
