By far the most animalistic, terrifying and deadly portrayal of the hunter. And an acknowledgment of its role as a strider bodyguard. Also a good portrayal of a less experienced militia cell.
Definitely one of the more underused parts of HL2 is the resistance. They could have been doing a lot more active things at the beginning of HL2, but as the protagonist, Freeman is the driving force behind them. Need people like ParryGod to make great use of the setting to create these small narratives.
@@pob_42 i always loved the rebels in hl2, its sad there arent more animations/machinima related to them
@@thanawinsaiwongpanya6947 yea sadly
it s like a predator , suited for forest engagements
@@pob_42 I think the resistance was just silently mapping routes, sabotaging combine logistics and recruiting members like the Viet Cong before Freeman's arrival
I like how the tank, one of humanities biggest examples of military technology, is reduced to a hiding spot due to how overwhelmingly superior the Combine is.
I always loved that aspect in Half Life, the contrast between two different worlds basically. What's even scarier to think about is the combines that are on Earth are basically just their version of "guards" simply watching over us. We have yet to see their true, real army.
@@vitalixy3578 Yeah the one that forced earth to kneel within 7 hours, so to speak.
I mean, the occupation force has no counters to a tank except a strider, which can be vaporised 4 kilometres away but yeah, their true military makes everything we have look like a joke.
@@Bangofsteam01 hey we lasted 7 hours against their full might right..? It wasn't just a scouting party that destroyed all our military right..? RIGHT..?
@@freeblade3110 "except a strider"
or a Crab Synth (which have a canon under its body), a Gunship (same beam thing as the Strider), a Combine chopper, a Mortar, even some AR2 orbs could do the job and probably more things we don't see in the Half-Life games
1:01 the strider calls it back, it would be cute if it weren't so terrifying.
naah still cute
Even sounds like the hunter is saying "On the way"
@@euphie2269 oHn mä Wæ
must've come under attack from another rebel pocket or gordon with a magnusson. that tone sounded like it took damage
it IS cute.
I've never really considered how scary flechettes are when you're not wearing a suit of super armor
That guy's brains probably got scrambled by the current as the fuze ran down...
It reminded me of that mech suit from District 9, shot a spike into a dude's skull and blew of his head.
Gordon is wearing the definition of plot armor
Yeah I mean, realistically humanity wouldn't even stand a chance if the Combine really happened. The Half Life games have happy endings, but we'd be like ants trying to fight off birds - birds who also had cybernetic armor and explosive laser eyes.
Same.
I like the detail at 1:01 where you hear the Strider calling back the Hunter to it's position.
You even see the Hunter's back antenna wag in response.
oh yeah!

I hadn't noticed that before, thanks!
Like an eager dog.

This is amazing! - so atmospheric and terrifying ... it's just left me wanting more. Subbed!
Wow one of my favourite SCP content creators commenting on my favourite Half Life animator's video, what a world
Hey volgun.
Holy crap! The one and only O-5!
Very epic!
His other animd are amazing
I love how you emphasize how scary the combine actually are. Unlike in a shooter setting were the hunters are just another enemy, this emphasizes that they are a specialist tool.
Also I love the weapon variety in your animations, when you see the resistance/anti-citizens they have normal human made weapons that are not uniform were the combine have alien made weapons that are uniformly issued. It's really a nice touch.
Out of curiosity theparrygod, did you use the RPG model here because there isn’t a high-res model of the hl2 rocket launcher?
That's because Combine issue weapons are protected with gene coded failsafes, although that's to say if Combine manufactured weapons being used by the Rebels and Freeman in HL2 and the Episodes was retconned with what was shown in Half-Life Alyx. But we'll have to wait until the next Half-Life game, won't we?
Yup, based SFM lad indeed
I honestly like that more than everybody just having the ar2 and mp7. I always found the fact that we never see weapons like M16s, akms, an sks or anything of that nature in the game
@@realreinjurings2761 It's been 20 years since the world ended, everything but maybe AK ammo will have completely run out. There is no weapons to use other than the ones the Combine produce ammo for.
I think my favorite part, horrifically, was the dude shot in the head. The look on his face wasn't generic or anything, it definitely looked like someone whose brain was firing all sorts of wrong as it tried to understand what trauma it just suffered. Not thrown off his feet unrealistically, not just a ragdoll fall. Just confusion and terror. And the exit wounds on the head were doubly impressive. Well done.
Yeah, death isn't pretty or as quick as people think it is. The human body and brain can fight through some pretty horrific wounds in a desperate bid for survival, even if it's futile. That rebels death was shockingly realistic.
I hope in one day we will see a full 1 hour movie about Half-Life in S2FM
This is amazing, lad
Amazing portrayal of the hunters. They stalk their prey, and like someone else said, they are strider bodyguards. This is the epitome of less is more.
Except when it comes to protecting Striders, there's usually more than one doing it, I believe it's described in EP2 as "being escorted by packs of Hunters"
@@cursedhawkins1305 yeah, agreed
@@pizzaman10203 Also even though we both can agree that it was stupid for the other rebel to stand up with the one that had the RPG, doing so also saved that rebel's life because they took the bullet that was going to hit them instead.
@@cursedhawkins1305 Yeah, those rebels were idiots thinking they could best a hunter.
@@pizzaman10203 Well they weren't focusing on the Hunter, the camera revealed the Strider for a reason, that was the target, the Hunter ambushed them.
god, that hunter jumping onto the tank and making it shake really shows how strong their jump is and how heavy they must be.
the beginning is brutal, love to see the hunters getting their justice
Props to gordon freeman surviving 150 flechette rounds to his head without a helmet
You just awoke my childhood fear of hunters. I remember having nightmares about them chasing me through the woods. The scariest part was that I'd think I'd out smart them, but they're smart and cunning, so I'd hide in a house or something, thinking they would just look for me else where like a normal animal, but they bust the doors down and look for me under beds and behind doors.
This is also extremely well done. Exceptional visuals.
Yeah dude I would also have had a nightmare of a hunter if my brain remembers what they are and I happen to be in the outskirts of city 17 in a dream
@@Zialt3 Get lost kid and go back to school 😑
Fantastic work!
@Anna ♪ Get a life.
I love how the more we expand on the half-life universe, it becomes like a modern take on the beta. It's still very much darker than the original game, but where the beta has this Orwellian dystopia focus on horror, and when we focus on the rebels it's these terrifying, hunt or be hunted game they're constantly playing with the world around them. I absolutely love the textures of the flora, the landscape, the weapons, the PEOPLE- This is why the half-life community is one of my favorite groups of creators.
What I like about half life 2 and alyx is that while they look beautiful, the story behind everything is very ugly.
It’s like the Star Wars universe. Shame there isn’t more content out for it
@@GojoGunning It's been ruined by mediocre writers. If ever its storyline is reimagined as something more dark, similar creators shall pounce upon it. I await that time eagerly, albeit unexpectantly.

That hunter has his priorities straight
Stridussy is calling
I always found the Hunters to be so freaking cool but in the games they are so weak, props to you to showing how gruesome they can really be.
"weak"
mostly annoying in-game
Weak?
Weak?????
It's mostly because Freeman is OP compared to the rest.
I always felt like the Hunter's Flechettes looked very weak on impact despite the two huge spikes, and all the damage came from their deflagration, finally they feel as dangerous as the should.
Well Gordon is wearing the hazard suit, they're not as dangerous to him.
@@SirKolass They are pretty weak on NPCs too though
While with such spikes they should deal a damage similar to the crossbow.
Of course they did it for gameplay reasons, but I think it's cool to see a realistic amount of damage in these videos.
I love that the Strider it's calling Hunters to rally back at the place where the Strider was, kool lore
something i really like with what you did to the camerawork is the fact that the camera travels smoothly with the hunter, showing that he's in a cold blooded and unreasonably calm state, while the camera showing the rebel travels roughly like its actually held by another person that is running alongside the rebel, showing how he's in a pure state of panic and stress. God i love your work
Synths are completely something else when you're not the great unstoppable Gordon Freeman, they get really terrifying.
I also never realized how big their flechettes were.

The Combine are probably the most interesting alien empire out there. I have this personal theory that, knowing earth is one of untold thousands they have taken, their real goal is to fight elder gods…. By using technology and empire to become elder gods.
That’s why the “G Man” seems to be an enemy of them. They’ve been looking for “him” for a long time. My theory is probably not anywhere near close, but I think its enough to make you wonder…
They won the war in 7 hours. If combine hunters are running rear security patrol, what do they have on the front lines?
I like to think that the "G Man" is a neutral guy who isn't particularly motivated by anything apart from satisfying his employers and gathering assets to complete his contracts (IE: Gordon Freeman), my longest theory is that one he takes contracts from various employers and one of them demanded control over Xen, and another demanded the killing of breen and the weakening of the combines grip on Earth, which is why when he started the resonance cascade (which could be another contract or part of the Xen contract) he quickly picked up on how Gordon was unnaturaly good at dealing with these sorts of situations and hired him.
Gordon was ALWAYS “hired.” In a way. Well he was a candidate since before the black mesa incident. And we can tell in HL2 that there is some negotiation across all parties, but from HL:A, we can tell the combine considers him, and probably his employers, enemies. He was imprisoned and the moment alyx released him he went ALL OVER the place. I think he was taking revenge on the combine.
But overall I get the impression that the G-Man’s employers are a single group. The combine just negotiates with them, like armies conducting diplomacy in warfare.
The difference is the combine are mortals that ascended to the level of the demi-godhood that the GMan already existed him. That’s why Breen liked them so much
@@youbaouahdi4358 I'm pretty sure he's part of the group by the way he talks about them.
@@Conservative4 People are theorizing that g-man and his employers' whole purpose is to keep the combine from getting the teleport technology, because they would get too powerful, and it all matches up. Since they knew exactly what g-man was and how to trap him, I'm pretty sure they're rivals out there. What the Combine did to imprison g-man seemed to me like just a temporary prison they quickly came up with, since they just grabbed an entire building and used vortigaunts to trap him. Imagine what they have outside earth.
@@SirKolass idk i always felt like G-Man let himself get captured on purpose by the combine, and the whole game is the G-Man's test to see if Alyx is qualified to be hired by the G-Man, kinda like Half Life 1 where he keeps an eye on Gordon and hires him for what he was capable of doing. I don't think someone as powerful as the G-Man is easily gonna get captured by the Combine forces on earth (I mean look at HL2 and how Gordon alone gives them a hard time), so he let himself get captured to see if Alyx is worth hiring.
I’d love to see an extended horror about surviving in the wilds in Half-Life, astounding animation.
Using a Lorn track for HL content is aces. His work has that special bit of otherworldly anxiety, and the hunters always sparked a bit of awe in me kind of like Lorn's music does. Fantastic work!
Always thought that the Hunter's first introduction was prime horror material, and you delivered that message very flawlessly
I love the way the Hunter looks like a dog wagging its tail at the call of its master when the Strider contacts it, telling it to return to guard duty. Terrifying, cute monsters they are.
0:34
Hunter: *Headshots one of the rebels*
Rebel: *Dies*
Hunter: "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (YEAH BABY")
Even just having a small editing role in this one was fantastic.
The soundscape turned out beautiful and menacing. The cinematography feels claustrophobic without being too close to feel what's going on. That poor sod is only alive because he wasn't worth the time.
Hunters have always been my favorite Half-Life enemy, from my first encounter with them. They're smart, faster than you, half way between a hunting dog and a movie monster, and have automatic grenade launchers on their face.
And now they're stalking the S2FM animation space as well...
(Tried commenting this yesterday, but the video was so popular right after release the comments broke for me XD)
Man, S2FM is looking gorgeous tbh
I’m just gonna say the gore in your animations is perfect. It’s not too over the top to the point weee it’s cartoonish, but not underwhelming either. It just has the perfect amount of shock value. Also everything from the music to the sound design to the camera is industry level and is way too good for UA-cam. Love your videos.
Edit: Also the animation is clean as hell. That hunter was animated perfectly.
It seems like the hunters fletchette cauterized the wound as soon as it exploded, hence why the stump where the head was supposed to be wasn’t gushing out blood as much
I have no words, God Tier animantion. Puts a teer in my watching someone create such master pieces of half life.
This puts a whole new light on the hunter, and it pretty unsettling to imagine running away from one of them, and the atmosphere is absolutely terrifying compared to the shooter where they are just your typical enemy. All in all, expertly crafted animation!
Them seeing the tripod come through the trees literally felt like I was right next to them.
If there’s one thing you do best, it is the immersion aspect of these videos.
I think this is one of your best shorts! I love how the forest looks. Its stunningly beautiful

I love the atmosphere, the sound effects and the soundtrack all of it is so perfect. Terrifyingly perfect, I’m not sure if you were going for a Russian vibe with it but the forest and such all comes across as if it’s in the urals and the old defunct T-55 you had the character hide under perfectly sells that fact. In my mind anyway. Insanely well done man, keep it up!
Well, I rather call that a "Bulgarian vibe"
I love this. Excellent portrayal of the rebels, the hunter, and the way the two react to each other, and the tactics from both sides are clearly and easily read.
The beeps before its vocalizations are kinda like the beeps that happen when overwatch soldiers speak into their comms, which just goes to show how simmilar they are at their core, they might look different and be from different species but at the end of the day their both creatures that have been made equally usefull to the Combine.

Always wanted to see the actual damage a Hunter’s flechette could cause- absolutely brutal. Fantastic portrayal as always!
Was praying that the other rebel would survive. Amazing work at setting up so much tension in only a minute and eighteen seconds!
A CHARACTER SURVIVING IN A PARRY VIDEO?!?!
Right? I'm just as surprised as you are.
This is SO amazing! I really loved the slavik facial featurures you gave to the humans.

Absolutely love the transitions between the shots of the dude strafing with the rock in shot with the hunter subsequently doing the same thing, terrific cinematic vision. Your work is a sensation.
Awesome sauce as always, the hunters were always a favourite of mine for being one of the more unique combine enemies you actually get to fight. Plus you really brought home the point of calling it a Hunter, loved all the life you put into it and the animation and its atmosphere in general.
This is incredible! Perfect animation! And the scale of the forest is insane!
The atmosphere and overall look is simply next level, man. Love it!
the hunter is such a terrifying & well-designed enemy. I love how it even looked like it was having fun when it was on the tank & the only reason the guy lived was because the strider called it back. It knew exactly where he was
I don’t know why but the hunters are so CUTE 😭😭😭
I've always love syntets, especially hunters. They're like striders, but smaller. Fast, agile, have cool weapon and look, sounds scary, pretty tanky too. It must be horrifying to face with even one of them when you just a regular rebel without cool powerarmor, arsenal of weapons and gravity gun.
You cant kill them fast - they too armored. You cant run from them on foot - they way more mobile. You even cant rely on your bodyarmore, if you have one - they darts are explosive and hurt you even if dont penetrate. You only have some chanses if you have an AR2 with energy ball, or engage at long range, open fire first and pray that you have enough firepower to kill a hunter before it was close enough for accurate dart shot. Or you can hide and maybe it won't look for you carefully.
I just recently replayed HL2 episode 2, this was such good timing! I absolutely love how you potrayed the realism and unique behaviours of the hunter here, another god tier short!
The Hunters are my favorite enemy in the game. It's so cool to see them get recognized in their own short. I'm surprised how little recognition they get.
the sounds just wow, looking forward to the future, top quality shizzle
I'm glad to see killzone shadow fall ost getting some proper use and attention
It's sad how many tracks in many video game ost's get lost to time or under utilized or appreciated
Good show.
I really liked to see nature done in S2, we usually mostly see industrial environements so that gives us a real breath of fresh air !
Dude, the effort and work u put in these animations are just speechless! Between the audio and the prefect cinematic cutseens, u always amaze us!!
Imaginary scenes like this one really makes me wish for a Half-Life universe realistic multiplayer military horror shooter game, or as a mod for Squad.
I pray to God Valve sees one of your videos to realize the potential this franchise has, not only in gaming, but filmography as well. This felt like an episode from Love Death Robots. Keep on going, brother.
I really like that the guy with the rocket launcher ,closes his eyes before aiming at the strider. It's like he's thinking about what he is about to do and what will happen if something goes wrong. 0:24
That hunter "wolf howl" was frightening! Beautiful work as always!
These are so damn good!
It seems like enemies are treated like paper tigers in games.
"THESE guys conquered the planet in 8 hours?"
Parrygod's videos show how scary it would be to face this stuff.
Great work!
Watched every S2FM animation you made. And every single time I was amazed at your skill
This is some horror movie [__] right here, absolutely great.
That was absolutely brutal and shocking. Hunters seriously are some of the most terrifying combine forces there are in my opinion. They seem like such a streamlined predator.
So this is why Gordon is hailed as a Messiah in the Half Life world.. he fought enemies no normal humans could kill alone and more. And during action, just imagine Gordon taking his enemies down like the Gunships and Hunters, Combine, etc
You honestly makes the best films man, i watch every single one of them multiple times and gets nice event ideas for my Half-Life 2 Roleplay server
This looks amazing! Really cool to see the hunter in source 2 as well
This animation shows how the hunters can be terrifying.
Yeah they aren't so weak when you're not wearing a protective suit when you're just a rebel.
The hunter sounds are just the best
Suprising how much action and suspense you can pack into a single minute, very impressive.
Yeah, holy shit, that's terrifying.
Well done!
I don't know what it is about these videos you make but they are so immersive, it really makes me feel like I'm there, the intensity is felt. If there was a Half Life movie to be made this guy is the one to do it.
How is Valve not hiring you to make this a series?
Your work is amazing, you are giving life to this universe.
i like in your vids how realistic you are, like for example you had that guy die from one shot where half life treats the rebels as if they have a thin hev suit underneath their clothing

Outstanding animation like always, short but sweet.
I always found the hunters to be neat enemies to fight in episode 2. it's kinda interesting that Hunters are somewhat sadistic in that they can sometimes be heard making a kind of "laughing" noise when the player is at low health.
They have a very childish, animalistic vibe to them, like they were given the personality of domesticated dogs.
@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639 Their behavior feels more akin to a dolphin, brutal, playful, and social, but still very intelligent.
Actually they are not eyes, they are the things where flechettes shoot out from 🤓☝️ but seriously though impressive work once again keep it up
'blue eyes' was what Marc Laidlaw originally wanted to call the hunters, hence the title, haha. And thank you!
@@TheParryGod Oh alright another half life fact to know
They can do both. The strider's ball socket gun looks around so I think they can use their guns as secondary eyes only used for aiming and firing.
That's just my thoughts tho
As Jack Daniels pointed out, they "look" around with those like a chameleon, so they probably do both.
That or it's like pointing your gun around a room.
These hunters can't even compare to the chad that is the Half life 2: Episode 2 radio operator

Your short animations are all the interesting, and entertaining. Everything is refined to the last detail, the animations of each character, their look, scenery it looks so realistic. Keep doing great job!!!
Very well done, atmosphere, animation, sound design. And as always cinematic!
Love every sfm you've made so far, this is true quality right here and i hope the algorithm sniffs you out soon so this can get the wider audience it deserves.
Just noticed on a rewatch - but I love how everything goes south because of the birds flying away. The fact you had a cohesive reasoning behind how the strider found its target is just brilliant. Also doesn't help that the dude stood up but him taking the hit probably saved his buddy from eating it instead. Great work brother, your short films are an inspiration
Your videos add so much flavour to the world of HL2, the combine has always been one of my favourite aspects of the lore and you show them in a terrifying new light.
Seeing an arrow go through his head while he’s still alive and seeing it explode was honestly horrifying.
Good work man 👍
I felt the hunter's fear properly
0:38 Hunters are kinda like vicious dogs.
Jesus Christ the way his head just exploded is utterly horrifying
I love the detail that there is an abandoned T-55, I mean, Valve never told us where exactly was City 17, just that was on an "eastern Europe country", and since the combine invasion took place in the early 2000, a lot of T-55s were still in service in a lot of ex-communist states, and the fact that it's a T-55 and not a T-62 or something else states that this guy paid attention at everything, becouse the Soviet Union sold vastly the T-55 and not the T-62 or T-72 (at least in the generic eastern European country such as some of the balkans, Bulgaria ajd Hungay or Moldova [Romania not included becouse they wanted to made theyr own T-55]). This is just amazing
They need to get this guy onto making an animated Half Life tv show, come onnnn Valve!!!!!
i genuienly had to remind myself this is all animated through the video because it just looks so damn realistic, 100/10
I have always found hunters terrifying. It’s something about the heavy, rhythmic footsteps, the way they screech and scream while chasing you, and their sheer size; all these things combine (no pun intended) to create a sense of primal fight-or-flight horror that I haven’t got from anything else, other than the gonarch in black mesa and the ancient antlion guardian.
