Absolutely. Also think about how the drivers of those days experienced multiple engine configurations. For example in 10 years, Senna drove every imaginable popular engine configuration used in Formula 1...from the Toleman with a Hart inline-four, V6 turbo from 1985-1988, normally aspirated V10 in 1989 and '90, to the V12 in '91 and '92, and then for one year, the V8 Cosworth in '93. There were only 11 races on that circuit... but some are legendary... I still can remember 1995 when Damon Hill finished 2 laps ahead of Olivier Panis ... and Mika Hakkinen had a heavy crash that weekend ... not to forget Glen Dix, who bowed to every driver with the chequered flag
I went to every race for the four days as an Adelaide resident not to mention the partying. 95 the finale was huge with bon jovi as the after race concert. I wish I could do it all over again. I have a fantastic photo collection from the times though.
The 1992 season is one of the last gasps for the golden F1 era I grew up watching. Two years on from this race you have Michael Schumacher just beating Damon Hill to win his first world title, with Mansell winning his last race. Senna and James Hunt would both be gone and Prost retired.
It was a weak season. That Williams had a ridiculous advantage. Best ever car in F1. Sometimes 3 seconds a lap quicker in qualifying. Some of the greatest drivers in f1, but we didn't get the chance to see this.
Almost like watching a different sport to todays F1. That's no disrespect to LH at all, but more an indictment on the strength in depth and the changes that have been made. These guys seemed fearless.

he kinda was. On one hand he was a brilliant driver, but he was sometimes also dumb as a rock. There was one time in canada (dont know the year) where he was far a head and he was driving slowly on his last lap and waving to the crowd. But then he drove a little too slow and the engine stalled, resulting in a dnf instead of a win.
I was more impressed with the fact that both Senna and Schumacher were able to stalk the back of both Williams considering the pace differences of both the cars. Only Michael's second season in F1 and first full year. Shows how great those two drivers were.
Even better than the battle on track has to be Murray Walker’s commentary. I had forgotten just how entertaining it made the racing (even at times when not much was going on). “Down the straight, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th, 5th to 6th up to 310kph” No one can replace him, such a passion for the sport!
Mansell & Senna were the nuts, pure racers. No braver drivers than Mansell, he was so unlucky over the years as well. He would of won more championships for sure had he had better luck. Senna was simply sublime.
Mclaren, Williams and Lotus. The 90s was a sad period for Grand Prix racing, as it saw Lotus fall. And Brabham. In this race, Lotus was still the second most Successful team ever, that was still true as they began their final race in 94.
Adelaide was amazing. Check out Clive James's piece when he went in '95. When F1 came to town the place was just one big party. Track wasn't bad either. Also, these cars look and sound just... mwah!
Mansell was so under rated I loved his grit, hard work and how he'd make a race exciting. This along with many other drives is why I think he is up there in top 10 of greatest drivers.
The BBC commentary was so partisan! Mansell brake tested Senna. You see Senna's cars rear end step out in his attempt to avoid hitting Mansell and the British commentators lay the blame squarely on Senna! Check out the earlier laps. Mansell brakes much sooner at that turn than any time earlier catching Senna by surprise and causing the collision.
The partisan UA-cam crowd, break testing was part and parcel of the sport back then. Dont you dare pretend that Senna didn't do that himself (or indeed just ram into people deliberately). No offence, but iim guessing you arent old enough to have watched these races/ years live. Trust me, much was allowed back then, and accpected
Fanboys comparing apples with oranges to defend their favourite driver as usual. Anyways, I don’t recall Senna being called ‘Torpedo’ or ‘Spin master’ back in the day. He was ruthless on track and made mistakes as well, but he never got outclassed by his team mate just like all time greats!
The commentary is off from the pictures, there are a few examples but the biggest is at 3:03 Murray Walker saying the drivers of cars 5 (MAN) and 1 (SEN) are at 'Stag Turn' (turn 9) when they're actually approaching 'Racetrack Hairpin' (turn 15). These videos are brilliant - thank you! :) - but would be great if you could properly sync the sound too.
Murray Walker, just as much a legend as the drivers. No commentator comes close. His ability to put the viewer into the cockpit of a car, with his wonderful vocal image painting, was really quite something.

Agreed.. Doubt that any of them wanted to miss the championship points. When you look at the previous few laps, and where the braking point is. It would come to anyone's surprise, that he would brake there. Probably a sneaky move, to make Senna's corner exit slower, by making him brake more than normally needed... but as mentioned Senna was right behind and they both payed the price.
@@shoppingcart2589 give over, it was a Senna mistake, why would Mansell brake early? He was in the lead, it was not in his interests. Senna was a great driver but this accident was about his frustration.,
This race sums up Senna to a tee. His brilliance was what kept him staying with Mansell in an inferior car. But then after seeing he wasnt ever going to pass, he deliberately rammed Mansell off the road in frustration. He was a flawed genius.
I've always thought that there was something off with the way Nigel positioned the car and also how he braked into the corner. From my point of view Ayrton was surprised and caught by surprise.
Not really. If you recall I think there was a similar situation lap two where Senna got by but was immediately retaken as he couldn't hold on to the corner. I think Senna was trying too hard to overcome the performance gap of the cars and while Mansell was being smoother for the turn and braking with more than enough time so probably a but early Senna was going to try late and being behind Mansell he was caught out but he was never in the place to try that out braking as Mansell was in middle of the track and Senna wasn't either side so he shouldn't have tried it.
My opinion is similar to yours. It's a combination of factors. Mansel is in the middle of the track. As Senna comes to the limit, he expects Mansel to define a different tangency trajectory. So surprised he takes microseconds to define what to do. he brakes hard and the car goes sideways, but he doesn't avoid the accident.
At the time they thought it was Mansell's last race. In the end it was the last Senna/Mansell battle. Considering their wild history on track it was quite fitting it ended on a contact.

I know V12 and V10 sounds impossible for this era but still, it will be interesting to see different team using different engine config. For example, Ferrari use V6turbo hybrid, Mercedes using V4turbo hybrid or mabye diesel engine could be race as well. I like to see when the engineer is given freedom to make their car, basically like LMP1
I enjoyed watching F1 much more back then than today. Patrick Head at Williams, who worked with all three, said there was nothing between Mansell, Prost and Senna as far as speed and skill.
"The titans are fighting".
1:57 ~ When the year is 1992 and the cars are giving off wingtip vortices like a fighter jet, you know you are witnessing the Absolute Edge of what humans could accomplish on the ground at the time... I bet that would also be close to what we have today as well. . . Speed wise and Absolutely Human Passion Wise.
Adelaide circuit is still in my heart. The first Australian Grand Prix I ever watched was Adelaide 1995. I have always thought that circuit was more special then Melbourne.
The old Adelaide circuit and the legendary drivers... perfect.
The Williams engine sounds glorious, McLaren engine sounds epic, the battle between Senna and Mansell is brilliant, anything else to add?
yes that Senna acts drity as he was.

The Mansell, Piquet, Prost, Senna... Was a great era of F1.
Schumacher and hakkinen also in this race. Next gen world champions
It’s so awesome seeing these air vortices coming of the rear wing on the straights
Almost like watching a different sport to todays F1. That's no disrespect to LH at all, but more an indictment on the strength in depth and the changes that have been made. These guys seemed fearless.
When Williams was the superior car!
I'm italian and ferrari fan. For me Williams always was a romantic team that deserves to return to fight for the victory. Sorry for my english
Lol
But MC laren the best driver : only genious Senna do meu Brasil...
They were pretty equal by the end of the year, McLaren always developed until the end of the season and williams didn't. Berger and Patrese were equal as well.
@@scarsurfing the Williams was head and shoulders above the Mclaren all season, Prost tested the 92 car and wanted to use that instead of the fw15c, but Patrick Head insisted on using the new car because its active system offered more potential than the reactive system on the 14b.
Prost has said in many interviews the 93 season was his most difficult and thought it would have been easier in the 92 car.
The Mclaren wasn't on level terms with Williams from mid 91 until 1998 when Williams lost the Renault engines.
The 91 Williams was better than the Mclaren but suffered with reliability issues in the first half of the season.
I well remember that race . Thanks to this accident, Schumacher finished third in the points. Sadly, these times of F1 will never come back.
Brazilian Broadcast: "It looks like Mansell strangely diminished the speed abruptly, the crash was unavoidable"

Mansell should of been a multiple WDC piquet called him a fast idiot ha!
Piquet wasn't wrong.
I like to say that Mansell was a crazy genious driver.
Should have*. Not "should of".
Piquet called Senna a Sao Paulo taxi driver. Piquet was the jealous type.
he kinda was.

To think there are some people who deny Michael is one of the greats!!!
@@mziwendukuntsele671 yeah. That's just envy and hate, so don't worry about it too much ;-)
Easy to see why. From mid 1992 FIA put new regulations on fuel. The Renault engine lost around 50bhp.
@@danigonzalez4299 Oh wow, I didn't know that. Cheers.
Even better than the battle on track has to be Murray Walker’s commentary. I had forgotten just how entertaining it made the racing (even at times when not much was going on).
“Down the straight, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th, 5th to 6th up to 310kph”
No one can replace him, such a passion for the sport!
I totally agree. And knowing how much a petrolhead he is, I am sure he knew the gears and speed by heart.
Mansell & Senna were the nuts, pure racers. No braver drivers than Mansell, he was so unlucky over the years as well. He would of won more championships for sure had he had better luck.
Senna was simply sublime.
When McLaren and Williams fighting for the victory. I miss this days...
Epic days...
Mclaren, Williams and Lotus.
The 90s was a sad period for Grand Prix racing, as it saw Lotus fall. And Brabham.
In this race, Lotus was still the second most Successful team ever, that was still true as they began their final race in 94.
Those cars do something to me I cant explain. They don't even give me chills but i got that feeling in my stomach...its nice haha.
Senna vs Mansell is a beautiful thing to watch, until something ends up going wrong 🤣
The golden era of F1
So much intense fight they ended up in a collision, by the way this 1992 Australia and Monaco Grand Prix is the most intense fight in that season.
Can we bring back tracks like this? We don't need more Abu Dhabi tracks.
Adelaide was amazing. Check out Clive James's piece when he went in '95. When F1 came to town the place was just one big party. Track wasn't bad either. Also, these cars look and sound just... mwah!
Man man man, I miss so much the early 90’s...
Mansell was so under rated I loved his grit, hard work and how he'd make a race exciting. This along with many other drives is why I think he is up there in top 10 of greatest drivers.
Agreed
I put him in the top 5
And here it is.... the ubiquitous UA-cam "underrated" comment being used by someone who has no idea what the word means.
@@ivanjulian2532 they use that word to get likes.. it's pathetic.
So smooth, I think he was a better driver than senna
Back when Australia had a proper great and fun race track in Adelaide.
Yes moving from Adelaide to Melbourne was one of the symbol of the trend of F1 changing and becoming Formula Woppsie/Parking
Despite the safety, for me these cars are more beautiful than nowadays..
Rest In Peace Ayrton …
3:32 thats Patrese and Berger. Not Mansell and Senna
Yes its not mansell and senna. But senna helmet is yellow like brazil
Murray was always a bit clueless.
This intensity reminds me of the 1979 Race of Champions which pitted Gilles Villeneuve against Mario Andretti. Another time, another world.
When Vettel Made a mistake like this, they call it „like a Amateur“
The problem with Seb is that he makes mistakes too often
Are you really trying to compare these uncontrolable, unpredictable and overpowered beasts with the cars we have today??
The audacity/ignorance
F1 is full of double standards these days.
What a lame comparison.

This was the last battle they ever had. Mansell was in indy cars from this point onwards until Ayrton's death :(
Murray Walker, just as much a legend as the drivers. No commentator comes close. His ability to put the viewer into the cockpit of a car, with his wonderful vocal image painting, was really quite something.

Back when F1 had 'soul'. Adelaide was AWESOME. Great era, great track.
Bad driving out of Senna in the end to rear end him like that. Golden era of F1 though. Great battle from the two legendary drivers!
Mansell braked extremely early and Senna was too close to do anything about it and couldnt save it,

@@shoppingcart2589 maybe, but however you look at it, it’s Senna’s mistake.
This race sums up Senna to a tee. His brilliance was what kept him staying with Mansell in an inferior car. But then after seeing he wasnt ever going to pass, he deliberately rammed Mansell off the road in frustration. He was a flawed genius.
When F1 stopped the world every Sunday morning … unforgettable 1980's years!
yeah.. except this was 1992.
I've always thought that there was something off with the way Nigel positioned the car and also how he braked into the corner. From my point of view Ayrton was surprised and caught by surprise.
Senna fault all day long
Você está totalmente correto. Mansell também pode ter errado uma marcha.
At the time they thought it was Mansell's last race. In the end it was the last Senna/Mansell battle. Considering their wild history on track it was quite fitting it ended on a contact.
This is basically verstappen every weekend trying to hang with the Mercedes 🤣
But he didnt crash into them.
Sorry but: He's a much more fair driver.
