Gollum IMO is the most sympathetic villain in literary history. Never had I hated and felt so sorry for anyone as I did that pathetic, sniveling murderer. To start out initially hating him to eventually having great sympathy for his pain and suffering that he did not ask for. When he falls into Mount Doom I was happy for him in that he would NEVER be free of the ring and it had forever twisted and changed him. Even with its destruction the rings effects would cause him great harm until his death. With death being the only true release from its black vile influence. So in that instant Gollum became Smeagol again. Free after so many hundreds of years to again feel the breeze and taste bread. Allowing the sun to again touch his face.
Andy Serkis has said that his interpretation of the line “Smeagol lied” on the slope of Mount Doom is that *Smeagol* was also plotting for the ring, *separately* from Gollum. Pretty sinister for your “good” split personality to be more subtly evil.
My feelings for Gollum really changed when I re-read the books and realized that Aragorn seemed to say that Gollum had been breaking into peoples houses and eating their infants. 😐😐

How is it possible. That this man. This technology. The whole Peter Jackson+Andy Serkis combo, is not praised as revolutionary. This is amazing. These 2 guys practically started a new era of cinema! They certainly deserve waaaaay more recognition and honor.
The best thing about Andy Serkis and his performances is that if you're a true fan of his work you can tell which character he's playing. The CGI might be incredible, but his talent shines through in such a way that no matter how much CGI is between him and the final product, it still has his very human element being the driving force.
Andy Serkis is a genius. This very special way of acting thru a mechanism, of making these layers of mechanical and electronic complexity transparent for his emotions is a very high end version of puppetry. I have been a puppeteer for more than 40 years, and I am grateful that people like Andy have taken this age old art to a new height that nobody could have imagined even a few decades ago. Nothing but admiration for him and yes I believe he should have gotten the oscar years ago.

Holy mother of Valar and Maiar and Ainur, this man is a genius and the cause of all the movies nowadays using this technology.
Think you're misunderstanding the uncanny valley, Gollum was made too far from an actual human to never induce that effect, the CG is nice, but isn't strong enough you believe it to be an actual real thing, the smart move with Gollum was keeping him more akin to a monstrous humanoid than an actual human. It's no lie that the amount of post work to make Gollum work was probably larger at the time than what Andy put into it. He is great, but let's not make this all about how one man made this work, he was a piece that several hands was utilized in a great way.
He is to Peter Jackson what Doug Jones is to Guillermo del Toro, I think ... They really did open the door to a totally new way of thinking of acting. In retrospect, the Oscar was greatly deserved just for that much less for the skill he showed in doing something so well with almost no role models for how to do it.
One of the things I really liked about this was listening to Serkis explain his "process," how he tried to envision the character and develop a voice based on his presumed mental state/physicality/etc without sounding like a pompous, high-handed twit who could scarcely be any more impressed with himself.. It seems to be a common trait among Brit actors, one which I enjoy a lot; they are serious about their craft, and typically very diligent and committed to doing it well. Here in America, successful actors seem to share those traits...but get them started talking about themselves, they start to sound as if they really think they are awesome, sent to Earth with talent on loan from God to make the world a better place, frequently throwing around phrases like "As an artist..." all that sort of thing. on the other hand: watch some respected, august, RADA-trained thespian like Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Richard Harris, Ian McKellen, et al, who cut their teeth doing Shakespeare at the Old Vic-- the kind of actors who could probably get a pass for sounding like a bit of a self-important stuffed shirt-- and they're very plain-spoken and self-effacing. I remember watching Ben Kingsley-- an actor I enjoy tremendously--talk about playing the role of Meyer Lansky in "Bugsy," how he prepared for the role and pursued it, and I remember him simply saying "I get to the set on time, I have my lines memorized, I stand where I'm told to stand, and I say the lines as they're meant to come out." That's it. Another time I was watching one of Alan Rickman's last interviews, and the interview cut away for a couple of minutes to a montage of various Hollywood big-shots and heavy hitters carrying on about what a stone-cold killer he was as an actor, how they were better actors for having worked with him, yadda, yadda, yadda. When asked about how he went about being such a great actor, he kinda smiled sheepishly and said it was "all about good script-writing." As he more or less put it: if the script is well-written, if the lines are good and the dialogue makes the character interesting, then all he had to do to deliver a good performance was say them properly.
I have watched War for the planet of the apes last night and I recognized his eyes without being able to actually remember his face. His acting is amazing. His confrontation with W.Harrelson is an incredibly good scene.
THE RING The whole story, as I understand it, was that Peter Jackson gave one ring to Elijah Wood and another to Andy Serkis, but for a long time each of them thought they had the only ring. Perfectly fitting in my estimation since each of their characters was, albeit for different reasons, obsessed with keeping the ring. In the end they both got it. Beautiful! Another thing - I thought that the closing credits of ROTK were the best I have ever seen in cinema: the artistically beautiful renderings of the characters, the outrageously beautiful song as sung by Annie Lenox ('Into The West') and most of all by the very very end - all of the writing is off the screen and a centered-on-the-screen picture of the ring was the last image of the credits which struck me immediately with the thought that much like the plane in 'Top Gun' the ring was the main character of the movie ... and fittingly takes the last bow.
What I found astonishing: When I saw Star Wars, The force Awakens, the scene with Supreme Leader Snoke: You could see Andy acting there. I hadn't read up on the cast, I didn't know Andy was playing the character, but it was obvious that Andy was under this animation.
so i just looked up that scene with gollum trying to stop the boys on mount doom, and it is an absolute credit to andys acting skill, the editing team, and their ability to work together to bring motion capture tech forward and use it to create an amazing trilogy, in a triple concurrent production schedule. btw, does anyone know exactly how that stuff is scheduled? how does that scene, of all things, randomly become the first thing they do? im dying to know the details behind that process. i find it endlessly fascinating overall but particularly with the LOTR franchise. that was an absolute tour de force as we all know.
Hes an absoulute master of motion and performance capture but id love to see him as himself a little more, hes a great actor with an awesome voice and personality, it would be cool to see that on screen as well as the performance capture
I am now wrapping up the Andy Serkis narration of the whole LOTR trilogy (also listened to his narration of the Silmarillion) and oh my lord, the amount of appreciation I have for this man knows no bounds now. My first time experiencing Tolkien’s works, I don’t don’t think I would have appreciated it as much if Andy didn’t narrate it, he did such an amazing amazing job 👏👏
The actor is amazing and brought a heck of a voice to bring a character to life and he’s not even a voice actor. But who in the heck was the one who thought to bring this guy to the table to be a voice of a character even though he’s nos a voice actor?? Talk about luck or prophecy lol. And then in the end a freakin cat was the inspiration. Go figure
He brought to life an ape and a monster through motion capture, and opened up a new form of filmmaking technology now known as motion capture. Andy Serkis is a legend.
poor Andy, he wrote an book , he played multiple roles like King Kong , Star Wars , Avengers ... and everyone who meets him : "YOU are Gollum, do the Gollum" !
Well that's an icon role same with Mark Hamill he has done other stuff but 89% of people will say LUKE SKYWALKER 10% will say JOKER !!!! and the rest think who the fuck is that old guy ?
I had a cat help me in something similar. My ex and I use to play World of Warcraft and I was laying awake one night in the dark trying to come up with the name of a new character I was creating, which sometimes is very difficult. As I was laying there thinking, my cat had wandered into the room and like Andy's cat, started to hack up a hair ball. Part of my brain wondered "how would you spell that sound?" So the creation of my Night Elf....Oobleck was born. Little did I know at the time that it's also the name of the mixture of equal amounts of cornstarch and water. It's still one of my favorite characters.
I love how he mentioned its the end of typecasting; cause ironically he actually HAS been typecast as a mo-cap actor ;p Brilliant guy btw. Love his work
Gollum haunts me like no other work of fiction. What's his fascination? He represents addiction, yes; he's a ring junky, but that doesn't quite encompass Gollum. Gollum is villain of all villains and the most sympathetic victim of all victims. He got the highest prize beyond anything anyone else could achieve, but it took everything from him, the friends he might have had, the loves he might have had, the children he might have had. It sucked every bit of joy out of his life but wouldn't even allow him to die. He had to live in agony forever.
I first discovered Serkis long before Lotr in a music video called woman sang by Neneh Cherry. It took me a while to remember him and make the connection between the characters but he really is a good actor.
AR will make us become anyone we want to, it's already is but it's just going to get better and better. It will encourage and make many non-actors want to act and make their own "little scenes" and "little movies".
@@MrParkerman6 And it would be lesser for it dumbass :D yes it would be made and it would still be good but Gollum is a key part of the story and Andy killed it 10000% perfect choice.

Hello gorgeous 🌹
Thanks for the beautiful comment, I'm really overwhelmed by your amazing words 🌻🤗🙏
I have watched War for the planet of the apes last night and I recognized his eyes without being able to actually remember his face. His acting is amazing. His confrontation with W.Harrelson is an incredibly good scene.
His cat helped create the most mimicked voice
THE RING
The whole story, as I understand it, was that Peter Jackson gave one ring to Elijah Wood and another to Andy Serkis, but for a long time each of them thought they had the only ring.
"ring junkie" 😂
Andy Serkis is a one of the kind actor who is unmatched
He is a likeable character and I enjoy watching his genius

He is so awesome! Puts his all into every character.
Very, very underrated actor. He's one of the all time best.
What I found astonishing: When I saw Star Wars, The force Awakens, the scene with Supreme Leader Snoke: You could see Andy acting there. I hadn't read up on the cast, I didn't know Andy was playing the character, but it was obvious that Andy was under this animation.
Andy Circus is a bloody legend watched him for years everything he does turns to gold!
It's a joy when he is not being interrupted
It's amazing how much work Andy puts into work just for an audition, not even the actual job.
He did the voice overs on a show I edited. He's a great actor and a nice guy. :)
To this day I love the King Kong remake and never knew Andy played him.
Josh B I didn’t know until he played Caesar. You could tell it was Andy when you saw Caesar’s face but couldn’t when you saw Kong
so i just looked up that scene with gollum trying to stop the boys on mount doom, and it is an absolute credit to andys acting skill, the editing team, and their ability to work together to bring motion capture tech forward and use it to create an amazing trilogy, in a triple concurrent production schedule. btw, does anyone know exactly how that stuff is scheduled? how does that scene, of all things, randomly become the first thing they do? im dying to know the details behind that process. i find it endlessly fascinating overall but particularly with the LOTR franchise. that was an absolute tour de force as we all know.
spectacularly under rated genius of an actor
Love it! Thank you Andy - you're one hell of a dude! :)
You can definitely see a perfect blend of Gollum and Caesar in his face.
He’s incredible
Hes an absoulute master of motion and performance capture but id love to see him as himself a little more, hes a great actor with an awesome voice and personality, it would be cool to see that on screen as well as the performance capture
He still should be given an Oscar
Only idiots care about award shows. Award shows don't fucking matter.

Andy will forever be remembered as an innovator and a pioneer within the movie industry
Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell are the master of motion capture, to see them opposite one another in the Planet of the Apes movies was brilliant.
One of the most underrated actors of all time.
I'd like to thank my cat, God, and Peter Jackson for this award...in that order.
Hopefully God's ok with playing second fiddle to a cat
@@benwasserman8223
God: "alright mate, i'll allow that"
The freaking cat. We owe him so much
@@ShatteredGlass916 Cat: "Very well, let it be done."
Then God should be in third. The cat, for the inspiration, Peter Jackson for making it happen and then God for being a freeloader, as usual.
Great voice, great cat ;)
Andy Serkis is a god damn international treasure.
Amazing actor!
R.I.P Dizz. Wonder if you knew what you were the inspiration for
So many great actors!
GASP! He references Mr. Benn! I loved Mr. Benn when I was a kid. It totally fired my imagination.
Go figure
He is a voice actor, dummy.
That was incredibly interesting to listen.
That was great. Thank you
He brought to life an ape and a monster through motion capture, and opened up a new form of filmmaking technology now known as motion capture. Andy Serkis is a legend.
poor Andy, he wrote an book , he played multiple roles like King Kong , Star Wars , Avengers ... and everyone who meets him : "YOU are Gollum, do the Gollum" !
Andy’s book about being Gollum is GREAT
Well that's an icon role same with Mark Hamill he has done other stuff but 89% of people will say LUKE SKYWALKER 10% will say JOKER !!!! and the rest think who the fuck is that old guy ?
I had a cat help me in something similar. My ex and I use to play World of Warcraft and I was laying awake one night in the dark trying to come up with the name of a new character I was creating, which sometimes is very difficult. As I was laying there thinking, my cat had wandered into the room and like Andy's cat, started to hack up a hair ball. Part of my brain wondered "how would you spell that sound?" So the creation of my Night Elf....Oobleck was born. Little did I know at the time that it's also the name of the mixture of equal amounts of cornstarch and water. It's still one of my favorite characters.

I love how he mentioned its the end of typecasting; cause ironically he actually HAS been typecast as a mo-cap actor ;p
Brilliant guy btw. Love his work
He’s a brilliant storyteller! Got lost in his narrative.
i wish i had the ability to answer one question in seven minutes!!! that's amazing!

Such a pleasant talking voice
1:47 What a brilliant thought process
Brilliant indeed!
What an inspiration man deserves an Oscar!
He's a great actor as a regular character actor too. He did a brilliant job in the Ian Dury Biopic "Sex and drugs and rock n roll"
Loved the nod to Mr. Benn.
Love him
Ahh Gollum got his ring in the end
What a great insight into what helped Andy develope that character. "...3 1/2 foot ring junkie." lmao!
I first discovered Serkis long before Lotr in a music video called woman sang by Neneh Cherry. It took me a while to remember him and make the connection between the characters but he really is a good actor.
I absolutely love this
Only 2% actors have this kinda talent they're more than other actors but Oscar judges are blind they don't know what the real acting is...
Oscar are awards for the best cocksuckers, not the best actors.
Mr Ben! Now that takes me back!
Precious 💍
AR will make us become anyone we want to, it's already is but it's just going to get better and better. It will encourage and make many non-actors want to act and make their own "little scenes" and "little movies".
Gotta love how he got inspired by his cat XD
this guy is a genius, no Andy, no Gollum, and no the lord of the rings, probably he wouldn't have became the famous actor which we all know
They would have still made the movies, dumbass.
@@MrParkerman6 And it would be lesser for it dumbass :D yes it would be made and it would still be good but Gollum is a key part of the story and Andy killed it 10000% perfect choice.
A brilliant actor and such a likeable person. He is fantastic as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy!
This explanation is as drawn out as some of the movies...but also like the movies..its still cool enough to watch
The modern-day " Man of a Thousand Faces ". Great talent.
Best actor in the whole epic.
My precious!!!
