    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
It's been a long time coming, my last saw blade tomahawk just does not stand the test of time, and it's time for an upgrade. Now easier to make, cheaper, and more sturdy. It's all around better this time. Made of a framing saw blade, a hickory claw hammer replacement handle, some assorted bar-stock steels, and some rivets.

Hey man, I'm taking a welding class in school and one of the key things to making a better weld is structure, I recommend as well as my 40+yr teacher who is a veteran i the machining and metals industry, is to make little arcs back and forth across the metal, or circles, or small zigzags, once you see the glowing red metal, and you use those tips you can control it to make an insanely good weld.

I don't know how well it wood function, but your build males it appear both durable and absolutely eye-catching. The "zombie apocalypse" genre has birthed some wild missile and melee weapons, both functional and just cardboard "for fun" types. The creativity is just great and perfectly illustrates "necessity is the mother of invention".

i try not to discourage or criticise to hard so please take what i say with a grain of salt.
im a veteran welder. been doing it ten years. get rid of the cheap harbor freight welder you have. its not adjustable. spend the money on a miller or lincoln welder. even a small one will be perfecr for your aplications. thin metal like what your working with should be tig welded. its sturdy and doesnt apply too much heat to warp your metal. but mig welding will suffice. secondly get rid of your harbor freight welding hood and buy a cheep auto tint by miller or lincoln. if you cant afford it get in touch with me and ill give you mine i dont use it much. also. stop wasting money on those flap wheels. flap discs are food for shinning up your weld. but never grind your weld flat. not for your applications. grind it to look pretty but leave the girth of the weld. use the flap wheel to clean up the splatter and round egdes and add the shiney sheen. also a cheap plasma cutter from harbor freight will help you alot instead of using a grinder to cut thin steel like you use. yes some money will have to be dumped and i get that you wont be able to buy it all at once. but keep trying. again want a good auto tint hood? let me know and you can have mine.

Neat or should I say cute project. Nicely done. Welding tip: Start with a tack weld at each end of your joint. Tack again at the center point between ends, then again between an end tack and the center, then the other end and center. Keep splitting the distance between welds, do first at one end then the other trying to keep the heat as far away from the last tack as possible. Eventually joining all of these tack welds into one long weld joint. This is especially useful when working with thin materials as it prevents blow through and overheating. You will also be able to turn up your amps and wire feed for better penetration on each tack. Tack sequence, 1-6-4-3-5-7-2.

I actually learn to weld about 2 months ago and got it first try, welding flat bar 10mm to make a seat frame. Something I was taught is to move left to right over the gap you're welding rather than travelling the length of it in a straight line which in looks like you have. I'm not sure if it is any different for you because the blades are possibly thinner than the flat steel I was using but I hope this helps 😊

    • @sidraket
      @sidraket 8 років тому

+darronjknight The US actually uses 'customary' units, which is based on the same older units that the imperial system is, but is actually a distinct system of measurements, as both countries redefined their units in the 19th century, independently. The result is a very similar system but with slightly different unit values.
Its commonly called imperial however, because people typically dont do the research to understand precisely why the USA is, in fact, number 1. Of course its understandable that most take it for granted given how obvious it is, but for a full appreciation of americas superior nature, i like to dig deep and find out just why we are so gosh darn better :^)

Quick tip i learned when i started welding is cut or grind a bevel into the two pieces I'm welding together so that there's more weld material overall making for a stronger connection and it allows you to grind the excess weld off making it look cleaner without compromising strength.

As far as the welding goes, try with a few scrap pieces of what youre gonna put the final weld on to get the welder set. I noticed the arc was kinda all over the place. When you're setting it up, look for a consistent arc, and honestly as weird as it sounds, listen for what I can only describe as bees in a jar when setting the sire speed once you get an idea of what kind of heat you need. Hope that helps!

welding tip my friend, when you make beads make small circles inside of each as you go left or right, VERY VERY VERY SLOWLY, welding isnt exciting, its like watching paint dry. i was in a welding class in highschool and all we did all day was weld on a sheet of metal to build material, and we did this both flat, horizontal, vertical and from above us.
    id recommend practicing that.

Welding tip: draw little overlapping circles over the seam with the welder. It will help you control your welding speed.

When you use a wielder. You want to try and make little 8 motions as you wield. It took me a long time to get use to that motion. I often got blobs or barely enough to work, but i've been getting better with it. Hope this helps.

about the 60 fps thing, no i think you lose that sense of motion that you get from the slight motion blur of 30 fps, i think 60fps works best for gameplay. anyways i dont speak for everyone, but if you agree thumbs up this comment so Eli can see it

try rocking the tip of the welding nozzle back and fourth between the two metals to get a consistent bead of weld going also heat of arch means alot to cold it won't bind the metal to hot it will burn through it.

Hiya. I'm not an expert welder, but I've done quite a lot. It looks like you're not making the weld wide enough. Try going from a bit further onto the solid metal on one side, then move quite quickly to solid metal on the other side of the gap, and to-and-fro, trying to keep the motion fairly smooth (yes, this does take a fair bit of practice). If the weld is bitty or dips, you might increase the wire feed-rate. From the look of the weld, increasing your feed-rate might be a good idea however you end up making the weld. If you've got good penetration grinding down lumps afterward should be no problem. I hope this is helpful and not assuming too much. Cheers.

hey man, don't be discouraged by how your welding looks. welding takes years of constant practice. and those are actually pretty good considering your welding experience.

  • @XRIDER0002

what I would suggest is to bridge the two pieces with a "c" pattern (backwards works Cs work too, it what I do) and what I do it go a bit farther over with the top of my "c" and go back down hitting the top the privious C for half of the C and the other half bridging the two pieces, this melts the 2 metals and the bead together making it one piece. comes out very clean and very strong.

    • @XRIDER0002
      @XRIDER0002 8 років тому

also, for practice, just take 2 8th inch steel plates tac them to get her to form a "T" and the just build your welds on top of each other, it very good practice, and to see if they are good, cut the block in half after you fill it, if no holes, you did well. hopefully this helped :D

Best way to practice welding (for me anyway)
Use some angle iron and weld across the inner corner, it works to help how and what you do*

60 fps is weird, but it's better because it doesn't seem choppy and distant, it seems more real. also, a little help with the welder, it looked like you were using a stick welder. if you are, don't move the stick in a straight line like that, pause for a few seconds on one spot, then move it along the line about half an inch and then back almost over the original spot really fast, and pause it there and repeat. it basically builds a puddle, moves the arc so the puddle can cool, then overlaps another puddle on top of it. also, if I didn't explain it well enough, look up stick welding whip and pause technique. hope that helps.

  • @KINGYAMAHA

Welding advice: Slow way down first of all. You need to make a little circle, making a small pool of metal. Once you have that little puddle of metal, make small circles spreading the pool down (along the connection line of the desired weld). Each circle should overlap about half or more of the previous circle made. Just remember, you are melting both sides of the metal and mixing them together. It looks like you are just welding down in a straight line, it is important to do arcs or circles to mix both sides of the liquid metal together. I hope this makes sense. Keep up the good work.

Tip for welding, remove contaminants, and your puddle is your guide. Dont watch the arc watch the red puddle behind the arc, an even consistent flow is your first real step to improving your welds

Has any one ever told you that if you add a bevel to what your welding together will give you a stronger weld? As for the look of the weld after the fact I know guys (myself included) who still have to take a grinder to clean the welds up, so keep at it. The skill with the welded comes with time. Keep at it Laddy!

if you are working with mostly carbon steel try stick welding instead of mig. i took welding in school and they started with stick because its a lot easier than mig or tig, plus welding takes a lot of "constant" practice, and its not like riding a bike you can't just get good and stay good you have to keep practicing

I've been welding for 7 years. A little tip slow it down a little bit and if your using flux core wire there will be slag covering it if your using regular wire u need inert gas to protect the weld from contaminants and porosity holes.

Btw for welding you should weld both sides because you are an amateur but once you get good and can achieve penetration when welding one side only do one side and then grind it down. If you want to know if you did it right, grind the weld bead till flush with the parent metals and if it holds you did it right

The best way to get into welding is to start with stick welding not mig. Stick Can be a bit more expensive because of the electrodes but it's a good way to get the hang of it. Also make sure ur not too far away from the metal but not to close and check what ur amperage is because that's how fast u can weld will form

i am a welder and fabricator in the uk so i apologise if the terms are different but concerning your welding it looks like you are using a mig wlder in witch case you need to be using a shielding gas such as argon and you the welding direction should be away from you so the shelding gas covers the metal before you weld it and my preferred method if doing half moons with the gun as it gives the best finish in my opinion

Glad your channel is doing well. You should do a theme build. For example science fiction, fantasy, anime, or even a specific, game, movie, or show. Your builds so far remind me of Borderlands or Fallout so it wouldn't be much extra work. I would also love to see a PVC crossbow and easy/cheap to make bolts...maybe out of dowel rods, thin PVC pipe, Rebar.

hey a good welding technique i learned is if youre welding two flat ends together grind a bevel in the conjoining ends and weld in the crevice and grind over it with a flap disk and it will look like one peace and you wont be grinding any of the weld that is actually holding them together

  • @jcthesuperbeast

great job! a tip for the next time you try welding something like this. Bevel the edges of the two pieces you wish to weld first to give you a groove to weld into. build up your weld inside the groove then use a grinder to take off any excess. also depending on your welder you may need to adjust your settings and wire feed speed if you're using a mig welder(I couldn't tell in the video what you were using as it was too dark). still a great build, keep up the great work and keep practicing on your welds
