You remind me of me when I was a lil grommet... Since you are into this kind of stuff heres a fun project. I used to go to the local collectors firearms store which was ashop that sold collectable guns and various other antique weapons and trinkets. They had a barrel with old beat up swords that sold for cheap. Most were not worth messing with but sometimes I would find an old blade in there that was made of quality steel, I would buy it from them and refurbish it by hand, shaping, polishing, sharpening, crafting new leather handles and leather scabbards for the swords..After I was done with each project I would take it back to the place I bought it and sell it to them at 4 times what I paid for it... The finished product was unrecognizable as something I bought out of their bargain bin and they never knew...Haha!....
I only discovered this guy today and he is amazing! He makes use of what he has and doesn't have a ton of expensive equipment. The way he improvises so much and it works.

I am an old Phart but I enjoyed watching your video. I grew up on a farm with me the oldest and only boy with two sisters. I spent a lot of time making bows, spears, slingshots etc on rainy days when My Dad wasn't working my tail off. It is great to see that the younger generation is experimenting out in the garage. One project I loved as a kid was making a slingshot, similar to the one in the Bible that young King David used to kill Goliath. Two 48 inch leather boot laces with a pouch made from the tongue of an old boot and you have a deadly weapon. A ten minute build but thousands of hours of enjoyment practicing.. If the SHTF, mastery of this simple weapon could be a life saver.
Your pretty cool man I'm glad you enjoy doing these videos because I really like watching them and I'm really happy that your not afraid to express your faith
Just for future reference- the lawnmower blade would've been fine without heat treating (in fact heating up the blade would just draw out the temper already in the blade) as long as it was kept from overheating.

At the beginning you came off as annoying, but you're a pretty smart kid. Glad to see you know your shit, or at least you're doing your best to learn from your mistakes while meeting problems and making a plan to deal with them. Keep blacksmithing alive, even if it's using a hand torch, speaker magnet and an oven. :P Another trick you can use, if you didn't already know, is if you have the lights down low or off, you can tell when it's ready to quench when its the color of the red rising sun. Should be non-magnetic at that point.
nick schafer I don't need you to tell me what smithing is. I was a metalsmith's apprentice for quite some time. I have used every type of peened tool you can think of, sledge hammers, pneumatic hammers, drop forge, chisels, tongs, hardy tools, punches, monkey tools, vices, coal and propane forges with hand crank, bellows and electric blower, and I can tell you that stock removal or grinding is a part of smithing, whether you use a power tool or a water wheel and stone. Blacksmith black (iron), smith (artisan) It doesn't matter what tools you use to achieve what you need to do, but whether you are crafting something from iron/steel.

You don't NEED to polish it after the tempering. It is a good idea to make sure you have it clean for it's last coat of oil to avoid rusting, but it's a longevity measure. Usually you temper then put the final edge on. You don't want a very fine edge when heat treating and tempering because it makes it more likely to warp the blade.
He's right. I'm a knifemaker, and when I send my blades out for HT, Everyone tells me not to put an edge on it because of warping. I've never had it happen, but I'll learn from it when it does 😉.
Hunter Hengst Haha. Yeah the day it happens will be a sad one. I'm pretty sure it has to do with what kind of metal you're using. If you're using modern materials that you are just shaping, I doubt you'll run into an issue. If you're making your own billets from plumes or mixing materials it's probably more likely to happen. I think it has to do with irregularities in the material.
U just grind that there primary bevel down to .020 inches and ur all good, shant warp provided u pre heat ur quench and make sure that u heat the metal to the lowest possible temp before the quench,it's not the tempering that warps it, it's that there quench, tempering ain't a shock to the metal at all, I mean if u make a rig and temper, u can get sum bends out, but it won't warp shit naturally

Cacalari Bus A stone age spear? Well yeah, steel is heavier than stone, I showed in the video though that you can hit a target at least 30 feet away, and that's with no spear throwing experience. Definitely wouldn't say the extra couple ounces make it a close range weapon.

One of the most proliferate (but understandable) wrong assumptions about metallurgy. No, it doesn't.
