  • In 2017, FWRI began a project examining how Florida sandhills are using urbanized areas. Avian biologists use cellular GPS transmitters and/or color bands in suburbs and developed areas as well as rural and conservation areas to help us better understand survivorship, productivity, and habitat use along the urban gradient.

We have been seeing these in NW Ohio for the last 4 or 5 years. The local Wildlife State Park might have seen them longer(Not sure) Im just near lots of Farm fields and they seem to circle the area. One day they are in the North field. The next morning or day they will be in SW field near the woods. Just a group of 3 of them.

Thank you for your comment. The Florida sandhill crane (G. c. pratensis), is a non-migratory year-round breeding resident. They are joined every winter by ~25,000 migratory greater sandhill cranes (G. c. tabida), the larger of the two subspecies, and likely the birds you are seeing. The greater sandhill crane winters in Florida but nests in the Great Lakes region. You can read more about sandhill cranes here: myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/birds/cranes/sandhill-crane/

This seems pointless when other states are allowed to hunt this supposedly protected bird.
