What Working at a Maid Cafe in Japan is Like (Interview)

  • Maid cafés are a subcategory of cosplay restaurants found predominantly in Japan. Waitresses dressed in maid costumes act as servants, and treat customers as masters and mistresses in a private home, rather than as café patrons. If you’re interested in working at a maid cafe in Japan, I hope this video will help you understand what it is like actually.
    =============================================
    Special thanks to @home cafe to let me interview the maids. Check it out if you’re interested in going there:

    I'm kind of interested in what kind of psychologial benefits or detriments frequenting a place like this can have on a patron. I'd like to think that positive attention from attractive women, artificial or real, ought to be good for a man. At the same time, if you are too analytical and can see through the act, then it may make you even more self conscious. Either way, I do think it could be a stepping stone in getting more comfortable around women and female attention even though it does not realistically represent 'normal' interactions.

    • @Svoorhout85

      Its similair to a hostess club. As you said, some people see through the act and know their kindness and acts of affection is not sincere. But some people are completely immersed and some even become obsessed, spending a fortune on gifts to their favorite girls. Not to mention the entrance fee and overpriced food and beverages. Convinced that their affection is genuine. To the point they sometimes bankrupt themselves.
      But a maid cafe also appears to be like an interactive theater performance. Thats where my analogy frays a bit I guess. Maybe thats why maid cafes are more commonly open to tourists? (hostess clubs rarely are)

      I don't think otakus and video game lovers have much power in real life, be it over circumstances or attraction from the opposite sex. Here they get to temporarily escape to a world where they are masters over a bunch of subservient attractive maids, giving them a very artificial and escapist(in other words fake) way of feeling self worth.
      Which is why I think all hostess bars are not really a healthy phenomenon, in the sense that they give you an artificial self-esteem in exchange from money from you. But I suppose it's just like how people use cigarettes or alcohol to escape the inner tensions within their mind, even though they know how unhealthy it is.

Maybe it's also a nice way for Japanese people to feel special after a day of hard work or study without much fun or personal attention? Good luck to them.

    I went to one with my wife when we lived in Japan. We had a great time. It was so cute and there were games and singing and dancing. We got bunny ears to wear while there. The food was all cute, but a bit expensive.
    I remember a maid coming to me with a mic during a song and I got to sing "moe moe" a few times.😁

They even try have a small chat/talk with you and make your experience unique.

    I see this less as cringe and more as a continuation of the geisha culture. They have the same things in common:
    - beautiful, wearing nice clothes, perfectly behaved.
    - ranking system where you can work yourself up to improve your maid or maiko/geisha status.
    - perfectly serve the guest (referred to as "master"/"mistress"), almost like reading their mind and knowing exactly what pleases them.
    - elegantly but efficiently selling them food and maybe even prolongue their stay or make them return to the facility.
    This is amazing. There is a certain appeal to such kind of businesses. I wonder if people would like that if f.eg. a tavern in England or Germany would fully act out and recreate old-style butlers, medieval-age-style, or late 19th century-style cafés. With fitting interior and according behaviour and immersion by the staff. Definitely Japanese tourists would check those out!

    Great video. I have been hoping to go to a cafe if I ever manage to go to Japan. I had always been under the belief that many hate working there (I'm still sure there are some), but seeing how much they say that they strive to work there and love the work with that much enthusiasm makes me want to go there all the more. I've been attempting to learn Japanese to make their job easier, but they're putting in effort to learn English is impressive.
    I bet they're a lot better at English than they would care to say.

    • @Chameleonxx3

      Are they not both hostesses? Don't they both have to be trained. Don't both have to be knowledgeable about subjects in order to entertain? Can't the ancient and modern coexist? I think the difference is superficial. Explain the big differences please.

    • @julosx
      @julosx 6 років тому +3

      Geishas training is a lot longer, it takes years. It involves much deeper learning, in music and literature particularly. Therefore they can stay in business longer than a maid in a cafe.
