You’re not wrong. He needs to start at the top and clarify the structure there first, and prune less and less out of the bottom branches to ensure they maintain vigor. If he doesn’t work the top, he’s going to be fighting a losing battle.
The underlying trunk and branch structure is magnificent and in my opinion it now looks more aesthetically balanced with itself and it's environment. Love it.
I was surprised he didn’t go for a single leader and a cone shape. That might be the first time I’ve ever seen him thin the bottom and leave the top alone. Glad to see he’s open to other styles honestly

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, that juniper looks like God and the fierce North - westerly winds had a hand in shaping it on some rocky headland along the Northern coast of Lake Superior here in Ontario, Canada.
The Yamagata Deshojo is lovely in its green and delicately red phase. Good to learn how principles of Bonsai apply to garden Trees and see techniques for reaching high branches. One does see the branches better after pruning! Hommages to the venerable Kaizuka Juniper.
The most important view of your tree in this maple and also in this juniper is not from the road, it's just from your house, that's also a bad bonsai habit! To want show how the trees are awesome ;) Thanks sensei

It's very pretty now. Especially with the glow from the windows coming through. I feel like I want a layering of both the maple and the juniper to preserve them. Alhough that was when I thought you were going to take the whole juniper down 🤣
😨 my head screamed NOOOOO don't cut it, it looks beautiful, BUT I have to admit it looks even more beautiful now 😊. I have a really lovely acer (not sure of its name) with very fine 'fingery' leaves that's bright green at the moment but turns red soon, it has a few of the tiniest seeds that come from tiny little red flowers. This year it has had quite a growth spurt, and after watching your video today I realise I need to thin it out, but I would be mortified if I spoilt it ( cause I love it💖). Thankyou Peter for spending time filming and teaching us all. X
Now ThAT is more to what I like to do - prune back the big trees with shears. I have a knack for doing this; just look at the form of the tree and where you want it to go. I got to exercise this at a local high school a few years ago with a church volunteer group to "beautify" and clean up the property. They had a very large interior garden area and we transformed it with about 20 people in 3 hours!

You can trim all trees and shrubs in the winter, as long as the temperatures don't get well below freezing for the next 10-14 days. They are dormant then and you don't have to worry about insects infecting the cuts. Kind of a gamble to predict the weather, but late winter is usually safe. I did notice cuts I made in the winter still wept a little when it warmed up more, but maybe it weeps less than a warm weather cut.
After watching this yesterday morning, I finally got the courage to prune my 30 year old (not a deshojo) maple tree. Followed your principle of reducing the density to allow more light into the centre and through the tree. I have a deshojo which this year has never fully turned green.I air-layered a branch and removed after 10 weeks as it appeared to have some good roots. I removed about 50% of foliage and potted into large pot of sphagnum moss sitting in dish of water. Almost all remaining foliage is shrivelling. Is there still hope? What do I do with it over winter (leave in sphagnum moss / dish; leave outdoors?)

Hi peter, I bought a small deshojo from your nursery a few months ago. It started off growing nicely, but now it's not looking great. Cant see a single healthy looking leaf. Any ideas as to what I've done wrong? The field maple I bought from you last year is unstoppable and now at least twice the size it was last year.
Japanese growers don't recognise Shindeshojo. They feel there is no difference. I have asked many growers in Japan about this and they all say the same thing.
Peter, i have a red maple that i transplanted at beginning of august into a bonsai pot (mistake that i learned from) and had to bring into my home and put under grow light to save it because it appeared to be suffering from the transplant. it seems to be getting better and i have new growth on it. i let it get too tall and want to cut it back. is it ok to go ahead and cut the top off to the height that i want Or should i wait until the tree looks to be fully recovered from my mistake of transplanting? thanks for any advice.

We have had a very hot and dry Summer so most maples have had leaf scorch. Be patient and next year the leaves will be OK.

What kind of ladder is that?
Thats a genuine Japanese Tree Ladder that I bought from Japan about 12 years ago made of Dural. The Chinese now make a copy of that and much cheaper.
