I picked up a Bronica ETRS paired with a 75mm f2.8 in absolutely mint condition for just under $300. Looks like medium format film will be my thing for the foreseeable future. Well, until the digital price point drops to a reasonable range.
About that the rule is it correct ? I've always heard that, with a full frame camera you can go as slow as your focal lens. 1/30 with a 30 mm lens. And you only have to double it when using a crop sensor. Following that logic, when using a medium format camera, should'nt it be divided by 2 or something like that? I'm seriously wondering, so if someone can tell me I'd be glad.
@@BlackOrgie666 This is not a rule. this is just a hint to you to reduce the chances of getting a blurry shot. Accordingly, doubling by two you increase your chances. I usually use x1 on lenses without stabilization and / 2 on lenses with stabilization
Those files look gorgeous! Would love to see you focus on some landscape photography with lots of dynamic range to see how well the files hold up next time you get the camera. Thanks for the informative video!
I'm in love with my GFX 50S but would love IBIS in this body. I don't need the 100mp, but would really like the stabilization. (That said, I do love the ergonomics of the 50S and don't think I'd consider parting with them for the 100, even if I would consider the expenditure.)
Rather than 100MP ,50 MP sensor and larger pixel and same IBIS with higher FPS 16bit RAW and 8k video would make medium format cameras more compelling and challenge the full frame Cameras.. The HDR would be amazing 😍😍
@@asbinojha Fuji gfx 50r destroy all new ff, what are you even talking about, image quality is second none, dynamic range and crop factor or 14 bit MF images. If you want 16 bit raw. Just get pentax 645d 5 year old camera still destroying all the full frame in image quality.
Here are the things, I think, worth a good review :-) How is skin color? What about the sync flash? Is there stack focus functions like Phase One or Hass? Maybe a comparison with a Phase for the focusing? A large print test too? Is the workflow "tethered" with Capture One is easy and fast?
I still haven't lost hope for an affordable mirrorless camera with a full frame 645 sensor and way less megapixels. Huge pixels + hge dynamic range and features dedicated for portraits! Till then, I'm sticking to large format film cameras :D
one thing i enjoy about medium format is the perspective it gives. You get a nice coverage of the foreground without needing any strong angular view from the lens, awell as it keeps a more natural proportion of size between the foreground/background elements in the image, something tele lenses aren't good at. It's quiet unique, and it gets more and more valued the more you're able to notice it because it gives a more natural feel in a way of what your eyes would percieve. Same thing happens when you compare, let's say, 18mm apsc versus 28mm ff photos, the apsc's seem wider than the ff's and more unnatural, they just don't feel as special even if they are equivalent focal lengths. Having said this, and with the fact that the "medium format" is something we photographers fondly speak about... Why hasn't fujifilm came up with a 20mp medium format more affordable camera? I truly don't need 50 nor 100mp but i would love to be able to achieve this look on my photgraphy, it's beautifull.
I was considering this camera. Then a7riv came out and made me think is that enough and really what is the difference. So since you asked what would we like to see. I would love to see the medium format difference that everyone speaks of. Not just in resolution but in these tones that you also spoke of in one of your image samples. I would love to see how something like an a7riii or a7riv looks in the same shot if there really is a difference other then resolution.
I remain content with my two canon 80D camera bodies and my Tamron 10 to 24 and sigma 24 to 70. I have enough trouble decoding and storing 24 MG RAW files. I bought them used for $500 each and added Neeware battery packs for about $50 each and Yunongo RX600 strobes for $67 each. the future is not in bigger sensors, it's with better small sensors. I have a sigma 70 to 300 with image stabilization. I have shot architecture at night at 1/60, hand held, with no discernible blur It cost me $560 new. You are right about Dogfish Head. The 60 minute is the best.
@@lightbox617 Overall I think you're right, at least for most photographers. I've never had a problem with lack of detail from 24 megapixels. But I think this type of camera will be big for certain types of pros who either do stuff that requires big resolution or might now be able to move into that area thanks to the lower price point compared to the competition. Of course hobbyists with deep pockets will probably like it as well!
For large format printing (over 3 x 4 feet) 50mp and up will produce much better results. The demographic for a camera like this is niche, but worth the investment for those who need it. For most people, 24mp is MORE than enough.
Test Suggestions (if it’s not to late): • Compare the TIFF vs. JPEG: Please look at and compare the images (& histogram) displayed in the camera body, during image review, to the same images when downloaded on your computer. My understanding is that we can choose which rendered image is shown when shooting. My presumption is that TIFF would look different from JPEG and closer to the RAW image. • Product photography (or otherwise tethered) set up esp. with the 120mm
I love medium format stuff. I'm very much just a run and gun hobbiest and my A7iii does everything I could ever ask of it. Medium format seems so far out of my skill level (definitely out of the budget) but I'm fascinated by it. I'd love to see more on this, I'll probably never buy one or even use it but I just love what they can do.
I think there is one more very important thing that you don’t really talk about the AF system. Having worked a lot with medium format cameras of all sorts over the last 12-14 years this is definitely a big step ahead for the medium format. Still not sure how I feel about the colors but it’s a super impressive camera with a lot of features we just haven’t seen in medium format yet.
Being mostly a landscape photographer and one that shoots Fuji at the moment, I am obviously attracted to this camera. However, I think if I were to afford any Fuji MF camera, it would be the 50R. Smaller, more portable for my hikes, and way more affordable
How does it compare to the Hasselblad H6d-100c photo and video? Seem like the video on the h6d is better but that just may be the skill set of the operators.
If I used a 100 meg camera or a 10 meg camera the result would be the same with me, crap! Love your tech details about subjects but at the end it is all about the final image.
great review. the real question is how with the fuji system hold up once all the manufacturers catch up. the second entry in to a field usually benefits from the limitations of the first. Also, this hopfully will make MF digital backs a little less expensive
Rather than 100MP ,50 MP sensor and larger pixel and same IBIS with higher FPS 16bit RAW and 8k video would make medium format cameras more compelling and challenge the full frame Cameras.. The HDR would be amazing 😍😍
Great video, thanks for giving an informative overview of this camera. I wondered, how did you handle the OIS of the GF 120mm lens when using the IS of the camera sensor? Did you turn it off on the lens, or is the camera smart enough to work with it while turned on? I'm a very satisfied GFX 50s user and don't see changing this body for some time to come, but the 100 looks awfully good. I am, however, hoping for a firmware update for the 50s somewhere down the road that might give a bump in the frame-to-frame speed (including autofocus, image processing, etc), even though I don't use it as an action cam...I'd like it to be a little more responsive.
I was very interested in this camera and the Fuji medium format in general until I saw a fine art landscape photographer immediately return it due to extreme shallow depth of field. Anything with a foreground required focus stacking. As someone who shoots architecture, landscape, and outdoor adventure I'm most of the time wanting as much depth of field as I can get so it looks like this camera, and maybe medium format is not for me? Wish I could play around with this and their wide lens. You mentioned doing more videos on this camera, would love for you to expand on this subject to help guys like me in the 35mm world understand what's going on and just how bad (or good if that's what you want!) it is. Thanks, enjoyed the video.
Hi 👋🏽 I have a question how much money would it take to produce a medium format film camera in today society like do you think there’s is enough people who like the holga camera to back up a Kickstarter to reproduce the holga in Metal with a light meter and changing lenses. Just a question I’m throwing out into the universe.
I would buy a specialty GFX100 N version stripped of all video features. And pair the camera with a new series of very small specialty prime lenses with f8 as the largest aperture. This would be the dream setup for landscape, studio portrait and street photography.
I would like to see you compare with a FF or APS-C camera all under exposing as you did and then pull up the shadows. I wonder if there would be a difference?
Another great and well balanced youtube video. I own the GFX100, the X1dii and nearly any Sony which is out there including their lenses. I said it before and will surely say it now again. Please do not get me wrong, the GFX100 is a really nice camera. Its great on paper and engineering wise. Image quality.?? the X1dii is overall better. I have seen it again and again. The X1dii is a sharper and less noisy image in higher ISOs. The 102 mpx come at a great ISO noise cost. The video.?? The video is indeed great. As good as my Blackmagic URSA mini and its nearly half its size. Going on a trip soon and decided to devote it completely to the GFX100 and keep my A7R4 at bay. Lastly, note that GFX100 eats through its batteries. A set of 4-6 batteries should be your bare minimum. If you plan to shoot handheld in low light and high ISO the GFX100 and A7R4 are NOT your best options.
i think we need "mm", not megapixel......because honestly, I was more impressed by a 12-year-old Aptus 22 rather than the GFX50 I tested last year. But you got a point, Lr is not ready for that kind of file (the Aptus raw too) , and I wonder how much it is for all the others. (by the way, i bought that digital back right away)
With good light conditions, the older digital backs that had 48x36mm size - they still rock! Especially for portraits. There is someting in that look from a sensor with huge pixels!
I've been flipping whether I should get this or the x1dii, I don't need any bells or whistles that the Fuji has, the Hasselblad is cheaper, I'd really only need a standard lens, probably have enough in 50mp. Thoughts?
You make reference to the Phase One 100mp sensor (I have an IQ160), but have you started to do a face-to-face comparison with/against Phase One? While I am fully immersed into Phase One, the singular significant complaint I have is that they are only expanding their product line by going up, and not "out". I see the market expanding for medium format the way Fuji is going - mirrorless - and Phase One needs a rude awakening with hands on comparisons with Fuji, that the market is not 150mp, then a futuristic "IQ5 200mp" digital back {I have no knowledge of Phase One's product road map, but a 200mp digital back seems to be their next stop.}
Ted, how did you find the viewfinder? Would you be at home with it using it in a studio? I have been waiting for EVF's to come up to traditional optical in use before considering them seriously. The camera sounds pretty cool overall though.
The Hasselblad X1D 2 is a medium format mirrorless and costs $4,200 less than the GFX 100. Aside from having 2x the megapixels, what makes the GFX 100 worth the extra dough?
How about event photography and family portraits (with kids)? Any way to test that before the next video? I have 50S and I may go for 100s around same time next year (unless fujifilm leaks GFX 50s successor that's not 50r). So I am curious to learn more.
Always informative and entertaining Ted. For those of us that might be lured away from high-end FF mirrorless, maybe you could show us the speed and accuracy of its AF. MF has never been known for fast AF, so curious to see what improvements were made here. The stunning IQ and flexibility in post for landscapes/portraiture is very enticing.
Since when has the optimal shutter speed been double the focal lenght? I always learned and used just focal lenght. So 50mm minimum would be 1/50. Never had any trouble with that.
The pixel pitch of the GFX 100 and the OM-D EM-10 are the quite the same (3,76 vs 3,74 micrometer). Is the BSI sensor (maybe including the processor) so much better concerning noise?
I've heard a few pro's over here in the UK discussing the possible purchase of this as apposed to having to hire same when required by customer. Things are definitely changing and fuji have realised this by avoiding FF which is an over saturated market. interesting times ahead.
I suspect Fuji looked at FullFrame35mm and decided it was a crowded market and not different enough from Super35mm/APS-C. Panasonic is the same way with u4/3rds and FullFrame35mm. And given the big price deltas, they minimize cannibalizing the smaller platform with their customers fleeing to the "newer/bigger/better" platform.
In the video you recommended Capture One for processing files from the Fuji GFX 100. Is there a technical reason for choosing Capture One over Adobe Lightroom? Or was the recommendation simply due to most familiar? Thanks,
Wow, this camera is so impressive... I wonder how it would perform for astrophotography... I mean long exposures with a tracker of deep sky objects then stacked
Is that really the rule for hand held shutter speed? I always thought it was the same shutter speed as focal length down to whatever is your lower limit (mine is 1/30 without stabilisation). Ooopsie!
@@mastaw Yeah, I thought about that after I wrote it too :-) I never really bothered compensating for the bigger film plane with medium format film cameras, and thankfully it (mostly) turned out fine. I guess experience is good for something!
Ted any update on your thoughts with this camera? WIth the end of 2019 I am debating on GFX100 setup or jumping in on a certified Phase One refurb Iq3100. Thx
I don't know but I miss the 6x6 sensor I'm not chasing the MP count, less is more. Yes I would love to see Texas Leica 690 or similar size senzor... But 6x6 cm it would be nice if it would be total size of the sensor.
I wonder if medium format will overtake the current trend of FF mirrorless. Fujifilm is making it more affordable than ever and probably will continue doing so. If it gets enough glass to go along with it, I may end up skipping 35mm mirrorless and go from DSLR straight to 120mm in a few years.
There's no doubt it will. It just may take another 10 years or so. Remember, full frame was almost completely out of reach for hobbyist and enthusiasts alike until Nikon released the D600 for just under $2000 back in 2012.
The answer is yes. Larger than full frame. Phase detection autofocus. In-body image stabilization. Great ergonomics. Great lenses. Someone who has been fooling around with smaller Leica and Fuji cameras, who has dual 4k monitors, and who has access to a great printer will get one of these and do significant work.
Love your vids! Would love them even more if you'd shut that white door in the background. Especially when you light it. It is BY FAR, the brightest thing on screen, which is very distracting. I'm trying to focus on "the talent" while your speaking. Thanks for your reviews!
@@odemata87 Foveon cameras are really really slow and low light performance is bad, fuji gfx 50r is on another level when it comes to low light and af, image quality too.
a non-sequitur point in the name of friendly brand competition... PENTAX needs to release three retro-inspired MIRRORLESS cameras (using their existing mounts) for the upcoming 100th anniversary: 1) an me-super (APS-C) 2) a simple, rugged k-1000 (full frame) 3) the unprecidented and still incomparable 67 (medium format) if they do anything resembling that logical suggestion, $100 says they won't go out of business. we're all using adapted glass anyway... someone think of the horrid economy.
Exactly my thoughts ever since my first digital camera. All I ever wanted was a digital version of my K1000, and since I'm running around with a Pentax ME in my bag a digital version of that one. Nobody did it but Fuji at least got closest.
@@chrissoclone which is why i bought Fuji. use my Fuji with vintage glass more than anything. sigh. if they could only put two and two together... i would actually start crying if Pentax fired the CEO and said they were going to make another mirrorless camera.
Nice review, Ted. I think when you were using the term "Interrupted" with respect to the innovation this camera presents, you perhaps meant to say it was a "disruptive innovation"? Cheers, Stephen.
Rumors are starting that the new x100f (Fugifilm’s flagship camera) replacement might be FF. They don’t have to build a line of lenses and the market is ripe for a FF Fugi to compete with the Leica Q2. Older baby boomers with money to drop on LeicaQ2 type cameras would consider a camera of this type. FF, 35mm F1.4, weather proofing, leaf shutter, high megapixel, manual film like controls, built in ND filters, macro mode, hybrid EVF over 4 million megapixels, fixed display of 2 million megapixels. Body milled from single piece of marine grade aluminum.
From 60,000 to 10,000 bucks... hmm. I still use my old Hassy with reliable film and scan it on my Nikon scanner at 8000 dpi and make 2x2 m prints for... say, 6 bucks per roll?
Will it change MFD? Yes, until someone releases a full frame 60x45mm sensor with 16+ stops of DR. :-) What I'd like to see: how it handles light sources at night. No digital camera that I have seen so far - photo or cine - can handle light sources as well as film can. The Sony A7RIV seems to be pretty good, though. We'll see!
I couldn't watch the whole video. Memories of my cheap Kievs sealed with electrical tape to control the light bleed . . . The acute pain in my wallet at the thought of how much this one would cost. I want one so bad I'd consider selling a kidney. Great video.

@@peterlemke3468 Thanks for the kind words! 😊
The Hasselblad X1D 2 is a medium format mirrorless and costs $4,200 less than the GFX 100. Aside from having 2x the megapixels, what makes the GFX 100 worth the extra dough?
@** Wow, sounds like you made a nice upgrade to the GFX 100 then. May I ask what type of photography you're into?
You forgot to factor in the price of those lenses.
How about event photography and family portraits (with kids)? Any way to test that before the next video?
I have 50S and I may go for 100s around same time next year (unless fujifilm leaks GFX 50s successor that's not 50r). So I am curious to learn more.
Are the b&w images (besides the first one) shot with the Arcos photo profile? Or are they all post processed b&w in c1?
Always informative and entertaining Ted. For those of us that might be lured away from high-end FF mirrorless, maybe you could show us the speed and accuracy of its AF. MF has never been known for fast AF, so curious to see what improvements were made here. The stunning IQ and flexibility in post for landscapes/portraiture is very enticing.
Since when has the optimal shutter speed been double the focal lenght? I always learned and used just focal lenght. So 50mm minimum would be 1/50. Never had any trouble with that.
As far as I know, the 1:1 rule is meant for full frame cameras. Focal lengths behave differently on different sensor sizes
@@mastaw Then it should be much less for this medium format camera too.
The pixel pitch of the GFX 100 and the OM-D EM-10 are the quite the same (3,76 vs 3,74 micrometer). Is the BSI sensor (maybe including the processor) so much better concerning noise?
What I would like to see from the camera is a 7 foot by 7 foot printed photograph, something like your beach photograph.
What do y think about the frame rate of this camera? I believe it’s 4 frames per second
In the video you recommended Capture One for processing files from the Fuji GFX 100. Is there a technical reason for choosing Capture One over Adobe Lightroom? Or was the recommendation simply due to most familiar?
Thanks,
Just watched your video on Lightroom vs Capture One and got my answer. Thank you
Wow, this camera is so impressive... I wonder how it would perform for astrophotography... I mean long exposures with a tracker of deep sky objects then stacked
a comparison to hasselblad would be cool.
Would love to see some portrait samples.
Is that really the rule for hand held shutter speed? I always thought it was the same shutter speed as focal length down to whatever is your lower limit (mine is 1/30 without stabilisation). Ooopsie!
I'm pretty sure that the sensor size makes the difference here. I also shoot with my shutter speed equal to my focal length on full frame
Thx
What’d you go with ? I’m looking to buy the best medium format under 10k$ but can’t find much info online
Excellent episode. Spot-on review. Pointing out the most important facts photographres care for.
Finally a thorough review without an angry reviewer... Well done Ted.
I would like to hear a lot more about the autofocus system/performance
Despite the great camera experience n review. The amount of information n details u give here makes u the expert. Wow keep up the good work
I don't know but I miss the 6x6 sensor I'm not chasing the MP count, less is more.
Yes I would love to see Texas Leica 690 or similar size senzor... But 6x6 cm it would be nice if it would be total size of the sensor.
And something closest to Texas Leica is Fujifilm GFX50R
@@GungKrisna12 How did you compare Fuji GFX 50R sensor size 43.8 mm x 32.9 mm with Fuji GSW690 because the camera shoots 6x9cm frame?
@@mirko.jankovic only because of their similar body
Imagine if GFX50R uses 6×9 sensor
I remember being surprised when I jumped from 16 to 24 megapixels! I literally have trouble imagining 100.
I was suprised when I switched from 12 to 24 Megapixels... But because I thought the difference would way bigger :D only so a difference when cropping
100MP is only useful for very specific applications. For the most part it just wastes more space on the hard drive.
@@Seanonyoutube True... but imagine the selfie potential!!!
Hasselblad H6D 100c or H6D 400c
I wonder if medium format will overtake the current trend of FF mirrorless. Fujifilm is making it more affordable than ever and probably will continue doing so. If it gets enough glass to go along with it, I may end up skipping 35mm mirrorless and go from DSLR straight to 120mm in a few years.
There's no doubt it will. It just may take another 10 years or so. Remember, full frame was almost completely out of reach for hobbyist and enthusiasts alike until Nikon released the D600 for just under $2000 back in 2012.
Man IBIS in mediumformat just a few years ago you had to go with mft or apsc if you wanted to have IBIS
Cicada looks like it was host to a fungus and did not get to molt. Wish I could afford that hundred megapixel beast.
Hobbiests, if you wanna play with medium format, GO FILM. Is literally 100x cheaper, and it is amazing.
I'd like to see someone trying out the xpan aspect ratio...I think it's 65/24?
Love your vids! Would love them even more if you'd shut that white door in the background. Especially when you light it. It is BY FAR, the brightest thing on screen, which is very distracting. I'm trying to focus on "the talent" while your speaking. Thanks for your reviews!
Excellent overview!
Wow that’s really expensive, maybe give it awhile and some company will find a way to make a more Budget version hopefully
Fujifilm has the 50r that's a rangefinder medium format camera and with two dual card slots! Very small body used prices are usually 3,800
@@RealTechGeek I was just thinking about a medium format rangefinder style camera didn't know Fuji made one thanks
@@josephalmazan4805 You welcome happy to help you out
Try a foveon based camera perhaps? Comparative IQ to medium format some would say
@@odemata87
Foveon cameras are really really slow and low light performance is bad, fuji gfx 50r is on another level when it comes to low light and af, image quality too.
a non-sequitur point in the name of friendly brand competition... PENTAX needs to release three retro-inspired MIRRORLESS cameras (using their existing mounts) for the upcoming 100th anniversary:
1) an me-super (APS-C)
2) a simple, rugged k-1000 (full frame)
3) the unprecidented and still incomparable 67 (medium format)
if they do anything resembling that logical suggestion, $100 says they won't go out of business.
we're all using adapted glass anyway... someone think of the horrid economy.
Fuji should have lent you a microphone as well! What's all that crackling at the beginning of the video?
Great content! Now to convince myself I need medium format..
I don't, which is good for my wallet.
10:25 the right extreme corner have strange blurriness, what's up with that? Image not loading properly?
It would change everything if it had a 'full frame' sensor, even for a premium price. Without it it's just an evolution, a more convenient tool...
the fastest medium format i have ever touched
So funny that all respected photo gear vloggers do the same advertising at the same time. Skillshare is the new squareplace :-)
Please, please do a video on Robert Frank, Ted.
Thank you for your amazing work.
100 mega pixels = almost 300 mega bytes. That’s huge indeed!!! 😊
Is there any settings for noise reduction for the sensor
I wonder if this new medium format could steal some sales away from the top end full-frame DSLRs, especially for wedding and portraiture photography?
You may be on to something. Keep a weathered eye out on the horizon.
Most of the fashion photographers use medium format, because of high income, they want to give best quality for the billboard and so on.
Nice camera 👍 i would like to see how the Autumn colours look from it ?
Me too. My uses for this would be landscape & macro.
is it better then the iphone 11 pro?
Suhaib Ali No, for you iphone still better
@@MrRastler you dont seem too high up from the iphone either mr lightroom tips and tricks
Good breakdown.
Bought one!
What I'd like to see: how it handles light sources at night. No digital camera that I have seen so far - photo or cine - can handle light sources as well as film can. The Sony A7RIV seems to be pretty good, though. We'll see!
60x45mm? No film camera had that image size. 645 format wasn't that big :p
@@KNURKonesur True. It's just a convenient label, like 6x6 isn't really 6cmx6cm.
thanks!
Shooting architecture with this would be amazing!
In answer to your question... YES it will, and does!!
The short answer is YES, It already has.
It doesn't look bigger than a 1Dx or a D850
I couldn't watch the whole video. Memories of my cheap Kievs sealed with electrical tape to control the light bleed . . . The acute pain in my wallet at the thought of how much this one would cost. I want one so bad I'd consider selling a kidney. Great video.
::looks over at my Sony RX100 V & VII:: sniff
It already did.
