Stop Mixing Baking Soda & Vinegar - Laundry Tips

- Please stop mixing vinegar and baking soda when cleaning. While it’s a very fun reaction it completely naturalizes the benefits of both.
Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, is a high pH water softener that should be introduced early in the wash cycle. To achieve this add a tablespoon or two directly into the drum. Baking soda is also an amazing laundry booster that I talk about in other videos!
Vinegar is an acidic low pH chemical that should be introduced late in the wash cycle. Vinegar helps with stain and odor removal along with fabric softening.
When you combine the two they neutralize each other, from a pH perspective, which negates a lot of their benefits. I love both just keep them apart, they’re like fighting kids.

Yes! OMG! Thank you! There's just way too many guides and advisors encouraging mixture of baking soda and vinegar, and I was going mad!
Same here! I don't know why so many don't know basic science lol.
Every time I see a cleaning video where they mix the two I’m like “ok cool so water with extra steps”
Finally somebody stops that useless production of sodium acetate! 👍
Doesn't sodium acetate ( the reaction product) have cleaning properties as well?
@@graftongodofmemes No, none, or so little as to be useless.
You gotta keep'em separated!
*guitar riff starts*
Offspring moment 🎉
Hahaha
Aw, YES! Had to check the comments for my fellow Offspring fans.
Yessssss
Dun, dun dun dun.
I have thought about that every time i see someone say this. This is so true. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid and they absolutely cancel each other out. Im glad you made this video. Ive had this discussion with my wife many times. It just wastes both.
What about using both to clean fruits and vegetables?
@@coffeeowl14 just use one or the other
@tifanyb9436 only do one at a time, otherwise you are just making foam
@@cpu_1292 ok thanks
You are not the only one to think about this!
I've completely stopped buying scent beads, fabric softener, and dryer sheets. I still use laundry soap. It is so much cheaper, my clothes aren't damaging as quckly. All of mh sensitive family members have seen a change for the better in their skin. My towels are super absorbent and fluffy now. Like a good hotel towel. I use my wash stuff exactly like this, 2 wool balls in the dryer.
Same its all a waste of money
Fabric softeners make towels less absorbent because they coat the fibers.
So true..When I stopped using Fabric Softener I noticed my clothes were less faded..I'm not buying it anymore
Is it possible to use too many dryer balls? I used all six and my stuff came out a bit wrinkly.
@@blues03I do 3 but I have used all six and haven’t noticed that problem yet
I've been using vinegar in place of fabric softener for years. It's so good at getting smells out!
WHITE vinegar of course, besides, what little odour there is, soon goes.
Exactly. Vinegar cuts the soap during the rinse cycle and your clothes will be soft. No dryer sheets needed
Don’t use too much soap. An eggcup is enough to break the water pressure.
Vinegar doesn’t reduce static or leave fragrance on clothes. That’s what dryer sheets are for.
@@Ikey04-ge9gy If you have static, you're over drying your clothes.
@wolfe6220 okay but vinegar and dryers sheets don’t do exactly the same thing.
@@Ikey04-ge9gyor just use wool dryer balls
I add a little Dawn soap into my dirty clothes before washing as a stain lifter and gets the sweat stains out, vinegar for the rinse and baking soda in the dryer so my clothes repel cat hair.
Dawn, being a degreaser, will remove any food stains that dont come out with a regular wash.
@@susiex6669 dish soap will help to remove oils and large particles of food, but will not remove any stains left behind. You should use an oxygen bleach for that
THANK YOU! MAJOR pet peeve of mine...either one has good cleaning abilities, but keep apart! Like mixing hot water with ice and expecting something great...
you never tried hot ice? Omg it’s the best, you mix in ice with hot water it tastes so much better than regular water
@@robob3ar lol!
great analogy!
Thank you so much! My intuition would always tell me that both react with each other, hence canceling each other out... So I'm not that crazy!!! 😅
it basically turns into salt water lol
If people paid attention in school perhaps they would know that baking soda and vinegar make salt and water. So you may aswell put a spoon full of salt in the washing. When you separate them the reaction is different because the soda is already washed away
Thank you for this.😮 I honestly thought I was doing something great... turns out I was just doing it extra wrong.😅
Me too
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
People like bubbles, that's why a lot of hand soaps have a added ingredient to make lots of foamy bubbles.
Any time ppl say to mix baking soda and vinegar together for any cleaning, it blows my mind!
I actually use the baking soda in my pre wash compartment and vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.
you are doing a great job!
Do you have to mix it in with water first?
How much of each do you use?
Vinegar is bad for the rubber seals in your washer, and should be used sparingly and infrequently.
What about if you have a top loader?
@@Iceechibi Your washer still has seals that keep the water in.
@@Afro__Joe noted thank you for replying. I like to use a small amount in the rinse cycle for towels, but is there something less harsh I can use to help deodorize towels? I live where it's humid and our towels get a musty smell even if we leave them out to dry when wet.
Baking soda truly works for me and bed bugs hate it
Yeah baking soda works very well. Baking soda MIXED with vinegar is useless. The chemical reaction leaves you with a slightly salty water. It's a basic component being mixed with an acidic component which becomes neutral. Baking soda plus hydrogen peroxide is what you should be doing.
How do you use it for bed?
@@JudyAbbott494you can wash your bedding with it and also sprinkle it on your mattress
If you have bed bugs you should try a very thin layer of diatomaceous earth throughout the house. Unfortunately baking soda alone will not get rid of them completely.
@@maszlagmathat's very dangerous for pets I've heard.
Thank you so much for this.
People mixing them together are just getting a little salt
Uhg!!! New to your channel as of today, and this video was a gut punch! I do this all the time. So happy I saw this.🎊🎉👍
FINALLY, thanks for bringing attention to this, I'm so tired of people spreading misinformation
I’m glad I’ve been using them appropriately lol. You can actually wash fabrics with vinegar and water alone.
Can you mix vinegar and softener or use one thing at a time??
Where should you put the vinegar in the machine drawer?? Please help
But having that strong smell in ur clothes?? Wouldn’t it be terrible?
Would have have been nice to see this BEFORE I did this exact thing 🤦 Thanks for the info
Finally 🙏🏽 someone with scientific reasoning in cleaning processes
OH my word, I greatly appreciate this.
UA-cam University got people doing dumb stuff EVERY SINGLE DAY! 😂
THANKYOU! This has been driving me nuts for years!
Dont use fabric softener. Is unnecessary chemical coating.
Right, but putting the vinegar in the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine will make sure it is released at the right time in the wash cycle, he's not actually saying to use fabric softener in this video
Finally... someone said it out loud for the people in the back 👍
The answer to your cleaning needs is mixing baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. They dont neutralize each other like soda and vinegar. But DO NOT leave them a long time mixed in a closed container like a spray bottle or it could explode. Just spray peroxide on the baking soda and scrub whatever you need to clean. I use them in laundry together also and they work well.
I thought hydrogen peroxide will stain or lighten fabric like bleach does?
@@Mckmeowit definitely would if used on clothing.
@@MckmeowI use 3% on all my clothes as a stain remover and it has never bleached my clothes
That's literally all Oxyclean is, a mixture of sodium carbonate (washing soda) and hydrogen peroxide. It's 15% peroxide by weight.
@@harryw.174Baking soda is different than washing soda...
I needed this! I was so confused before.
THANK YOU!!! They need to stop it in general!! Basically it's an exciting way to make a salt and water
Omigosh, yes! Did these people that push the vinegar/baking soda nonsense not take basic science class in high school ?!!!
Yes, thank you!
EXACTLY!! vinegar helps the clothers get more dry wnd baking soda helps with the smell. People are just crazy
That's why theres Arm and Hammer laundry detergent it's the best for laundry. Love it and now I've found it with added fabric softener. It's inexpensive and laundry is clean and smells fresh.
Or people just may not know. Yall love putting other people down to make yourselves feel " smarter". 😒 Now that's crazy.
Soda Crystals work amazing!
Never knew people used vinegar in laundry. Dishwasher, yes, but never knew washer
Thank you! It has been making me crazy 😅
Pls don't use fabric softeners
Vinegar is a great fabric softener
Fabeeha probably means commercial ones like Downy or Snuggle. They gum up the washer and have toxic forever chemicals that get absorbed into the skin.
A tennis ball in the dryer will speed up drying time, work as fabric softener, lasts forever, and doesn't pollute.
@@fluffytail6355 yeah. We can just put some vinegar on a towel tissue and place it in our storage drawers on top of the washed and dry clothes
@@_fabeeha_ Don't do that
Thank you!!!!!!! Every time I tell someone this they refuse to believe me
And here was me putting everything in after the cycle was done...
Great tip!! Thank you 😊
this answers my ?!! THANK YOU! i can use white vinegar to just rinse the cloth👍🏼
This is great. I roll my eyes every time a see a "just mix vinegar and baking soda" 😂
Oh damn I always put the vinegar in the bleach slot and put softener in the softener slot.
I use it with the regular clothes soap to clean because that foam (which is basically the gas trapped in the reaction) is what helps clean more effectively, THEN rinse it all. And after I've done all that, I put it in the washing machine. Of course I only do this for underwear (not bras) and very hard to clean stains.
An opera house has a longer Ring Cycle than a washing machine, even with vinegar.
THANK YOU! Nobody believes me when I tell them that mixing baking soda and vinegar neutralizes both and is not effective!
Always shocked me how many people did not learn this very basic fact in grade school.
I know i did.
Do you understand how many gallons of vinegar and pounds of baking soda I’ve wasted-
Thank you ❤️
No ones ever told me to do that but it's what I've always done!
Fantastic advice.
This is exactly correct and using simultaneously can also cause spotting on your clothes
The best use for the liquid sodium acetate is salt and vinegar potato chip flavoring.
Great to know, thanks!
And some people get rashes with baking soda! So do a trial on one towel first before using it on all towels. It took weeks and multiple (5×) washings to remove the residual of baking soda to stop the welts and itching on my daughter! It was the baking soda, which can be harsh on sensitive skin.
Makes sense to me. I always wonder what chemical concoction are we making when we use the two to clean the pesticides from produce. I really think we are creating another chemical agent when cleaning the produce.
It makes sodium acetate, which is an effective degreaser and breaks down organic compounds
I thought vinegar also deteriorates the rubbers inside the washing machine
5% acidity buddy
Is 5% acidity or less the safe concentration of vinegar for the rubber seal?
I read that vinegar causes corrosion in the machine…
Probably made by the people that sell you chemical laden soaps and fabric softeners.
That is true. Every acid is corrosive.
Thank u for sharing this. I will do this
Woah, I had no idea you could use both in the same cycle!
Thank you so much!!!
Good stuff 2 know! I wish I had watched your video yesterday when I mixed baking soda and vinegar to wash my stinky ass front loader! I got the idea from a video on YT with over 2 million views!!! That’s the problem with getting your information from a general UA-cam video, lol!
do you recall which creator posted that video?
I use baking soda and vinegar to clean my glass top oven and add a hot water towel to the top of that and leave it. It works.
Why would you even use these raw materials when there are already different kinds of FORMULATED fabric detergent? 💀
Thank you! ❤
Ah yes, basic chemistry
Hmmm, didn't kno this🤔Thank you!
No vinegar in the washer. I used to scoff but it absolutely will wreck your washer. Damaged seals, premature drum rusting nope nope nope
Thank you for the guidance
It doesn't it make your laundry stink
not worse than fabric softener and scent boosters
Good to know
Thank you for the info
I literally hate it when people clean with baking soda and vinegar at the same time you're just scrubbing it with water that reaction makes water
Good to know thanks!
Thank you!!
THANK YOU!!!
Doing this now!!
Did these people not make volcanoes in elementary school
I love you man!!!
Hey how can I clean my dry clean pashminas???
Dont use baking soda, use washing soda. Sodium carbonate is a tougher cleaning agent than sodium bicarbonate.
most sodium bicarb you can buy is technically a mix of the two. Producing just bicarb is a lot more expensive and there is not much difference in the usecase so it's no biggie for most. Pure chemicals can be surprisingly expensive (especially for analysis) and washing soda is more expensive than baking soda by a few factors pretty much for that reason.
@@PLF...You can buy baking soda & decarboxilate it in the oven yourself
@@kt323Wow, O never knew this. On to one of my fave things to do- research. Thanks for this info😊
Ofcourse, all you need to do is spread a layer of soda on a baking sheet and bake it at 250 to 300 degrees for an hour.@@omifunkemccloud3362
Unfortunately a lot of laundry machines in apartments don't have that option dispenser, everything's got to get thrown into the load together 😅 maybe baking soda on the bottom and vinegar on the top 🤷
You basically turn the baking soda and vinegar into water and carbon dioxide (the gas that we exhale when we breathe). No cleaning properties
Thanks!
Hi so how much baking soda do I put in for a load of laundry 🧺? I’m new to this thank you ?🙏🏻
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
This is EXACTLY the information i was looking for. #LaundryLifeSaver you are. lol.😊🙌🙏
THANK YOUUUUU
Thanks for sharing
Oh, thats why soda is so good at reducing heartburn
This is relevant even if you don't use baking soda because powder detergents still have it in it.
👏👏👏so true!
I thought you were going to say "stop mixing vinegar and baking soda for model volcanoes" and i was about ready to throw hands
I don't have a compartment for my fabric softener so I put vinegar in a downy ball and it do what it does during the rinse cycle
Finally someone says it!!!
This keeps my 3 year old white bedding WHITE
I buy washing machine tablet descalers. You're meant to use them in every wash to prevent limescale buildup and is meant to be added to the washing powder section in the drawer.
Do you know if vinegar can help prevent limescale
And also
If the vinegar that's added to the wash might react to the descaler tablets?
THANKS 🎉
Thank you
what I've been wondering is, if we were to submerge an object during the vigorous reaction stage, would it still be deady? I mean, there should be a lot of free energy from the reaction and physical strain on any potentially loose bit
thank you
Will washing soda soften my water? When should i add it to my laundry?
Be careful of baking soda as it may fade the colors of your clothes.
Vinegar eventually ruins the washer's tubing
Thanks 😮
I didn’t know I was supposed to be using them. Cool, cool, cool.
Thank you I'll stop now! 😂😂😂
