- So no one recommended it, but I made an audible this week guys and decided, with all the heavy stuff, we needed a laugh out loud comedy. And thats what this movie is. I grew up with this movie and loved it. Two of the Monty Python guys star in this romp set in Jolly old England, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Jaime Lee Curtis, and Kevin Kline in his Oscar Winning Role, star. Enjoy... we did.
Enjoy my friends.
Also Please check out my short film "Strangers in the Night:" on the Screamfest Homepage you can find it here.

One of the most underrated gags in this is when Cleese's wife is talking to Otto after he stumbles over introducing himself as a CIA agent called Man-fred-gin-sen-son or whatever and then once he stops blathering on about safehouses and KGB defectors she takes charge of the conversation and pronounces his clearly bullshit name perfectly. The way she does it is so great the whole gag almost goes unnoticed, it's brilliantly subtle.
One of my favourite moments as well 😂
Oh yes, she nailed her role!
Yeah i LOVE that, brilliant
Otto thought Buddhism’s central message was “every man for himself”. I love that joke.
Apes read philosophy they just dont understand it 😂 that line kills me every time.
Otto: apes don't read philosophy
Wanda: yes they do they just don't understand it
Sick burn! Love that line
What's funnier about the "Shut up, Portia!", bit is that Portia was played by Cynthia Cleese, John's daughter.
When I was young in the 90's I would watch this film constantly, but it was only much later in my life that I finally realized there was a cameo with a young Stephen Fry! He is not only a fantastic actor, but also a true intellectual (unlike Otto!), and he has done some interesting documentaries over the years.
A Fish Called Wanda is one my all time favourites - folks this is the TEXTBOOK comedy. Absolutely brilliant.
This is one of my favorite comedies. The entire cast was genius with so many of the lines being quotable.
There were criticisms of the film on the grounds that Palin's character made fun of stutters and speech impediments. In fact, Palin himself once had a stutter and was a dedicated supporter (including financially) of treatment for such conditions.
His argument, and I agree, is that anything can be funny, if it's done well.
Kevin Kline is freakin amazing in this film !
He's funny as f!ck , sarcastic , annoying, nosey , awesome performance by him !
No wonder he got an Oscar for this performance !
Holy F*ck what! .... [Google/UA-cam Searching].... ua-cam.com/video/q2Scvtm0MwE/v-deo.html
Damn, that's amazing and well-deserved. Also, the intro with those actors was spot-on and great!
"They are a lot of Brts here tonight. Scary!" This is so in character. Legendary!
What even better is Richard mentions this point in the beginning but brushed it off and did remember he mentions it until I read your comment during the rewatch! I'm gonna Google how many Oscars have been given to Comedic Actors in movies over all. The list is probably painfully small. Especially because I think comedy is linked with musical performance. I only say that because musicals and comedy should be separate works. Also the definition of a comedy should be better defined. Ugh. I'm sorry I've said too much!
For British comedy, there is a 1966 film The Wrong Box with an all-star cast including Michael Caine, Dudley Moore, Nanette Newman, Peter Sellers . . . . . mix-up of box with statue, box with body, coffin, big box of banknotes
Great film. It was directed by Charles Crichton, who also directed the great Ealing Studios comedy, The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) with Alec Guinnes.
Charlie Crichton's directing here is characterized by simplicity and economy. He preferred simple set ups, minimal rehearsal, and single takes whenever possible. He also liked to be done shooting sometime in the late afternoon. Not only was this is preferred style, it was necessary for him given his advanced age and weakened physical health when this was shot. He could only film for a few hours a day because of the pain he was in. He got nominated for an Oscar and DGA award for his directing, which was totally deserved here as he pulled off some really terrific photography. He was a real pro!
This all shows. Quick like novocaine with no wasted energy or product (film/lights/crew energy/time).
Maria Aitkin doesn't get nearly enough love for this role. She's hysterical.
Kevin Kline Wins Supporting Actor: 1989 Oscars for this role.
This and the kind of follow up Fierce Creatures are excellent.
Clockwise with Cleese is fun, its about a teacher who follows time to the extreme but then has it all go wrong on 1 important day.
Clockwise is great !
Fawlty Towers is also a must for any Cleese fan.
Clockwise was great fun, John Cleese was just as bananas in that as he was in this movie :D
Fierce Creatures didn't have the magic this one had.
This really takes me back. I remember seeing this as part of a test audience. The outstanding memory is the shear pain of laughing so hard at the running gag “old lady with dogs” scenes.
I attended the Critic’s screening for this at MGM studios. Place was packed, and everyone was just howling with laughter. I knew it was going to be a big hit that night.
Can't believe this movie is spreading 35 years old. Saw it when it came out with my family...we could not stop laughing.
I have always loved this movie. Klein’s performance is the best 😂
Kevin Kline was hilarious in "i love you to death" with Tracy Uhlman & Keanu Reeves as a dimwit hitman. Funny movie based on a true storry.
Hilarious movie. Great job boys. "Fierce Creatures" is another funny one with the same cast.
Possibly the funniest movie ever made. At least in the top 5, easy.
I wonder how this would've been, if Guy Ritchie directed this. But, this is one of my favorite movies.
Well the pace would have been faster for sure
Portia was played by John Cleese's actual daughter, Cynthia.
Re camerawork.... theres a 'goof' in the scene where wanda visits archie at his office... you can see the camera and cameraman briefly in the mirror!
I take it you know that Cary Grant's real name is Archie Leach.
one of the all time great british comedies and one with a good "sequel" Fierce Creatures same cast different characters
Love seeing your reactions guys... one of my all time favourites
Oh fyi thats Tower Bridge not London Bridge 😉
All amazing actors in this brilliant film, but for me Kevin Klein and Michael Palin stole the show!
Agreed Otto was the best needs a movie of his own maybe set before the events of this movie
30:20 That is Stephen Fry. Hes very famous in the UK. First as a comic sketch actor and then a panel show host called QI - Its Quite Interesting.
“Lord Snot”from the young ones Bambi episode/ w Hugh Laurie and Emma Thomas
Consider reacting to "Fierce Creatures" - it's kinda like a follow up movie, if all main characters got re incarnated into another life. Great comedy!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, possibly you may enjoy exploring some of the Ealing Studio films from the late 1940/50s such as The Ladykillers, Kind hearts and coronets or the Lavender hill mob
I watched Passport to Pimlico recently , another Ealing studio film . It was one of the first major English films done after WW2. It was such an important film that the UK government recently heritage listed a street lamp , that was in the film
In all honesty, when ever I see someone screwing around in traffic, I also do the Otto yell: "asshole!"
the bridge is the Tower Bridge. which spans across the Thames by the Tower of London
Porstia was played by John Cleese's own daughter Cynthia Cleese
there was a follow up movie with same cast but different roles called Fierce Creatures
Guys another film you have to do , if you havent done it already is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Steve Martin and Michael Caine are brilliant as the con men
Not sure if anyone has said, but it was Tower Bridge not London Bridge.
I had not seen this for a long time so it was fun to laugh at it again.
I'm Really Really....F#ck YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!"
My favorite part, Kevin go the Oscar well deserved.
Gentlemen . . . it's John Cleese as in cheese, not Cleese as in geese.
Such a funny film - love it... And that little break of the 4th wall at 30:04 is brilliant, like we are all as surprised as him!
That's Tower Bridge, over the River Thames (Tems) by the way...
Just watched your vid on "This is England" and would highly recommend you watch the rest of them. The character development is brilliant and there are some great story arcs, also the ending is dark af
Probably won’t happen due to the block I regret that but what can you do
Good stuff fellas ..would love to see yours thoughts on the film Dog Soldiers...a great werewolf movie.
Portia btw. was played by John's real daughter.
Do shut up!!!!
Archie Leach was Cary Grant's real name.
the greatest british gangster movie still revered today is the 1971 GET CARTER with Michael Caine, it is also very dark comedy and has michael caine as the mafia badguy travels to a grim town to beat up any gangster that gets in his way as he investigates his brothers murder. finest gangster movie i have ever seen
We have not seen, sorry, I, have not seen the others but we did cover Get Carter (ua-cam.com/video/eLHJJLkdn_c/v-deo.html), really enjoyed this one. We will probably leave Brit Movies for a bit but there is plenty of time to revisit, because my lord, such good cinema!
Archie Leech was Cary Grant's real name.
Good thing he changed it
Stephen Fry. Noticed, anyone?
I like chips, of course, but I must declaim them for the UK. They are probably Belgian, although of course potatoes came from America to Europe.
Chips are British french fries are Belgian actually!
Also, another excellent British film, if you haven't done it already, is "The Lion in Winter" (1968) with Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn.
Lawrence Of Arabia , Zulu, The Man Who Would Be King and The Hill are all brilliant films
Try Michael Caine's 'The Italian Job'.
On the list for sure!
If you guys want to watch another great British movie I’d recommend rise of the footsoldier
Thanks for the recommendation!
What was the middle thing? 😆
Something about the police?
You like tristy turny movies? Try Clue and Sleuth (Olivier, not Jude Law)
Kevin Kline's performance reminds me of an evil Jim Carrey.
Aristole is not Belgian!
19:30 - I can sell you London Bridge if you really like it - I can give you a fantastic deal...
Tower bridge... Over the river Thames...
London bridge is an unremarkable and boring, flat thing, a mile upstream.
So I worked on a documentary about why certain bridges are iconic, I shot some b-roll and did some city sound design/foley. Because of that I got to watch the final before it gets released.
Now that I've done that and seen that, bridges are mad fascinating. First - Third why, how, and the significance of a bridge. Fourth - Fifth why, Funding, and Future upkeep. Most bridges came with no upkeep plans in the original contract other than general city clean-up, big and small. But overall maintenance was rarely in the original contract! This was all American bridges but I'd love to explore this same idea with bridges around the world. They all (Well most, some are built just too well with concrete/rock even today we can duplicate) have an expiration date apparently.
Deleting comments?? What's the point its childish
I didnt delete anything
