Wampler Tumnus Extravaganza | Tumnus Deluxe vs Original Overdrive

  • Although I've had both the original Wampler Tumnus overdrive pedal (v1) and the Tumnus Deluxe overdrive for several years, I've never really compared them closely. Like most of you I just assumed the Deluxe is better in every scenario. But as I listened closely, I realized there's a certain magic with the original that is not easy to replicate with the Deluxe. The Deluxe is much more flexible, and usable in many more scenarios, but there's something about the original that is special. I hope you can hear that in this video.

    Very helpful video. I bought an original Tumnus 2 days ago. Was initially disappointed, but thought, let me try it with the gain all the way down. Made all the difference. Now I love the pedal. Seeing your demo helped me to validate how I'm using the pedal. Thank you !!!

    I have a knackered Squier Strat and no amp, but Lord have mercy, those Tumnus tones just flood my basement. Excellent content good sir!

    The worst thing about the tumnus dlx is discovering you need three of them! I love the chewy mids and range of gain.

    I agree completely! I have both, I like the original the best,

    Fantastic video and great information about the two pedals!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
    I have them both and I agree with you in a lot of things : I use them in my pedalboard with a Pantheon overdrive
    I put the original before the Pantheon as a clean pushing boost or something and the Deluxe after because the EQ is amazing and I can set ut my Gretsch with humbuckers or my Les Paul or my Telecaster and get a balance tone to any guitars or even amps that you can’t with the original and that’s a winner for sure! The original sounds incredible!
    So yes, to have both is phenomenal!!!

    Dude, this is so funny. I'm ten minutes in and you are beat by beat saying EXACTLY what I felt about those two pedals. The settings you had on the original are exactly what I would use with my Strat, and the Deluxe just didn't have that same magic. However, I will say, I do prefer the deluxe when using it as a proper distortion pedal instead of as a boost. Wouldn't surprise me if you say that by the end of the video too!

      @@Texasbluesalley I've never done anything like this before or since, but I actually emailed Brian Wampler and suggested he add a switch that would remove the active EQ controls from of the circuit outright. Nothing ever came of it clearly.

    I think part of the difference is not from the original vs the deluxe but rather the original vs the newer version with the different artwork.

    Great video, very helpful! I originally bought the Deluxe but wasn’t really excited by it. Felt a little dull. Cool to hear the original has some extra airy sparkle (which is what I love about the Klon tone). Gotta try it out!

  • @TunedupFlat
    @TunedupFlat 2 роки тому +1

    I have had both and kept the original. It was that airy sparkle that the original has that I liked. But I do only use it a boost or a clean tone sculpting pedal. If I need drive, I have plenty of other options

    Great video man! I think I’ll be going with the original. Both are great but I agree with the fullness of the original and the way it almost acts like a treble booster in front of the tube screamer type overdrive is fantastic! Thanks for the video!

    I think the original sounds better 🤷‍♂️

      He re-designed the output pot, and there are +/- tolerances to all pots/capacitors/resistors etc... comparing the same exact settings is almost impossible to yeild identical results.
      That said... I think the tones are close enough and the same sound lives in both boxes if you turn the knobs the right way.
      Both sound killer!

    Find the tone you love on regular. Then write down the Deluxe settings that match it. Then sell the regular.

    Wait until you play the Andy Wood Gearbox. It’s a Tumnus and Pinnacle all in one. You can go from slight break up to Van Halen and everything in between.

    • @armurano5093
      @armurano5093 2 роки тому +2

      James Todd if you're addressing that to me, the Wampler Gearbox is 2in1 pedal (pinnacle and tumnus together) so I don't stack that with another tumnus BUT I do stack a Bad Monkey in the middle of the Gearbox for a 5150 on nuclear power.

    I wonder how the Germanium Deluxe would compare to the non-germanium original.

    Texas Blues Alley -
    liked and subscribed - Thanks for the great video - you really show slight differences - many other demos don't... BUT -
    1 - When comparing the Tumnus with the Deluxe - at first - you had a TINY bit more drive on the Deluxe - try it again without that -
    AND - slightly less mids scoop on the Deluxe - which also is why the original sounds better...
    2 - When playing them with the Clarksdale - you had way too much distortion on the Clarksdale - try that again to make a better sound
    without too much distortion on the Clarksdale- and THEN wanting to use both...
    3 - When comparing them later - for a long time - your mids on the Deluxe scooped a TINY bit too much which took away the mid highs a bit too much
    so the rest of the comparisons took away from the Deluxe ! Try it again with a tiny bit more Mids !
    4 - When putting the Deluxe on the Bright setting - you would need to - re adjust the tones so there isn't too much distortion
    THANKS !

    Thanks for the comparison. I've bought Deluxe V1 as I wanted to check it with my gear anyway and my findings are the same. What kind of annoyed me on Deluxe was a little bit more harsh/shrill top end also? Weird. I would even dare to say that Mosky Silver sounds closer to small Wampler in some areas (thicker, middier, though simpler on single notes)

    I still prefer the mini. But I think it's more of a matter of seeing it as different pedals, for different stuff. Also there's so many variables on a complete guitar flowing path that I see drive pedals as filters and enhancers for specific needs..

  • @JJT007hero
    @JJT007hero 2 роки тому

    That was such a good comparison. I loved hearing your detailed opinions on both. I just bought the original and I love it. I just realized there is a deluxe. So I was about to exchange it. Now I’m gonna keep it and look for another drive pedal. I’ve only ever used a big muff for all my dirt needs, set to fuzz. Now I’m over that sound and I want to explore drive pedals. I actually sound better and more proficient when running through lead lines with the tumnus original. Thnx for the great video. I’m using the original T for my solos. Any suggestions on a second drive pedal to add to my board in case I need a bit more? (I use either pure clean or driven, I don’t do the sparkle). I saw a suggestion in the comments I will check it out but wow there are so many drive options.

    This might seem like a silly question so sorry for asking, but if you have the vibroloux why would you also need the torpedo captor x? Does it also act as an interface or just change the sound to that of a twin with jensens? I'm wanting to learn more about this topic, so it's an honest question. Big fan of you're channel man too :)

    • @Texasbluesalley
      @Texasbluesalley  2 роки тому

      Two reasons: first, I want to crank the amp and don't want the volume that comes with that. Second, I don't want to mic a cabinet to record. The Captor X solves both of those problems. It's a loadbox, so I can plug my amp right into it and crank away, and it has an incredible array of virtual cabinets. So I can can monitor at any volume I want, and I have a far greater array of cabinets and mics to choose from than I would with my real cabs and mics.

    • @natalievelasquez2664
      @natalievelasquez2664 2 роки тому

      Oh ok, so it serves as an attenuator and you can "reamp" the vibroloux so to speak? I had a torpedo x for awhile to use with my deluxe reverb, but as a rookie got convinced to sell it because it would "burn though my tubes faster", according to someone I know. I also chickened out with using a speaker cable for the first time, and just using it altogether. I appreciate your time and response by the way.

    • @Texasbluesalley
      @Texasbluesalley  2 роки тому

      @@natalievelasquez2664 It does provide three levels of attenuation if you want to run it into your actual cabinet, but the loadbox functionality makes it perfectly safe to run without any cabinet connected, and just use the virtual cabinet simulation (which you would then monitor on your studio monitor speakers. Running it through all that stuff colors the actual sound of the pedal. More of a demo of your system...
