A few people have bought Settlers 3 after watching this, if you did be sure to run s3setup.exe in the game folder and set resolution. Also u may need to run the desktop shortcut as administrator to avoid the ccd key bug. I will review the game soon :)
I think this game deserves a re-visit.
"a fantastic game that's utterly shite...."
its just fantastic
Sentence worth a Mack.
"I love soup, but there's shit in it"
wai ar jou buy clothes in the soap store ?
You should have thrown in a curve ball and said "you can also build silo's, like you can in that game.....Command & Conquer"
haha
I bought myself a bell too, thanks for being an inspiration.
:)
lol i saw some bells in the shops the other day and had only one thought... "ARE YA ARE YA ARE YA?!?!" DINGDINGDING!
I actually kinda want one too, not that I make reviews, mind. I just want to be able to vent my frustration whenever a particular bugbear of mine creeps too far up my ass for me to stoically withstand the aggravation it causes me.
"I've changed my mind, **** the system" :D
That made my day
what a brilliant way to end the video.
get a life n00b
i can tell you're a n00b because of the way you are
who are you talking to?
you n00b, get some commentiquette along with a life
The whole time-travel hypothesis just set him straight hahahaha
"This game is bad because it's like settlers"
"This game is bad because it isn't like settlers enough"
I agree that S3 was the best Settlers game ever and S2 in second place and I also wish for a worthy successor.
But you shouldn't compare Northgard to the Settlers series, this is a similar game but it's different nonetheless.
What about Banished? A great game, similar to Settlers, but still different enough to be it's own thing.
The land in Northgard and the amount of buildings you can build on each tile, it's just another resource to manage and to fight over.
This game is a lot of fun in multiplayer and very well polished for being in early access.
It's true that the randomness of the map-generation, can make a multiplayergame a bit unbalanced or even completely screw you over. But it also can create great challenges and epic games. If every startzone of every mapwould be surrounded by the same amount of resources, it would become very boring very fast.
I have played it for 44 hours now and i like it a lot.
Every game feels different and especially multiplayer is a blast for a veteran rts/citybuilder/civ/resource management gamer like me :)
I love the part where Mack says, "Like in Settlers".
Love your work Mack
You're welcome?
You're welcome.
great settlers review
Mac: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."
Mack... Mack never changes. And that's why he is awesome!
orestisDisturbed
Mack only changes if it makes him more awesome. In that way, he never changes.
Northgard reminds me a lot of a board game. I don't think it's fair that you compare it so stubbornly to Settlers. They barely share any similarity. I can't tell how deep it is yet, but I liked the challenge of every session I played so far.
Mack, you've got a serious case of the rose-tinted-specs. You always reminisce about old games. They weren't as good as you remember mate. You just remember your life before you got old and burdened with kids and work - and associate that with great times and great games.
I have Settlers 3 and play it quite a bit, last time played was yesterday, it's amazing, sorry :p
Also being playing H&D 1 & 2, Half life 1 and 2, MOHAA and C&C Generals in the last few months, all of them great games, no rose coloured specs in this house just a collection of amazing games.
soundslave Seriously mate, go back and play some of these old classics like Settlers and Half Life and you will instantly see they are far better than their counterparts today. And it's impossible for me to look back nostalgically because I'm only 18 so obviously didn't play these anytime near release.
soundslave A lot of games were better back then. I still think the late 90s and early 2000s were the glory days of gaming.
Not only did you have great games but also great mods or even total conversion mods. Today some games even ban you for trying to mod their games because they want to sell more shitty dlc. Back then mods were great but so were the expansions and despite how good the mods were you felt most expansions were worth it.
Also why aren't games going bigger in scope. BF 1942 for example had 64 player servers and it was a lot of fun. Plus that game had so many great total conversion mods. BF2 had a mod that expanded the amount of players to 128 and it was awesomely chaotic. Fast forward to today and BF doesn't allow mods. I mean real mods not the server restrictions that are called mods now...sigh. They used to encourage it and gave you mod tools and map editors.
When we have LANs we usually are playing older games like Rise of Nations, Dawn of War 1, Age of empires 2 and 3, Company of Heroes 1, Supreme Commander 1, Arma 2 wasteland mod, Left 4 dead 2, Team fortress 2, Counter strike source for the great map mods, CSGO(though I don't like it as much as CSS but my friends enjoy it), Killing floor 1, Insurgency, Command and Conquer Generals and Red Alert 2, Serious Sam series, Goldeneye Source, (trying to get them into Unreal tournament games), etc.
Most of the games we play are old games. Some games we would like to play take too long like Sins of a Solar Empire but don't have the time like we used to.
How come after all this time nothing beats Rise of Nations? That is one of my favorite LAN games.
don't get me started on skins for CSGO... Back in the day you used to download skins for free and just drag and drop them into a skins folder. Now people are paying hundreds to even thousands for the ugliest shittiest skins. What happened to the modern gamer?
Hahahaha Fuck the system xD
Brilliant.
this review falls a bit flat since there's a huge presumption that the viewer has played/knows what settlers is.
No because you can still buy settlers on gog
No kiddo. It does not at all fall flat. Him and other of us old gamers are all as pissed and he's telling you kids that you can and should expect more from the gaming industry for the money you're spending. Or should we say parents money.
Never played settlers and completely understood the review.
As an old gamer I object to your bullshit. A lot of the old games were just shit, but we thought they were amazing since there was literally nothing else like it before. Take off the nostalgia glasses. Other than that, not all games of today are shit. There's a few gems out there even people like you could enjoy, if you took the stick out of your ass and learned to enjoy gaming again.
calo9000 - hilarious. I was away to say grown adults can type Settlers 3 into google...
He has seen old Megg when she was young. We simply can’t comprehend what she looked like back then.
Fuck it i am off to buy and download Settlers3 from gog.com
There is a way to increase the resolution as the default res will probably make you projectile vomit on your screen
In Battle for Middle Earth 2 it works by going to: C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\ and go to the relevant game folder, open up options.ini in notepad, and edit the resolution line to "1920 x 1080", then save.
Likely works this way in Settlers too and if I remember correctly it also works for C&C Generals.
Actually mack it isnt that bad its still extremely playable, btw would love to see you do a lets play of it, theres been nothing like S3 since its release, its such a shame, S3 with a slight graphical upgrade and more bigger maps, more upgrades, and more production lines, would be a massive win for oldies like us nowadays.
All these classic games are tears...in rain.
4:57 After those 3 times "like in setlers" I barelly held my laugh :D
lol same i laughed out loud
Settler´s Lets Play!
Setllers 2 was great, played it many many times. I liked the whole strategy aspect with respect to supply chains. Everything in the game was about efficiency in your supply chain
Its been released maybe worth an update?
The devolution of everything from art to music, movies to video games, it's all regurgitated.
The time travelling analogy is perfect Mack. Thankyou for another great review
Think Settlers 3 is my favorite all time strategy game. Probably even over C&C Red Alert. Played through all the races to the end and wasted so many hours. Its all the little things that make the difference like the sounds of the pick axes hitting the rocks in the mines and animations for even the butcher. When you built up a sizable settlement or a massive Roman Centurion army it really felt busy and alive and sometimes every single soldier mattered. each 1 could make the difference between success and failure. The between mission cartoon cut scenes and storytelling (although slightly mental at times) with the Gods was also highly entertaining and helped pace the game nicely. So good to hear someone talking so positively about that game and agreed its kind of crazy 20 years later we cant better it.
Every new releases of early access games I've seen you are reviewing. That's some good variety.
Agree 100% Settlers was a classic series (before it went 3D). I think it's the developing of the 3D art, sound track, modern sfx, animations and general level of graphical and audio fidelity that the market now demands (i.e. graphics sell) that causes games design to fall on the wayside.
The market has changed, or rather grown. Back in the 90's people like yourself (me included) who played PC games were quite a niche (it was a lot more expensive and less available back then, you needed more technical mindset to be able to even get games up and running, installing OS etc so the audience tended towards tech savvy people with a bit of money spare). Now the market is wide open, and to compete (i.e. get funding, loans etc.) you need to prove you can reach a decent chunk of the market. With a project such as this, it's most likely got some funding behind it even before it went into early access. Imagine pitching a game as complex as Settlers to investors...
Settlers 3 was released at the end of 1998, Mack. In 1996/7 you've definitely been playing Settlers 2, as I have.
... like in Settlers
Amazing wab review again! It''s been said before and I'll say it again; I'm saving alot of money thanks to you, because I agree with you almost always. I started with the C64 in 1983 at the age of four. The devolution is real... Keep up the awesome work that you do =D
Maybe I'll take it when it's fully complete. I cannot trust early access games anymore.
there's roughly 2-3 hours of game-play in this title and it costs 20 dolla.
Imo a good game should have 1:1 ratio dolla per hour minimum.
In contrast.
I've just finished playing M&B:Warband which I bought for 20 dolla and played for 200+ hours.
Give me one incentive to buy a game I would play max 3 hours over a game I played 200 hours (and jizzed all over myself every second of it).
Speedy Von Gofast what about Besiege? player unknown battlegrounds?
Love the ending. Towards the end I was like "thumbing this thing up would go against everything he just said".
I'm reaching the conclusion that I need my own bell when watching these reviews! To be dinged in agreement or outrage depending on the situation.
well you've talked me into buying Settlers 3
Mack you should check out Danny O'Dwyer/NoClip's new documentary, where he interviews few devs behind Spelunky, Braid (& The Witness) on how games used to evoke that sense of mystery, thing that's not happening anymore these days because of all the hand holding, achievements&trophies etc. just glad that the message can spread out more.
Snike Hollow Knight is the answer.
Samus that's an awesome new platformer indeed!
Andy Clifft he used to work there yeah but I've watched plenty takes of him on good old games and some new ones, haven't seen the Horizons one as it's only an exclusive.. sigh lol
Andy Clifft true, ofc I'm referring to some good ones, which are few sadly.. but I guess it'd a good thing in a way.. you discover this gem of a game after a long time and you learn to appreciate it more.
I just watched the documentery (Rediscovering Mystery - Noclip Documentary) and it is completely on pint... But to sum it up, a lot of games have become that annoying idiot that tells you what comes next when watching a movie
This is your best review so far, absolutely loved it. I also love how you are delving back into old classics - I was glued to you playing Half Life 2! I get the feeling we will see C&C Generals after the Halo Wars 2 debacle...
And what debacle was that? Halo Wars 2 is great and is still going strong to this day.
@@SeanUCF It seems the 5 year wait for this reply has caused you to somewhat miss the point.
The debacle refers to how much Mack hated it, specifically how dumbed down it was for consoles. And, as I predicted, he frequently re-visited Generals as that is one of his favourite RTS games.
@@donkeydance5483
I never watched his review of HW2. I was just curious at what sort of debacle you were referring to since I hadn't heard of anything. The Halo Wars series has always been on the lighter side since it was originally built from the ground up for consoles, so anyone should already know that going in.
I quite like this game really! It's far from shit (now it's patched up more and stuff has been added..) If it's shite, well then it's good shite!
But they are going the PAID DLC type thing bro, unlike guys like No Man's Sky or other stuff like EVE Online where most of it are just Free & you don't really need to pay more to get the new stuff
Dude thank you for your reviews, you’re the guy I look for now for an honest no bullshit review on a game to see if it’s worth my $
It's not that the games now are worse than years ago, it's just you and I are getting old Mack. We used to get so excited over games and everything felt new and groundbreaking. Now it's kind of commercialized.
this is the first episode i watch from you. But as one who always compares this genre games with settlers 3... I just want to tell you: I LOVE YOU
The YT quality sucks when you move around. Like, when you pan to another part of the map, it becomes blurred.
I have seen this once before on another channel, think it's caused by a YT setting while uploading or something :S
laughed my ass off every time he whispered "like in settlers..." hahaha epic man
why aren't more people subscribed to this man?. He is our salvation :P.
Great vid, how are the bells?
Early access - never worth a buy
A-fucking-men.
I think it is if its already good, but i can't trust early access :(
veilll have you seen blackwake or subnatica?
8-bit Scenario
It's a matter of a business model. I don't play favorites
veilll That is so true, they can just stop developing a game whenever they want with the only repercussions being community backlash
On another note, if you want to test out another Settlike check out FolkTale, which is of course also in Early Access. You can build anywhere ;)
Okay you got me, I ended up pausing this video in the middle and went to GoG and bought Settlers 3 (I probably have it somewhere, but I couldn't find it and this video has me wanting to play it again!)
Settlers sounds like a fantastically in-depth game. However, not everyone wants to spend 7 hours necessary to play a fantastically in-depth game.
Man, the hours I put into Settlers 3. Cracking game!
Honestly you make me want to get a bell, and do a Worth-a-Buy style review to myself. Gonna go get a bell now, thanks :)
Next video on the devolution of the gaming industry should be about RTS/ base building games.
Hey Worth A Buy im curious, does the bell ring mean something like "New argument" or something?
I thought I might actually be thumbing this video down but you actually surprised me with a thumbs up (I refuse to see the mind change). I really like the game. I agree with pretty much all you said in the video but there is just something about this game that keeps bringing me back. I'm very interested to see where they take it.
You can have a bigger army if you build more training camps. Each camp gives you 3 vikings until it's upgraded and then it gives 5. If your people are starving then bring them back to the town hall and turn them all back into villagers as they will gather food. If you leave them as miners, healers etc then they will not gather food and you will die. Once the Winter is over you can reassign them back to what they were doing before. In regards to befriending the Jotunn you can build more trade buildings and trade more food with them (provided you have enough) and the bar will go quicker.
My biggest issue with the game at the moment is the limit on buildings per zone but if you could build whatever you wanted it would break the game, in its current design. That limit pretty much means that one clan in particular is pretty overpowered compared to the others. The goats :D (Against AI anyway. Players would be different as they could get aggressive early).
GOG just released Hidden and Dangerous 2 keys on the store. Bought one and have to say, I'm not disappointed yet.
Mack loving the amount of content, must be because you love on your own now
I don't think a group of settlers would need a baker to make bread or a butcher to prepare a kill. I think that having access to the grain and animal carcass would really be all they needed. I think a blacksmith would still be needed for ore that had been mined but most food related things would be handled by the household or individuals. Same thing with wells for water, you might need one for a village but I'd expect a group of settlers to be able to find water on their own.
Thank God I watched your video. I thought that this game reminded me of KaM Knights and Merchants from 1998. I thought that with it would be epic. I had hope. I love your videos.
Played Settlers on the Amiga as kid with no knowledge of the English language or things like that but it was still hella fun to play and learn by trial and error. =D
When all buildings burn just press the fire icon on the right edge of the screen to repair all buildings.
DING
Yes, Blue Byte were magicians. Settlers and Battle Isle series just rocked everybody's world and I even liked Anno series. But it's really tough seeing them as being a part of Ubisoft :/
Priceless ending Mack! :) Have you played Gothic 1 or 2 ? Controls are abysmal, still its the best RPG by far.
Ive played the game for about 20 hours, and bored almost 18 hours, i did a review but still i wanted to see if theres somebody else who finds this game too simple for a strategy game and some stupid features like the building limitation per tile. It was a real surprise to find that WAB and i think alike on this game, but ive never played settlers, maybe ill do it after this video.
I've compared this game to Populous 3, and i prefer populous 3 by far, a game where i had a lot of fun all the time, not 99%, not 99.9%, 100% fun time.
Good video and real talk.
Mack what do you think of Cossacks: European Wars (+ expansions)?
Mack, is there a website where I could buy settlers 3? It sounds good
110% AGREE WITH ALL WHICH YOU SAID. It's sad that no-one can do a good game, and everyone is releasing empty, shitty games. This is so close to be good, but still it have too far work ahead.
Hi Mack!
Is there a Bunny Bell vid coming up? That shit was so funny :')
has it become better since then?
Hey Mack, will you be doing a review for Torment: Tides of Numenera?
so how is this like settlers?
Great video ! One more time you have spoken the truth ! Thank you for what you are doing ! All the best :)
I trust Mack on this, He's... seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
Like in Settlers....
2:19 hahaa the best ding! ever
So how does this do in comparison with Settlers 7?
Is Settlers 3 on Steam? If not, where can I find it?
I'm playing it now and I'm loving the heck out of it
I actually enjoyed Settlers 7! Brings back alot of the stuff we loved from Settlers 2/3 along with great graphics.. It was the whole DRM controversy that killed it.. I'd recommend S7 without hesitation.
Great video again, I was just too young for Settlers 3, any chance you would do a play through or comparison video? Devolution of the game industry - RTS maybe? Even just a comparison video of you playing a really old game and then doing something in the newer games would really help some people actually get a clue and realise that they are being taken for a ride. I saw Sniper Elite 4 facebook page today promote a post and the amount of people loving the game because of its "great graphics and big open world - so much fun 10/10" was infuriating. No one even noticed the shit AI and awful xray vision.
Hey Mac can you do the GWENT card game is it worth a play? It's currently in Beta. (They've developed the in-game mini game from the Witcher 3)...PS: Now I have the urge to play my settler games -.-
Are you gonna do a review of the They Shall Not Pass DLC of Battlefield 1 when it's coming out in march? :)
Playing it on ORigin - simply a virtual version of KATAN box game, imo. what do you think?
Hey Mac, just wanted to say, personally I like your videos today a lot more than your videos a couple of months ago. Not sure what, if anything at all changed but algood anyway, thanks for uploading!
I remember when the settlers 3 came out.... good old days... worth a remember!
these guys are trying to make the game you want. you need to support them. great game
Hey mack can you link this settlers 3 game you keep talking about.
lol, 1996 is when I was born! I still play games that are older than me though.
hilarious from start to finish.
Mack, please do settlers 3!!! would love to watch that... Right with you too, the Settlers games were amazing
Mack turned an acronym into a verb!
Mack, you should do a video of your top favorite 50 games of all time!
I'm a console casul, and we just don't get many decent world builders and strategy games. And you're right about old games versus new; for the most part, new games are just _terrible,_ so with that in mind, I'll think I'll grab me a pizza and drop a few quid on this for a bit of fun.
Hahaha I love your reviews! Spot on. So much potential in this game, but it's way too shallow at the moment.
Feels like it has suffered the Simcity remake problem. Restricting game areas to zones. World building game, ONLY WHERE WE SAY YOU CAN. Yeah no.
Cheers for the review Mack!
Mack is definitely my most respected reviewer.
11:09 I thought that was going to turn into a Blade Runner quote :P.
Mack should do a worthabuy for older games like CNC generals and settlers 3
literally looking for my copy of settlers 3 as this plays
YES CHANGED HIS MIND! The most epic ending!
Reminds me of that old game Settlers.
It's not, it's really limited compared to settlers.
If you play settlers then you play this game, you just feel like a bird in a cage.
I'm kind of surprised this isn't as good as an objectively better older game..
