I gave this the middle thumb due to the custom maps being brilliant, it allows you to play as many different maps as you like, UNLIKE the devs game where most of you will not beat the first survival map or want to even progress through the campaign of boredom.
This game is literally brilliant in concept and I love playing it (custom maps) everything else is garbage imo so it's only really worth buying for the custom maps.

Great review and you hit the nail squarely on the head with pretty much everything. I don't think the campaign was what most people were expecting and the developers refused to let people play test it and give feedback on it during its development. Now they have to pay the price of that. They can tweak the campaign all they want, but it's difficult to address all of its problems without completely starting over from scratch. All the hard work they put into the main campaign has produced something that plays like a unrewarding boring hobbled version of the other modes. What a shame.

Love the videos but this is one of the very few times I disagree with you. I am loving the campaign, I like the variety with hero missions, swarms, horde types and the ones where you clear them on the road,etc..
Its not perfect but I am liking it alot more than I expected. I didn't find the first level to be hard at all, and this is coming from someone who could only beat one of the horde mode levels during Early Access, the campaign though I have already beat 13 levels. So far I am finding the campaign not to hard at all. Keep the great content coming dude.

Mac is a build wide not tall sort of reviewer, let's put it that way. He's incredibly prolific but a lot of his reviews end up being shallower than rat shit in a puddle as a result. He'll play like five hours of the game max and then base his entire review around that, which as he admits depending on the game is basically browsing the options and character creation menu (i.e. 4x games).
Look I get he doesn't have enough time to play a real 4x game, not even as a job, because who does. Some games you can get away with that, often the awful triple A shit. But there's certain times where it's just so incredibly, painfully obvious to me he played it for a few hours and basically wrote a review for a 20-40 hour game based on a >2 hour return window.
I think the greatest irony is my immediate first impression of the game was not muh tents, but the fact I physically cringed IRL at the writing and voice acting. I mean my god, it was involuntary I felt my whole body cringe which to be fair the devs provided me with a new and unique experience that way. It's too bad to be believed. I took one look at it and was like "yup, this guy watches anime and as an adult no less" it was just that bad.
Gameplay-wise OP, i.e. Mac, loves bitching about it which is a truly fair thing to bitch about the checkpoints never pointing out you can bypass this by just locating the save file and copying it. I have manual manual saves from all my games pulling this shit on me. Why? Because I don't trust everything not to crash or corrupt data or whatever. Sometimes I'll "reload" but usually it's a basic precautionary measure even in roguelikes in case the save gets fucking corrupted. I can tell I'll be tabbing out and ctrl+c my file manually a lot in this game, because if I want ironman I'll play fucking ironman.
Point is, I laughed before, but even after just half an hour I can see this game being fun, and it's not the first time he did that. Mac, point out you didn't play through the feckin thing. At least sometimes he'll make a point to say "me and me gf played for 10 hours" "I only could get through X hours" and so on. When I go to textwall on Steam I generally try and wait til I actually beat it. If I did not but put a review anyway, usually because already I think it's too awesome not to recommend anyway, I try to make a point of saying I didn't finish it. This whole review just feels like he got butthurt because he didn't tab out and copy and duplicate the save file. I question if OP is the sort of person easy to tilt in an online game.

I always appreciated how you always pit a games quality vs the actual price it is being sold for, hence the channel title. But actually visualizing the value of the gameplay assuming we all work a hard 8 hours a day at least, and what we should expect from trying to relax for a couple hours and what we might get out of that is super helpful and just awesome. I've always loved how you always look at the value for the customer above all else.
Also love the tag at the end lol "most players won't see half the content". First thing I thought is wow 60 hours is a little long for a campaign in a game like this. Why overstay your welcome so much just to pad the game out with all this bullshit to make it that long? Reduce it down to just the very best parts and have an amazing 15 hour campaign of ridiculously edge of your seat action.

I don't know what that is but as I've said elsewhere, I developed the neurotic habit of manually saving by making copies of the autosave file and just renaming it like theyareb.sav in they are billions save 2 folder or whatever. I'm so incredibly used to jank and losing whole essays due to computer crashing/corruption or bugs or corrupted saves it's reflexive at this point. Yes I have Darkest Dungeon campaign on literally two separate drives like that. I played XCOM2 like that
      >b-b-but muh 1337 gaymer gitgud hardco
Yeah and guess what it was completely worth it because a bug killed like 16 hours worth of an ironman. There is nothing more infuriating than losing the game to a corrupted save or bug in an autosave game.
Had mac simply done that he'd not be bitching for ten minutes about how a zombie he didn't see snuck in and rekt him. OP got pwned by a stealth zombie. Pretty realistic imho, makes it more likeable to me.
What does NOT make it likeable to me is I fucking hate fast zombies in any media. It'd be better if they just set your dudes on a timer to turn, maybe gave you the opportunity to exile them or execute them like I dunno EVERY ZOMBIE SHOW EVER?. Maybe have a RNG dice roll to see on a villager trying to hide it from you. There's tons of different things devs could have done but instead we get the absolutely retarded Hollywood War Z shitshow of cringe and failure of instant zombies. Even Swarm the City, while being clearly phoneshit, has a 1HP/sec countdown to turning to zombies. It's the fact they stupidly made it like that on top of the tedious lack of saves all of which is on top of some of the worst, most laughable writing/voice acting I've seen since Shadowrun Dragonfall.
It's a crater lad, it's a fuckin crater! Like wtf, is this weeb shitty 40K rip off of the autistic Germans with their "Unified German Empire" after uniting under Bismarck or something? It's not even a citystate. It's like this one village in a crater and the guy starts talking like anime mixed with the emprah of 40K which makes zero fucking sense in the context of the game and some of the worst voice acting I've seen in a long time I mean goddamn son
But otherwise, I thought this game had lots of potential and I had a bit of fun the first half hour. I realized after rewatching Mac's review my instincts were apparently right to be super paranoid about exploring/expanding though I didn't expand fast enough and got rekt by a scripted wave. Literally just duplicate the file and copy paste into a backup folder, boom now you have manual saving + insurance against corrupted saves. The art style is itself pretty decent, but I can tell the gameplay is likely the best part of the game if you get over being butthurt for ten minutes because a zombie did what zombies do and you didn't mace a manual save.

  • @KarEssMoua
    @KarEssMoua 5 років тому +2

Hi all of you and hi @Worth A Buy !
My name is KarEssMoua and I'm the creator of the Leyba' campaign in They Are Billions. I would like to share my point of view for people who haven't buy this game (and also those who already have it).
TAB (They Are Billions), is my favorite RTS game. I have spent more than 1 000 hours on it (especially on the editor). This game is a REALLY good game and also VERY hard. The community is one of the best I have ever seen, and the devs are listening to us to improve the game.
    BUT
Actually, what you have said about the campaign is true.
    1) The campaign is quite unbalanced in some points, and the devs are already working on balancing stuff. I agree this is not enough, but still, they are working hard on it. As a map creator, I can tell you that balancing a game is a pain in the a** as everyone doesn't play at the same level.
    2) Yes the missions are repetitive, and I am disappointed as much as you. The lore is lacking (imo) and the gameplay still the same BUT there are 3 different types of mission : Tactical missions, where you play a hero that discovers a new area. Swarm missions, where you have to settle defenses and units in order to hold and clear a path to advance to the next mission and the Building missions where you have to build your own colony. The devs made a huge work on the map design that is clearly well made. All the campaign is lacking is a bit more advanced script to improve the gameplay as we already have seen with several custom maps, like trading with other colonies, hope, and other cool stuff. The thing is, the devs didn't want to take risk on advanced scripts, and that's for me a mistake.
    3) The lore of the campaign is basic yes, but new players who haven't play any custom map might like it as they didn't play any other custom campaigns.
    4) I disagree with you with the tech tree. It gives new possibilities of gameplay, but sadly the difficulty is highly related on your research, so one mistake and you cannot play all the mission on brutal (I'm playing on brutal and swarm missions are just impossible to beat as I didn't pick up the "right" researches).
About the game and the community :
The game is rich in terms of maps as there a LOT of custom maps that are enjoyable, and imo, havemore interesting gameplay than the campaign. People are also very nice with you and can give you tips on the game.
The game is beautiful and nicely designed, more assets will come later as the devs are balancing the campaign. But still, if you want to know if the game is worth to buy I would give you a honest answer.
If you want a game that challenges you, go for it. Sometimes it's fustrating (especially on survival maps), BUT you have an objective to reach and you know if you don't pay attention, you gonna restart to 0 and that makes you nervous and focus on the game.
So... Should you buy it ?
    YES, do it !

Agree with everything sadly. I was at something like 24% in the campaign (300%, brutal diff) and despite being able to beat it till that point, i was bored to tears to the point that ive just not gone back to it and instead uninstalled. Every single mission was spam tents, spam food building, now you need energy, get a couple more mills, now spam more tents (or cottages, whatever), now build towers/ballistas/stakes and maybe think about defending....but don't forget to spam tents because most the "campaign" is nothing but meeting some silly population goal (in X days) for no apparent reason. And the swarm missions inbetween were so mind numbingly boring that you could just afk for the next 10 minutes. Hard Pass.

I second this. I find the campaign highly repetitive and I wouldn't even mind it if it at least had a single checkpoint throuoght the game. A single zombie can wreck your whole colony regardless of how many soldiers you have - one mistake, few seconds and you need to start the map over including the first super repetitive 15 minutes of the game. If only there was a checkpoint after that so you can restart from this point, the game would be much more playable. I really want to love the campaign, but it's just critically flawed.

The tech tree is garbage. Frankly even missions with heroes can screw you because you can miss tech points that can save your butt for "horribly" hard missions. The only good thing : you can reduce the difficulty during the campaing...

Totally agree with you there Mac.
Been waiting for the full game to come out for ages and feel a bit let down with the full game.
Like you said, its boring and monotonous.
Whats worse is that if you're busy sorting something out like a small wave of zombies or clearing areas out and your not paying attention to your base 1 F****G zombie manages to stumble into your tents you're f****d as it'll take it down withing 2 or 3 seconds and then from there it snowballs and you have to start all over again.
I thought the hero section would be a nice break but its so BORING!
Literally going from object to object to see if its an item is mind numbing. on the second hero mission i spent 45 minutes doing it.
15 minutes doing the actual mission and 30 minutes going from room to f*****g room checking everything!!!
I haven't gotten too far in the game and am hoping for new units and new enemies but i'm not holding my breath.
If anyone is looking to get this game i'd hold off and wait for a sale.
it's not a bad game as such.
It's just that its so BORING.
It's not really that hard but its been designed to be a dick.
Your tents will get hit by 1 zombie that you had no idea was there and unless you've got soldiers there you're boned.

Really really wish I had seen your review BEFORE I bought this game after specifically waiting for a Campaign. Liked it for all of a couple hours before I got to the 'fishing town' just a couple missions in. Did pretty darn good right up until I get to the third and presumably final horde. Warning they are coming from the East! Okay! Move all my troops to the East. BAM! Four separate hordes from both East AND West without the slightest bit of warning, some 1-2 hours of 'play' completely negated in a split second. Uninstalled. Here's hoping things improve one day but I'm not holding out any hope at this point. Played a total of 9 hours, kept restarting to try both Hero Units. So no refund for me.

I love the game, survival gives you a random map which always gives you a new challenge, but i also expected more sophisticated objectives in the campaign missions, instead of just building up a city from the ground up everytime, same goes for the hero missions, they are so slowpaced and also lack more sophisticated objkectives.
Like you said Map Editor is the best part you can create literally anything you imagine and let players play it. Also the game is highly moddable, you can create texture packs, soundpacks and modify gamefiles to change unit stats etc. Modding is not officially supported, yet, but that will open up a whole new avenue then.

Hey Mack, when you were talking about the game not being hard, were you talking specifically about campaign? Because I agree with you there, the normal gamemode is very hard tho, it's not just building tents there.
I only played a single campaign mission so far and quit because it was so boring, the thing is I think they made the campaign for new players, so they slowly get introduced to units/buildings/waves. I have 80 hours in the normal modes and those are very hard (even on the lowest difficulty it took me like 5 tries to get my first win). So because the game doesn't have a tutorial I found the first 10 hours or so very difficult, I didn't know to keep space in my housing area for a market/bank. Didn't know when to expand or when the first waves came etc. so I think the campaign sort of acts like a tutorial.

    • @HRRRRRDRRRRR
      @HRRRRRDRRRRR 5 років тому +2

Except the ways in which you fail haven't changed from survival, they've just given new players less ways to deal with them. The campaign has no tutorial, it's just gimping players. The second/third mission is to take on bloody Villages of Doom with nothing but archers and absolutely no indicator of how fucked you're going to get unless you approach it with a lot of archers, very slowly.

What exactly have we seen added to the game that isn't just different maps with different triggered events and some new units? The actual game is unchanged since it hit EA, it's like we're dealing with a slowly developed WC3 mod.

How do your criticisms differ from the gameplay of survival mode which you like, I don't get it. This is the game, what did people expect from the campaign exactly? If you hate restarting so much you can always savescum, the saves are in My Documents, they just don't want to put it natively in the game, who cares? Also you can get cottages researched from literally the second mission, why aren't you doing that? You are getting less important upgrades and not cottages even though the thing you hate the most is building dozens of tents? Wtf? I agree that the campaign is a bit unwelcoming for new players, but everyone who has played this even for a little bit before will get cottages and farms immediately from the tech tree, and they make all the missions so much easier. Do you need your hand held suddenly? A game requires 10 seconds of thinking and it's shit... Alright then..

Just saying a personal opinion/experience down here in case anyone interested.
Tbh the game is good and I tried it personally but I can say it might not be the right cup of tea for all gamers, basically, gamers that are more in strategic games will adore it but then till now... no further big updates were released which kinda makes the game just repetitive and boring as you said '' tents, army, survive" However, the game is interesting as it gives you the feeling of zombies are billions just attacking/surrounding you from everywhere and challenging once you play harder levels such as 500% or 800% where you need to plan upon the given map and play it carefully cause a dumb move can make you lose everything which sounds ridiculous but that's the challenging part in the game where you're the person who defeats the zombies and survives! Yeah can be disappointing or like frustrating but if you have the patience and courage to try again and again and again till you defeat them then the game starts to be addictive from this point. Suggest people who are looking forward to playing the game or already own it to try out custom maps and specially mention 'campaigns' where you at least get some sort of new/different objectives or story to complete out rather than just leaving the game and not have fun. The overall is the game is amazing, speaking of a personal experience officially but my only thing which I'm annoyed about is it's the price placed considering that the developers of the game don't update it with new things to experience or shine the game out.
Drop a like out if you agree with me!

What I mean is, on most defence type game there is a progressive difficulty, you start on 1 at the begging of the game and it starts to go up until peek difficulty is reached (10) . On they are billions we start on 1 and stay on 1 for 99% of the game until the horde comes and fucks you up. these difficulty spikes are really annoying and it was t something I hoped they fix on 1.0

Eh, I usually always agree with WAB reviews but this time... If I'm gonna do the - ''basically same'' - skirmish maps anyways, I might as well do it in a campaign setting. I bet it would have been alot easier for the devs of this game to skip the campaign portion (like a lot of developers do nowadays) and just go for a basic skirmish/battle royale (whatchamacallit) mode for the entire game. But they didn't. They added storyline elements, characters, and missions. And I personally & humbly appreciate it. PS! But ofcourse I enjoyed the review anyways, as I always do with WAB :)

Some of the things you talk about as negative is also a core feature of the custom maps (like 1 zombie which enters your colony). I greatly enjoy this (not when losing) but it enhances the fact that you constantly need to pay attention, Starcraft does this to an extreme degree, and you will regret it when your player opponent (not computer mind you) has killed your entire mineral line because you didn't notice.
Some things, I dont like about the campaign. The missions (with the hero) are very grindy and I would like to bring him/her in the base building misions also.
I infact enjoy the "rogue-like" gameplay of this game - no saves, no skilltree regrets. And yes I did have to restart the skilltree because I did a few crappy choices.

  • @MrNuclearturtle

I dont see why the didn't do something like Anno 1404 campaign, a campaign mode from 2009 which is often forgotten about. Smaller missions with smaller parameters that increase with size each mission. So whilst theres a general goal you work towards to finish the chapter ie build a chapel, build a fleet of ships, theres several other objectives that you can complete, and if you meet those requirements you get more objectives with greater rewards and the like. And each chapter doesn't really force you to start from scratch, theres a template of a city/settlement you work off from or the same settlement carries on over from the previous, so you dont have to wack in 100's of tents every level. Id rather have a 12-20 campagin than a 60 hour filler one. They couldve had it where each mission forces you to link up with other surviving colonies with cargo trains, where one settlement you built from a mission could be its own self sustaining city in a later level. Such a waste....

Ironman is a great idea for XCOM games because it forces you to REALLY do your risk-assessment and decide what potential rewards are worth how much exposure of your invaluable units.
But in a build-up strategy game where the "Early game" is THIS limited? That's just straightup not a good match for the mechanic.

  • @mancamiatipoola
    @mancamiatipoola 3 роки тому

I played this game when there was only the skirmish mode and it was fun for a bit. But even in that mode the game felt like it was bare bones as a city builder and too frustrating for a rogue-like strategy. I played it for a few days then dropped it because i just could not stand the early game. It is a shame that they didn't make an interesting campaign because this game has such a nice theme and look. Even with written dialogue and it would have been interesting if they had bothered to make a story for each campaign mission. I guess the devs really didn;t think it through. They had a good gameplay mechanic but they failed to make some actual decent content to build upon that gameplay...
Shit, even Plants vs Zombies had a story mate.... Fucking PVZ has a better story than this!
