I am unfortunately one woman in that very low statistic (.10%) of a neonatal death right after labor in the hospital. I am planning a home birth this time, due in August but fear is definitely a challenge. Knowing that my care team failed me even with constant fetal monitoring... I fear something going wrong again. My baby girl passed away due to chorioamnionitis 4 hours after birth. I was group b negative, no complications during pregnancy until labor began at full term. Clear amniotic fluid. I had a normal labor until about half way through when my CNM kept trying to rush my labor with pitocin. I couldnt take the pain and told them no more but they INCREASED it and I gave in to an epidural. Then, I got a fever and nurses rushed in to get it under control. I felt like I was left alone forever. The next time I remember seeing my midwife I told her I felt pressure... I maybe felt I needed to push... she checked me and said I was very swollen down there and going backwards in dilation and she wanted a c-section. I agreed but had to wait about another hour before a doctor arrived at the hosp. To deliver me. When baby came out they said "meconium" and took her out. She did not cry. Husband was taken away. I cried. God conforted me and gave me strength. He was aware she was going to die. I knew it too. Apgar score was a 1. Before anyone explained anything to us they made us make the decision to intubate her. We agreed. Then we knew shortly after there was no hope of recovery because her blood was acidic. She had gone septic. She was never responsive. I guess I just needed to share that... I couldn't forgive myself if something happened and it was my fault because I chose intermittent monitoring. I truly wish I could have continuous monitoring at home... it might ease my fears. I now know my baby girl had late heart decelerations but my husband and I were not told any of this. In hindsight, I wish I could've gotten the c-section a lot sooner.

I’m so sorry to hear all of this 💔I can’t imagine the heartache you must be experiencing. Thank you for sharing your story as it may impact someone else watching this video.
I’m so sorry that you felt so poorly informed and left out of the whole process-that must’ve felt terrible for you and your husband.
Prayers for a much different experience for your next birth and a healthy mom AND baby. I would highly recommend seeking out professional counseling as you prepare for your upcoming birth given all the trauma surrounding your last birth. Having mind, body, and spirit in a positive place can make such a difference on your birth experience.
Again, I’m so sorry for your loss and pray for comfort and healing!

Thanks Jane! Home birth is something that has gotten a bad rap because often we only hear about horror stories, but truly for low risk pregnancies they’re another great option for expecting moms! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

I think you should draw distinction between midwife attended, doula only, and "free birthing" home births. Having a certified midwife is an excellent way to improve the safety of homebirths but none of your data comments on the safety of homebirths without midwifes present. You could unintentionally be supporting non-midwife supported homebirth by not clarifying this.

Can your sources in future videos so people can reference them?

Love the suggestion, I do try to do that, but must have overlooked it in this video. Was there anything specific I can track down the source for?

I had a homebirth and had this heavy bleeding after birth, got the medication from the midwife and went with emergency to the hospital, are there higher risks to hav it again next time ?

Great question! I would ask your midwife this question as well, but from the research I’ve done-yes, having a history of postpartum hemorrhage does increase your risk for future hemorrhages.
