    VIDEO SUMMARY:
    --------------------
Join career expert and award-winning author Andrew LaCivita as he shares his top 5 questions to ask in a job interview!
    1. Based on the direction of the company, what do you think will be your greatest accomplishments in the next three years?
Organizations need to be able to think at least three to five years into the future. But, you don't want to join an organization that only thinks about the future. Thinking is nice, but companies that act and build things and have clarity around specifically what they're going to do are worthy of you. Join them.
It's a great question because it helps you understand whether they have a vision and if they have clarity regarding specifically what they want to build.
Questions two, three, and four are about you and your role…
    2. What are the qualities of people who are most successful in this position?
You're looking for the traits the employer wants. The reason it’s a great question is you’ll get the actual traits they’re evaluating and you can use that insight immediately to highlight how you and your background and experience match those traits! Plus, it’s a great setup question for the next one.
    3. If you were to give me an offer and I was to accept it, one year from now, what will I have done specifically that you would consider this hire to be a raging success?
It gives you clarity to make sure you could actually achieve those objectives. And, it gives you ammunition to use within that interview or subsequent interviews to talk about exactly how you’ll accomplish what they consider a success.
You now know their (year-end) goal is. Get them to envision you completing it for them.
Boom. This one wins the interview even though you’re not done yet. Let’s pile on a bit…
    4. If you were to give me an offer and I was to accept it, within one week of starting this job, what will be my biggest surprise?
This is a little safety net for you. You want to make sure you're uncovering information you might not have uncovered with the questions you've designed.
It gets the interviewer thinking hmmm, what might this person not ask in the job interview I could share or what surprised me when I first started with the company?
    5. What's your management style and what are your expectations of the position you might not have already mentioned?

I once asked a panel a question about what the organization looks for when they consider which employees will be promoted. The panel described a "merit based" promotion system where all candidates would be placed into an appropriate journeyman program after 'x' years. I explained that I understood that because it was outlined in some of the material in the job description and asked if there was any way to accelerate this process with superior performance reviews etc. They basically said no. So I said, if I have a perfect track record and my performance consistently exceeds expectations, I would receive the same advancement as someone who calls in sick 3 times a month and does the bare minimum? The panel froze and gawked at each other for a second before reciting the EXACT SAME MERIT SYSTEM AGAIN!
If I wasn't in a room with them I would swear I was talking to an automated voice recording.
Anyways, thanks for all the help. Keep it up.

Question number 6: what was it in my application that made you select me for this interview?
that way the interviewer will start pointing out some of the positive things in your application, and by pointing them out to you, he is also pointing it out to himself, and therefor already seeing you in a more positive light.
(english isn't my first language, so I hope my point is clear enough)

Wait, this video is 6 years old and I just used these tips today and had my interview and the VP and Director who interviewed me were blown away at the questions and their forward focus. It shows you plan to be there a long time. He said he has 1 more interview but then I got a tour of the facility and the director went around showing everything to me and how I'll love it there. I think I got the job!

So I just completed a Zoom interview with a prospective employer. These questions are gold! I was interviewing for a Journeyman Trade position, with a smaller family owned business. I found a bit of joy turning the tables on the owner when I asked these simple questions. I gained a lot of valuable information about the company, the biggest being, management style. I now have secured a second interview in person next week. Thank You Andrew!

Andy, I’m preparing for my first interview for a Director position in finance. As you say, I look good on paper since I have the first interview (which is by phone). I know there are some gaps from their ‘wish list’ in the job listing compared to my own experience. The biggest being lack of direct people management experience, although I’ve certainly had to manage people indirectly to accomplish what I have to date. I’ve been power-watching your videos and have been pleased to find a wealth of relevant information, tips, insights, advice, etc to help me get ready. Still pretty nervous on my end but I am immensely better prepared because of you. Thank you for all that you do :)

Great tips, I love them all. I've been asking 4 of these in some form recently. There's one more I'd like to suggest you add next time you re-do this video. It's based on Robert Cialdini's (Google him) newer book Pre-Suasion.
“I wonder if you could answer something for me. Why did you invite me here today? What was it about my resume that attracted you to my candidacy?” I shorten it to “What about my resume caught your attention enough to ask me here today.”
Both of these questions put (and perhaps locks) the interviewer in a positive frame of mind when thinking about you. Cialdini recommends working it in prior to the interview starting. (I've held off to the end.)
One interviewer said “that's an excel question, I've never been asked that before. ” I have a 3rd round interview with the company tomorrow.

Your recommendations are a gold value! My favorite question- What could surprise me in the company during the 1st month of my employment! The interviewers were stuck for a while, praised me for the interesting question and answered after hesitation. They definitely remembered me and i am now in the final 3rd round of interview. I just came back to this video bc I had to leave a comment. I got the job bc of watching so many or your videos on how to interview. It has helped me a lot. I’m a veteran that got out in 2012. I interviewed terrible at my last three jobs. But they loved me bc of my military and skills I have. They understood at my previous jobs I was definitely never taught how to interview. I froze up a lot. Now come to 2019 I had interviewed and got the job bc a supervisor knew my work ethic at my previous job. But almost did not get it bc I interviewed so bad. Now I am getting laid off due to covid. I have watched a lot of videos and studied a lot of your material. It helped me tremendously. Idk why I didn’t look it up before. The questions I asked at the end were, what qualities or traits does someone need to be successful in this role? What opportunities are there for advancement? Last one dealt with shift work. But at the end of the interview I thanked them for their time and really look forward to hearing back from them. They then said we will contact you in a week or two with the next steps. Which made me think I got the job. After 7 business days I got the email. I just want to say this stuff works. It helped me a lot. I really appreciate you taking the time for us to teach us. I know I said a lot but I jus want to show my appreciation

I got the job for my internship and it's all because of these questions, before I would answer their questions with detail and they would love my answers but I wouldn't think of good questions to ask, then I used these and they just wanted to hear more, I told them that I was sorry that the time of the interview had passed it's limit and they said they were ok with it because they had nothing after it and they wanted me to ask more of the questions that I had. Thank you so much this might have just changed my career options after college because now I would actually have experience. Thanks again!

    Andy,
Great advice as in all your videos... but about these 5 questions to ask, If the interviewer is with a “professional” recruiter for a company they probably won’t have accurate answers as if the interviewer was with the company.
What would be some questions to ask to an interviewer ‘filtering out’ potential applicants in behalf of a company?

I have a question, we usually get to ask questions towards the end of the interview, or when interviewers are done with asking us questions and cue us to ask questions. So how do we combine the answers for questions 2 and 3 with our stories during that same interview?

Hi Andrew, I have been called in for a second interview tomorrow and I've been watching your videos to help me prepare.
Company I've applied to is a well reputable organisation in UK and internationally, therefore first question about where they see themselves in 3 years won't be justifiable, n my opinion.
What other question can I ask them?

Plus, you all help me understand what you need so I can provide additional insight into future videos. Speaking of, are there any issues you're struggling with that you need some deeper levels of help?? Perhaps I could shoot a video or already have (I could point you to)!

Andrew LaCivita Hi Andrew. I went to school for environmental science and am applying for a position at a North American firm (Stantec). In the second part of the cover letter I'm trying to let them know that I've done some research on them, appreciate their work and am interested in a position with them. I just cannot formulate the right words for it at this point! If you could help this would be greatly appreciated

    • @andylacivita
      @andylacivita  7 років тому +1

Mackenzie, simply let them know your research on them has led you to discover [insert whatever here] and that has inspired you to pursue employment with them!

Andrew LaCivita hi Andrew. Thanks. I've worked on two cover letters for the job so far and I am going to send them to a close friend to review tonight. The one thing I find about employers and hr mangers is that "what works for one does not work for all" even though the jobs you may be applying for are similar. Thank you for all of your tips!

I definitely like question #5 (what will be my biggest surprise if I'm selected for the position). NO employer voluntarily divulges a position's shortcomings (or the company's for that matter) or what their actual intentions are for the successful candidate without some prompting.

These are great questions to ask and I can’t wait to ask them when the opportunity comes. When do I ask these questions? Typically questions come at the end of the interview.Am I mistaken?
When I conducted interviews to new hires, I would ask them if they have any questions before we start. Typically they had no questions. If I am given that opportunity, is it OK to ask these five questions before the interview even begins?
