Difficulty with the re-insertion of the small pin and how you were honest about that part of the process makes this a very relatable piece of work. Loved it! OH and this is probably what's wrong with my boat and now, after your demonstration, I think I got this!
Thanks for the video. It helped me in replacing the seal and o-ring in my Volvo-Penta XDP outdrive. My shift assembly is almost identical to the SX shown here and the replacement seal part number was the same. Although I didn't have the tool to seat the seal, I used one over-sized socket and one just undersized that did the job. Keep the videos coming. Like someone else mentioned here, I'd like to see one on replacing the prop seals. Thanks again!
Excellent video. I just did this job on an Volvo Penta MS4b gearbox after watching. Essentially it's exactly the same and easy if you take your time. Use Volvo genuine parts they are much better quality than the seals that failed.
RockStar791-Great video man. You do an excellent job with shift seal replacement. I currently have a Four Winns 240 Horizon with a Volvo DuoProp that needs the same thing done. I appreciate your assistance in showing the steps. Best video in my opinion, not only did you list the part numbers but you gave some great tips on gear oil inspections. Do you guys have a shop in California, would like to have you guys as a great repair shop in the future. Can't wait for some more videos man. Thanks a lot.
just do same job on my sx , but maybe I think I have to replace the propeller shaft seal too... I found your video very usefull. Unfortunately no video on how to take out the bearing carrier of the lower propeller shaft.
Thanks. We would be in real trouble if that roll pin didn't come out so easily ! That selector paddle can be installed the wrong way. If so, the plate will not land and will show resistance. On the Volvo MS and MSB gearboxes, the paddle can drop into the gearbox and needs fished with a magnet. Be careful not to lose the spring or the paddle if there is a deep bilge below the motor !! I wonder what size the seal is on the MS and MSB gearboxes.
Thanks for sharing. My outdrive does have milky oil in it. Please let me know how do you flush it out. ? Also bearing on the drive shaft is abit loose. If you have a video on that too would be super.
Thank you very much for explaining things, can I have a link for your second video as my sx-m mixing water with oil I have pressure test it no leak but still water mixing with the oil any thought what look for or what to replace?
I watched this video for the first time months ago in my education phase of boat ownership. How prophetic that I'd actually need to do the exact fix myself going into winter. My SX-M outdrive took on a small amount of water this summer and my pressure test confirmed it was the shift seal that's leaking. It wasn't me who overfilled it! I've got everything to do the job except that special seal seating tool. Is that critical or can I get by with a substitute like a section of PVC?
My 1997 4.3 Gl Volvo Penta engine on a Glastron boat blew up over the weekend. I think the timing belt broke off completing destroy the piston. Are there places out there selling engine model?
Hi ROCKSTAR 791, very much appreciated taking the time making these videos and sharing your knowledge. I have a concern on my VP SX-M outdrive. I recently replaced the oil but i was aware of the level side screw hole. and because of it I didnt put enogh oil in the unit. I took the boat out for a couple of hours. and notice noise coming the outdrive. it will come and go. so i decided to pull boat out and check level i was 30 oz low. now i have metal shaving at the magnet. please advice. I could pass on email to discuss the matter. I really appriciate your help. thank you Sir.
hi rockstart my name is joe ,very good video ,i just want to ask a question ,on the seal for the prop shaft inside the bearing housin , the seal didint came with instruction would you please tell which way the seal is going in ?thanks in advance
Beautiful video. I have a 2007 Volvo SX-A outdrive and last time on the water it refused to go back into neutral. I had to trickle back into the dock and turn it off in gear. I figured shift cable was bad but I disconnected the linkage and I was able to shift smoothly at the control arm with it disconnected from the drive. I checked the service records and it looks like last year the Shift Shaft was sealed just like the video you have attached for the same issue. I was able to tap the shift mechanism lightly with a hammer and move it back in neutral for now but its very stiff. Would you recommend doing this repair a second time and seeing if it fixes the issue or would you guess there is a bigger problem like a cone clutch issue etc?
Kills me when I see metal on metal contact when hammering something. I'd use a pair of 2x4's on the vice. No drift pin too? Hammer to hammer contact nice!
Hi.Thanks for this great video !! One question do you have the Shaft Seal Tools number or were i can buy it this Tool. Also do you recommend any other that the Volvo Penta Geal oil lube Thanks in advance

Excellent video, I have a DP-D1 and got a hole in my drive bellows, I also have milky gear oil. Do you have a video on how to flush the unit?

Is there any way I can install the new seal without the seal tools ? Very helpful video, I will try to replace the seal on my volvo SX.

Larry Jackson. Forward and revers or just one or the other?? If so just adjust the brass trunnions on the back of the shift cable. Thanks. Marc.
Do you do it the same way for a 1976 volvo MD2B With a MS Reverse gear? Can't find any thing on the computer about older volvo's! Thanks Vern.
Whats the part number for that neat stubby Snap-on screw stick there?
My 1997 4.3 Gl Volvo Penta engine on a Glastron boat blew up over the weekend. I think the timing belt broke off completing destroy the piston. Are there places out there selling engine model?

Could throwing it in reverse while in drive too fast cause the shaft seal to blow
Is that a rebuild kit or did you buy parts separate? I want to do mine do you have part numbers?

There is another video on how to shim the screw holding the shift lever.
ua-cam.com/video/SRkxaEjxzzI/v-deo.htmlsi=BpBgetML1Z4J_6y3. This could be the problem
I'm doing this exact repair. What is the spacific tool you used to set the seal?
Did you happen to find what tool is used?
any video on what would cause shifting delays, could my cable linkage be loose at the outdrive end, any suggestion on other causes?
are both forward and reverse slow? what can happen is the cone can wear out so you may find forward gear is soft and reverse is more positive.
ua-cam.com/video/SRkxaEjxzzI/v-deo.htmlsi=BpBgetML1Z4J_6y3. I found this video. This could be the issue
