Special report: Why living on the coast can take years off your life

  • It seems like the perfect lifestyle.
    Fresh sea air, no grinding daily commute into work and lower house prices.
    But the realty can be somewhat different.
    Health inequalities mean people are living 10 years less in some coastal towns.
    Issues like addiction, mouldy housing stock, poverty and deprivation all pile pressure on local health facilities.
    Adele Robinson spent time in Hastings speaking to those affected by the issues.

  • @kevinh96
    @kevinh96 Рік тому +18

    It has nothing to do with living on the coast, it has everything to do with poverty, deprivation and the resultant crime, drugs and alcohol problems that come with it. There are many reasons why coastal towns are often more deprived, a big part is likely the fact that many, many jobs are seasonal. Another reason is that coastal towns are often not well connected and within easy reach of major population centres, so they tend not to attract industries like warehousing and manufacturing. The weather also plays a part as things like wetter conditions and higher winds undoubtedly take a toll on buildings making repairs more expensive for both private and social landlords thereby pushing up rents. Coastal towns also, as the report does mention, often attract older people looking to retire who bring their health problems with them, skewing the health figures negatively.

    I lived in Thanet for 26 years. The coastal towns are beautiful and a God send to those who appreciate what they have to offer. Alcoholism and drug abuse is a problem nation wide.
    The issue is the lack of industry. Government has left these towns to rot. Corruption within local councils is rife.
    Corporations and globalisation have destroyed this nation along with the UN and WEF.

    I’m sorry, this isn’t funny at all, but these journalists are idiots, they literally are implying the ocean is contributing to this problem with this clickbait header, which is definitely not the topic. People with issues tend to reside there, and furthermore the government neglects the seaside, that’s a very different story. I feel like they choose these titles to purposely lessen the severity of this issue. Maybe this should be in the news more than a mother who was suicidal and went missing 👀

    Is this because of mass unemployment during out of tourist season? Nothing to do for 8 months of the year? Is that the problem?

    • @TheSlinq
      @TheSlinq Рік тому +5

      No, the problem is that people stopped taking seaside holidays in the UK in the 1970s, and since then our seaside towns have been in terminal decline.
