Normally a criminal convictions leads to jail. Imagine a candidate sitting in jail on election day. As Joseph de Maistre said in 18th centiry France, "In a democracy, the people get the leaders they deserve"
The basic point here is that the only thing Donald Trump is interested in is Donald Trump. Everything else about his views can change.
How do they allow people to participate as a presidential candidate if they are criminally convicted?
American here … when the Brexit vote passed, my very first thought was OMG, Trump could win. If a serious nation that provided the intellectual capital for the creation of the USA (John Locke and others) could make such a self-destructive decision, then so could the US.
Legally, we shouldn't care that Trump used to be a President. If he is convicted for his criminal acts, then he's a criminal and should be put in jail. It's not complicated. It's only complicated socially, and that shouldn't matter legally.
