My mistake was installing an exhaust and tightening each screw down all the way as I went rather than tightening everything to finger tight first, arranging everything, then tightening everything a little at a time. My exhaust was so crooked and rattled against the car as I drove. Eventually I had to go back and loosen everything, align it all, then tighten down again.

    My rookie mistake:
I used to work at a shop and decided to upgrade my sway bars. The rear one went on without a problem. The front one however...... I dropped the subframe as it needed to come out that way and sure enough it did. I put the new sway bar in, aligned the subframe back into place or I thought I did, and like an rookie with confidence I decided to get my impact and gun it down without starting the bolt by hand(that’s where I found out I had fucked up). Come to find out it’s apparently not easy to find a tap and die set that was big enough for the bolt. I tried 2 autozones, 1 pep boys, and 2 harbor freight. The second and last harbor freight I went to had the thread pitch I needed for the bolt. Unfortunately by the time I got back to the shop it was 10 at night and was too tired and pissed at what happened. It was 4 days later that I actually got to get the car back on the lift to work on it and get it right. Mind you I lived 60 miles away which was my commute to work. It sucked but I learned my lesson to never rush something simple.

For my first track day I over torqued the front lugs on my 97 Jetta. I was new to using a digital torque wrench. When they did the tech inspection 2 bolts broke. They were cross threaded and required a new hub before I could go on track. Lucky for me some of the guys in my SCCA reigon had the spares I needed and got me on track. I had to do the work but they supervised and checked everything I did.

Time dedication... Yuuuuuuuuuuuuup. Installing coilovers... Nah they'll just pop right in. Buuuuuuuuuuut the stock strut was wedged so tightly into the fork I was like I'll never get this off ever. Went through thinking I was gonna have to get the car dragged onto a tow truck to get it cause the stock strut wasn't coming off or going back into its place. Ended up forcing it up with a big bolt on a neighbor's car jack. Ofc the aftermarket one DID just pop right in but god.
Installing the front coilovers... The driver's side sway bar end link was so badly rust welded on, and the bolt was a stupid hex bolt over nut thing, both were rust-stripped... had to order new sway bar end links, wait for shipping, then angle grind the stock end link off the sway bar. Fun times.
Aftermarket exhaust install... bolts that hold half the exhaust on both snapped coming off, ended up jury rigging it with two different bolts and a metal plate with a hole drilled in it as a washer because I couldn't find a second one... Two years and they still haven't fallen off the car. Someday I'll either get good stainless ones and preemptively put them on, or I'll be going 65 on the freeway and my exhaust will fall off the car. Either or.
Wiring is one thing I can't stress enough about taking your time on. I live in Canada, where it can rain, snow, hail, and be sunny all in the same day. If you do what I did for my aftermarket side markers, and just electrical tape the wires and go "eh good enough" eventually you'll notice one light not working, or you'll pop a fuse, and have to rip your bumper off to redo it the right way later. Solder that shit, then heat shrink it. Then heat shrink it again, then tape it, then zip tie it. Now you're done. Yes, having to redo that at -30C because you were a lazy shit sucks.

Turns out the filter spout was too long hitting the bottom of the transmission pan. Costed me 6 quarts of transmission fluid and hours of unpaid diagnosis. The filter bought was for the correct vehicle being the filter recommended by AutoZone and O'Reilly's. You can bet the old filter was slapped back on.

Well none of those should be your first mod. Unless it's necessary. On a newer car none of that is an issue, because they have technology these days in the suspension that is better than most after market products. The wheels are completely your choice. Alot of newer stock wheels actually look good. Suspension should not be a thought at all until your current suspension decides to shit the bed, because if you aren't replacing a worn out suspension, you're wasting money. Tires should be your first upgrade only if the stock tires are garbage. Cosmetics should not be your first mod, it should be an after thought, once everything else is done. If you buy an older car, do whatever you want, there's no order to it. But if it's a new car, leave it how it is, and invest in worthwhile upgrades like horsepower. Because no one gives a shit about your car that can't move.

Buddy of mine didn't check the wheels when putting on the lugs. First one gouged into the side of the hole and the rest followed suit. Didn't realize it until I saw it a week later. Had to replace the studs, lugs, and the rim.

Never made rookie mistakes on my own car. But my friends cars, oh yeah, fun times. But that's what they get for asking for help, and then having me do most of it. I had never done an exhaust before, so it really just came down to not knowing what i was doing. After about 20 minutes i figured everything out and installed the cat-back in about an hour. Just kind of figure it out as you go. Turbo and intercooler piping, or electronic stuff i don't fuck with.
There were a few times my window stopped working because it got frozen to the top of the door, and when i went to roll it down, it ended up coming unglued. So i ripped the door panel off, not knowing how to do it, and eventually got it off without breaking anything. That was a 2hr process. After that i had to do it about 3-4 more times because the glue wasn't holding, but after that only took a few minutes to unistall, and reinstall. Now i'm the community car window fixer, i've done it on 4 different people's cars. Window doesn't work, ask matt. Save you bullshit mechanics fee's for 7 minutes of work.

Self install of id1050x injectors and made mistake of thinking all the 12mm bolts were the same, they are not. Thankfully I only took off the crash plates and didnt pull the whole manifold to do it.

Of your led turn signal is is flashing faster then the others it means the resistance is off. Look for led turn signals that are canbus or have resistors built in and compatible with your car.

If it's on their site the wheels and suspension should be listed with links to purchase. That's a good start point.

There’s a lot of conflicting info on the internet about exhaust back pressure, the only time I can see that being valid is on a turbo application. Most likely you’ll get zero HP gains and a little more noise, you definitely do not need a tune to throw a catback on your car

Rookie mistake: was taking off my egr valve to clean it and one of the bolts holding it in place snapped off. Luckily there was couple of millimeters of thread left on top so I just screwed a nut on top to hold it.

This question might sound dumb but how do you get the right lug nuts or bolts from like from your normal autozone or from where you bought your rims

    • @FitmentIndustries
      @FitmentIndustries  5 років тому

You usually get them with your wheel and tires but you can purchase different types of lugs from shops like Autozone!

Not having the patience when working on my truck. Ended up accidentally putting a hole in the hood. I was putting on the hood latch mechanism and I grabbed the wrong bolts for the part thats on the hood itself and ramed one bolt right through the hood with an impact...live and learn I guess. I seem to have gotten a lot more patience when working on cars.
