I got a question I own a 1983 Oldsmobile 9/8 Regency I'm storing it for the winter every time I try to start it after winter the motor seems to act like it's locking up I have to take the spark plugs out spray the spark plug shaft replace the spark plugs then it fires up with no problem do I have to start the 307 up every once in awhile during the winter just to keep the motor from locking up

I agree, I've been watching a lot of his videos, and I've picked up a few tricks myself that have helped me down the road. Scotty is an honest dude and that's hard to find a lot of mechanics out there like that.
He wont. Ever
I work at an auto parts store. Scotty is right. I always try to advise customers about what is best for them not necessarily what makes the most money. It’s integrity and trust. Sadly only 5 to 10% of people take the good advice.
I have NOT sold a customer a battery that they asked me for because he did not need it. He tried but I insisted he have someone check things out first. He came back two days later. Sold him a starter and had a customer for life because he was not taken advantage of.
Keep on helping those that will take it

I am not a mechanic but i maintain and fix what I can. In 1970 at age 15 I bought craftsman tools over several months with my allowance. I STILL HAVE THEM.
Yep, back then they were top of the line. But starting 2010, it's now made in China and a few in Taiwan. Taiwan made is better than Chinese made, but still not as good as Craftsman USA.
Scotty is a special kind of stupid
I was 13 at that tme and still have Craftsman from from 70s.
Craftmams used to be way better than it is today tho
I use to but Craftsman. They broke all the time for me. I guess because I use them. I have Stanley tools I bought over 10-15 years ago, that's what I first grab for when I need a tool. Never had one that broke. Another reason I don't but Craftsman anymore is because they're now made in China.
Walmart has the cheapest top brand oil I've seen. I pay roughly 22 dollars for a 5qt of Castrol edge full synth high mileage. Cheaper high quality filters too.
Yeah walmart is the best place for oil and filters all day
As someone who has worked at a parts store for the last 9+ years, the biggest problem is lack of knowledge but by the customer. We’re supposed to know EVERY detail about EVERY car, but customers can’t be bothered to know enough about what they drive to be able to maintain it properly, but it’s not their fault they don’t/won’t buy the proper parts.
Trying to cheap out on automotive parts typically ends up being much more costly than if you would have bought the slightly more expensive oem part from the begining. Trust me, I've learned this lesson the hard way several times in the past 🤦🏽♂️

Yea that’s just being smart. If you are to the right on the human intelligence bell curve then by definition the majority of people will lack the mental acuity to follow what you say.m, they will perceive you as strange because they don’t understand.
You made a really good point about the "OEM" parts vs. original manufacturers. You should've pointed out that a lot of batteries are infact literally the same as others at almost every place they sell one. I discovered years ago East Penn Manufacturing aka Penn-Deka makes batteries for most national retailers. Once you figure out the numbers you'll find them anywhere you want to buy one with a different brand label. I discovered there was a manufacturing plant near by and I could buy them straight out of the front office for nearly half the price of a retailer.

Just to show you that some parts can be cheap parts, I once owned a 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe. The water pump weep hole started pouring out water when I was coming home from a trip. I made it home after getting some antifreeze and water and pouring it in every so often in the next day went to a local parts store that was the only one open on Sunday and bought a rebuilt water pump. I installed it and refilled the system with antifreeze and water and immediately the pump started pouring out fluid out of the weep hole. I took it off losing most of my antifreeze in the process and got them to give me another one and went to the same process and then the same thing happened with that one. I took it back and got a third one and put it on and the same thing happened again. I returned it and got my money back and the next day went and got one elsewhere and didn't have any problems. It was obvious to me that what was probably done was the seal was either left out when they rebuilt it or they didn't replace it and all they did was clean it and repaint it. It probably came from China and I lost a lot of money and antifreeze because I didn't have a catch pan at the time but these people were selling junk. They didn't even sound like it was a big deal when I took them back and they had a big box of what appeared to be brand new so-called rebuilt parts in a return box going back to their supplier so it showed me that place was getting junk. I had to replace the fuel pump another time and bought one from Western Auto Automotive parts and shortly afterward the car would cut out and I had it towed into the shop and they could not find out what was wrong because a few minutes after they got it they cranked it up and it ran perfect. This happened two other times costing me time and money. I decided it had to be the fuel pump even though the mechanic said it checked out fine. After three times being towed I had enough especially when the first time was on a trip on a weekend. It cranked up about an hour later and ran fine the rest of the trip but I was towed in to Montgomery Alabama where it was checked out and found to be fine at that point. I told the shop that was checking it out the last time to get a GM pump even though they said there was nothing wrong with the one I had in there. After they replaced it I never had any more trouble so I agree on certain things you definitely should go with the OEM part.

Research before you buy parts. Sometimes OEM parts have issues that aftermarket parts fix. How can you find out ? Join a forum community dedicated to the car in question and ask. There are highly skilled people on there with tons of experience that can tell you exactly what works and what doesn't.
ToyotaNation dot com ! forums are excellent for buying research too !!
As the owner of an '87 BMW, I have to agree. A lot of aftermarket parts for it are actually better than the originals. I installed aftermarket ball joints and control arms that are far better and cheaper than OEM, for example. And in some cases OEM parts are no longer manufactured. I agree with buying OEM in general, but on my 32-year-old German car, there are a lot of exceptions.
Wife has a 2010 Mini Pooper. I quickly learned that aftermarket is better for that POS.

Go to any salvage yard and get your part folks. Most of these cars are body damage only and the other parts are still good. OEM!

Ralpher Romulus Yeah I’ve found brand new alternators and water pumps on cars in the boneyard.
aint worth the time unless its a classic car, id rather buy it from a store and get a warranty. If you go to the salvage yard ya gotta yank the part out then put it on your car, your essentially doing the job twice.

I use eBay for years to buy most of the parts for my 3 vehicles. Parts include oil and air filters, thermostat, spark plugs, O2 sensors, brake pads. etc. Most were made in China. I've never had any problems.
ive bought 600$ in parts and sensors on ebay for around 30$ and never had a problem
Most everything is made in China there is next to nothing made in the US anymore.. Most Americans can't afford anything else
Same. Never had any problems. Also, Detroit Axle has been very good for me.
I have a friend working for a tool and jig manufacturer in China. She said China makes parts for most car manufacturers in the world. Some GM models has the whole engine make in China. I bought wheel bearings, washer pumps and controller for my Lexus, even turbo chargers for my Mazda with no problem. Chinese products are not the same as even 10 years ago. They just landed a Rover on the far side of the moon last week. They can do things properly if they want to provided the price is right. It seems China bashing is a patriotic thing to do these days. I won’t argue with my wallet if I can pay $19 for a Controller on eBay instead of $145 at the dealer.
Right

Go for OEM unless you're buying electronics for a GM.
In that case, stay as far away from OEM as possible.
Yes, and no GM oil filters. Very cheap built. Got a GM? Go with Wix.
Dont buy hoseclamps, nuts, bolts and other hardware from an autoparts store, the local hardware store is half to a third the price.
Desert Brewcrew underrated comment here
Yup. Go to Ace for nuts bolts and hose clamps. Go to the auto shop for brake pads and maybe a 20mm socket 😁
Sometimes you need hardened hardware. That's naturally a little more expensive.
Right. You can go to Lowes and buy some aluminum pipe clamps and bolts, but they will corrode and shear off from road vibration and weather. There is a reason why pipe clamps and bolts for cars are at an auto store and cost more, they are properly conditioned and treated for auto use. It's stupid how stupid people get trying to save money when they get to the point where they don't even know what they are talking about anymore. It's like saying bicycle brake cables and car brake cables are the same thing and get bicycle cables for cheaper.
MrWolfSnack I will go one step further. Dont go to an parts store to get headbolts or push pins for fenderskirts. Those are OEM parts. Most people who watch this channel are smart enough to know the difference between grades of hardware. Theres definately a time and place for OEM hardware ONLY. But replacing a couple of bolts on a no stress area like an oil pan or even a waterpump since its mostly silicone and o-ring anyway isnt going to harm anything. Anyone stupid enough to mess with their brake system by deliberately sabotaging it by going cheap deserves to crash. Ive never had problems and neither has anyone of my hundreds of customers after 31 years have by me using this practice. Perhaps commenting on politcal channels would be more appropriate for your liking since you assume people are less inteligent than you.
My favorite picture is the one of the air intake but its a Pringle can 🤣
I've worked In parts store and dealerships and it's sad to say that that isn't uncommon to see. What's even worse is some of the cars we told customers were unsafe to drive and they had to sign a waiver just to drive their vehicle off the lot without us being liable after telling them. People just don't care.
The best are the ones with the lightly salted chips. Salt is bad for the engine.
@@thissorthosesofthesesguys133 it's because people buy cars that are 30K to 50K and can barely make the payments, and have to shell out more money to fix a car. Put yourself in their shoes. They might be more worried about putting a roof over their heads or having electricity, putting food on the table for their family.
You work for a parts store and can get discounts and know about repairing vehicles. You have a circle of friends/associates you can get advice to repair your vehicle. The average person doesn't have that.
@@someperson8151 oh I get it the average person doesn't know how to budget. Thank you for making that clear for me. The other exception is that eBay is a great resource for used parts. Many major junk yards have eBay store fronts. I recently got a used starter for a 99 Mercedes ML430. The vehicle had 186,000 miles so paying $750 for a starter was out of the question. I found an excellent starter with only 50,000 miles for $40 on eBay. Installed it and it worked perfectly! Amazing.
Nice.
The key is knowing what you are looking for, and finding the seller who is honest. It can be good or bad, but I agree with you mostly. I've found a lot of good parts on ebay when it just wasn't feasible locally.
better to just go to pullapart, you can return it and grab another one as much as you want if it dont work.
Devoy Williams - you can return parts to wrecking yards on eBay as well. Also eBay is pretty strict on these sellers so they make sure they don’t send you garbage in fear of you complaining and/or leaving a negative comment. Just my experience

I buy oil from Wal-Mart and a K&N oil filter, air filters, for my car & truck. I have had no problems with them so far .
Scotty, die-hard fan here! I've learned more from you than ALL other vid-jockey Scotty wannabes combined!!
Anyway, enough "Hero Worship". Have '95 Chevy Tahoe 2-dr w\the TBI 350cc\5.7L that has a "miss" that is not constant, usually happens after she's warmed up. Started (after each one of the following the miss continued) w\the fuel filter, then plugs and wires, then distributor cap and rotor, coil, then Ignition Control Module. All to no avail. As its OBD 1, reading codes is not as easy as I first thought. Now it's showing codes for the throttle position sensor, and downstream O2 sensor. I feel like I'm rebuilding this component by component. The O2 sensors are less than 18-months old, but the TPS is probably original. But before i go replacing more components, am i just being lead around by the nose or should I just follow orders (OBD 1 orders)? I'm thinking about doing the TPS 1st and just see what that does to my codes? You should know that this truck sat inside for 12-yrs, and aside from the occasional cracked/corroded wire, she ran great.
I trust you and am tired of being told things so I'll just buy more, so if you could, please shoot me a reply!?!
Thanks!
Mike N
The one thing you didn't mention though is counterfeit and fake parts. The problem is every copy is done differently so sometimes you think you are getting the real part number and it's a fake. Scary stuff.
That happened to me. I replaced MAF and TPS. TPS was fake. This caused diagnostic headaches for a month until throttle was graphed, TPS was pulled and the old and replacement were compared under magnifying glass. Old TPS was actually Okay.
Those cars at pebble beach have parts made by me. By definition they are counterfeit.
Actually, he did, but only for 1/2 a second.
He showed two labels, one that was OEM, and one that said it was OEM but the label was a bit different.
He did not spend much time at all on it, and it is easily missed.
Yep, I purchased two identical high quality tie rods from Amazon but they only had one in stock so the second one came from another vendor (auto parts stores) - they both came in the correct box but one was the correct machined part and the other was a compressed low quality pot metal part. Certainly Amazon replaced the inferior part, but had I not realized it I would installed the cheapo version while paying for the premium one. I've even had parts that you could see someone ground a cheap part name off and stamped it with another, but you had to look at it just right in the light to see it. The only reason Ebay is worse than Amazon besides the shipping is when you do have a problem it takes more work to get it resolved.
OMG! I cannot buy parts on Ebay because of Chinese knockoffs. I now go to Rockauto and buy the little more expensive Supreme part. I cannot have another ball joint or control arm break on me it is so scary. I have had great luck with BECK /ARNEY sourced parts. They are packaged very well and every part I have bought has been good quality.

Hey Scotty! I have been watching your videos for years and you have saved me thousands of dollars. I have a question for you Master Mechanic. My son has a bad throttle body with sensor. He went to his friends junkyard and got one off the same year make model car. He cleaned it and put it on. What are the chances that the ECM will accept it?
Loving this one thanks for sharing very important information giving thanks blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work souflotv 🙏🙏🙏🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲💪💪💪
"Never buy car parts from someone that won't stand behind the product and offer a return policy"
yep. that is what is soooo great about ebay (if pay pal doesn't screw you that is) that you can see the record of all their transactions to an extent and what people said about the part you are buying. He's right if there is no feedback at least 20 to 50 i would say, get it somewhere else. many parts are too new to have that but if you can find what your looking for with good feedback on the part and what people said about it...you can search all that, then you should be in good shape buying it !!! Also, I never mess with sellers on ebay unless they have a 99% or above positive rating from all their transactions. If you are going to do a lot of purchases or sales there of course it would be good to see how people have been ripped off by paypal before that happens to you so you are not unpleasantly surprised.
amazon has a great warranty problem is i want the product to last
@@sonnymoon6465 eBay fucks sellers so it generally is a good place to buy. It might be a buyer's market now because the site has really gone downhill over the last couple of years.
Make sure the guarantee is right on the box. Lol

Yes !! I love my gearwrench set.. 10 yrs and havent failed me yet! love my silblades too ! (4 years and running!).. you're on point scotty! one of my customers came to me with a "new" ebay MAF and i inspected the wire inside and it wasnt even soldered right !!

You are so right my friend I agree with you because I don't buy brand new cars so I resigned good parts for my vehicle I'm a keeper this is why I don't have no debt because I don't have no car payment
In the early 2000s I was a quality engineer at a large remanufacturer of alternators and starters. I was placed on a "warranty reduction" team. I was shocked to learn that we had a 10% failure rate within the first 30 days after purchase! To be fair, that was 20 years ago and maybe it's better today. And this may not apply to other types of remanufactured parts. But for me personally I always buy OEM for something like an alternator or starter that will leave you stranded if it fails.
One interesting thing most customers don't realize is most major auto parts stores actually use the same catalog. It occasionally happens that the catalog is wrong, and the part they get sold doesn't actually match. This happens a lot with Chryslers and some less common models of vehicles. What you shouldn't do, is go to another parts store because usually it's wrong in their system too because the same catalog. What I've recommended to people is now they have the old part out, go ahead and cross reference the part number and usually that works out much better. I had a guy go to three different part stores and every one sold him the wrong starter until he got to mine and I just pulled the number off it and typed it in and he was on his way. Even followed up with the guy and he said he had no issue getting it in. Also if you can't find a part number, find the number from the dealership, any retail parts store should be able to cross reference it to their own in their system.
I love this video! I like the slightly more accurate version of "you get what you pay for", which is "you get what you pay for or less!".
EBay is best in my opinion. Just be smart and know your brands.
I bought a TPS which was supposed to be OEM but turned out to be counterfeit. It took looking with a magnifying glass to see that the font was not quite right.
100% agree with all of this advice, good job Scotty!
This guy is great. I could watch him talk about anything. Thank you UA-cam for reccomend him. My life is better for it
You can buy everything cheaper on line. The question is how fast do you need the item and warranty issues are tuff as hell with online stores but a brick and mortar store you go to can warranty on the spot.
with a 50% markup too! Especially Auto Zone they SUCKK. NAPPA all the way, or O'reileys if it comes to it.
Go to walmart for all oil and filters..wide variety and lowest prices
Walmart in my town is ghetto. There's always assaults
Buy your filters online from a dealership that discounts. Honda, Toyota make the best filters for their vehicles. Pretty good prices from online dealerships for a 1/2 case of 6.
Walmart does pay a living wage and has an office to help their full-time employees apply for benefits so their kids are not hungry.
JUST BOYCOTT WALLMART !!!
avoid fram filters look on youtube comparisons.
Yup, oil and filters are like the only two things I go to Walmart for.
Your local dealer pics cracked me up every time 🤣
Scotty you are the best in the business I have seen in a very long time , I am not a mechanic, but I have watch your videos and fix my cars thank you sir for what you do.
60+ parts bought randomly from eBay...100% satisfaction rate.
Banjo Miner Ditto
You buy parts randomly? Interesting...lol
🙂 the local stores have rotating weekly promos and many have online sites, i always check them all before deciding what to get locally and where and what to get online ✌️😏
OEM is the way to go....especially on Japanese imports. I worked for a tier one supplier for Honda of north America for 11 years. We supplied instrument clusters and transmission controllers when the Ohio plant first opened in the late 80s.
Honda's failure acceptance ratio from their tier one suppliers was 1 failure per million parts. If you hit more than 1/1mil, it was a trip to Ohio for a meeting and stock inspection. Shut down their production line because of product failure? Contracted
$10,000 per minute fine.
I have driven Honda's from that day on.
Ya know you can just put the oem part number in the EBay search bar....
Look up the part on the dealer website...copy paste part number.
Just check the description & sellers feedback rating & read reviews. Takes 15 seconds. Some are sold by a dealership!
I am an EBay top rated power seller.
I bought the PIAA silicone wipers blades and they are outstanding. I highly recommend them. Thanks Scotty
how much? i live in Arizona. the sun dries them up so fast. but i still need to turn my wipers on daily when i wash of the desert dust.
@@maximusareilius2262 you can get them on Amazon they are a little more money than the most expensive ones at stores but considering they last years it's an investment it'll save you a lot of money. I'm from the Northeast and this summer we had the hottest summer heat waves,it was probably hotter than Arizona and my wipers are perfect now in the winter. unaffected by the weather. I doubt that. I have family up there in the NE. 90F is a heatwave up there. I live in Texas where 100F is a normal summer day and 110 is not unusual.

Yep, a jug of Mobil1 full synthetic is $38 at Autozone, and $24 at Walmart. You’ve gotta shop around. 🤑🤑
Because Miata yup. Walmart is where I pick up my oil instead of auto Zone is $45

Anyone notice that the $20-$35 beam flex "advanced tech" wiper blades that Ford, etc started using in 2011 instead if the traditional blade refill that was $3-$10 for the past 40 years ...
Now the replacement blades are those same $3 traditional four point blades that fit older cars, clamped into a disguising plastic cover and they cost $20+.
I been working on cars over 30 yrs this guy taught me so much
Taught me very little but reminded me of many things and encouraged me to do the researcn necessary to get up to date with trends and focus my mechanical theories. My vehicle is 2001, but it is still good to know what matters with recent production.

Wrong wrong wrong..... I buy eBay almost exclusively. I search for oem parts, NOT OEM LIKE parts. I obtain genuine parts, very regularly, from dealers even and never have problems. I don't pay tax, or shipping, and I always double check seller feedback.
Been doing this for a long time. I can count every problem on one hand. eBay, is by far, the best and cheapest I've found. Cheaper than Amazon.
Besides, you support the smaller people, and not lining corporate pockets for more.
Facts.
I agree. I can find great deals on factory parts for my trucks on ebay!
@@brandonh.8882 I think the key is, proper search words, and the search tools. Ship from US, free shipping and lowest items first. There will be some BS in there, but Wade through it, it's worth your time.
I do my research and got burnt on eBay buying hydraulic hatchback lifters. Like New turned out to be rusted busted junk!
I was surprised he said that too. I've bought parts that worked great and had a great warranty as well on eBay. Plus a lot of big box stores sell on eBay as well.
Scotty's old, it doesn't surprise me that he's been had on eBay before never once have I myself had any issue.
I just had sticker shock on how much wiper blades went up in price plus they used to last 4-5 years, now it's only about a year. Didn't know there were silicone ones so gonna go that route and get them online or from reputable store.
Am so glad to have discovered Scotty, as a woman have been ripped off sooooooo many times with bogus repairs and inferior parts.
Thanks much Scotty, your videos are invaluable with great advice and fun to watch. The "mail order bride" cracked me completely up! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
ohthelovelypoems yes they are awesome
I spent 12 years in the auto parts business and never head of silicone blades. None of the stores I've ever worked in, nor our competitors sold them, and they still don't (as far as I know. I didn't know to look for them, but now I will).
My sticker shock was batteries. I got out of the business in 1999. Back then we were selling 72 month batteries for around $45-$50. In the entire time since then and up until last year I never had a need for a new battery. First of all, the prices vary by vehicle application, back then all batteries in a particular product line (60 month vs 72 month vs 84 month) were the same price... Around $45-$50 for that 72 monther. Now they start around $80 and can run as much as $130. The deal with batteries... They're all the same. They're made of the same plastic housing, have the same plates and are filled with electrolyte. The only difference is the outside physical dimensions... So why the wide variance in price? The technology in batteries hasn't changed. Granted, there are some types of batteries that didn't exist back then, but those aren't the ones I'm talking about. I'm talking about the regular, maintenance free, lead acid battery that has existed in its current form and without change for who knows how many decades. Probably at least 50+ years when American auto manufacturers all switched to 12 volt systems. And who knows how long before that? The technology hasn't changed, only the amount of voltage (I want to say it was 1964 when everyone finally got on the same page and started producing 12 volt cars and trucks, so at least 55 years since lead acid battery technology has had any significant advances in technology) and the configuration of the plates.
Ok... end of rant.
ohthelovelypoems silicon blades at my local auto zone are like 35 bucks for 1 wiper 😳😳
The wiper blade pricing is astronomical because the auto parts stores stopped selling the refills. They want you to buy the entire metal blade as well so they are $20+. I found refills on rockauto and bought 10 sets for like $1.50 each.
Thanks a bunch for all these videos!!!!
I've always been treated well and had a good experience with Napa and Auto Zone. When it comes to vehicles and their parts, you nine times outta ten get what you pay for. That Pringles can cracked me up lol!
