- Hi all Rho here! Today we discuss What If Leman Russ were the next Primarch to return to the Imperium?

I’m pretty sure that what Russ is really looking for in the warp is actually Isha. We know that Nurgle pretty much kidnapped her at the birth of slannesh to “save” her, and she is now imprisoned by nurgle and forced to consume his latest plagues to see how quickly she recovers, basically his way of testing a plagues potency. Isha is the goddess of harvest, fertility, life, healing and growth. In Norse mythology there is a similar goddess with a similar name , Idun, who grows the apples of immortality, which technically stem from Yggdrasil, the tree of life, which the gods must eat to keep their youth and vigor. With Russ being based upon Norse culture, it is likely he is looking for his own apples of immortality to heal, or at least start the healing process, for the Emperor. The signs point to Isha as the only God with the ability and the motive to give Russ such a gift.

Who or what is going to power the Astronomicon? Without constant sacrificing himself and his psychic army in the Silent City, how can the Imperium navigate the warp? No, what is needed is for time to go back to the instant Magnus the Red broke the seals on the Emperor's webway. If the Emperor had completed it before Magnus, there would be no need for the Astronomicon. As it stands, the Imperium needs the Eldar's web to circumvent need for warp travel. I think Russ's fate is mixed with Valdor's. Have not followed story from "Two Metaphysical Blades" narrative to current "King in Yellow" rumors.

Russ would be so furious about the imperium currently, and he wouldn’t hold his tongue like Guilleman did. But I think he’d be proud of many of the chapters and lead a new hunt to protect the imperium nihilus
Any loyalist primarch would be furious with the imperium. Because what the imperium currently is has exactly been the crap they drove away during the crusade.
Russ is literally to blame for the imperiums state. All he needed to do is drag magnus home and kill horus. That all. He had the chance to do both and fucked it up both times
Something tells me if he’d dragged the filthy sorcerer back to Terra he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to kill Horus.
His chance at Horus only came about because he fell into Horus’ trap and went to war with Prospero - No war means he dumps Magnus on Terra and sods off before news of Horus’ betrayal reaches Terra.

More likely Magnus gets curbstomped alongside Sanguinius and his busted ass gets put on the Iron Throne because it's the most useful thing he has left to offer.
Well since the 'cleansing' of Fenris has been retconned (thank god). He would:
1. Reform his legion.
2. Punch each of his 'new sons' in the face.
3. Offer a great feast to his new sons. Have his old sons as his table personally.
4. Curse out Bjorn and give him a hug.
5. Fly off into space doing Space Wolf shit.

I can't help but imagine Bjorn deep in battle fighting, but slowly losing ground. Just before he is overwhelmed, a howl pierces the battleground and all the Space Wolves pause, only to hear Bjorn scream a howl back over the pause.
I know we all think that the Lion is the next to return, and may be the best for Guilliman, but I actually think it would be better for the setting to have Russ return first.
#1: it would immediately tell the player/fans that this IS the Wolf Time
#2: He would be willing to work with G-man and protect the Imperium
#3: it would set the stage for a cataclysmic civil conflict when the Lion DOES return. The Lion did NOT want to break apart his Legion
#4: we just got a Thousand sons update along with Grey Knights, and Russ would be quite interested to hear about the Months Of Shame.
#5: WE NEED MORE PRIMARCHS

I actually love the idea of Russ returning prior to the Lion because it opens up an avenue for great campaign story lines with an awesome character in so many different ways. With regards to the Unremembered Empire, I don't think Russ would care. He Knows that Guilliman is and always has been Loyal, and he would expect nothing less of the only other Empire Building brother outside of Horus. Also, I think from Guilliman's side, having Russ back would be substantially different from the last time they saw each other. Guilliman has had his eyes opened the the very real nature of the Emperor and they are areas that Russ has a unique understanding of as far back as the heresy from his position within the Primarch framework. Only Dorn had more intimate knowledge of the internal workings of the Empire than Russ and only Valdor and Malcador can claim more than that. So it actually might bring them even closer than they had been in the past, and Guilliman has shown a significant appreciation for the Wolves in general. If Russ were to return, and reforge his Legion, it would also act as a meaning check against the shenanigans of the Inquistion and Ecclesiarchy combined. Knowing that there is a unified force of warp resistant fanatical Astartes that are designed for Astartes vs Astartes battle on a level nearing the Custodes, and it would effectively minimize the impact of the Minitours..... Many awesome aspects to consider if Russ returned for sure.
Intersting take at the end, i know Russ WOULD have cleaned house with the Highlords etc. where Girlyman told them off and sidelind them.

Russ would hear about the months of shame from Bjorn or Logan, then he would do what he was made to do.

The only ones in the Imperium to fear Russ returning is the Inquisition. Pretty sure Russ won't tolerate them after hearing of the siege of Fenris.

I hope he shows up, gets the gist from Bjorn(his literal oldest friend), and beelines to Terra so quickly that Bobby G thinks he’s gone traitor, only for Russ to tell Guilliman “Fuck off. The inquisition’s ass is mine”

@@famforever9278 I actually came up with a scenario where he teams up Kaldor Draigo(who might remind him of Magnus) and the two just go around hacking and burning through Nurgle’s garden till they get to the tree of life, then they survive and escape the warp with the help of Isha.

This would be amazing imagine the conflict between Russ and Guilliman. Their “styles” are completely different except for the total loyalty to the big “E”. Would love it. If any rep from Games Workshop is reading this YES a return of Russ would make me buy more models!!!
I personally think that they match perfectly with a backfield clerk keeping supply line running and a front line general taking names like Eisenhower and Patton each playing to strengths.
Well, Guilliman viewed Russ as one of his "Dauntless Few." Which means, Guilliman trusted Russ to fight with Guilliman. Also, Guilliman said that Russ knocked him down once and scolded Guilliman for not laughing with him.
It’d be like Rogal and Jagahtai during the siege of Terra, they both are polar opposites but they both compliment each other when working together.
Guilliman talks to Leman, informing him of the Imperium’s 10,000 year history, and what Guilliman has had to manage since his awakening.
Guilliman: aaaaaand that’s the kind of empire I’ve been stuck with for a century.
Leman: …I’m done.
Guilliman: Huh?
Leman: This Imperium, this galaxy, I’m done. Gone forever. I’m taking my sons, and making a new home in the Warp. Let these zealous maggots rot in the mess they made from Father’s dream.
Guilliman: …I wouldn’t blame you.
Leman: What the? No stopping me? No trying to convince me to stay? That’s not the boring Blueberry I know.
Guilliman: I said something similar when I woke up. I told Father that we were better off burning in the fires of Horus’s ambition, than surviving long enough to see this. The current state of the Imperium isn’t the worst part for me however. It’s what I can’t repair that burdens my core. The Inquisition has taken root into so many corners of the Imperium. I desperately want to tear it down, and reinstate our father’s Truth. However, it was xenos that brought me back. And if I destroy the Inquisition, the rest of the Imperium will label me a heretic, and turn against me and my sons.
Leman: Fenris’s teeth, Guilliman! Why in the wolf do you try to carry this cesspit?!
Guilliman: Because I’m all it has. The people worth saving, any chance of my father’s dream returning, it all rests with me, and I cannot simply give up. I never had a chance against Mortarion, but if I did not face him, Ultramar would’ve fallen to Nurgle’s clutches.
Leman: Well fuck it, if I’m gonna be a part of this shite show, I need some Fenrisian Ale in me.
Guilliman: Terra, I could go for some as well.
Leman: This drink ain’t for pansy livers, brother. Not even father beat me when he challenged me to a drinking contest.
Guilliman: After the rivers of shit I’ve been navigating, I deserve some good poison.

Friendly reminder that russ is straight up to blame for the state of the imperium, losing the imperium a legion, most of the loyal primarchs, the emperor, malcador, technological advancement etc all because he couldn't follow orders

Russ didn't do anything to get rid of Loyalist Primarchs, if Russ is guilty of anything it's failing to finish the jobs that would have helped the Imperium.
Failed to delete the big, red, crybaby - an epic failure in his own right having failed to lay waste to Fenris on several occasions.
Failed to delete Horus, Sanguinius would probably have something to say on that matter but he was not in any position to give orders to a brother, neither was Rogal Dorn.
Failed to stop Angron using the Butcher's Nails - Not sure how he came to the conclusion that subtle lessons were going to get through Angron's pain addled head but he failed Angron from begining to end.
Failed to be an Executioner - Russ' official head count for eliminating Primarchs is zero.
he would do something decisive and brutal and would call it *Wolf*-something.

He really wouldn't. Russ valued the traditions of Fenris insofar as they made the Rout a better, more fierce fighting force, but he was never one to blindly slave to tradition. Most of that "Wolf" nonsense is a combination of bad translations and cultural degradation of the chapter over the years.
Edit: Not to say that Russ was perfect or anything. Russ was arrogant, stubborn, and could come across as somewhat hypocritical, but at the very least he was capable of a modicum of self-reflection, which is more than can be said of many of his brothers....

Russ’ impact on how the primaris are viewed would be fascinating - I agree with Rho entirely. Russ values strength and loyalty above all and at the moment there’s no reason to doubt either on behalf of the majority of primaris.
Russ will be beyond furious if he knew about how is the imperium now, even mor if he know about the atack of the Inquisition over Fenris in the months of shame and the atack made for the Dark Angels and the Grey Knigth. In other way I would like see the reunion betwen Russ and Bjorn.
You think that'll make him mad, wait till he learns about the Months of Shame events.

While a return of Russ would be great, I would just hope that a Russ & Guilliman moment wouldn't cost us a Bjorn & Guilliman moment. That is the one I want to see more than anything else. Like Bobby G and some indomitus boyz are fighting against some chaos on a planet somewhere and the wolves show up to the party to throw down. I have always had this wonderful vision of demons everywhere and drop pods, thunderhawks, and stormfangs. dropping a pile of wolves off on Guilliman's flank and he sees a lone drop pod falling away by itself closer to him than the wolves. He rallies a bunch of his troops to go rescue the poor squad who's drifted off course into the center of the enemy forces. He makes valiant push as the chaos forces start to fall back and the deamons begin to vanish, driving hard to rescue the beleaguered squad. He reaches the landing point of and comes up over a hill fearing the worst only to see the occupant of the pod, a single dreadnought, has slaughtered the sorcerer coven, killed the chaos lord and his retinue and is currently curb stomping a demon prince. Seeing the ancient dreadnought he recognizes the banner and realizes the pod was never off course. Big Daddy just decided to go and take care of business himself. With the chaos forces in full route the two of them get to have an old generals looking out over the battlefield moment from a hill top or something together. Ending with Bobby G feeling not quite so alone in the galaxy anymore and like he has found the closest thing to one of his brothers in a long time.
I would love to read a scene like that in a gw product.

@@JonyTony2018 I can't recall a single passage where they have ever met. Why would he be antagonistic? I mean sure maybe that snide space wolves attitude combined with a health dose of get off my lawn, but still its not like Guilliman kicked him in the junk for a laugh in front of the emperor back in the day or something.
@@dr.rotwang there was a recent book about Space Wolves, can’t recall the name, but Chapter Master Valrak talks about it at length on his channel. Anyway, Grimnar calls a massive council to decide what to do with Guilliman’s return and the primaris, Bjorn outright tells him not to trust Bobby and that his words are laced with poison, or something like that. Understandable, considering Bjorn was beside Russ when he and Guilliman almost went to war because of Codex Astartes.
I honestly believe the high lords and the inquisition are gonna have a rough go when he returns.

dont forget that Russ never felt part of fenris and the wolves. He resented the way his sons saw him. He always felt like he was more than just a warrior and an executioner. I remember reading a line somewhere describing Russ as a genius man in animal clothes and the Lion as an animal in human clothes. Hiding his true self behind the image of a barbarian. So with this said I think he would just accept the primaris without a second thought. His mind quickly calculating the added manpower it gives him.
But he would probably be pissed as hell seeing the state of the galaxy. Guilliman will need to convince him that they need to work with it for now. otherwise Russ would storm the palace himself.

We tend do tend to forget how intelligent normal Astartes are, let alone their Primarchs. Russ would know opposing Guilliman would be disastrous for humanity and thus he will side with him. He'll probably shout at him, point out the errors he made, possibly punch him, but he will work with him in the end. Both Russ and Jaghatai would be relatively easy for Guilliman to work with, he'd just ask them rather then command them. "It would help a lot if you could stamp out that waaaaagh, can we rely upon you?". I think the Lion's pride would make him te hardest to work with.
What do you mean we don`t know anything about Dorn? He`s been in the imperial palace all this time inside a centurion armor to keep the Emporer company, and this is canon as fuck.

What if Russ growed older and instead of going all out on Magnus, he goes there and tries to apologize? Could open a complete new Arc.
Hypothetical: what if the Tree of Life Russ is supposedly hunting for is actually the Eldar goddess of life, Isha? And, as a result, invades the Garden of Nurgle to recover her and help the Emperor heal.
It is they're not going to say he went in there to get Isha. And then for his Good deed they're going to release khan to his white scars in the web way. Which will cause death guard invasion also.bigger picture what will big E be resurrected as or in ;-)
The moment he captures her, isn't literally every Eldar Craftworld going to be in his ass all the way to Terra (assuming he somehow makes it that far)? 🤔
@@henryviiifake8244 that depends if they have Khan because technically he's not kidnapping her he's rescuing her and maybe that was what the plan was to rescue her to resurrect the emperor in a machine. But it makes sense white scars go in the web way where was the last time Khan was and then on top of that it's a trade-off kind of deal for him rescuing her she makes them release k h a n and for protecting her he will resurrects the emperor because he shows the human side of humanity

russ brings back Isha from the warp goes and finds his fallen brothers first and brings them back before returning to the emporer and healing him the emporer awakens and prepares for the battle vs chaos and the redemption and slaying of his wayward sons ,knowing that it is just a prelude to the real fight vs the tyranids which invade terra
I would like to think that the remaining loyalist primarchs would grow closer after the heresy with the emperor gone, malcador gone Sangunius gone there would be a lot of sorrow sadness and anger going around. I bet Guilliman and russ will have some good scenes in the scouring united in a shared guilt at not being there to help the emperor and save Sangunius
I love to see the Khan, Russ and Corax all meeting up somewhere in the Warp and all coming out somewhere with the help of Sanginius.
If he got the "tree of life" and the King in Yellow is with him. V line to Terra while f everything up. Ending in the big E partially resurected (Like Ynned)
If not Tell Guilliman to piss off, gather all the wolves to legion size and start crusaiding on Imperium Nhilus. All while dening Dante offers on being his warden

Vulkan will return when the nine relics have returned - my guess is he's put a ninth of his essence in each one. Which means his perpetuality will activate when they're all together
The Lion is still sleeping like a teenager
And finally Valdor will be the giant in Trayzn's collection
Out of everyone to potentially return, I believe it will be Ferrus Manus as an Imperial daemon Primarch leading the Legion of the Damned.

Valdor is building a huge army of loyalist daemons, winged space marines and custodes in a golden city located in the warp. He is also known as the King in Yellow

Leman Russ after speaking to Logan Grimnar: "Those Inquisition bastards did what?!"
The Imperium has a long list of problems right at the moment. The first and biggest is simply that it has been badly run for millennia. This is a problem best suited to Guilliman to solve. Russ hasn't got the patience for political intrigues or organizational matters and isn't very interesting in taking up those kinds of a tasks. Since Guilliman has not done anything excessive, like trying to elevate himself to the position of Emperor, there really isn't much for them to disagree about there. Where Russ *can* make a huge contribution is off on crusade. Guilliman is overextended trying to reorganize the Imperium back to some degree of its prior efficiency while also having to fight enemies throughout the galaxy. Russ could take on a lot of the military burden, buying Guilliman breathing room to restructure. Frankly, many factions might realize that they prefer Guilliman's professionalism to Russ's passion and would be happy if the second Primarch to return gathered some Astartes and went off to go fight the Imperium's enemies at a safe distance from Terra or Mccragge.

I feel like you missed out on what leman would do to the inquisition. I think he would cause major internal waves as well. I feel he would take it to them for daring for attack his pack when they were in the right for the first war on Armageddon. I think it would be mostly good for the imperium but a sub plot of him going after the inquisitors who fuck with space marines would make a return much more interesting. I know they arnt his kids but i feel he would take immense offence if he hears about the astral claws in the third war for Armageddon as well. Also i just want to see russ meet Bjorn and give him a hug. I think it would be very wholesome for him to give the oldest boy a big fatherly hug while the whole chapter had a massive feast
Many high lords of terra would die
Wolves cutting their way through hordes of demons. Getting overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Suddenly the air temperature all around them drops dramatically as an ice cold wind blows across the battlefield. Snow begins to softly fall on the ground. The howl that comes on the wind pierces their very souls, a howl that has not been heard since the days of the heresy. It was in this moment that the demons understood just how very fucked they were.
I'd shout with joy. THAT'S what would happen.
First, I would enjoy knowing what he was doing in the warp
maybe a book or something about him travelling through the warp and learning along the way, with each chapter another major point in his journey. Whether it be finding Isha and the tree of life (which I hope it is that sounds dope as fuck) or just killing traitors in their own realm, since dying in the warp is a final death for daemons.
My major hope though is that they don't just make him a fucking werewolf, give me space Odin born of learning of the proper warp, strengthened by wisdom and willpower. Imagine an old, grizzled Russ walks out of the warp in a super tuff battle G'man, or even Dante. Daemons everywhere, then Russ out of the warp (Isha can be there too depending on the reason of Russ being in the warp.) now that is something I would love to see, it would up the stakes as well as bring in another primarch, since the coming of Russ foretells the wolf-time. Meaning GW has an excuse to bring in more chaos, reveal more about the Tyranids, or even reveal Necrons being the secret main villains all along.
Gulliman, "Big Brother Russ welcome back, our Father has me leading the Imperium but I need a warrior to lead our forces against our enemies."
Russ, "Just point me to them and I'll get it done, but first I'm having a drink with my son Bjorn, care to join us?"
personally, I think the reason GW hasn't released Leman Russ is because he's not an ultrasmuff. Although I will say, before Forgeworld started the primarch range, Leman Russ was the only primarch to have an offical GW model. He was released back in Rogue Trader, and he is TINY.
he will show up at the fang fully unanouced in the middle of the feast of the great wolf, and wonder where his placement is, while the felhanded is somehow crying as a dreadnaught, and possibly asking why he wasnt worthy to go with him

Would be interesting to see a group of Grey Knights helping Russ to get out of the Warp.

Also let me just say Russ and the Space Wolves are the most lit chapter. We need them to break up all the monotony and add some more fun to the grim dark 😂
The one meeting I am waiting for is meeting of the Wolf King and Bjorn, A meeting I think will break Russ's heart when he sees what has become of his champion and the one son he prostrated himself before.
Russ and Guilliman (aka Wolverine and Cyclops) would be interesting to see in the current completely chaotic 40k universe. I have a feeling that he'd be as much as a help as a pain in Roboute's blue berries.
Ghost Manus, the fallen primarch of the Ironhands, should return leading a rebooted range of the Legion of the Damned. Possibly even communing with the Emperor or Gilman. Or even bringing a stop to one of Fulgrim's raids. How would Gilaman react to Ghost Manus?

A Russ/Gulliman reunion would be very fascinating. Russ plays the barbarian, but he is far shrewder than most of his opponents anticipate. Guilliman is civilized...but he wouldn't have any issue with doing terrible, barbaric things if needed.
I DO want to see a scene where Russ challenges the Primaris to a drinking contest and wins. By two drinks, and collapsed on top of the pile of the drunk Primaris, but still!

Like I discuss with someone else on tweeter, I think if Russ should come back he should come back as a wise warrior. He was Thor now he is more like Odin. Coming in and guiding the "young" Roboute.and the Imperium.
There are only 3 good choices for returning primarchs. The Lion, The Wolf, Dorn. All the others just don't have the direct impact that the imperium really needs right now. Dorn would likely be the worst of these. If he tried to focus on reinforcing terra. He would likely do great if he goes aggressive, but does not have the centuries of combat experience that the other 2 have. The Lion would likely be the best choice, but given the nature of the video. The advantages of having Russ as the next primarch to show up. Russ is the most likely of the 3 to have a good working relationship with each other. Even if Russ goes off doing his own things from time to time. Guilliman would understand it's in Russ nature. Given the Lions ego. It would be interesting for him to show up if after Russ and Guilliman had been holding things together for a while, without anyone else.
If it were to be Russ next. I would like to see his character improve. For him to think more. To be less likely, to go off recklessly. I want to see him more trusting of his loyalist brothers, and less fond of the traitors. His character has been written in 2 opposing directions. More often then not. He is portrayed. As head strong and reckless. The best writing about Russ. Portray him as a barbarian in appearance, and a loyal thoughtful leader. Full of insight and wisdom, not often shown. I remember reading a speech he gave to his marines. Talking about how noble the average guardsman was, because they didn't have genetic enhancement, power armor, hard hitting bolt weapons. He said not to look down on them for they had none of these advantages, yet still they fought. Having Russ come next. Gives a great opportunity for his character to develop in all the great ways it could be developed. Were he does not need to be in the shadow of other primarchs, during the story development.
I would love to read about Russ meeting up with his sons again, especially him having a short presumably happy conversation with ragnar jabbing the crimson fuckup in the eye with that golden toothpick of his.
If Russ did come back and start against the Thousand Sons it might be a repeat of the old days. Taking with him the Sisters of Silence at least and maybe a bit more. It would be a burning of prospero part 2 or 2.0 depending on how you saw it. But this time with both parties knowing the old dance steps and trying to figure out new ones to change what happened.
well, the first thing that comes to mind about what the Wolf King would do... is demand a good ale; he's parched. After that he'd then have to deal with the shouts of denial of who he is from the Wolves, even though they know who he is, and he'd have to prove himself (probably with Bjorn watching on and heckling him for good measure). Once THAT is all out of the way (along with trying to not accept the Spear of Russ because apparently he kept losing/forgetting the bloody thing all of the time), he'd tell his forces to muster: it's time for them to go and do some Space Wolf stuff and to remind people just who they are, thus causing a distraction and letting Guilleman get a better handle on things.
I think a lot of this is under the assumption that this will be the Russ of 10k years ago. Like Corax he's the only other primarch to we assume to have disappeared with a purpose unlike Dorn Vulkan or Jaghati. Will the Russ who emerges be the same as the one who left all those years ago. Will he be the same relatively wild barbarian king full of vigor, or will he be akin to Odin as opposed to the Thor he seemed to embody. Wiser, perhaps more broken and somber. I think that a meeting with such a changed brother would be so much more interesting than to simply have Roboute have the Russ of old return. Imagine it if you will the Russ who simply does not act in the manner that Roboute expects or plans for as a consequence of 10000 years in the warp. Will he be some monster akin to the shadowy demonic figure that Corax appears to be? Or will it be something else. I for one would love to see him more of a rune priest upon his return. The very thing he once distrusted Magnus for having been some dormant force unlocked by his time saturated in the immaterium.
Rho first off another great video, love me some Russ!! I agree with everything you say, especially Russ taking control of all his Sons and attacking Magnus in a rematch of the battle Prospero. He would then strike out as Bobby G’s executioner going after all his other fallen brothers. Hopefully he comes back as Oldman Russ/Odin hybrid who would actually see the point of using the Spear of Russ for once. There are a few points you missed though,
1. Russ would have some choice words for the Inquisition after the months of shame.
2. I hope Bjorn slugs him when they come face to face for leaving him behind the. They both laugh and get over it.
3. Russ has had hints at a return and what he’s been up too besides to quest for the tree of life, Magnus remarked to a statue of Russ that he knew exactly where he was but didn’t want talk about that and if Russ is in Nurgles garden it makes sense for Magnus to not wanting to invoke another chaos gods name that wasn’t his own gods.
4. The most important clue was that Logan Grimnar himself saw Russ fighting The Thousand Sons on Fenris during the siege of Fenris event and knew it was his father come to aid his sons in their hour of greatest need even if just for that battle.
So honestly Russ isn’t that far off from making his return for real.
I wonder if Russ can feel Corax, almost like Odins ravens.
To add I just want to say I don't think the Emporer quite needs Russ out of the warp yet. He's just too much of a problem for chaos in the warp to have him come out.
I think you may be going off of situations of the past with Russ and not the current state of things.
With the Emperor being more psychically active in the warp now than ever before, there is no doubt that if Russ is alive, the Emperor has been in communication with him.
So I believe Russ would be made aware of Guilliman and the Primaris. Also remember the warp is a reflection of the material, so Russ would already be aware of the current state of the imperium, the Primaris guided by the psychic consciousness of the Emperor somewhat. Also keep in mind that like Corvax, Russ may have also taken upon himself an ethereal manifestation. As Corvax is a raven for the Emperor... Russ would be a wolf. The Wolf of the Warp. He has also taken his wolf pack with him as well. In this way, like Corvax, Russ may never return... At least not like we once new him.
But I see no butting of heads between Guilliman or Russ should Russ return. Russ has witnessed from the other side and from the Emperor himself the decay of the Imperium he would have better understanding of what needs to be done because he isn't in a coma or suspended animation like Guilliman was. I believe the Primarchs that entered into the warp have a better chance of understanding and communication with the Emperor. They would applaud the Primaris project because it is within the Emperor's will and they would already know that before returning from the warp. They would not be so naive in thinking that the Primaris project is tampering with the emperor's work, but it is a ordained blessing of the emperor's work. They would also know Guilliman would not be doing this except for to restore and maintain the Emperor's vision and will.
The only Primarchs that may have a problem with Primaris at 1st are those that may not be or have been in communication with the emperor through the warp or those that have no knowledge of what has happened to the state of mankind and the imperium... Like Johnson, Khan, Vulkan, or Dorn.
I struggle to see Russ having serious conflict with Guilliman. Russ would be content to let Guilliman be Lord Commander of the Imperium so long as he continues to allow Fenris and the Space Wolves to be fairly autonomous, and Guilliman has no love of the Ecclesiarchy. So I see Russ and Guilliman being on the secular/radical side of any Imperium civil/cold war. The Lion on the other hand....
It really should be Russ next! I think you are right that Guilliman would not know for sure what Russ would say/do and would be apprehensive so that would be so fun. In the end Russ would be the real brother Guilliman needs and would have a tense moment but then give Guilliman a big hug to annoy him and at least in public support him. In private he may have a few choice words but they would work together as long as Guilliman lets Russ do it in his own way, which I think the new Guilliman that is more humble would know and act accordingly.
Honestly, I imagine Roboute would share a rare moment of vulnerability to Leman Russ, which would shock the Wolf King a fair bit and realize just how stressed his poor brother is

We assume he stays the same. But if he lived for 10k years. Maybe Russ would be the one lounging. Maybe he would grow up and be more king than wolf instead of running into things and make everything worse.
That presupposes that Russ experienced time the same way as the rest of the universe. It could have been 100,000 years or 50.

But I would think it would be interesting to see the passage of time on a primearch who has first hand experience in the worp. Maybe he would grow to resemble Oiden and act like an All father instead of the brash wolf king.
It's better than him stepping into the worp and only a day passes for him and 10k years in real space.

I think Gulliman and Russ would be a good duo - Gulliman gives Russ the tools, Russ wields the axe.
I think the returned Russ would be very different though - he is likely to come back as more of an Odinic Sage figure with his warp powers unleashed, quite different from the hot head of the Crusade. Russ may take umbridge with Gulliman trafficking with Daemons for instance...

Russ returns. He sees the excrement impacting the rotating airflow device all around him. He hears of Magnus's new shenanigans. He sees world after world on the arguably strong side of the Imperium falling to Chaos.
And he is PISSED. He calls Guilliman out for it. For being Guilliman. Boring, reactive, calculating Guilliman.
Guilliman sees this coming, he says you know what? You're right. You fix it, Warden. And Russ gets pointed at any problem he can see, with the total independent authority to hunt anywhere and everywhere in Imperium Sanctus.
If it is Russ I 100% hope this is how it plays out.

Wouldn't he learn of the Emperors death once he wakes up? I think he'd go rampage on the nearest chaos threat in search for answers, and then go grumble on Fenris for a while and then he'd meet up with Guilliman, grumble some more until agreeing to some form of tactic-template and then buggering off again. It would definitely turn into some great books.
I would however really enjoy a setting where Russ and the Lion are both back and helping Guilliman. Would be a really nice trio - Judge, Jury and Executioner

I honestly see the most important primarchs for the Imperium is Guilliman, Dorn and Russ/The Lion. Guilliman to un-ass the buerocracy, The Lion/ Russ to prosecute the wars to keep the Imperium intact, and then Dorn to bring the Fists along behind to turn them into impenetrable bastions as they go. Of course backing up the Wolves as they go. I say Wolves primarily because, as much as the Lion would work, the Wolves not giving a damn about the codex, this would allow them to concentrate power much more quickly. Obviously, the next would need to be someone to lead the Imperium as Lord Commander. I don't think Russ would want that as much as we believe. I think he would feel the most purpose as Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military, while leading a reformed Space Wolves legion. Obviously Guilliman doesn't really want that job, since when Imperium Secondus was a thing, he said "nah, not my thing". The question is who, I honestly say Vulkan would be the best fit. A strong personality, while also being truly caring about Humanity. His work would be to improve the situation of humanity. This in turn weakens the Dark Gods of the warp. Because, as the suffering of mankind abates, the power that seeps into the immaterium from that emotional turmoil decreases. That trifecta to me would be the most important. Vulkan coming along as well would be outstanding, especially since he must be somewhe. This being obvious being a perpetual. Just my two pence.

All I can hope for is they tie in Ragnar Blackmane throwing Russ' spear into the warp and it allows Russ to find the spear and his way back. How epic would that meeting be Russ and Ragnar and possibly the 13th since Ragnar has fought with the wulfen in his storyline, and overcome the wulfen rage himself.
Would love to see Russ and the Lion both return at the same time.
Russ would not care about the the history of what Guilleman had done in the past, he would care about the idea of changing his bloodline. I agree that he would go straight to Guilleman, unless the big had sent him a vision that the tree of life was to be used to kill the him. I would not be surprised if it would take something like that to kill his physical form. As the big E is getting stronger because of the WARP, I would expect the big E to come back in some other transcended form. First of course there would be a big ass fight.
Should that not be the case, I think that Ross would want his legion back, he may allow those of his blood some freedoms, but each of the new chapters leaders I suspect would want in someway to challenge him, to make sure there loyalty was not misplaced.
He may know of where a store of genseed is and start to get more traditional space wolves back.
I am sure he would punch Guilleman, maybe even have a proper fight, I know he would bring merry hell to the inquisition and some of there leaders would die.
Whatever happened he would take the fight back to Chaos. I dont think that he would just be an older and wiser wolf lord.
Since space wolves have very big Nordic ties I think that gallman's going to be a little punk and hurry up and give russ war chief title.kinda not hard to see that really. There will be a religious civil war and the dark Angels will take over that there will be a big invasion Dorn will take care of that there will be a desperate measure situation Khan will be there for that and then when there's this last Hope situation Russ will be there for that as warchief
Both Lion and Russ need to comeback at the same time, the animosity between them and Guilliman's current attitude make a civil war, a War of Three Primarchs.
my head canon is that Russ has a shard of Magnus in his head and it talks to him, being his only companion during the 10,000 years. The Shard of Brotherhood. It could serve as part of a greater redemption arc for Magnus or at least half of him.
That animosity ended when they got to Terra, Russ was very upset that the big cat went missing

That trio of differing personalities would be so tense, but they all would understand that there was a reason they came back, so they would…maybe temporarily set aside their differences for the betterment of the Imperium.
I can see the reunion as almost a scene from supernatural. Leman calling gulliman a boring sanctimonious shit, gulliman calling russ an uncultured barbarian.
A few beats then they both grin and hug. (Que manly teats backslaps and comments about missing the other despite all the crap then a few gallons of fenrisian ale)
His actual return to the material universe would involve lightning and saving bjorns life (with some more insults going both ways)
I feel like for a proper return of Russ we'd also need a return if valdor due to how closely they're linked

Just watched the 'what if Dorn returned' video. I think he would be great, but Leman would be the ultimate. Best defense is a good offense. Best offense is a good offense. Russ first, then Dorn, that's what Guilliman would prefer. The Emporer already has the ultimate manager(RG) and physical infrastructure (the ultras). Now the Emperor needs a sword (Russ), and shield (Dorn) to reclaim the empire.
I’d imagine that the inquisition would be rather pissed to hear of Russ’s return after their actions during the month of shame. Considering they absolutely despise the wolves for that.

Just like the Blood Angels the Space Wolves would be reorganized into Legion...He and the 13th Company would be under the scrutiny of the Inquisitors. This is my belief that 13th Company would be allmost or heavily compromised of Wolfen. His return could as simple as steeping out of the Warp.
Russ would be a great compliment to Gman... maybe even better than LeJ. Russ has the aggressiveness needed to take the fight to the enemy, but I think his compassion for the common man is a bit better than the Lion which is probably needed in this time period. More so, though, think about the friction in the hierarchy. Yes, Russ is the executioner, but he's not a primarch with a need to dominate high strategy. He would be excellent as the offensive figurehead underneath Gmans grand strategy role.
If the 'Tree of Life' thing is Ishtar, as speculated, and Russ rescues her, then that could tie in with Guilliman's doings with the Ynnari.
