Sasaki's hometown is Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, which was greatly damaged by the 3.11 earthquake. He himself lost his home in the tsunami and lost his father and grandparents. Twelve years later, on March 11th, he made his first appearance on the international stage.
I remember having read about that at some point last year, after that perfect game he threw in NPB; as a man from America's Midwest, I cannot truly comprehend the horror Sasaki went through 12 years ago. 😢 That said, for him to become to be the best pitcher right now outside the Major Leagues, not to mention that he got the win today (despite a slow start), is a testament to the human spirit. 💪🏻
