  • Pro Staff contributor, Cody Butler, will be hunting with a recurve bow this fall in Nebraska and Kansas. In this episode of The Setup, Cody shows us the bow he will be using and offers tips on how to setup the bow for accurate shooting. He will come back in a second episode that we will air in few days to discuss how he bare shaft tuned the bow to get perfect arrow flight. This is a method that will work for anyone shooting a traditional bow.

Me too. I started bowhunting in 1977. I was shooting a recurve when the first compounds came out. I saved my lawn mowing money and bought a Bear Whitetail Hunter. I only went back to a recurve for one season (1992 I think) and that showed me that I was not good enough with these bows (even after hundreds of hours of practice) to feel really good about hunting with them. I may give it another try one day, but for now I am going to stick with my compound.

I started trad hunting about 5 years ago and haven't turned back. Just stay positive and keep with it.

@bill-winke happy to see you guys back. I watched your show religiously since 2011. Oddly enough, I even got to meet one of your old interns, Jon Lewis, while on recruiting duty. His mom was an aide at a school I recruited and he stopped by to visit while he was home.

I have a couple of really old recurves too. I shot some deer with them, but in the end I was just not effective enough even on 15 yard shots to feel good about it all the time. Maybe some day.

Your grandpa's Bear Custom Kodiak takedown bow is a very nice top of the line bow. It would be very nice to honor his legacy to take your first deer with his bow.

Trad hunting is satisfying to me.
50 years experience in woodsmanship allows one to get within 15 yards of a decent buck up on a ridge. Killing it with traditional equipment surpasses the new high tech shooting of compounds at 30 yards and beyond. Doing that from the comfort of a blind over a plot doesn't compare. Sorry Bill.
Some of us Dream Big slightly different.
Looking forward to the trad segment this year.

That's fine. You can hunt them with whatever you want - any way you want. As long as it is legal, I am for you. Good luck to you this fall.

Enjoyed the setup demonstration with the exception of poor lighting.
A light behind the camera will help.

Thanks for the share Cody. Shot my first two deer with a Red Wing Hunter . Wing bows made in Texas by Bob Lee. 1973 , 1975. Some good memories you brought back, so a huge show of support from me. I shoot a Hoyt Redwrk now , so I've been at it a while. The best of luck to you and Bill's team.
