OK, I also can tell a few words about this bike. About neutral - true... It's much easier to get N fron 2nd gear than from 1st and much easier to get when engine is cold and also on new oil. At city I usually use only top case which is enough in 99% situations and also I've got my bike with F800ST cases included which are significantly smaller (but telescopic). But all 3 cases and backpack were enough for me in 4 days trip. About fuel economy my best result was about 360km on highway with average over 100km/h which is quite close to what BMW claims. Yeah fuel gauge is strange I guess because complex fuel tank confuguration and level sensor being placed somewhere under riders butt whith fuel pump. This bike is quite versatile. BMW calls it sport-touring but I think it's rather touring. Last year I've done journey from Yaroslavl to St. Petersburg via Vologda which is about 900km in one day. Tired a little bit but it was a pleasure I was enjoed by road and by riding. From Yaroslavl to Moscow and back (about 600km) - no problem. This year I've planned a journey to Finland but than this virus ruined all my plans...

I have had 8 of the BMW motorcycles and 2 of the early cars available in the U.S. 2 were R1100RS, 1 R1100S, K75S , K75RT, R80, R100 and R100RS. Of those, I enjoyed the R1100RS, R1100S, and the R100RS the most. The K75S was a good trip motorcycle but a bit top heavy and not as easy to city ride but very smooth (engine has a counter balance shaft). Each of those was comfortable on longer trips. I have not ridden for a few years and have a V-Rod Harley Davidson that is comfortable and powerful but heavy and has a long wheel base. It is not designed for travel. I am now looking for a lighter motorcycle that is still heavy enough to deal with side wind and yet lighter for the strength I have now to manage the weight in city riding. Looking at a variety of the motorcycles that are used in the range of the F800GT. Maintenance cost and parts for BMW's got expensive and that is a factor. I had to disassemble the entire fairing and tank to get to the air filter on the R1100S that took over an hour with an assortment of Allen wrenches due to location of the screws. There were over a dozen on the fairing and then others to remove the tank. I am getting the itch to ride again and the F800GT is a nice design with features that are familiar to me. Thank you for the video and your comments on your experience. Regards, Ed Dentino, East Peoria, IL U.S. A.

Another awesome video I like this kind of video more like it's a real down to earth daily interaction with the bike it's very helpful thank you. I'm so looking forward to getting my GT in a couple weeks these kind of videos help a lot. And about filtering Canada does not allow filtering so I have no problems with it at all and our Toronto drivers are similar to your London drivers I don't think I filter anyhow.

For the record - I agree about the Neutral comments and the ones below. It's nigh on impossible at times to get the gearbox into neutral after a long run. The tank gauge, yes. Fill to the very brim and set the trip meter then go for 200 miles. Refuel when the light comes on. You have another 20 miles, I have pushed my luck to 32 miles and got away with it. My best was 220 miles out of a tank.
The panniers, yes. Try finding a photobag to fit inside the larger one, there are not that many around that do.
My biggest single negative is the screen. For a tourer it is far too small. I changed mine for a Puig, life is more bearable now.
A great bike, I have had mine for eight years now.

I prefer this style pannier to the weird semi soft material ones, with the ratchet mechanism, I had on my K12s
A small ish top box can be very handy - esp. leaving the panniers off for commuting

Don't fret the neutral search is normal my ST is brilliant my R is getting there and was very stiff from 5500 miles till now. Tjere are a lot of bikes that do this. I use my rear racks more than the panniers . Fab engine! great fuel consumption and the belt drive has no 1st gear clunk. I would buy one again full stop.

Surprised to hear you say it's great around town. Mine was the worst round-town bike I've had: slow steering, feels heavy, hardly ever gets out of second gear, all while blasting hot air onto your left leg. I wouldn't say I hated it, but I did sell it after two months. Great fuel economy though, I'll give you that - although it does need the premium high-octane stuff to run properly.

    • @f800gt76

It's OK I've chosen F800GT as my first bike. I considered only touring bikes. Other tourists are over 1000cc (R1200RT, Triumph Trophy) and too heavy. Small displacement is not enough to carry luggage, pillion and yourself on highways with decent speed and overtakes also would be an issue. In midweight you only has F800GT, new F900XR, Honda NT700V and... maybe chineese CF Moto 650TK. This one is very predictable, packed with useful electronics has low maintenance belt drive (forget about chain lube!) has decent stock windscreen and heated grips (best option ever!). About riding with pillion notice that in some places there are limitations for that for newbies (like in Russia, but nobody cares here). I picked up passengers a few times and they found it very comfortable. Best for it's price I guess. You can check out my videos (they are in Russian but I did most of them with subtitles)

It might be interesting to note your height & weight. I am 51 and my CBR600F was giving me pain to my back and wrists. I currently have a Tracer 700 whose riding position I like but I find the (comfort) seat is very cruel to my family jewels. They say BMWs are comfy but the riding position does seem too sporty. I am 184cm and weigh 107kgs and I wonder if this would indeed be a comfortable bike to ride for long time (up to a few hours at a time). Thanks for this video.

Did the reviewer ever think about what it’s like to ride this bike on a warm day. This bike is an absolute nightmare to ride in warm weather. I live in a desert region and I can tell you that the heat between your legs is unbearable. The frame itself transfers heat to the inner legs and is not enjoyable ridding above 70 degrees. Love elsewhere when buying this bike if you live in warm climates

re the panniers & bags, have a look for Shad inner bags. Shad make the BMW panniers & the inner bags for their SH36 panniers fit straight inside perfectly and there a lot cheaper than BMW bags...circa £22 & great quality. Great blog by the way...be really useful if you could do a video on the maintnance side re how many miles & what sort of failures you have had IF any other than service items...like those very expensive fitting of BMW bulbs :-)

    Hello from Portugal

  • @GaryMCurran
    @GaryMCurran 2 роки тому

Thank you. I'm looking for my first bike. It was funny, after I got my endorsement here in the U.S. I was told by three people to get a Yamaha FJR1300. I thought that was pretty big for a new, first time rider, but had I gotten it, I would have learned. Unfortunately, about that time, my life took a serious downturn in fortunes, and that endoresment was five years ago, and I'm still bikeless. Things are getting better, and I'm hoping to be able to get a bike soon. If I could find a used K1200 or K1300GT, that would be awesome, but the F800GT is a nice bike, and I know where there's one for sale. I think for me, with the price of gas going through the roof here in the States, the F800 would probably be a better choice, for a number of reasons.
So, I found this video rather interesting and your commentary also interesting. I don't know if you still have this bike or not. Could you tell me what comfort seat you installed on that? Also, had you considered a top box to go along with the side cases? It's my understanding that Shad makes the cases for BMW, so BMW themselves may not have had too much say in the design of the cases, athough final say would be theirs.
Did you do any other mods to the bike, upgraded horn, driving lights, etc.? I'd be interested in those, as well.
    Thanks for a great video.

@@TheForeigner68 I certainly can't afford a new bike, so what I'm looking for is used. I was thinking a lower mileage RT from 2008/2009 forward. When I saw 'low mileage', it's a BMW, they run forever. I'm thinking less than 60,000 miles. I can get a 2012 RT for a little less than $8,000USD, whereas the 2013 F800GT is $6,500, although I could probably get them to come down to $6,000.
I like the RT because it is a bit bigger, I can sit tall in the saddle, and it has everything I want on it, heated grips, heated seats (I live in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S., where it's cold and damp (rainy) from October until June).
While this bike may not be available in a couple of months (the same can be said of the F800GT), I'm pretty sure I'd be able to get another, very similar bike, for about the same price. Surprisingly, there are a lot of BMW riders in this area.

I'd be interested to hear your views on the belt drive - costs, the ease with which it can be done by DIY mechanic, etc.
I see there's quite a difference between costs for the belt - between BMW, Wemoto, and other retailers

I've usually bought top quality Tsubaki chain & sprocks, and don't think I've ever paid more than £240. DIY so no labour.
