Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS Review (2017) | Sony a6000 Image Samples

  • The Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS is a staple lens that pairs really great with cameras like the Sony a6000 or a6300. Because of the OSS (optical stabilization) the lens can be used both in video as well as used with slow shutter speeds when taking photos. This video looks at both image and video samples with this lens combination. It's not a complete review as the rest will take a look at the auto-focusing capabilities in a later video.

    Ive been using the 50mm oss Aps-c version on my a6000 & a6500 I find it a fantastic lens... for my portrait/model work ...all decent reviews comparing the full frame 50 & the aps-c 50 ..all give it the oss - asp-c version...

    8 months late... Love this lens. I have the black version. No noise on at all. Beautiful bokeh. 50mm (75mm equivalent) is pretty long but great for portraits. Sharp and gorgeous. Some of the best pictures I've ever taken were with this lens. For a5000, a5100, a6000, a6300, definitely get the aps-c version. I owned the FE28 full frame lens with no OSS and shooting in an action situation with low light half of my pictures came out blurry. Also, I really believe that if you're shooting aps-c, you're best served with an aps-c lens. Also, this lens is pretty inexpensive so you can't go wrong.

    I was thoroughly confused as to which lens to choose- FE 55mm 1.8 lens without OSS or e lens with OSS. Though I attempted many a forum to find out about this , I am happy to say you explained it concisely and precisely. Thank you so much. Having a Sony a6000 I know that I will go for the lens with OSS because I have no plans to go for a full frame body.

    The oss on mine is dead silent. You might have an issue with yours. I would say that’s one of the best parts of this lens is that it’s so quiet even the autofocus :) 👍🏼

      Mine does make some noise. When I hit the shutter button to focus the noise is apparent sometimes, but not always. The OSS is noticeable only in a very quiet environment. I tried one at BestBUY and it did the same thing.

    I know this is an old video, but I bought my 50 Saturday I’ve noticed that the auto focus will not stop. It will focus, then re focus, then focus again all the while I’m waiting to take a shot. But I love the lens as I’m a new photographer. I’m going to try manual focus today, see if I can do any better.

    I have that lens for my A6000. Mine has a couple specks of dust inside the lens, but they don't appear in the picture. Yes, the OSS is kinda of noisy. It's a good lens, sharp photos and nice video in low light.

    the reason for better corner detail on fullframe lens, is due to the use of the center of lense only, the sweet spot of the lens, and the apc lens use the corner too

    the stabilize noise i think is from your used copy. i had 2 different copies of the 50mm OSS and both never had that noise at all. it was dead silent. i miss it i sold it to help fund my 18-104 f/4 for my 6300. im thinking about picking this up again. i miss it :(

    I have this lens for my A6000 as well as the 55mm/1.8 Zeiss for my A7ii, I love using the 50mm 1.8 OSS, and prefer using it over the Zeiss on my A6000. Sure the Zeiss is sharper and has the poppy Zeiss colours, but the OSS is very colourful as well, very nice creamy Bokeh characteristics (which I prefer over the Zeiss on APS-C), and the close focus distance is a full centimeter better so it's great for getting closeups of smaller objects, to the point I don't feel the need to get a dedicated Macro for my A6000 kit. Also, since my A6000 is a camera I drag with me everywhere, it's alot less worrisome to carry a lens that only set me back $280cad instead of a $1000+ Zeiss in case it gets lost or stolen. I can't praise the 50mm f/1.8 OSS enough, I don't think anyone needs a better 50 if you're just shooting APS-C - it's that good.

    I really want to like OSS but I've had several OSS lenses kept getting stuck and stopped working. The kit lens that comes with the a5000 is a 16-50mm OSS. I'd try to turn the camera off and the lens wouldn't return to the kind of storage mode. Just getting stuck about half way out and after several days it just stopped working completely. I've had it happen multiple times now. After awhile it's exhausting spending $200-$300 on lenses that keep failing that Sony won't fix. I really like their non OSS lenses though like the FE 50mm so I think that's probably the next best option especially if I'll eventually go to the a7 series eventually.

    How loud is the noise you're hearing? I just tried it on mine and I could barely hear anything. I can hear there aperture opening and closing when I turn the camera on and off, and when it's changing focus, but those are barely audible the camera makes a ton more noise when it locks on. If you're hearing anything louder than what you would expect from your other Sony lenses, then maybe there is some damage in that lens.

    hey camera guy! So I was trying the back button focus thing on the a6000 and somehow instead of it getting set up on the AEL button i thought is wasnt working then accidentally found it was setup on the dial button, which is fine I guess. Anyway can you go over back button focus and why or why not to use the camera this way? I still dont really understand the advantage or big deal about it other than the camera doesnt have to refocus everytime you hit the shutter button. Is that it? Actually I just set the BBF up to the AEL button, and then set autofocus tracking to the dial button. I'm thinking I kind of like this setup.

    Want to address couple of things I personally have the A6000 I’m a hobbyist snapper 💫
    1 I currently have the 1.8 oss silver and I love it !!!very sharp and crisp snaps. Thant been said I barely notice the vengeance on my lens it might be tour setup or just over used lens that hasn’t been kept in a clean environment also hasn’t been cleaned because I seen your lens and it looks rough man 🍺.
    I shoot a lot with this lens light and crisp shots 98.7%. It hunts with a breeze to find that sweet spot. Hood lens not that bad nice and tight funnel for that perfect shot.
    With video I have a AX53 Sony witch is 4K so I can’t really say much on the video on since I shoot Videos every day for work.
    Keep up the good work enjoy your knowledge.

    Hello friend, one question, do you recommend the Sony a6000 for long streams, I have a little doubt and fear since I do live streams on twitch and they are long maybe 4 or maybe 6 hours and obviously the camera will be connected to a fake battery connected to the electricity all the time, that's why the reason for my fear when streaming I don't know if the camera overheats they told me that the Lumix G7 doesn't overheat in video and I don't know which one to choose I would appreciate it if you gave me your opinion, I hope see your answers, thanks.

    So, IS there performance Degrading when using FULL Frame lenses on a APS-C body? I have heard that there is a performance as far as detail is lessened when using full-frame glass on an APS-C body. Is this a myth? I see in this video you compared a full-frame lens to the APS-C lens. The center's were sharp. So I am confused if you are better off with APS-C lenses or Full Frame Lenses on an APS-C body?! Thoughts? DO you have a Video on this??

    This is my favourite lens that I've bought for my APSC camera, I love how smooth the out of focus areas are but I have a question if you can help me that1cameraguy, is f1.8 on a cropped sensor the FF equivalent of f1.8? It's confusing me :D

    • @XDario91
      @XDario91 6 років тому +1

      F-number is the ratio of the system's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. Which means that any lens opened at 1.8 will let the same amount of light on the sensor, but the FF sensor is bigger so you're gonna have a brighter image. Your answer depends on how cropped is your sensor (sony is x1.5) so 1.8 x 1.5 = 2.7

  • @AshleeGurl84
    @AshleeGurl84 6 років тому

    Hummmm. . . just noticed in the video you were comparing 1.8 on the crop sensor and the full frame lens versions. You talked about the blurriness in the corners. This makes sense. I'd say that the full frame will be a better more consistent lens and here is why. With your depth of field when you shoot a flat wall and have the len's level as your focused area you'll lose the focus on those outer edges because it's further way than your center point. Take a string tie it to your tripod then take that string to the center point of your picture then try to move it to the corners of your frame with out moving your measurement on the string.. This will show you the distance difference and therefor show you that those outer edges will be softer focused because of that depth of field.

    Mine is quiet, Sold the FE (full frame), which has a loud, slow, hesitant AF. It is sharp but try to focus on someone's face indoors with that, or outdoors with the lens stopped way down. Sony should keep the optics and update it with a better AF motor. With the 50mm OSS of APSC, no complaints, one of the few Sony lenses with the right price and features. AF so much better than the FE version. Just wish they would update it to a less scratch prone finish.

    I've had two copies of this lens and I sure the noise wasn't there on the better copy but there was something on the more used one.
    After the profile is applied I would so this lens comes close to the 55mm when also used on a crop body. At two or three times the cost you still get value for money with the 55mm so both are excellent choices.

      Mohsin Sait same.. i do video so this one just tops the sigma for me.. i need the image stabilisation

    • @mohsin_sait
      @mohsin_sait 5 років тому

      @@mike-birks I know. But this is too zoomed in, like an 85mm equivalent! If Sony had like a 16 or 24mm f1.8 or 1.4 with OSS then it'd be golden. I know they have that for full frame but that's way too expensive, APS-C versions would be much cheaper.

      Sigma 16mm 1.4 could be good for you then.. but then that’s double the price

      @@mike-birks Yup. But I could sell my 16-55 kit lens. I'm still thinking if I should keep that as it's compact and easy to carry around.

      Sigma much sharper and better bokah! But no oss. This sony is not as sharp as sigma but has oss and it's a native lens.

    please let me know since it it 50 mm lens while using it in a6000 does it become 75 mm lens, and can it zoom or not?

    • @waltervanlille2263
      @waltervanlille2263 5 років тому

      Yes, it's equivalent to 75mm full frame lenses. It's a fixed lens, so it doesn't zoom.

    Thank you for that review. Your backyard looks terrible though. There are some beautiful rose fields just east of town, that would make your outdoor background pop. Or orchards of trees just west of town.

    Your results are consistant with those lenses. The 50mm crop lens is all around a better lens for the a6000 and has a tony bit more clarity. Dx0mark tests showed that. However, I have to disagree a bit with your reasoning in this video. There is really no point in buying the FE 50mm at all if you have an a6000. Doesn't even matter if you will later upgrade to a full frame or not. Just sell your crop lens and move up to a good full frame lens. If you are going to upgrade to a full frame camera anyway then it stands to reason you are becoming serious about photography so image quality will be more important and you wont be happy with that lens and sell it anyway. Use the money from selling it to go with the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 instead....much better lens!

    Can you do iPhone X vs A6500/6300 video and image quality tests. I know mirrorless and DSLR is different compared to the phones.
