Istanbul is definitely one of the most unique places I’ve ever visited and this week we dove deep into what makes this place so freaking fascinating. I ate lamb intestines and was hand fed by a stranger. I learned sometimes being a concubine can have it’s perks. I learned that dressing a baby up like royalty is not as easy as it sounds. And I may or may not have been smacked around by a large hairy Turkish Man.

it seems like Istanbul is ahead of us (most cities) when it comes to food culture. I live in Chicago and visited Istanbul many times, and you know Chicago is well known for its food scene in the US but Istanbul feels like a millennia ahead us.

This is thanx to the unique position of Istanbul being a keystone for centuries on the SILK ROAD Path to Europe. All business through Europe and Asia and Middle East went through here, with merchants from all over the world (literally) meet/gather/pass through here! Almost you could say, everyone added their own unique salt and pepper (sauce) to culture, hence food :). Blend of the world food with local touches.
Pide (turkish) Pitta bread, pita bread, pizza bread (lahmacun=aka turkish pizza, is a derivative/type of pide as in one is thin crust, other is thick crust) ... Kind of comes from here. We may not have invented it, but we made it popular (kind of). Similarly, Turkish Coffee: Was originally from Ethiopia! Some merchants took it to Middle East, but was not popular. Some merchants from Yemen brought it to Ottoman empire, it exploded! Then Venetian merchants took it to Europe, became nuke! Name stuck because of popularization.
People love food in turkey, (i mean preparation, cooking etc take certain amount of time, and people enjoy it) Thats why people like home made style cooking rather than western fast-food (frozen-microwaved/defrosted food), our fast food is still cooked properly. You could say it in spiritual way: You give the food your soul, and it gives you its taste in return!
I have been to US in 2003 during my MBA study. The family i stayed with always teased me (being middle easterner - i m/we are not, people usually can get offended being called arabs in turkey) always asked my opinion about their foods (only cooked rice with a rice cooker, and most food were frozen/defrosted heated food apart from take away restaurant foods). i would always say it was OK and with their kids and students totaling 12 people in the house, food was never finished/always left over, and microwaved a few times before it was finished after 2-3 days (polite way of describing, it was ok, edible food nothing special and blunt in taste). They kept asking and receiving the same answer, kind of offended as i never said it was good :) (it was not due to how i grew up eating fresh/cooked meal everyday) They called me spoiled one day, because i didnt say "good" and never used a microwave in my life up until that time (we had ovens/hobs). The family was into spirituality a lot and would try to get opinion out of me to go into heated discussions about religions etc due their "framed view" of my origin and religion. i always avoided it. But their food question and calling me spoiled, tripped my fuses. i told them i will answer their question and why they are wrong about me and my culture. Answered in a way they would understand. as i said before "You give the food your soul, and it gives you its taste in return". They cheekily challenged me to cook and prove! They had a pot for just over a gallon in size (water it would store for boiling). I found an online shop that sold turkish bean and rice and some sausage (we call sucuk, you d call pepporoni!) I prepared the bean soup you seen in this video, with a little bit of my own touch. I could say i cooked for like 25 people worth in that giant pot! Bean soup, if you ever cooked, it takes ages to cook (mine took close to 4hrs stirring and slow cooking) When i finished cooking, they were anxious about it and were wondering why it took so long, and kind of smirking at me :). It was my time to go to classes in the evening, so i only tasted it to make sure it was ok. Told them how to eat it at dinner. I came back at 9.30pm that night. Wanted to try the soup, but unfortunately, it was too tastey and everyone had 2-3 bowls of it and not even half a bowl left for me. Noone from the family ever asked me about food nor teased me again :) The kids even asked for the recipe for their parents :) During my graduation, my family came. I invited these people to a family dinner. I have only 1/1000th of the skills my mom had. imagine at the dinners, their jaws dropped about the variety and quality of food they ate. they litelly had a notebook with them asking my mom and aunt for the recipes :) all night.

Your massage was not rough enough man. ))) Massage in Turkish Hamam must be rough and painful. Once I told to tellak (the rubbing and massaging guy in hamam) I told I don't want rough massage. And he told me this massage is not manly pleasure, go to spa saloon if you want soft massage. In Hamam massage must be rough and painful. And after the hamam massage next day I felt really good. I really like your video editing and story telling style.
Also Harem is not a sexual fantasy area. It was more like a special school for girls. Girls in harem are educated on foreign languages, literature, music, sewing. And some of them were gifted to high degree managers and governers to get married. And those governers and high degree officers far from istanbul kept under control by their harem origined wives too.
You are a good story teller. And you are always wellcome to Turkey. And your little baby girl is sweet as Turkish deserts. Hugs and kisses from Izmir.

Turkish baths are unique , can't be mixed up with Roman baths as there is a big hygiene difference .In Roman baths everybody bathes in the same bath water , some even washed their clothes in it and that unhygienic tradition continued through out the dark ages in Europe , during Victorian times as well , even continued up untill 50's _60's in some parts of UK such as Birmingham and in Texas US but tradition was winding down of course . Some of you may still remember this saying "don't throw the baby with the water" . As for the Turkish baths , every bucket of water poured down on you goes down the drain with your dirt.

That was an amazing episode. I sailed the Med. as a Navy sailor and one of my favorite ports of call was Antalya Turkey, known for thier rugs, leather goods, hand-carved meershaum pipes (You order one day and come back a few days later for the pipe.... the work was exquisite!) and, of course, the Turkish food that was just shown. The best part were the local merchants, some of the friendliest people I have ever met (Free drinks while you shop for a rug, they must have shown me about 2 dozen rugs b4 I purchased one). Thanks for making this episode guys, bought back a lot of memories.

Ottoman Empire was multicultural place that prioritized survival, and success.... being a Turk was important but being useful to the Empire was more important in the eyes of the rulers, which is why Empire lasted for so long on 3 continents with dozens of foreign groups of people all preserving their own unique identity to this day.

Note, don’t buy them boxed you truly don’t know how long they’ve been packaged until you open the box. The ones to get are the open ones you buy per weight. Well done guys. You have some of the best cinematography on any of the UA-cam channels I subscribe too and your story telling is top notch. Keep them coming.

Another great episode. Your documentaries are the best of any of the sailing channels.

Fabulous, absolutely fabulous Parts 1 & 2. Refreshes my memory of the most interesting country I've visited and makes me want to return to Turkey once again. Great job documenting your excursions.
