- The XJR is in the shop and the tear down has begun. We are documenting the process to tear down the XJR engine and get to the head gaskets to replace them. This will be a multi part series so follow along for the progress and we hope you enjoy!

It is Greg once again from up here in Canada.
I called my shop the 1998 XJR is at to make sure they weren’t just ordering the old plastic guides and tensioners to do the complete timing chain replacement with.
It turns out that is exactly what they were going to do! :(
And from an official Jaguar dealership/service shop in the next biggest city. Edmonton in this case..
Where they are getting the new parts from is absolutely fine with me BUT they were just going ahead and ordering the same old plastic guides and tensioners.
As we know that is the root of timing chain failure on these cars.
And one timing chain broke in December.
The problem I’m having now is that when I say ‘upgrade to the new metal guides and tensioners’ they don’t seem to have ANY IDEA what I’m talking about.
They called Jaguar in Edmonton and I presume they only talked with their parts department and they also didn’t seem to have any idea what upgrade to metal to do this job was all about.
Have no clue even what I’m talking about on this!
Jaguar in Edmonton is recommending my shop just go with the old plastic guides and tensioners.
Even the ‘idea’ that when these cars were quite new Jaguar knew about the problem and was replacing them in some cases themselves....seems to be not known to them.
Can you please help by just sending a quick reply and explanation and I’ll take a screen shot of it and send it to my shop and and they fwd it to Jaguar in Edmonton.
If you have written about this previously I can also just go to that if you will direct me.
I can’t believe I’ve only been a Jaguar owner since November 21 and I know about this issue and solution and The Closest Official Jaguar dealership in my area and also my shop that work only on imported cars do not and seem to have never heard of it.
They are getting back to me with things like: well Greg if those are metal....metal on metal won’t be good right ? So that’s why those are made of plastic.
And I’m going: No but everyone that gets one of these cars wants to upgrade to the ‘metal’ guides and tensioners if it hasn’t already been done.
They need an explanation more than I can give them. For now everything is still at a complete stand still.
These are great video clips...I have a standard xk8 which I think may have a head gasket issue...I wish you would have shown a bit more of cleaning the top of the block because this is really important...Great videos though...keep up the good work...
It is very boring content wise. It probably took 3-4 hours just carefully using the scraper shown. Patience is key!

What might "long tube headers" be?
Performance Exhaust manifolds
Will you be getting new exhaust from mina gallery? I suppose you are not doing all these performance modifications just to keep the silent stock exhaust right?
New exhaust components will be added. You may have seen that we had purchased some long tube headers for the car. However the individual scammed us out of the $ and never sent the parts. 😕
For this reason we are focusing on getting the car running for now and will tackle the exhaust later once we recoup from the loss.

being a shade tree mech I am having doubts as to try and tackle this job but it is so meticulous how do I trust anyone else to do it?

@@LowTechGarage that's messed up I think it was the same guy I was asking about headers luckily I didn't buy
@@LowTechGarage hey since I'm only removing my driver side cylinder I only have to remove just the chain on that side it is it one whole piece that needs to be removed and the thing that u put at the tool u used at the bottom of the car what was it called
