Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon are the holy trinity of the Need for Speed series. Those games are so good it's hard to choose a favourite, but for me Most Wanted wins. And it's incredible how great they (still) are considering Black Box had only one year to develop it.
Black box had more than a year to develop. Preproduction of the game started in late 2003, early 2004. If you own the Black Edition of the game, it comes with a bonus DVD that show cases some of the preproduction phase of the game. Really interesting to watch from time to time.
Amazing game, I had the same experience quitting when younger probably due to the same reason. Came back few years later and loved it. Current NFS’ are super cheesy but my main problem with them is the whole damn drift turning physics.
I think payback and 15 were good but not good enough. Both together wouldve been better. Ps: I think most wanted is the number one. Carbon and Underground right behind it. Pro street had the best controls tho.
Peter Nagy Definitely a great step in the right direction but yeah for me at least the physics really hurt it but either way I did enjoy them and owned pretty much every car and maxed them lol
as a casual speedrunnner of this game you are right about rubberbanding and also about earl, he is the only one who is RIDICULOUSLY fast in the last 20-30% of the race and sometimes trying to block him with your car is literally the only way to win otherwise this game is a masterpiece imo
ColourShed, you’re one of the best UA-cam reviewers on this website. It a shame you don’t even have 100 thousands subscribers yet, but you make some of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time. I hope a lot more people watch your great stuff and can’t wait until the next review
Also fun fact to those who don't know: The BMW's stats are much lower at the intro races than when you get it back from Razor. I guess you could say that, Razor pumped up your ride! XD ...it's infuriating though that after when you make old jump bridge and continue the story in Carbon, you lose your car instantly afterwards and gets destroyed, so you can't get it back... WHAT A TEASE!!!!!
It was .. my internet connection ahs been down teh last few days. .Been playing MW again on the Modern Rockport patch. The thing is they cannot catch up if you don't make a mistake^^
There is a way described here: nfsmods.xyz/mod/43 to permanently disable catch up for all modes, though it requires adding a script mod with a extra .ini file for the PC.
@@bloodwolf9428 Oh normal races are fine, but Blacklist racers have really strong rubber banding when they're behind. They catch up to you like it's nothing. But playing the game on Hard is not hard once you start to understand how cars respond, specially when you get good at taking good corners without losing too much speed.
When I played it back when I was a kid, I stopped at blacklist 3 because of rubber banding. I had a HUGE lead over Ronnie and in the dying moments of the race, he appeared out of fucking nowhere and won without me making any mistakes. Came back about 10 years later, played on PC instead of PS2, renamed the launch icon to "NeedForSpeedNoRubberBanding" and indeed there was no rubber banding. Only then I could drive being satisfied with my own skills. Until then, I was driving Gran Turismo and F1 games so the realism was my thing, only skills mattered, and rubber banding can suck my ass.
Earl is notorious for rubberbanding in this game. I had major issues with Ronnie as well. He crashed a couple of times, I had 1,7 km lead on him and he somehow managed to overtake me with crazy speed diffrence even though I wasn't making any major mistakes. These races were won by luck more often than skill. But rubberbanding works both ways. If you make a major mistake and get overtaken there is still a fairly large chance that you can win, unless it's like the last 10% of the race. In games without such rubberbanding...well, once you were in that situation you might as well restart the race here and now. You are not winning that, period. Even if the race had just begun.
And the worst part?! Earl's car statistically doesn't even make any sense. He can catch up so easily as if he is going 200mph and his car can't even reach that kind of speed. If you compare it to fully buffed Byron's Porsche to his car, it's a whopping joke!
The PC version of the game had even worse rubberbanding, you really do need to have sheer luck in order to win most races. Even though you're doing over 260 mph you're still gonna see a little Golf or an IS200 just fly past you eventually...
The soundtrack in this game is pretty amazing too, I find, and I don't think you've mentioned that. Because of this game, I got into drum and bass and metal; thank you game. And also: thank you ColourShed for reviewing this gem.
Could you imagine if they actually did a REAL remake, with same storyline and characters, just improved graphics, customization, more cars, and updates rubber banding and atmosphere (ie smartphones instead of Cingular flip phone and old things like that.) I would buy it instantly, but I would hope they would keep the old original cars in the game too. An M4 GTS wouldn’t have the same awe inspiring affect as the E46 GTR.
My hang up was I got started on Midnight Club games. Open world, and get to the next checkpoint anyway or on any street you want. When I tried to play Need For Speed, they could pretend you were in a city, for example, but thanks to barriers and barrels and such, you were really on a premade track with a city 'background', or 'skin'. just couldn't get past it, and never felt inspired to play on rails like that.
We take it for granted now but the road detail and lighting in this game were miles ahead of the times. that they were able to do this to a high level even on the PS2 is a technical feat that will sadly be forgotten about.
Just to clarify - Earl's Sprint is the most egregious case of the Catch Up mechanic going nuts in a race and it's the primary reason why people hate Earl so much. It starts around 60% of the race done and for seemingly *no* reason, Earl will just catch up and most likely pass you by even if he's several seconds behind you. You just practically _need_ Earl to crash near the end of the race to win. It's the hardest race in the whole game, it's just dumb.
I remember going on 25 minute chases trying to complete the Razor challenges where you had to do insane shit like trade paint 50 times and by 40 you were balls deep in Heat 6 LOOOL
It's a legit strategy in this game to not be in first till near the end. Rubber-banding works both ways to a certain extent and they slow down a bit, and like you said, they crash constantly. Once I got the corvette, my favorite car at that time, I really didn't feel the urge to play anymore. It's a chore due to the AI, both the racers and the cops, who get frustratingly dense towards the end.. They can literally overwhelm an entire road leaving you nowhere to go. I enjoyed Underground 2 the most because it was a good blend of everything that makes NFS fun. That said I grew up with Hot Pursuit and for some reason I'll always hold that one in super high regard. The tracks were fascinating, the cars were awesome, and the cops made each race intense. Sure it didn't have the open world, but it had so much style. As NFS got more trendy it got more intolerable, and my god the cutscenes in the newer ones are downright unwatchable.
I love your vids man, all these old racing games you review make me play them all over again, I wish these game companies can just go back to these type of games without any microtransactions so far gt sport is the only racing game I know where you get new cars each update for free
I've never in all the years of playing racing games, Most Wanted included, had issues with rubberbanding. The only game that I had difficulty winning in was Midnight Club Los Angeles for some reason. Every other game was a total breeze. I never noticed too much rubberbanding going on with AI in this game, although I noticed that some of the Blacklist rivals are coded so badly that they almost always crash and get stuck. Overall, it's still one of my favourite games and I think the police is really what makes it shine. Everything else was good too, but without police, this world would feel much emptier.
I think that downwards trend only started after Carbon TBH. To me Carbon is a more refined and more aesthetically pleasing NFS, because it brought back drifting, it had the Canyons (which would really get me excided) and they really managed to make the city look beautiful (I really dislike MW's yellowish, beige filter, it's really annoying and looks horrible). While yes, I think they haven't fleshed out the story as much and there wasn't as much content, I still think that it's better gameplay-wise. But MW is still very good if not better in general. I just wouldn't call Carbon a part of the downfall of NFS.
@@IskenderCaglarM41B441 Yeah, that's my point. I was only saying this, because he said the downwards trend started with Carbon. But I believe it only started after Carbon. Carbon might just be my favourite NFS game ever, with the only one coming close to it being Underground 1, but that's only because it was my first game so in genenral I prefer Carbon...
@@liam2212000 Well I can't judge that one, since I never played it. I took a brake from NFS between Carbon and MW 2012 (great timing to return to NFS, huh?), so I literally know next to nothing about those games in between. I was just too busy and too broke around that time... Though I still feel tempted to give NFS ProStreet a try, since it seemed like a very different approach to the series (also it has that sweet autosculpt, that I like).
Best and definitely the most realistic cops I've ever seen in a game. Not once in ANY other video game have I heard dispatch coordinating patrol officers to set up a quadrant...The voice actors sounded like real police officers communicating to eachother.. Except that air unit, it sounded very contrived. I wish you could have been the police though.. You can be the police in other Need For Speeds, But the radio traffic and the realism was significantly reduced in comparison to Most Wanted. Need for speed rivals was complete trash.. You might as well be driving a Little Tikes police car and screening Yaba daba doo all the way to the crime scene. Even though its old now, I still love the police lights on the cruisers in this game.
Last Christmas, I got a NFS Underground 1 game case that had NFS MW 05 in it and had the “NOT FOR RESALE” badge on it. I’m wondering what that means.......
@@BubbleGumGuy-gx1xj it really is. Most Wanted was everywhere when I was a kid. It was such a big racing game, my Dad even had this game on his PC back then. I never took the chance to fully beat this game back then because I don't understand how to drive properly in Most Wanted because I'm more getting used with more of the usual bland arcade racer games. But now I finally got to play this game and beaten it on my beloved PS2, and I can safely say indeed, that this is one of the best EA game of all time I've played. along with original Mirror's Edge
@@Pokaroquai I’ve beaten it so many times, Now I’m doing a stock golf run where I can’t do any upgrades that affect the cars performance, It’s really fun and makes the game feel challenging again since I’ve beaten it a lot. Definitely one of their if not best games they have ever made
Your videos are so interesting. Usually I cant get into long videos but yours are really good. I watched all the way till the end and didnt realize 18 minutes had passed
Not sure if a lot of people knew this, but you can fix the "rubber-banding" in the options. Find the option "catch up" and you can turn it off. Helps when you get sick of blacklisters crashing and then being right behind you again. Also a double-edged sword if you're not careful. This is one of my all-time favorite games and when i found out about the option it made the gameplay that much better. Just in case anyone didn't know!
I’d play a one-to-one HD 60fps update of this game right now. I’d be fine with 1080p, honestly. I beat this game so many times. Underground 2 was pretty dang entertaining, too.
This game's story was the first in a racer to actually involke emotion from me. I remember my reaction when I lost the Beemer to Razor and how angry I was. A shame that the blackbox games are better than the newer titles.
dhsfjkzhuofsdhqfjkflhq It does I remember being thrown off on a few races by the ai when I thought I was winning easily it’s nice and makes me concentrate more so I don’t mess up.
It is artificial difficulty for an excuse of not being able to program competent ai. I recently started playing the game again, with all the graphics mod and extra options.... Well, the game is very easy when you get a hang of the driving mechanics, but the one point that ruins it are the drag races. Man, these are the most pathetic races ever introduced. Luckily they are mostly optional, but still, it almost ruined the experience for me. That and the pathetic motion blurr.
The racing part stinks so hard this game cheats so unbelievably.I remember I had a trainer on pc that would make my car into hyper speed, but what do you know in 5 seconds the competition was on my tail.
This game literally took hundreds of hours of my childhood. I’ve played through the career at least 4-5 times. The E46 M3 with a widebody kit was one of my dream cars for over a decade because of this game.
Something worth mentioning is how they absolutely nailed the sound design. Even the low end cars have incredible sounding engines, turbo blow-off, and backfires. I can't get enough of it.
When you think about how this game took a few steps back from underground 2 in the way of customization and number of cars, it's actually kind of surprising that a lot of people regard this as the best game in the series, but then again what this game lacks in it's content, it does make up for in it's gameplay. Also, what Rog says at the start always made me think this was a sequel to underground 2
it'll be interesting when/if you get to NFS Prostreet, i want to see which way you sway on the game as a whole (or even stay on the fence). I know many wrote it off for not having the street racing culture of Underground or cops in MW but personally I have a soft spot for it and still play it to this day. I've really enjoyed your content very in depth in every game you review, keep it up :)
My only issue with it is that the local multiplayer (i didnt played online in this game) is kinda iffy to get around. You take so many time to create a track day and the other person gets bored, or the lack of visual representations, you only pick tracks and locations by name and it can be confusing to a new player. Even Gran Turismo and Forza which are simulation centric titles like Pro Street tries, are easier to pick and play with others
Most wanted is the first game I ever played on my 2007 computer. My dad bought pirate cd then we installed it, sadly it didn't opened. Then after searching folders and putting a file to system 32 game finally opened. But time was too late and there was school, I couldn't play it too much but later I spend hours. Wow what a game man, I am sure I get the same taste even today.
I had so many late nights playing NFS Underground, Most Wanted, Carbon and Pro Street... Who here is loving the new NFS, Need For Speed Heat??? I've had a damn blast with it!!
I always tried playing most like underground 2 and drive to everywhere with the car that had the highest heat level..... It was fun but I wouldn't recommend it
I believe this one had also got the best sounding cars. Carrera GT sound still makes me want to own that car irl xD. Dang that F1 sounding engine is unbeatable :D.
This was peak Need for Speed for me. A cool story, characters, music, the look of it, the city, an iconic car to represent the game; many things make this nostalgic. The name says it too, it is the most wanted Need for Speed. I played from Underground 1 to Shift 2, PS2, PS3 days. I recently got back into the NFS scene by playing Need for Speed: No Limits on mobile and it's a fun game. The cool thing is the BMW M3 GTR from Most Wanted is in that game too but it is a challenge to earn it.
This need for speed needs a live action movie. But like, similar to Star wars, start with underground then go all the way to carbon. It would be cool to see who the "player" is and have the story elaborated on.
I wouldn't necessarily say that Rog's dialogue referencing the protagonist(s?) of the Underground games is hinting towards them being the same protagonist in Most Wanted and Carbon. I think it's simply Rog talking to the *player* rather than the protagonist, considering the two previous games were in the Underground, and now the player is playing a NFS game set in the daylight.
Quick trivia. In the demo you originally played as rog who was supposed to be the main charicter. But they changed it. I think rog was the charicter you play as in the underground series since he brings up bayview multiple times throughout the game.
The one and only NFS most wanted 2005 the pinnacle of the entire franchise. The most highly acclaimed of any title that came before or after it 19 years on. This was a tough game to beat but so rewarding if you can do it I'll never forget it.
@@valentinassamatovicius4985 i just need to find a good pirate option. Ive skimmed online but couldnt find one. and considering i cant find a legit copy thats not physical for pc i dont care about piracy. Ea shouldve just put it on origin
just a few tips: -regarding the speedtrap races - don't go with his suggestion, once somebody finishes the race the points get deducted with each second untill you'll reach the finish line -don't use the speedbreaker, unless it will let you miss the spikes. It slows you down so much, that it's much better to bounce off the wall to continue racing -police cars are way lighter in the back, than in the front. Keep that in mind especially when it comes to roadblocks edit: couldn't agree more about the last statement in the video.
I still love the game I really wish they didnt ruin the colours Whos dumb idea was it to put a yellow filter on the game? WHY? All it does is make things look worse
Not a problem on the PC version of the game. You can turn the yellow filter off on the PC version. I have the yellow filter turned off, and I have a mod that allows me to create a custom filter. I replaced the yellow filter with a blue filter; similar to NFS Carbon. It's the NFS Most Wanted Extra Options Mod. By far, the best mod available for NFS Most Wanted. Adds so much more functionalility to the game.
@@dustinjames1268 Yeah, NFS Most Wanted has great mod support. Even in 2018, almost 2019, the game still has mods being made for it. There's also a cool mod, that allows you to play online with other people. It's called "Most Wanted Online".
@@PLAYER-MOST-WANTED I've been in modding for NFS Most Wanted for a little over a year and a half now. Also no, mod support is not dead. Just look at sites like NFS cars and there's still mods being posted weekly. Also, if you join any modding discord servers, you'd know that people are always releasing new mods and talking with each other to develop new mods.
You forgot how in the highest pursuit level, the police cars get replaced by Corvettes and even Cross will take part in pursuits occasionally. And how sweet it is to win your BMW back from Razor and then race the whole town with it.
I just KNEW you'd mention Earl's second race. That race was the absolute epitome of everything that was wrong with an otherwise exceptional game. Christ, even thinking about it makes me shiver, since I ran into that same situation in that very race more than once as a kid.
I call it Need for Speed Rubberband edition. It is easy to find trainers for this game, cheat the hell out of it out of boredom, and the enemy cars will still be behind you by a tenth of a second, regardless. Outside of that, you should have 3 cars prepared. One for pure racing up the list, one for heat and one for backup. Yes, keep one car deliberately wanted because you still can lose cops easily. And keep those special upgrades for the final battle against razor. If you contain yourself, you can max out a Corvette or a Mercedes... I think only those two could max out at everything. And due to rubberbanding, you should suck on purpose. Take first but dont rush away.
the only thing i know about Carbon? the Beemer is totaled at the fucking intro sure we get the "SIT DOWN HOW YA BEEN" but the Beemer still fucking breaks down WHY this is also the only thing i HATE about carbon neat
The best thing about this game, is the visual blur you get as you go faster, that experience although makes my adrenaline pumping, it also makes me scare, not even modern games can replicate the feel of speed of this game. And the pursuit system, although very frustrating when you get caught, but it's actually not that hard, listen carefully for certain callout of the cops and you get a advantage over them, just watch out for rhino unit and spikes, those would be the big problem. And making your car stay on higher pursuit level is actually a good thing, cuz that way you'll rank up your bounty at a faster pace.
I had a blast playing this game with friends, later I got used to play it now and then for nostalgia reasons, still, the game has issues but nothing unplayable, great review dude!

Pro street had the best controls tho.

as a casual speedrunnner of this game you are right about rubberbanding and also about earl, he is the only one who is RIDICULOUSLY fast in the last 20-30% of the race and sometimes trying to block him with your car is literally the only way to win
otherwise this game is a masterpiece imo

Also fun fact to those who don't know:
The BMW's stats are much lower at the intro races than when you get it back from Razor.
I guess you could say that, Razor pumped up your ride! XD
...it's infuriating though that after when you make old jump bridge and continue the story in Carbon, you lose your car instantly afterwards and gets destroyed, so you can't get it back...
WHAT A TEASE!!!!!
The catch up system really is the work of Satan in this game. xD

@@TotallyNotASpy1 Dang! O_o
Earl was the worst, on pc and psp too. Hardest time always. I can offer the cayman and golf to beat him.
After failing it too much I just install trainer and beat the race like a boss

I remember having 2 strikes on my favorite car when I was really young and always turning off the PlayStation before they fully caught me
literally same here 😂 that's why i had no strikes on all my cars 😂🤦♀️
We take it for granted now but the road detail and lighting in this game were miles ahead of the times. that they were able to do this to a high level even on the PS2 is a technical feat that will sadly be forgotten about.
Fun fact, if you start getting chased by the cops in a race and you manage to finish the race just restart it and the chase will end automatically
they are usually scripted to enter a race though with someone calling them about a street race
gamer gamer not sure what that has to do with the trick I mentioned
iam saying, makes the trick irrelevant if they still try and stop the race
It's more fun to keep going.
3:19 that engine breakdown was like a drag race where if you over revved during the race the engine would break down
I like how all the Americans have switched to Km/h to inflate their speed numbers.
Need For Speed: Most Wanted's BMW M3 GTR has to be THE MOST iconic video game car ever!!!
ColourShed! Why do you do this?! I was about to go to sleep!
Carbon was good. What to dislike about it?It is basically underground + most wanted which are best nfs games.
Marcelo Guia Id say it started after the hot pursuit reboot. That was great as well.
Marcelo Guia You should try hp 2010. And you can also check the run, that game was fine too.

This game's story was the first in a racer to actually involke emotion from me. I remember my reaction when I lost the Beemer to Razor and how angry I was. A shame that the blackbox games are better than the newer titles.
I personally think that the rubberbanding gives you some difficulty, which is nice for people that think the game is easy
dhsfjkzhuofsdhqfjkflhq It does I remember being thrown off on a few races by the ai when I thought I was winning easily it’s nice and makes me concentrate more so I don’t mess up.
It's a bit unfair when it comes to speed traps because you have to change your playstyle to trailing the AI
It is a nice challenge for the most part but it's not very nice having a bloody stock Lexus speed past you into the zoom of light

Sometimes, less is more.

it'll be interesting when/if you get to NFS Prostreet, i want to see which way you sway on the game as a whole (or even stay on the fence).
I know many wrote it off for not having the street racing culture of Underground or cops in MW but personally I have a soft spot for it and still play it to this day.
I've really enjoyed your content very in depth in every game you review, keep it up :)
Yeah, Pro Street had an amazingly authentic "Track Day" feel to it. I also loved the Drag racing in it.

NFS has gone up and down ever since the first one, this game was a definite highpoint.
What were the downs on the older nfs games?
This was peak Need for Speed for me. A cool story, characters, music, the look of it, the city, an iconic car to represent the game; many things make this nostalgic. The name says it too, it is the most wanted Need for Speed.

Id rather have a new game...

-regarding the speedtrap races - don't go with his suggestion, once somebody finishes the race the points get deducted with each second untill you'll reach the finish line
-don't use the speedbreaker, unless it will let you miss the spikes. It slows you down so much, that it's much better to bounce off the wall to continue racing
-police cars are way lighter in the back, than in the front. Keep that in mind especially when it comes to roadblocks

Most Wanted 2005 is still a hell of a fun time till this day
I call it Need for Speed Rubberband edition.
