The best thing about this scene is how it doesn't shy away from the beauty and euphoria that drugs provide, albeit transiently. While 99% of the experience of being an addict is negative, that short period of high is what makes people feel like chasing it. The scene perfectly encapsulates the highs and lows of addiction.
Exactly what I was thinking. I think in order to show the full story on drug addiction you need to show how good it can be, so the viewer may understand why someone would ruin their life for it.
@@Laou41 Oddly I see the scene with the dog as something symbolizing the pure love needed to overcome addiction. I mean Christopher is not much of a dog lover to put it mildly yet here he is hugging and kissing a stray mutt.
The song brought me here. If anyone is wondering what the song is, it's Dolphins by Fred Neil. It was on his self titled album from 1966. The same guy wrote Everybody's Talkin'.
The brief moments of Christopher's happiness and bliss (getting married, kid on the way, good terms with Tony) before spiralling down the slope was pretty much straight out of Shakespeare. So often Shakespeare would give the tragic hero a moment of hope at the end before taking it away with his dreadful fate.
In this episode he was so sad about losing Adriana. Yes, he had a wife, kid on the way, buying the house and car, and good terms with Tony but missing Ade was overwhelming, and the grief took over. He was so lonely and went down that spiral. Everyone commends his acting as an addict which is great, but what I see in these scenes is a wounded person missing the love of his life, you can see it in his eyes. I even think he was remembering her dog, that's why he befriended this one, but that's just a theory. Great emotional actor without uttering a word.
The Sopranos does that a lot with many characters just before they die or are killed in a brutal/violent way. Even though they might have acted with brutality and violence to others in their lives, the show usually portrays them in a sympathetic manner in their final scene/scenes to enhance the emotional impact of their death: Ralphie, Christopher (though in a much longer term sense, as described here), Eugene, Vito etc.

So true! I had a buddy just like Chris, he’d go a year clean & sober , Out of nowhere he’d face plant off the wagon on his way to a weeks long bender. This was a pattern for years! Right when you think he’s got it - He would completely self destruct.

The ferris wheel (the never ending cycle) the metal Fence (the prison bars) the Teacups (the spinning round & round) sopranos once again putting absolute stunning details in every scene
I think the part where he’s laying down at the fair and everyone is moving around talking, socializing, enjoying the rides and Chris is nodding out off to the side by himself away from everyone captures the isolation of addiction
Sometimes the most beautiful things are almost the saddest and most poignant. Here, Chrissy gets to numb his troubles for a little while. You can see the tension leave his body and he sees the bright colours of the fair as his pain melts away. He has a moment of that unconditional love that only happens with dogs and he puts his face in the dog's fur and cuddles him. How he misses Adriana. This scene always makes me cry.
Is that why people do drugs? Stupid escapism? The only REAL struggle Chrissy had was the constant fear of incarceration. Otherwise his life was freaking sweet. I say sweet, but you need to consider that all lives are shitty. The happiest person alive is having a bad day, everyday. That's what most people fail to understand. Nobody's having a good time.
@hellriser8955 was it? my favorite scene in the show or at least one of them. that description you made basically describes the entire series as a whole, it kind of hits on every emotion for me.
It makes me crave for it ... But it is better to not be high and waste your life away though. If you are sober, stay it... Nothing good comes from getting high. In the midst of my opiate pill usage I would cry even when lit up... I was wasting my life, hurting my family, and it was doing nothing good for me (maybe besides give me some actual pain relief) It really is the best journey to remain sober and experience what life has to offer that way... It really is a lonely life to be in the life of a pill-head/junkie... You feel totally cut off from having connection with others and not in a good way... It leaves you feeling empty...
I struggled with heroin for many years in my wreckless youth (including when this episode aired and when I watched it) and never once has a film or TV series captured the absolute bliss of heroin (especially after being clean awhile). Petting a dog and staggering around a carnival seems like nothing but it would be heaven. The song Dolphins by Fred Neil really was yet another perfect use of music for Sopranos. Breaking Bad season 2 has a similar scene with Jesse and Jane, and the film Trainspotting does too, but this with Chrissy was perfect. Even the way he snorts it at first (while still babbling about how his friend should get himself some help) then it transitions into him using the same needle as his junkie friend. So horrible yet so beautiful this scene.

I don't know what the inspiration for Fred Neil was when he created this song, but whoever chose it for tying it to a heroin fix was a genius. The song itself feels a lot like being on opiates. Like a peaceful, warm, happy, no troubles, no problems, everything is ok kind of feeling.
It might have some deeper meaning, but apparently Fred Neil just really liked dolphins. He spent his last 30 years helping with their conservation. Beautiful song, RIP legend.

What an accurate portrayal of heroin. The isolation, nodding in public places, feeling so good you don't care that some grimy mutt is rubbing shit on your nice clothes... Heroin is the devil but the beginning part is always great.
Oh yea the first couple of months with heroin were unreal I can’t really put it into words but god is it so intoxicating to even think about it especially my first time.. first Norcross, first morphine pill, first oxy….my first time doing heroin I watched the episode in season 4 I believe it’s called we all hurt. Contender for best scene in the show and there’s hardly even any dialogue! The way addiction is portrayed here hits so close to home and it’s beautiful in a very tragic way. The road to sobriety is unrelenting in it’s tribulations..
As an ex heroin addict this show is literally the only show that correctly portrays heroin, although breaking bad when Jesse takes his first shot is pretty on point too
the only thing they always mess up is the size of the needle, this one here has gotta be for animals or smth haha. Imagine the track marks you'd get banging up daily with that, it's bad enough with the 23 gauge needles
Chris from sopranos and Jesse from BB are the best depictions of addiction I’ve ever seen. There was also a movie with Ryan Gosling where he plays a teacher / coach who’s addicted to drugs. Best portrayals out there for sure
I always felt like Chris was really the most relatable our off all the characters. Just something about the struggles he has and the way he handles them that seem so much like what a regular person would do or similar in his shoes. Awesome realistic scene and acting
This is scene is so sad, his grief of missing Adriana cuts deep. He truly did love her but he thought he'd love the life more. Turns out that life was nothing without Adriana by his side. She stuck by him through everything And was foolish enough to believe he would leave that life for them to have a fresh start. Neither of them handled it the right way and it was their demise. The fbi did a number on that couple.
perfect portrayal of a good opiate high. it only feels this good in the beginning tho, after a while the euphoria tapers off until you can't feel sht, high or sober, except for the cravings
Exactly. Chrissy got this type of high from it because he had been clean for awhile before it. An addict doesn't get high they just feel "normal" when they use.
I am fascinated by the courage of portraying the beauty and euphoria of using drugs in this scene. Yes, drugs are harmful and can lead to deaths and so on, but for a moment, they lived life to the fullest. For a brief moment, they experienced the beauty of life and nothing else. They were alive or at least felt alive, their souls were immense and light. It's heartbreaking that they would exchange a lifetime for a moment of peace. And this scene is a tribute to the short-lived, expensive relief. That being said, don't do drugs kids
Been addicted to opioids for about 7 years now. It’s gotten worse. I’m not at rock bottom yet but I’m getting closer to it every day. Losing one thing at a time. It won’t be long before I have nothing left. I want to stop so bad. But it’s so hard. I wouldn’t wish this addiction on my worst enemy
I always tell people who have never done opiates that the closest thing I can explain the happiness you feel is like you are 7 years old early on Christmas 🎄 morning.
“I love you very much. My only dream is that we have a happy life together. For the last few months, things have gotten very bad because you're using drugs all the time, you’re high all the time and I can't take it.” - Adriana
this scene fucked me up when i first seen it, was so tragic, you can finally see chris dealing with the loss of Adriana, this was also David Chase favorite episode as he stated on the talking sopranos podcast, i would imagine this scene has a lot to do with that.
I was struggling with heroin pretty bad from seasons 4 thru 6, and this scene is the most accurate of any scene in film or TV history. The enabling, the self sabotage, the relapse, the euphoria of heroin...perfectly displayed here.
@@caeserornothing I hope you're doing fine. I've never used drugs myself, but I've volunteered a little for charity for drug addicts, many of them heroine users. It must be extremely triggering to try to recover and then this comes on the TV. Great acting by Michael Imperioli.

This scene can still make me want to cry. Damn.
this scene has stuck with me more than anything else. so well done in all regards it hurts
I've heard this song for the first time during this epic Sopranos scene.. It felt so appropriate and so real that I almost saw myself in Christopher's place doing heroin... One of the best scenes from the TV history.. Period... And I've listen to the song many times after... A true masterpiece..
Indeed
Agreed the song was perfect
Had to shazam it instantly
What is this song name?
@@halong6583 Fred Neil - Dolphins
I don't know what the inspiration for Fred Neil was when he created this song, but whoever chose it for tying it to a heroin fix was a genius. The song itself feels a lot like being on opiates. Like a peaceful, warm, happy, no troubles, no problems, everything is ok kind of feeling.
It might have some deeper meaning, but apparently Fred Neil just really liked dolphins. He spent his last 30 years helping with their conservation. Beautiful song, RIP legend.
I like the loose tremolo effect on the guitar, it sounds like Chris' life stuttering and breaking apart
Chris was never the same after Adriana
Beautiful just beautiful. I remember immediately after watching this scene I went to look for the song
I thought you were gonna say that immediately after watching this scene you went to look for some heroin heheh
1:59 My favorite part.
Me Too Brother!
What a shot.
'She could be in China by now!'
The plane landing at EWR Newark airport. They thought of everything. Show was SO much east coast it’s insane. I lived my life in that area it’s so accurate it’s scary.
As a Sopranos fanatic (11 total viewings) a drug addict, and a loser in love. This hits hard.
I am too and it did hit hard. At least when he was in LA, he only relapsed with coke and booze but here he relapsed to heroin which was his ultimate monkey.
A weirdly beautiful but depressing scene
This scene is absurdly perfect...
as a person struggling with depression and addiction, this is one of the scenes wich impacted me the most in my life, sometimes I come back here to see it again
Fred Neil - The Dolphins
Darude - Sandstorm
Fredude - The Dolphins Storm

Way late to the party here but considering the multiple replies I've just got to say Fred Neil IS the correct answer.
He was my father so I'm positive about this. 😂😂😎🍻
Saw this episode high, it was something crazy
This is the saddest scene in the entire show in my opinion
What an accurate portrayal of heroin. The isolation, nodding in public places, feeling so good you don't care that some grimy mutt is rubbing shit on your nice clothes... Heroin is the devil but the beginning part is always great.
Christopher was the grimy mutt, not the dog.
What do you mean grimy mutt jerk?
Oh yea the first couple of months with heroin were unreal I can’t really put it into words but god is it so intoxicating to even think about it especially my first time.. first Norcross, first morphine pill, first oxy….my first time doing heroin I watched the episode in season 4 I believe it’s called we all hurt. If only I could live my life in a moment of time…hope you’re still clean stranger.I sort of am but im hooked on suboxone. New chain different shackles.
@@tylerpool5464 I take suboxone daily as well haha. For years now. I've calmed down suboxone definitely levels me out because when I just go cold turkey and am completely sober even after many months I end up starting up something, alcohol, meth, heroin. Suboxone lets me stay off everything except suboxone, so that's the best solution I've found so far. I wish I could stop suboxone as well but I don't know if that would work, I haven't tried it yet.
Good luck to you man and try to stay on suboxone, it has worked for me at least. I wish you the best take care.
@@doyltruddy902 I’ve been dealing with counterfeit pills for almost a year now and I’ve been prescribed suboxone and racked up a lot than I could dream of. Yet I still find myself relapsing everyday on pills. Any tips?

You can actually see the beast be awakened, he gives the look like, fuck I am right back to where I started, haunting scene!
once again, this is just such an amazing scene - the writers of this show / actors are just incredible
This episode was pure art
Michael is a fucking good actor
when the lights go off i feel so empty… amazing scene
Contender for best scene in the show and there’s hardly even any dialogue! The way addiction is portrayed here hits so close to home and it’s beautiful in a very tragic way. The road to sobriety is unrelenting in it’s tribulations..
favorite scene in the sopranos
Art. Absolute art.
The music used to score this show was awesome. The show was so well written that you almost forgot these people were the scum of earth
Such an EPIC scene. Thankful for Fred Neil singing this beautiful song.
Melancholy. Poor Christopher. He never got over Adrianna.
One of the best scenes in the series for me. Epic.
As an ex heroin addict this show is literally the only show that correctly portrays heroin, although breaking bad when Jesse takes his first shot is pretty on point too
Stay clean baby!
Trainspotting
haha i just came here to say Trainspotting. 2 beat me to it .
the only thing they always mess up is the size of the needle, this one here has gotta be for animals or smth haha. Imagine the track marks you'd get banging up daily with that, it's bad enough with the 23 gauge needles
the wire?
This scene is a cinematic masterpiece.
Best soundtrack of any tv show ever too
Chris from sopranos and Jesse from BB are the best depictions of addiction I’ve ever seen. There was also a movie with Ryan Gosling where he plays a teacher / coach who’s addicted to drugs. Best portrayals out there for sure
Prison Brake had Mahone
That actor also had a good depiction on addiction
2:56 Lights out. Trapped in the loop. There was no saving Christopher after this.
I think this is the best scene i have seen in any media ever
Amazing scene anyone who has struggled will understand
100%.. it's like I'm there. Cotton wool baby. Cotton wool. My mouth waters just thinking about it.. but it just isn't worth it
Not worth doing until you’re old and wrinkly
Pure art, check out the little sync between the bass and Christopher tapping the cigarette at 1:33, beautiful...
Beautiful. Never noticed that.
It’s such an incredible scene !
wow
The closing of the lights at the end syncs up too. Even the dog's whimper harmonizes.
It’s at 1:31 bruh
Best fucking show ever no question just beautiful
I always felt like Chris was really the most relatable our off all the characters. Just something about the struggles he has and the way he handles them that seem so much like what a regular person would do or similar in his shoes. Awesome realistic scene and acting
I remember feeling horrible when I first saw this.. Felt such pity for Christopher. Amazing show!
What can I say. Iconic show
The hypnotism in this scene reminds of Taxi Driver
This is my relapse song.
Adriana should’ve just told Christopher legit the moment they picked her up but you know… women…
@muhammadeyssa23648 idk about the women part 😐... but yes I agree. She should have been straight forward that very day.
Love this scene, love the show, watch it over and over.
I feel this scene is Chris’s reflection on Adriana, he’s clearly broken that she’s gone.
Once in a while i pop in and check this video out.., reminds me of me in my car listening to old R&B tracks ..
0:11 “ that nose it’s like a natural canopy” lol 😂
Only guy i knew who could smoke a cigarette in the rain with both hands tied behind his back
@@RadeyRads ahahhahah u cant make that shit.
@@ВладиславКотельников-я1и Whaddaya talking about? He just did
The Sopranos had a way of using songs that hit the spot for the scene
this scene is so realistic with its portrayal of drugs that it almost made me relapse lol
thank god the dog didn't crawl under him for warmth
perfect portrayal of a good opiate high. it only feels this good in the beginning tho, after a while the euphoria tapers off until you can't feel sht, high or sober, except for the cravings
Exactly. Chrissy got this type of high from it because he had been clean for awhile before it. An addict doesn't get high they just feel "normal" when they use.
I once knew a guy who had ecstasy in 1999 and it had opiates in it. Completely crap trip, just felt more numb than high.
Well said
Been addicted to opioids for about 7 years now. It’s gotten worse. I’m not at rock bottom yet but I’m getting closer to it every day. Losing one thing at a time. It won’t be long before I have nothing left. I want to stop so bad. But it’s so hard. I wouldn’t wish this addiction on my worst enemy
If you want to make a change, you can do it today. All you have is today because you will never be able to get clean tomorrow.
Get help brother. It's hard to quit alone
Well, worlds coming down indeed
Sometimes the only way to get better is to hit rock bottom. I feel your pain though. Good luck.
So how you doing now? Or are you still addicted to it for 10 years straight?
Very sad i feel his pain coming off 7 years clean
good work and stay focused! :)
Me too felt it right in the gut,he got his research right spot on .. i got 12 years JFT
Amazing
Perfect song to the perfect scene!
The dog is lost and belongs to no one, he is lost in the same way. Forever stray from here out, even when taken in, the same lost soul
there's no other scene in the world that describes what it's like being high like this one.
0:12 - he got the scene and look here PERFECTLY...anyone who's ever hit it knows there is that exact moment where it hits you and you're sky high...
I always tell people who have never done opiates that the closest thing I can explain the happiness you feel is like you are 7 years old early on Christmas 🎄 morning.
@@slackerman4161 until the user become physically dependent and the withdrawal start 🤐
@@ofirvvv4566 then you get to look forward to the immensely temporary relief of a dose !🙃
What a Masterpiece this scene with this song. Prelude to a sad end :(
This is probably my favorite scene in the entire series. It's just so real. The romance of a relapse.
“I love you very much. My only dream is that we have a happy life together. For the last few months, things have gotten very bad because you're using drugs all the time, you’re high all the time and I can't take it.”
- Adriana
this scene fucked me up when i first seen it, was so tragic, you can finally see chris dealing with the loss of Adriana, this was also David Chase favorite episode as he stated on the talking sopranos podcast, i would imagine this scene has a lot to do with that.
It’s perfection. the lights at the end…
Just realized the carnival is the drug experience, euphoric for bit, but then it all shuts down
I was struggling with heroin pretty bad from seasons 4 thru 6, and this scene is the most accurate of any scene in film or TV history. The enabling, the self sabotage, the relapse, the euphoria of heroin...perfectly displayed here.
I can only imagine how watching this scene must have felt like for anyone who's been there themselves.
It's.....accurate
@@caeserornothing I hope you're doing fine. I've never used drugs myself, but I've volunteered a little for charity for drug addicts, many of them heroine users. It must be extremely triggering to try to recover and then this comes on the TV. Great acting by Michael Imperioli.
I feel like every addict recognise themselves in Chris and this scene especially, i know i sure do
The way his eyeballs dialed after the first snort…
