    So the Radeon RX 7600 isn't a bad GPU. Whether or not it's worth it's asking price is a point for debate, but when it comes to playing games in VR it's definitely worth considering depending on your budget. If your gaming with a Quest 2 headset however, there is some stuff you're going to want to know about Meta's PC software (aka the Oculus App, Quest Link & AirLink). While AMD updated their drivers in July 2023 finally fixing VR performance with their Radeon 7000 series GPU's; at the time I'm making this video, Meta has yet to get the Oculus PC app working properly with them. In this video I go over some of the problems I encountered while testing the RX 7600 with my Quest 2 as well as test it in 12 different VR games, namely Pavlov, The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, Beat Saber, Breachers, Contractors, Red Matter 2, Blade & Sorcery, Half Life Alyx, Lone Echo 2, Into the Radius, Assetto Corsa Competizione and Microsoft Flight Simulator. If you use a different headset like the HTC Vive, Valve Index or HP Reverb G2 that doesn't rely on an encoded video stream then the problems I experienced shouldn't effect you, but for those using a Quest 2 like me, at least we have Virtual Desktop to fall back on. Thank you Guy Godin!

    It's a shame Oculus doesn't prioritise AMD and AMD doesn't prioritise VR, because AMD has the best bang for buck offerings at the moment. Sadly I'll probably have to opt for the RtX 4070 when I get my Quest 3, although admittedly here in Ozthe RX 7800 XT is currently the same price (with the cheapest models available, AMD is $10 AUD cheaper). AMD prices usually drop relatively quickly after launch though.

    The frame buffer is a portion of the VRAM that stores raw pixel data. My guess is you're only seeing around 50% (I guess it's the usage of the buffer not how full it is) because the GPU doesn't request this ton of data very often because of low frame rate. The memory is practically maxed at 7900mb which does mean a VRAM bottleneck.
    It's a guess, but a good one I think

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  9 місяців тому +2

      That's the way I've been leaning as I've been looking into this more and trying to better understand what the frame buffer is exactly. Still got more to learn, but thanks for checking our the video and for your input. 😀👍🏼

      @@Maraksot78 you should also check RAM usage and CPU usage between same architecture chards with different VRAM arrangements. You would expect higher ram and CPU usage once the GPU needs to offload data somewhere else.

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  9 місяців тому +4

      @blenderalien ha ha, looks like we're on the same page. I was just thinking I need to throw the 7900XTX back on and monitor how much VRAM is utilized in those games. I didn't think about also monitoring the RAM usage though. I haven't thought about data being offloaded to RAM since the 4GB of VRAM wasn't enough days. Been a few years. 😅 I remember testing the RX 560 years ago and running into frame rate problems with only 8GB of system RAM. The system had to offload to the page file and that hit the frame rate pretty hard. With 32GB of system RAM I know we're not going that far, but we could definitely be maxing out the VRAM and offloading to system RAM. Think I'm going to be doing a little investigating and comparing today. 😎👍🏼

    I love these videos addressing hardware and software limitations and issues for this device. This is because it's a rare topic that only a small handful of creators are talking about.
    The quest line of headset is still one the most accessible VR devices out there, and many people either have them or want one. They may have gotten it with standalone in mind, but that never satisfies us. We look for more immersive games, and PCVR is that next level.
    Either you already have a VR ready tower or you spent a lot of money upgrading parts that your tower is compatible with, to only try to play games with your Quest 2, to only have it run like hot garbage on a Saturday afternoon.
    The Quest 2 is like a small PC (or at least a very advanced smartphone), and getting ti to play nicely with PC systems is not always straightforward, and there can and will be issues. So, thank you for highlighting these issues in your tests. You're doing AMAZING work!

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  9 місяців тому

      As always, thanks for checking out the video Sigma. I've had some people tell me to test with a "real" VR headset like a Valve Index instead of the Quest 2, but like you pointed out, the Quest 2 is the most accessible headset on the market. Even on Steams own Hardware Survey the Quest 2 makes up 42% of VR headsets used on Steam. The next closest is the Index at 19% so there are A LOT more people using Quest 2's for PCVR than any other individual headset, so talking about the challenges involved with a particular GPU when using the Quest 2 I think is very relevant. I just wish when using a Link Cable it was a display port feed rather than an encoded video stream so that way you can use it like any other wired headset and avoid the encoding issues.

    Hey Maraksot, great video! Really appreciate the effort you put into pcvr benchmarking. I was wondering if you could also do at least a little bit of benchmarking in demanding VR modded games. I am building a high end pc right now just to be able to play Luke Ross VR modded games like cyberpunk, hogwarts, rdr2, far cry 6, etc. at great graphics :) I understand if it's a bit too niche for your channel, but I actually think such benchmarks would pull more views than you'd think. There barely is any benchmarking on this out there. Next to nothing on AMD cards as far as I'm aware.
    I'm still doubting between getting the 4070ti, 7900xt, 7900xtx and 4080. Priced at 850, 740, 900 and 1200 respectively. For flatscreen and budget reasons I'd obviously go for one of the AMD cards, but VR makes me consider the 4070ti a bit. Recent AMD software developments sound promising for the AMD side of things though. I use a Pico 4 and virtual desktop, but I think your quest 2 tests are pretty representative for it :)

      At the moment I only own a Quest 2, so I don't know what performance with other VR headsets is like. I would imagine performance would be pretty good though when simply using a display port connection. From what I can tell doing my tests, the majority of the problems I'm having are due to Meta's software and the encoded video stream it's sending to the Quest 2. In some games Link and AirLink work fine but in others it's a hot mess, but when I switch to Virtual Desktop more often than not things work great which is a pretty good indicator to me it's Meta's software that's the issue.

I just switched to Quest 3 and wow does it look good, but yah, I started with the Quest 2 simply because it was far less expensive than the Index and I didn't need to put up any base stations in my room. The ease of use was a big plus IMO and with it being far cheaper it was an easy decisions to make. But that's just why I decided to go with Quest when I first got into VR; when it comes to testing GPU's in VR I did think about buying an Index, but when I decided to start doing these tests and videos I checked the Steam Hardware survey to see what all headsets people were using because I was also contemplating buying an HP Reverb G2, but when I saw Quest 2 made up close to half of the VR headsets being used on Steam at that time, it made it really easy to make the decision to just stick with the Quest 2 seeing as that's the headset the majority of people are using.
      Just to satisfy my curiosity, I looked at Januarys Steam Hardware survey and Quest 2 is at 40.64%, Quest 3 is at 14.05% and the Rift S is at 8.31%, so over 60% of the VR headsets on Steam are Oculus/Meta devices. That's kinda crazy. The Index is currently at 15%.

I'm sure you know this but just explaining it for others.

      I think it's going to depend on Meta coding their software to work correctly with Radeon 7000. Unless they do that I think it'll be the same story with Quest 3.
      The RTX 3070 is a good GPU. I have a 3080ti and I get great performance with it using both Quest Link and Air Link. All the Nvidia GPU's I've tested have worked well, so it appears Meta has given preferential treatment to Nvidia GPU's and made sure Link works well with them.

      Wow! Crazy. I threw the 7900XTX back in today and started going back through several different games and monitoring the VRAM and frame buffer usage and I haven't tested Into the Radius yet but the other games that hit 7.8 and 7.9GB of VRAM usage on the 7600 have all exceeded the 8GB mark with the 7900XTX since it has 24GB of VRAM. The highest VRAM usage I've seen so far is in Assetto Corsa Competizione at 12.8GB. I used the exact same refresh rate, resolution and in game settings as I did with the 7600 too trying to see how much VRAM games would eat up. Games that had lower than 7GB VRAM usage on the 7600 have used a similar amount of VRAM on the 7900XTX, so depending on the game it's looking like the 8GB of VRAM is a limiting factor after all. With you saying Into the Radius will use up to 20GB now I'm super curious to see what it's going to do.

At the moment I'm trying to find out how much 8GB of VRAM is effecting VR gameplay, if at all? That's why I bought the 4060ti 16GB. I already have a 8GB model so I'm going to run them both at all the exact same settings in the exact same games and see how much of a difference, if any, 16GB of VRAM makes compared to 8GB on the same GPU.

    @xymaryai8283 4 місяці тому

    i assume texture and geometry memory doesn't contribute to frame buffer memory, in fact i'd expect the frame buffer to always be fairly low unless there's a whole ton of post processing effects that store a lot of data specifically in the frame buffer, but i'm no expert. what i do know, is that games often have dynamic VRAM usage, and 7.9GB means you are VRAM limited, but you might not notice any performance issues, but texture and geometry streaming might be slow, moving quickly into uncached areas will reveal very low resolution textures or appropriate LOD models not loading quickly, because it's reaching back to the stored assets instead of memory.
    you'd only really notice it if you're underbudget by a significant amount, 3/4 or half of the ideal VRAM, depending on how much the game loads when unconstrained, in extreme examples it might look and run totally fine even if you only have 1/4 of what the game expects.
    i'm still not sure if 8GB is enough for me though, showing that these games are using up all of it might convince me to go for the 7600XT.

      Yes! I've encountered that squeezing effect on the right side as well with AirLink. There is a way to eliminate it for awhile by deleting data.sqlite, data.sqlite-shm and data.sqlite-wal in C://users/"your user name"/AppData/Roaming/Oculus/sessions/101109065530671-199614412/ you do have to end OVR Redir, OVR Service Launcher and OVRServer_X64.exe in Task Manager first to be able to delete those data.sqlite files but after killing those processes and deleting those files when you start up the Oculus app and Launch AirLink that right side squeezing should be gone for awhile. It seems to come back after restarting the Oculus app 2 or 3 times. When using a Link Cable if I force h.265 with Radeon 7000 things go all wonky so I have to leave it on h.264 but as long as the encode resolution and bitrate is high enough things look just as good with h.264 as with h.265. But yes, Virtual Desktop just works. You don't have to mess around with all this other stuff. Not sure why one guy, Guy Godin, is able to get things to work well and Meta with their billions of dollars can't. XD

      I'm testing a PowerColor RX 7800XT Red Devil right now, have tested 6 of the 12 games I usually test and so far it's been stellar. I don't want to jinx anything by saying it, but I haven't had any problems at all with Oculus Link and game performance has been excellent. So far everything I've tested I've been able to play at 120Hz at 4704 X 2384 on High or Ultra Settings. It's blowing the 4060ti out of the water and giving the 4070ti a run for it's money. It doesn't quite perform up to the level of a 4070ti, but it also costs $300 less than a 4070ti so I'd say that's a win for the 7800XT. The only problem I've had is even when I set the render resolution in the Oculus app to 4704 x 2384 is the encode resolution defaults to 2016 x 1120 which looks kind of blurry. However I tried setting the encode width in the Oculus Debug Tool to both 3680 and 4096 and that sharpens things right up where they look really good. So yah, so far things are looking really good for the 7800XT. Hope to have a video out on it soon.

    For the 7600 card's capabilities, perhaps 8gb is enough as one shouldn't t expect to be playing graphically demanding AAA vr games with high frame rates and ultra high settings with that cards specs. But more than 8gb is needed when turning up the settings and framerates. I started playing HL Alyx with settings maxed out on a 10gb rtx 3080 at high settings and was getting constant stuttering and dropped frames and also the the Vram was nearly maxed out. Once I upgraded to a 24gb rtx 3090 those framerate drops and stuttering were no longer there. Not because the rtx 3090 is much more powerful than a rtx 3080 (i think the difference is somethink like 15%) but because on the huge increase in VRAM.
