What are your favorite minimalist tips you use?
Minimize needs, don't buy what you don't need, sell what you don't need or give to charity, and don't browse Amazon and other online stores 😅
Your kids won't want your "stuff" when you pass. Get rid of your souvenirs and don't put it on the kids to deal with.
Donate all excess items to charity every 2 months.
If it takes less than 30 seconds to put it away, do it, do it now.
If you haven’t used it in 6 months, get rid of it
My mantra is, "Don't put it down; put it away!" It is my top tip for keeping my small condo tidy.
I recently had a disaster, and I lost almost everything I own. I realized all the sentimental things I was hanging on to were not as important as my actual memories. It was hard to lose so much so fast but I learned stuff is exactly that... stuff.
Sorry for your loss. Or not. Sometimes I look at all my stuff and wish I could have a flood or a house fire and not have to sort it all. And just walk away and start again, with only the things I really love. Then again some of my teaching materials are not replaceable and my clothes I have made, the fabric is not around anymore. So, losing them would hurt.
@@jehannehardwick6311 I've been in a similar place, which has actively been reminding me that I'm still not done purging my things. As a sentimental person, it has been a journey...but I also know I don't miss any of the items I've parted with. I need to just suck it up and take action!
Indeed😮
If there isn't a surface you can't put stuff on it
Very true
Can’t remember the term, but essentially any flat surface WILL get used unless there is a planned use for it.
We never consider how the “plates shelf” doesn’t get cups, and vice versa… but the counter or kitchen table get cluttered all the time
My kitchen counter is the only flat surface. It has plates or cups or bowls on it since they don’t fit in the cupboard single one for all plates bowls cup containers. They get used washed nd back on the bench.
My wife has this issue. 😂
Where there is no flat surface, my husband drops the stuff on the floor 😂
Some of these symptoms of "too much stuff" can also be applied to having ADHD. make sure to do what is healthy for you.
Everyone’s clutter threshold is different, and ADHD can be a factor in a person’s clutter threshold. Decluttering can certainly help manage the issues he mentions in this video regardless of the root cause.
as someone that got diagnosed with ADHD last year.. that makes sense. and I’m also convinced my mom has ADHD and she has literally the hardest time getting rid of shit. I live in a 2br apartment with her and my room is the cleanest room in the house.. bc I don’t want to live in a fkn sty
The minimalist habit I'm trying to cultivate is getting rid of Just In Case items. I have stuff I've had forever, spare things i never use and probably never will, so I'm gradually trying to let them go (either to charity or to the bin, depending on the item).
I had this issue. On the initial declutter I kept it, but I took note of it and if I didn’t use it by the same time the following year, it went. I have yet to regret anything that I’ve given away, sold, etc.
I used to have a bag in my closet that I tossed things in that I didn't know what they were or stuff that I didn't know what to do with. You know stuff that you have to ask yourself, "What does this random key go to?" "What is this wire for?" "What if I need this one day?" If six months has gone by and I haven't used any of those things, I would throw the bag away without looking at what was in there.
I’ve declutterred…. It’s time to go back through.
Decluttering isn’t a once and done. It’s a continuing thing.
Very true
I agree 💯
I have been in the process for a few years now. Now decluttering is second nature. During weekly cleaning, this week a draw, next week a medicine cabinet etc. If you do it all the time, it is never an issue again.
Just went through my closet this morning and got rid of over 35 items I don’t need/like/fit in/wear any more. Yay!!
My trick, through the transition to getting used to clear surfaces, was to put a post-it note on said clear surface with the message "this space is clear on purpose". Obviously I had a post-it note on the surface, but it served as a great reminder to put stuff away instead of putting it down on the surface.
I'm stealing this! We keep yo-yoing between clean and cluttered surfaces
Yeah that's an excellent idea!
Great idea I may have to try that out !
Love this
Brilliant!
Great video. I've been dealing with hoarding for close to 30 years now. Finally, I started my journey to declutter, but it's very, very slow.
Just move forward. You didn't get all the stuff in one week, you don't have to get rid of it in a week. I am rooting for you!
I like looking at my stuff as "inventory." How much inventory can I manage well? Also, declutter, THEN organize. Organizing clutter is still clutter.
For sure! It's a common trap
My aspergus husband was forever losing his wallet (because he never put it in the same place twice). I installed a small shelf with key hooks inside the door, and he hasn't lost it since. He needed me to give it a home, and once I had, he thrived.
That really helps so much!
This works with anything in your house. Give all your belongings a permanent home in your house in the first place you would look for them. Great thing you did for your husband!
One of the worst things that happened led to the best. We had to downsize from a 3 bedroom house with a 400Sq ft studio out back to a 2 bedroom apartment. It took ages to do it, but we have decluttered down to what comfortably and realistically fits in this smallish place and the freedom that came with it is not stressing constantly any longer over clutter, and it is so much easier to keep tidy. I also have the peace of mind knowing if I ever need to move again that it will not be a chaotic disaster that every single move in my adult life has been. I can pack my whole place in probably a weekend and not have to rush.
"You can have options or you can have freedom" ❤
My decluttering quote I live by is by Dana K White (not a minimalist, and neither am I)
“You can keep anything but you can’t keep everything.” As it pertains to the set limits of space for everything in your home. If you have one shelf for cookbooks, you can keep any cookbooks you want until that shelf is full - keep your favorites and let the rest go.
We’ve been throwing/giving away so much things over the last few weeks; it’s been such a relief getting rid of random stuff. Already feeling more calm when we enter decluttered rooms and spaces.
Decluttering feels so good! I love it
I hear you!! With all the items of Christmas out, here are pieces that I don't want anymore, but my sister in FL does. I'm in CT. Anyway she said she would take them when she came to visit in March. I couldn't wait and shipped to her last week!
This weekend decluttered my outdoor storage shed. I did this, so I can finally Declutter my garage next week and move stuff to the storage shed lol. Anyhow, it was really nice to see my storage shed look like something out of the home and garden magazine. It only took about two hours of work. I can’t believe I waited this long to get it done.
I like seeing a guy’s perspective. You are setting a good example for your kids, doing the nightly set up for the next day.
My problem is I get no bigger thrill than "making something from nothing" -- so I see the possibility in EVERYTHING. "I can do something with that..." Couple that with ADHD and Autism and...I have too much stuff. I AM a minimalist at heart, but a maximalist, with disposable income and a dopamine-driven shopping addiction, in practice. And I DO like to be prepared for anything. What really resonated with me was your comment about too many options make you have to choose between them, because I have felt that paralysis. I thought my options gave me freedom, but they have the opposite effect. Been watching your videos for a couple days and subscribed today. Also donated 7 bags of "stuff" in the last week, so maybe you are having the intended effect.
Yes! Decision fatigue is a real thing and an exhausting source of stress. Removing options is actually a good thing.
Are we related? 😂
My minimalist tip is buy some Items that serve more than one purpose.
For example:
I have a small rectangle storage seat that holds up to 220 pounds.
I use this to put on and take off my shoes and also for storage.
I also have a long deep rectangle storage bench that holds up to 660 pounds.
I use this for extra seating as well as storing my sheets sets and my winter or summer blankets.
Getting rid of it all can be stressful. What I do is zone cleaning. I divide my house into 5 zones. I spend 1 week in each zone. Deep cleaning, decluttering, and organizing. You can't do it all but adding a couple of areas to declutter in that week makes a huge dent. What you don't get the first time around, you'll probably get next time. It could take 3 months, but by that time, you're on autopilot.
That's awesome I love that idea
I definitely have too much. The biggest issue for me is that I also would be called an environmentalist. The result is that when an object is needing removed from my life, I don't like just putting it in the trash unless it's pure plastic (unmarked plastic is rarely recycled). So the result for me is that I have a few piles of stuff that I will take a part before putting it in proper recycling/trash/burn, these are my biggest hurdle right now.
Thank you for the video, it's given me some thought about how to manage what i need to remove more efficiently.
I’m so glad I happened upon your channel. It’s probably gonna take me a year to do it, but I’m determined to get rid of at least 50% of what’s in my house. Looking forward to feeling calm in my home again. Thank you!
That's awesome! Good luck! It's important to remember it's not about a number it's making your life and home better and more simple
@@waterfish6842Same! I try to designate an area for stuff that I have posted to sell and stuff that needs to be posted. Its annoying cuz I keep it in basement so it is out of my house but I have to haul it up n down to get pics to post etc. Sun-Times I have a shelf dedicated to this other times a box or two
@waterfish6842 Sorry about your health issues. Perhaps make a list of the things you have to sell, start selling them now and keep that money separate from your current budget for an emergency. That way you are reducing the clutter now and have the $ when you need it.
I have been decluttering for the last 5 years and still feel like I have too much stuff. But my mom has been telling me I don’t anymore. Either way, time for another round of decluttering this year lol
It's a joy ty not a one time thing
Last month i took multiple boxes to the thrift store. This month I have another 4 boxes of stuff in my hallway. I have spent the last year decluttering pretty heavily. I always think theres no way i could find more….. but I am always able to find stuff! Crazy!! But it just keeps getting easier and i feel a weight lifted when things are gone
The more I declutter, the more I see. Then another round of decluttering occurs
This makes me feel better about my slow but impactful process! I decided about two or three years ago that I wanted to be more minimalist and I've made continual progress but have really struggled more recently with the sentimental/irreplaceable stuff. But my mom also says it always looks great, lol, so I think I'm just getting more sensitive and attuned to my space 😅
This video does spur me on, though, to finally revisit things. It's probably been a year so maybe this time around I'll be ready to part with more!
@@Jessica_Jones yes I think having less makes you more sensitive to the things you do have. Perfect way to put it.
I check under my bed every couple of years. I keep expecting something to be staring back at me.
Just in time for some early spring cleaning!! 🎉
When I clean, I move everything and clean under the furniture. This process will keep you from accumulating too many things since it is such a hassle to move objects to do cleaning. We live above where we work (photo studio) and the same applies for the studio. We have two kitchens, three bathrooms and two studios in the 5000sq ft studio space. Everything gets moved so we can clean the floors and the tables and kitchens. Clients might not remember a sparkling clean commercial space but for sure they would remember a dirty space.
Yes!! Stopping at the source is so important!!
I used to be like this with my kitchen! Honestly when I cleared the kitchen with all the pots, food containers, letters in the kitchen draws etc… it felt so light and spacious.
It makes the whole room feel so much better
Never heard of Gabe Bult.............but here you show up on my home page about an important topic. I actually enjoyed this short and *tidy* video. So you earned a thumbs up and a subscribe from me. Thanks from Texas!!
Well thanks! Hope I can keep adding some value to you
I just started the decluttering process, and it's been difficult, but it already feels better. Thank you for the tips! 🤘
Same here Jenn how / what did you do to get the ball rolling 🤔 ❤
@johnhorchler667 I was just feeling like my home wasn't a relaxing place. And when I felt like that I knew I had to start. I started one room a time. And made a list a could check off as I went made me feel good. Donated a lot of gently used items that weren't really bringing me joy or serving a purpose, and cleaned everything. Bought some new organizers which was very satisfying!
@jennifere7395 okay 👍 cool that is what I had in mind I will just put a hand full in a box 📦 blindly just to get started & put a box a liability box 📦 by the door if you are wondering what liability is I watch Humphery yang &warren buffet videos as in liability means waste junk asset means Not wasting money.
@jennifere7395 I ment to say I watch Humphery yang & warren buffet & I keep watching Humphery yang video wealth inequality in America has never been worse. The middle.
it keeps me going as in keep me on track 👣 & Not F up.
Same here. Though there are still so much unused stuff to be given away/thrown out but it really gives me a sense of satisfaction and relief to clear some space. Baby steps. I know I'll get there 😅.
I realized I had too much stuff when I started watching this channel lol
It's helped me become an essentialist, and has drastically improved my workflow and lifestyle.
That's awesome! I love essentialism
Existentialists don't watch UA-cam
The “clean on saturdays” hit too hard 😅 I’ve been downsizing for a couple years now and thought that I’m finally at a place where I can routinely declutter minimally. Guess not 🤷♀️ cause Saturdays are basically my clean the house day 🙈 guess I’m aiming for the 17 minute rule now
"Decluttering inspo" is not something I expected I needed.
Less is definitely more! Perfect for the new year! Simple Living! Thanks for this!
I use the one in one out rule, generally, but I'm also still working on decluttering different rooms. I don't have a big house, so it is noticeable when my house is overflowing with stuff. Thanks for the common sense video, Gabe.
One in one out rule is great!
i have even better rule, 2 out 1 in
That's a thought.
My place annoys me when I walk in, but I swear I don't have too much stuff. I mean, I could, of course, always try to have even less, but I might really just not have enough space, be bad at organizing it or too lazy to put everything away. There's space in my closets - even in the kitchen and bathroom. I think there's a whole empty drawer in my bedroom. Paring it down would mean getting rid of stuff that serves an important (although sometimes rare) function or undecorating significantly.
And most of those points still apply.
I'm currently working a 4 out, 1 in; for clothes and shoes.
Well said. I don't consider myself a minimalist but often times find myself with their habits. (Yes it's only confusing the first 100 times people notice it.) I DO have too much stuff but I don't often feel the need to be rid of it all. And when I do. I do get rid of things. I feel much of what you have said, is true to the core of not just being a minimalist but a person who wants to live a functional life. You have earned at least one sub from that.
Thanks for the inspiration! I'm doing a spending fast for January. It's hard, but the savings will be worth it and I won't have to find a place for all the stuff I didn't buy!
That's great we do that a few times a year
I know I have way too much stuff. My wife and I do a decent job of getting rid of crap when it no longer serves its purpose.
Love this!
I definitely own too much stuff... and it really stresses me out. I like the mantra of "Don't put it down; put it away!" When my space is picked up and clean it's an easy mantra to live by, but then life happens and I let it slip and I find myself back in chaos again. I'm working on being better with this, but my biggest problem is that I have too much stuff, and not everything has a "home".
Can you do a content on how your house use to look like? with some old photos of how unorganized and messy your place was? it would be a great visual for us, since everything is nice looking now
You can see them in some of my older videos I'll try to find some shots for future videos
Thank you!!!! I really like and learn from your videos Gabe and I really enjoyed your humor in this one!! 😄😁
I did major decluttering about a year and a half or 2 years ago. Now if I see something I don't I immediately get rid of it. I don't wait until I am overwhelmed. It makes my life much less stressful.
& woo! Subscribed before you hit half a mill. Exciting
10 years, it’s been 10 years since I had anyone in my home, 10 years lost, no vacations, weight gain, lost opportunities, less freedom, anxiety, creative blocks…I started by getting rid of one of my storage units (I now have one and it needs to be gone by December 2024. My house will be a lot decluttered by June 2024. I will be able to have friends over…I may even think about dating again. I journal every day processes and how I’m feeling in the moment. I’m excited about regaining my freedom.
This is BRILLIANT ✨
awesome advice!
I am with you on this journey
My husband loves that I have OCD. I keep things clean and organized. He can always find everything
First time viewer and subscribed :) I began my declutter journey mid ‘22 and it continues -thanks for the informative & entertaining vid
I love to declutter but what's difficult in my house is the clutter of my partner. Unless they're ready to deal with it, then it's more stressful than it being your own stuff to sort and get rid of
This is true, the way i got around this (and didn't end up getting a divorce) was to agree that shared spaces need to be clean and he gets one (quite large, in our case) space to have all his crap. And i don't go in there.
My stuff is decluttered, and the common spaces like the kitchen and TV room area neat, and his office gives me anxiety but that's why i don't go in there 😅
Was that the Artist's Way I saw? I love that. I recommend it to clients all the time.
Such a useful, simple and interesting video. Thanks
You deserve the subs Gabe! Always come back to your channel for the minimal energy lol 🎉
2:39 : Thats a great set of books Gabe!
I needed to hear each and every thing you said…and as a result, I subscribed. Thank you so much.
This is good content. Subscribed.
I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you so much for the tips
Love the videos, Gabe! I hope you found that editor you were looking for to free up some of your time! Keep it up, your content adds a lot of value to our lives
Love this channel, Gabe. I just found you, and while I was already borderline neurotic in my minimalism before having found you, these tips (and your other videos) have allowed me to do so more thoughtfully and peacefully. Can’t thank you enough and looking forward to learning and exploring more.
Hey, new subscriber. Love what you said about choosing- to have options or freedom. That line is gold. Thank you! Will help me as I keep Decluttering, and make it a lot easier reminding myself of that.
I'm living in my Grandparent's appartament. They left sooo much unnecessary crap, that you can't even imagine. Feels really good after we do throw something out though
An eye opener video. I definitely have way too much stuff. 😣One more thing to add to my 2024 list to do. Thanks Gabe! 👍
Thank you for all the inspiration within your channel. We have TOO MUCH stuff and my parents keep bringing me more. I am finalizing my 12 Week Year Plan to begin on Jan 15th and "simplifying and minimalizing" our home and life is #1 goal in my plan. We want to live a life we dont want to escape from!
Like this, clear metrics on what's too much stuff
Great video and so many good key points. I love a simplistic life, it gives me time for the meaningful parts of life. Real connections over accumulation of things.
Filling a box right now 🎉. God bless your week ahead 😃
totally agree with the stuff on all the flat surfaces driving us crazy!!
Great video as always 🤩
Great info. More insight
Educational and entertaining!! 😊😊 I used to have reusable shopping bags everywhere. I went through them and kept four. the ones I kept are the ones that fold up into a little pouch and take up very little space. Yes clearing space really clears your mind! 💕💕
It really does!
Love your authenticity about “stuff” thanks for the info! KellyB
I don't have enough stuff for a moving truck. I will have a sign "free furniture" when I move. Some things I can keep at family's house for a short time between moves, some fit in my SUV.
Omg this is all so me :( or at least, the old me.. I’ve started shedding layers of stuff accumulated over decades..
I was never good at letting go of things and I loved to collect things like horses & books…
then I got very sick from tick diseases for 10 years which only compounded the problem.
Now my health is improving, I’m coming out of the fog, and I am on a med for focus (adhd) and I have been so inspired to just get rid of shit..
it’s so overwhelming and I’ve done so much the last few weeks and one can hardly tell by looking at my house… so I started writing down what I’ve done each day- what I decluttered & let go of & organized.. so at least I can remember my successes when I get discouraged.
It does feel great to let things go and to be changing my mindset and habits so that I will not get to this place again. I’m so ready and it is an exciting place to be.. I just wished it would go faster lol. Maybe if I had 2 weeks off of work & life in general and could work on this nonstop…
I’ve been listening to The Minimalists which has been incredibly helpful as they seem to identify the emotional/psychological reasons behind the accumulating & resistance to letting go.. I resonate so much with what they say - it’s been very illuminating.
I will love it when I can allow people into my home without feeling judgments from them or myself and when it’ll be easy to deep clean the house without hours of tidying & clearing space to scrub floors or vacuum.
My house wasn’t terrible and I’m not a hoarder just thought I had to have most of the things I thought were nice or that would add to my collections. Now I can enjoy the items on the shelves or in the pics online and then I leave them there and move on, knowing I am keeping space clear in my home by not purchasing.
We just moved and as I'm unpacking boxes I have a box to go to the thrift store I love watching your videos
Thanks, Gabe!!!
Thanks for watching Chris!
Fabulous! I will be showing this video to my husband and daughters. Thanks!
This makes a lot of sense. Thanks Gabe.
🙏
New subscriber. You randomly popped up on my feed today and I am literally purging and on a low buy/no buy for my 2024 goals! Need the motivation! Can’t be a minimalist, but I can most definitely be an organized, smart spending human this year! 😂❤️
oh how i hate spending a weekend day cleaning- good point!
Thank you!
Great tips!
Thanks 🙏
Bro at least see the full video just in 2 mins you judged the whole video lolzzzz😅😂😂😂
These are some great tips. Many videos I've seen just basically say, throw everything away and that can be difficult.
Saving, sharing this video and new subscriber. Thanks for the tips!
New subscriber… awesome video and looking forward to many more…❤
I have subscribed to the minimalist lifestyle for about 5 years. I do the one in one and I also always have a box going that goes to Goodwill every other week. At this point, I am not really sure where I am finding stuff yet, but I do. This year is a no spend year so I am hoping by December all that will be left in my home are only the items I love/need. My friends and family come over and are like "Where's all your stuff????". This is the best feeling ever! Love your channel. Been around for a few years and it is cool to see how you have morphed and grown. Much love from PA.
We really appreciate your effort on another great video. 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Needed this!! I literally see the leftover of “stuff” from the decluttering and trying to Swedish death style combined Marie condo style and yea… paralysis analysis… and everything else here.😅
Yes! Great video! Stopping it at the source!😊
For sure !
What i do is have dedicated spaces. For example, im slowly progressing towards minimalism. At the same time i need some extra stuff for entertainment (dishes, cutlery, cups). They moved out of my kitchen and into a dedicated cupboard in the dining room. That way i dont use them "accidentally" whilst still having what i need.
I've decluttered so much in the last few years. Recently, I gave a few things to people i know will bring them joy. One was an older model Bamboo tablet for someone who draws.
My mom and my sisters are constantly giving me stuff they think I need. Neither wil throw anything out, they just "give it to someone who needs it". And some I've hung on to. But I feel no guilt pitching the stuff the minute I get home. I live an hour away and they don't visit me. They'll never know.
My mom recently passed away in a house fire. She was healthy. I feel guilty that, I was relieved we didn't have to get rid of her crap. Everything was a total loss.
Other than necessities, I only buy something if it meets 1 of 2 categories: 1) I can make money with it - as in I need it for work and/or 2) It makes travelling easier or more comfortable. Other than that, nope, don't need it. For Christmas, my wife and I didn't buy each other gifts. We used a combo of mileage points and cash to purchase roundtrip tickets for our next adventure. I am literally picking one thing - be it a drawer or corner of my office, etc. - each week and doing a deep clean of getting rid of "stuff". Life is about creating memories, not gathering material possessions - and I will be the first to admit that I was caught in the "keeping up with the Joneses" rat race for a long time.
Here is a great tip: instead of waiting until you die to give your kids your possessions, if you're not using it anymore, ask them NOW if they want it. Otherwise they're just going to throw it away after you die or keep it as junk bc it reminds them of you and now you've just passed on your clutter to another generation.
My story.... can't agree more....thanks for d video
Most welcome 😊
Another great video Gabe. It is Saturday and this was gonna be a cleaning day.. you are the vibe I need for the day!
Nothing wrong with cleaning on Sat it just used to take most of the day for us
@@GabeBult what I love about your videos is that you admit some struggles and it is just practical. I’ve been pretty inconsistent recently .. allowing distractions and just not doing the basics. The winter blahs.. so these videos matter. Practical motivation and advice. Definitely appreciate you take the time to reply.
Great information, been spending the half of last year doing the declutter shuffle
That's great 👍
Just now I was telling my husband how nice it is to come home to a nice spacious minimalist home ...
I’m the one that don’t invite ppl over do to not able to clean up so so fast. I do get rid of things and sell things but and I’m working on being more simple so thanks for all the insight you’ve givin me!
It takes some time but for real it's changed how we see having people over
Subscribed :-) And absolutely love your suggestions. I'm taking this weekend to declutter. Slowly but surely it's getting done. Happy New Year 🎉
Happy New years 🎉
17 minute rule just cracks me up. I love it! 😂
Very official that one
i can't believe it's been 7 years since i decluttered for the first time by playing the Minimalist game and man did it change my life. I am so much more free now. Tried playing again before new year and only got to day 12 before i ran out of stuff to get rid of, so i think i have done well keeping my stuff minimal and functional
I did that game too! We had a massive garage sale at the end of it!
Great tips. My wife and I have been in a mode of doing a lot of these things over the last year. When I find it hard to get rid of things I've found it is easier to put it in a tote or box and then get rid of it after 6-12 months of not using it.
