Hello John what a really nice peg weather was goodyou caught some nice fish it don't get any better than that it's always a real pleasure to fish a nice stretch of river you just don't know what your going to catch stay safe son.
@@pnico3775 thanks, the videos were filmed between late June and early July, only just had chance to make them, that weather seems a long time ago now. I was really pleased to get some out having lost a few and now I know the river a little better, l'll hopefully bring some bigger specimens to the net in future. Tight lines pal. 🎣
great vid again john great camera work of the rod showing the bites and action as you played the fish 3 great fish to catch barbel chub and the bonus grayling top man top angler
Hi Mark, glad it inspired you, our little rivers need some more footfall on them to help ensure they remain accessible, now go out there and wet that line, I hope it tightens with a Derwent barbel 😉
Hi John. Just subscribed to your channel as promised. Looking forward to watching your future vids as you are an all rounder and interested to educate myself to new fishing techniques. Hard today on the Ouse . Tight lines mate for your coming adventures
Lovely meeting you today Stephen, I need to catch some fish to make a video lol. I'll try and make that happen soon, had a few tough sessions recently and 3 attempts for a barbel on the Ouse, all a matter of right time/conditions, right place. PS, Dave's letting me in the forum. Tight Lines bud.
Excellent vid this, never fished the Derwent but it’s good to see numbers of small Barbel, the future looks bright. I fish the Wharfe mostly and there’s plenty of Barbel but a different river to target is the future aim.
Thanks Ashley, I'm looking to fish the Wharfe some more, haven't been this year, (yet) but it's quite handy for me. The Derwent can be hard but they're there if you're willing to put the time in. I probably prefer the Swale for chances of producing chub and barbel but I'm also wanting to try the Ure, not a river I've fished many times, its a little further away so not quite as accessible for me.
Thanks Chris, it's nice to know someone gets something out of the videos. We all started somewhere and despite my 40 years of fishing, I'm always learning or trying to improve something and adapt to the situation in hand. Tight lines pal. 🎣
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel I'm trying to grow a facebook group called UK Fishing Collective I'd love it if you joined and shared your vids for people to see :)

Ive got the Leeds book now Ian. I went for a look at Ulleskelf on Saturday in the rain! Took a walk along the grinston park section, never fished that far up there before, used to go in the pegs around the 70s. Really wanted to trot a float through but had no gear with me, Sunday the rivers copped for all the rain so I avoided them. Wasn't sure where to leave the van on West End? so didn't walk that bit, the parking definitely looks a bit of an issue in the village at the bottom end. As for the Derwent, Leeds have Sutton, shared with York, its deep 16ft+ but normally a good winter roach venue. They also have Kexby below, haven't fished that since my teens but used to get some dace and chub at old hall farm which is marked St Lols farm on the Leeds map now (could access the river there by going through the farm years ago.
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel Good man John. I park on Ings Rd LS24 9SS unload gear at top of track, then take your car and park on the corner. Pick up yer gear walk to gate 50-60 yards over stile and bingo Wharfe on right. This is the bottom section of Railway Field. Can,t walk very far me due to failed hip surgery, so i fish very first peg you come too. Like a couple of scaffold poles erected to help you down to bankside, Beware tho mate bit muddy down there but a very nice peg. i trot a stick or waggler towards overhanging tree and bushes on your right, always caught here mixed bags of chub dace and roach and of course the obligatory bloody minnows. @@alycidon12 thanks Ian, I saw all the signs requesting parking on bell lane so wasn't sure, certainly looks close there. I'll be sure to give it a go soon and make a video for you 👍. Think there's some good barbel come out higher up the Wharfe, but I'm sure its just a matter of time before you get one. I'm still on a quest to get one out of the Ouse...should have gone when it was coming up on Sunday but went elsewhere bream fishing without much success 🤦♂️
Hi, It all depends on what you want to fish for, the time of year and the location, if it's barbel or chub on the feeder or bomb try pellets meat and casters in summer in shallower areas, the odd fishy boilie or two. In winter, maggots worms casters and pinkies score well on the deeper sections for roach chub perch and bream. The Derwent varies in depth greatly along its length and becomes tidal below Sutton Weir.
Not too bad considering how hard it can be to get Barbel on the Derwent. A lot of the those missed bites could well be from crayfish, they whack the tip about. then there's the magic Derwent snag that only reveals itself after you've been fishing the same spot for a couple of hours.
Those snags are bizarre. High summer probably not the best time of year to target them, definitely fished better with a bit of extra in. I'll fish it some more in future, but it's a tough river for certain.
Wow, I never knew they did that. Caught loads of signals on the Thames in Oxford before but never caught one in Yorkshire. Now apparently there's a problem with Chinese mitten crabs in the Trent!
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel I was blaming chub for the un-hitable bites. I changed to banded baits and the bits were the same, but the bans were ben cut. I was then informed that there was an increasing amount of signal crayfish in the river especially below the weirs, so that's what I'm assuming is causing the bites as other people have told me where there are a lot of signal crayfish they get similar problems. They seem especially fond of halibut pellets. I know somebody that's had a couple when using spam wrapped in Arma Mesh
@@jorvikangler I guess there's no getting away from them. I'll stick to braid and boilie stops for the hair to avoid cut offs from either rocks or the crays. Boilies seemed to get no indications so maybe the crays don't go for them or are less attracted to them but I didn't have any fish on them either so a bit of a dilemma when it comes to bait choice. Decisions, decisions?
A good watch mate cheers.. Is the peg still fishable directly behind the pub.. Near the overhanging willow.. Looked over the wall a couple of years ago and was overgrown.
Hi Steve, if you mean the one above the road bridge, yes but you really need to get in the river. I stick float fished it on this video ua-cam.com/video/YOq7qYo621k/v-deo.html the rest are overgrown but a couple could be opened up with a saw on a pole and a couple of steps cut in. The problem is where the banks have been reinforced with gabion baskets, that peg I was feeder fishing had that so no easy way in/out anymore, shame because it used to be a great float peg.
Thanks for the reply John watched your other videos. And the peg was just above the one you was trotting on I think. But going back 20 odd years. Thanks again.
Yes that one was overgrown, looks a great peg too and as I say with a little bit of work could be accessible, not sure what the bank is like, still a bit of a drop into the river, I think it would be possible to cut a couple of steps in.
Cheers Robert. I've only been out one evening on the Derwent this season on the HDAA pegs, nothing but rattles off small chub. The car park pegs are easier fishing I think.
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel peg 2 on hdaa has done me well for both chub and barbel (nothing huge but good sport). Fishing right in the middle between the streamer weed. 15lb mainline and 12lb hooklinks needed though to extract them safely

I'm just below the Weir in Stamford Bridge, behind the shops. Free parking is available in the public car park and you can fish the first field below the road bridge on the car park side for free, good barbel pegs and comfortable. If you want to get on the peg I was on, walk through the picnic area and to the left but it's a bit tight since they built the flood wall so not suitable for a wheelchair.
As someone new to the Derwent this year, this is the sort of thing that makes it so much easier to understand what to try. Really helpful.
Thanks Alex, glad you found it useful. Also check out the stick float session I did there.
Having struggled on the Derwent a few times this is the video I've been waiting for.... As always great stuff!
Thank you, it's not the easiest of swims, bit of a parrot cage. A bit of extra water in definitely helps, both for landing them and getting the bites.

I suspect they don't, it's been 13 years since I first caught one on the Thames and think they were there long before that.

Yes the rod is a 2.25lb Daiwa twilight but it has a twin top so the quiver is more like a 1.75 top.

There's no room to side cast, there's trees and shrubbery both sides.
