  • In this video I replace the labels on three Sega Genesis games that I bought to play on the Genesis Model 2 which I restored in an earlier video.
I disassembled each cartridge and cleaned the shells with soapy water. A couple of the boards were dirty so I used some isopropyl alcohol, and cleaned the contacts with an eraser and contact cleaner. The screws were a little rusty so I put them in vinegar for a while.
After removing the stickers, I got rid of the adhesive residue with Goo Gone. I found some game label images on the internet, cleaned them up, and printed them on label paper which I then laminated.
    Parts used in this video:
    Full Sheet Labels: www.amazon.com/Full-Sheet-Lab...
    Self-Adhesive Laminating Sheets: www.amazon.com/Avery-Self-Adh...

Looks great. Late to the show here, next time try Bestine on the label. It will not hurt plastic or the label. I use it to take stickers off cardboard game boxes, manuals and labels.

The next sound you’ll hear is that of Pat Contri’s heart giving out at the sight of this video.

The "Not for Resale" on Sonic the Hedgehog is a sticker on top of the label. At least the copy we had was.

I soak my cartridges in Goo Gone as it doesn't hurt the plastic any and you have to clean the shell anyways and you can reuse the Goo Gone as many times as you need. The only issue is that Nintendo cartridges have a thick plastic film on their cartridges so it may take some soaking time to remove the label or you can try to peal a little bit off after soaking it in water.

That's an interesting approach. I'm not sure I could handle the smell, though. Even with the amount that I use, the strong smell bothers me.

I miss when you could take your games in to video game stores to get fixed if it got damaged they don't do that anymore

Where did you get the multi mini tool set, I have one but it didn't have everything I need like what yours has?

Do a search for "iFixit Moray Driver Kit". I like it better than ones I've had in the past.

Is there a database of game labels that don't suck? I went to that one site, but they have only a handful of games.. and some of the labels aren't even scaled as if one has to do it themselves. I just want to print and go.

segaretro.org does have a lot of Mega Drive cartridge scans, but you might have to search elsewhere for the top part of the label. I think it's going to be a bit of manual work regardless, unfortunately.

I never thought to do this. Is this illegal, lol.

Only if you sell the items as 'like new' or 'mint'. While it might ding a few bucks off if you sell them as 'cleaned and restored' or 'excellent condition with reprinted labels' it's totally fine.
For personal collection reasons? You can do whatever you want with the cartridges you own, it's distribution/sales you have to worry about.

It's no more illegal than restoring a classic car. I'm not trying to fool anyone. I do this for fun and play them with my kids.
