- Why is a Boss 302 Mustang called a “Boss?” Larry Shinoda! Here’s the history, and how it connects with the Road Boss and Field Boss. #hotrodhistory #cartrivia #larryshinoda #davidfreiburger

Boss was also a slang term for cool back in the 60's.
In particular, the term came from the Drake Chenault west coast radio stations:
ua-cam.com/video/5vj3_tLEHXM/v-deo.html
And of course Boss Radio was *so* pervasive that it made its way into no less than a George Carlin sketch:

THIS is the correct answer
Larry Shinoda was interned in a camp for Japanese Americans during WWII. He was a kid. He designed and built recliner chairs made from wood crates and families in the camp got them. So he was a designer as a kid. He also designed Corvettes in the sixties.
Yes he was in Manzanar. And he partially designed the ‘63 based on an illustration by Pete Brock
It differed substantially from regular 302s, featuring four-bolt main bearings, screw-in freeze plugs, higher nickel content, and cylinder heads using a canted valve design developed for the 351C, which made its debut in late 1969 Mustangs. The block had a thicker deck and a taller intake manifold due to the heads.
This is the explanation I was looking for! Basically a 4 bolt main 302 block with 351 Cleveland heads and all the other specs you pointed out. Great job!
Sad how this dude reduced it to an appearance package. That’s totally not boss.
@@LuckyCharms777 Freiberger isn’t much of a Ford guy. I think they’re Kryptonite to him.
Love these short form history lessons!
More to come!
Great to learn a Japanese American was involved in designing Detroit iron.
I love it.
He was in Manzanar as an early teen. He also served in Korea.
And farm tractors.
Don't forget the BOSS 351 in '71😊
The best BOSS is the 71 351…
Also the BOSS 300, I6 with 625 hp. 👍
Hey hey hey! We have one of those!
THEY BOTH SCREAMED,I PUT ENGINES IN BOTH OF THEM IN 1973,BOTH NEEDED LOWER ENDS REBUILT,SCREAMED
In Australia this engine evolved into the legendary Barra engine putting out 430+ HP.
It was 60s slang. You'd say "that's boss", meaning bad-ass, dope, or killer, in other decades.
That was where I heard it came from.
boss radio was a popular genre
You are right. Dave is wrong.
Yeah I do have a mag some where from 68 69 switb a Shinoda interview that says it was based on the slang term.
Shinoda also designed thingie slot car bodies in the 60s that have a decent following.
Some kids today will still say that.
I remember a TV ad when I was a kid, they showed the car ripping up the road with a voiceover saying: "What the Boss says, GOES".
Interesting story. I don't have a Boss Mustang but do have several Field Boss tractors. Lol
There was an article in Antique Tractor telling how he designed the original 4-150 White Tractor and ended up designing the entire Tractor line afterwards.
Ok, I actually did NOT know this! Wow! Interesting! Thanks for posting.
Dont forget the Boss 351 as well!
1 minute Short…was keeping it to 69 and 70
I was 12 years old when them Boss’s came out in Detroit. They were the shit!
I was eleven in houston texas and they were the shit
I’ll be damned, super interesting. 👍🏻
Thanks Freiburger!
It was the boss car referring to the boss car it has a Windsor block and vleveland heads. Smaller spark plus for bigger valves. And a whole mess of go go fast hardware.
It even had screw in freeze plugs for some reason. I suppose on a race engine there's a chance they will fall out from vibrations.
could fit one's fist in intake Port
351 heads on a 302 block. Ford was experimenting with them in early '68 before the '69 model year rolled off the line in summer of '68. My dad had one sitting in our parts storage shed. It had three dual carbs and intake. Don't know what happened to it
David, you are the hot rod historian! Love these vids
Shinoda is that in relationship to Mike shinoda from Linkin Park
That's incorrect. When they left GM they knew Chevrolet was planning on naming the Camaro the Boss but Bunky and Larry had more control over the small Hi Po department and could do a lot of things without corporate permission. They were able to ack faster then Chevy and named the NASCAR oriented 429 and the trac oriented 302 BOSS before Chevy could make it official if nothing more than to stick it to GM.
Having read up on these types of stories for 40 years, that’s one I’ve never heard. It seems unlikely, as Knudsen left GM after the Camaro was already in its second year of production.
@@TheDavidFreiburgerPay attention to what you just said, He left after the second year of Camaro production (somewhere in 68). Both BOSS versions came out in 69, the year Chevrolet planned on using that name in a HIPO version
American Muscle more JDM than I thought hehe
That's a good one😅
My dad had 1970 Mustang Boss 302. It was an absolute beast. He had gone through and upgraded everything. Engine was bored 30 over and made over 500hp.
Dude I've watched your stuff for years your a walking welth of information
Growing up as a mid-western farm kid, and having several white tractors on the farm, including a field boss… this is some cool info that I was totally unaware of!
It’s kinda funny realizing that I like certain engineers just the same as I like certain directors or musicians and such.
I miss old roadkill, this feels like a fun fact you'd tell while on the way to a hotel way past schedule and huddled in blankets in a boss 302 with no heat and a plexiglass windshield.
Larry shinoda! He was also contracted by cragar before his death to design a new cragar ss
He did the 17-inch S/S II
I used to drive a White Road Boss tractor with a 350 Big cam Cummins . At the bottom of the speedometer there was a WM .
My truck's Speedometer Needle would go right down to it , about 92
mph . Hauling oilfield pipe throughout West Texas in the 80s..
The 302 boss was windsor block with Cleveland heads
There are quite a few changes to the Boss block, but a Clevor is a common aftermarket practice of Cleveland heads on a Windsor block.
“RECTRANS” deserves a long format video of its own.
The field boss was a pretty great tractor for the time. We had a neighbor that just retired and he still used two of them to farm
Semon and Larry were the dream team. Until they weren't.
Larry was the F-ing BOSS!
Thats pretty damn cool!!
Another awesome video, keep up the great work. Never would of known this until your video. Great job.
One man behind so many icons
That's my favorite kind of Mustang.
The Boss 429 was dope, totally far out and fabulous.
The Camaro you showed was a R/S Z28., Rally Sport had the headlight covers.
In 1968 Plymouth advertised the 1969 Plymouth GTX as " the boss "
Sox & Martin had “The Boss” on a number of cars
Man Larry kinda got shafted. Always respected him. Wow.
Thanks for the info!
Those revcons are actually cool.
Forgot about the boss 351
Shorts are limited to 1 minute, so I stuck to 69-70
Great to know these facts!!!!
Shinoda and Bunkie were two of the best people that happened to the Ford Mustang. Without Bunkie we wouldn’t have the 351C and the Boss 351 Mach 1.
Without Shinoda we wouldn’t have one of the most beautiful Mustangs, the ‘69 Mach 1
Boss 302 had 351c heads and 4v intake making it a pretty good choice for upper rpm power
Larry Shinoda a designing genius and a legend.
I kinda like the hidious moterhome😊
That rv looked awesome
Thats a good story on the Boss part but few folks know the little 302 v8 had 460 big block heads on it 2.25 intakes an 1.80 exhaust..in the race car it made a very easy 500 hp...an useally put the trans am competetors a lap or 2 behind....the team said thru carb changes they could get 600hp...but it was reliable an had the field covered so 600 hp an a bad arse carb change was never needed..according to Mark Donhue the car was great just as i was...500 isa ton...for any motor...some of those semi trucks 400 hp desiels but have crazy torque numbers
Because of the heads on the engine
Dont forget the Australian Boss 260, 290 from the 2001 -2005 Ford Falcons , 5.4 litre Quad Cam 4 valves per cylinder , T56 six speed manual. The 260 and 290 are hp / kw ratings of the motors , there was also 317 and 325 kw engines before we swiched to the Coyote 5.0 untill 2017. It was called a Boss because the old incorrect line was the original US Boss 302 was a 302 Windsor with Cleveland heads, not tru because the original Boss 302 was a redesign in 1967 of the 302 Tunnel Port engine after it was banned, then the new cantered valve heads were put on the 302, so it cant be a 302 w with Cleveland heads as there was no Cleveland till 1970 . But moral of the story , Ford Australia wanted some old school credability and ran with the fake 302w with Cleveland heads story. In Ford Australias thinking the 5.4 V8 was fitted with 4.6 litre Cobra Quad Cam heads , thus a new Boss motor. The 5.4 was also available in 3 valve here but they sold so few ive never seen one !
I remember the first one I ever saw.....My jaw dropped....I was 9 years old and it was the hottest car EVER...Yellow with black trim , as shown....Not long after , at the Sears store they had one....Hot Wheels...it was cheery red.but i got it anyhow.....And that day I had my very own Boss (I also was the first kid in the neighborhood to own a Hot Wheels car...)
Is this basically condensed Super Turbo Story Time? Great video! Shinoda may have designed the best looking mustang of all time #Disgustang
Actually, he did not do the Mach 1
@TheDavidFreiburger I was under the impression Shinoda designed the 69-70 Mustang. In my opinion the nicest looking mustang ever is the 69 fastback.
@TheDavidFreiburger who was the chief stylist behind the '69-'70 stangs? I've always called them Shinoda Mustangs!
There was also a Boss 351 in 71
Yup. I could not cover it all in 1 minute.
Bad ass scary car
Cant forget his 94 boss shinoda. I am curious if anyone knows why ford named the 6.2 a boss motor. This is the 6.2 that closely followed the modular engines and is used in 2014 ford raptor.
The white tractors weren’t completely designed by him they were from the previously built Oliver tractors
Not the Windsor block with Cleveland heads?
The word Boss was a slang term like "cool" or "neat" back in the late 60's. Boss was like saying " bitchin "
The 351 boss was similar to the Oz gt/ho falcon
You forgot his work on the corvette, design of c2, mako shark, Camaro 69 and z28, ford Mach 2, Mach series mustangs, ford torinos, Dodge Charger and latter tribute to shelby with helping the dodge copper head and viper. He was always the guys telling rangers builders and designers to not use fake scoops and body frills. To him. Everything had to be functional. And a big fan of small block power.
I didn’t “forget,” it’s just a one minute video on a different subject.
@@TheDavidFreiburger no worries.
There was also a 1971 Boss 351
...and that's why I have a Boss 260 (kw) 5.4 litre V8 Falcon? Cool....
Wow , I remember that boss white big rig but not the farm tractor..
Awesome
Describing the Dodge based RV as hideous is the perfect adjective.
Life changing info...😅
Boss is a Windsor block with Cleveland 4v heads..
How BOSS!
Because it sound tuff. 😂
Because it was the 70’s man!
The 69 and 70 were the best Mustangs of all time, particularly the BOSS.
Sounds better than "Employee 302"!
Cool.
BOSS, came from the engine design. The crank bosses were beefed-up in an effort not to go to a four bolt main.
Never heard that. The Boss 302 blocks DO have four-bolt mains.
I've always heard that they strengthened them because the Windsor blocks were good but the heads sucked. And the Cleveland blocks sucked while the heads were good and the boss was a blend of best from both motors
i would buy that RV
Whaaaaaa😢
Sounds like shinoda was a bit of an apple polisher!
Domo arigato Shinoda san
🤘🍻🤘
It is called a boss because that was a slang term for something that was cool
also a Boss 351 in 71
I think it was called Boss because it WAS.
A Boss 302 ford with Cleveland heads will make more horse power in the upper rpm's than any other American 5 litte small block. A built 351 Cleveland can make 500 horse without any port work, a 350 chevy or 360 dodge will not make 500 horse without port work or without aluminum heads.
That isn't how I remember it, why is they putting people into positions that never did what they're saying they did????
Also the boss 335 GT
I though I was gonna learn something worth wild from this, like maybe it had larger valves or higher compression or something, but NOPE! Just had a nice strip lol!🤷♂️😏🙆♂️
There's always really wicked stories like that floating around in the early days of automotive
Then it got to the point where i'm good design the wrong car
It's called Boss because every other car calls it "Sir."
I always thought it was modern youth speak. "Dude, that's BOSS!" A bit late, but better than never.
What about the BOSS 351
🏁🏁⚡🆒🔥
The boss 302 is a small V8 whether boss or not... 350 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme would turn a Boss 302 sideways
why is it called a mustang cobra? Is it a horse snake?
The Discoverers were NOT hideous! Or maybe my taste was flavored by 1973's "Slither."
Big money
And let's not forget the fact that if it wasn't for Chevy Ford would have never made a 302
A true boss is a Windsor block with Cleveland heads that is a boss engine
And now you know
No employee verson
And a boss 351 Cleveland
