  • Buffett & Burry are closely watched because of their history of success at investing and we have just found out what they have been up to over the last quarter of 2023 via their 13F filings. I thought this would be a good opportunity to drill into what they have changed because it looks quite contrarian on the surface. While I don’t think copying billionaires is a good idea, learning from them is worthwhile, so in this video, I share some of what I learned from their latest stock buys and sells.

      Thanks, I'll think about it. However, I have a defensive position on the issue: I have a hunch that the PE ratio will turn out better if I instead spend £450 a year on Champagne and loose women.

    Picking individual Chinese stocks just seems like an unnecessary risk when you can get great returns from developed markets. It does not matter how good or high quality a Chinese stock is, the Chinese Communist Party can cause it to crash at any moment with new regulation or making the CEO go missing. Doesn't matter how much research you do in the fundamentals of the business.
    Then again, I guess it also comes with potential high reward. Not for me though. I'll keep a small holding in an emerging markets ETF, but that is about it.

      And even then we can't trust the business fundamentals of Chinese companies

      China could withdraw foreigner's property rights at any time as they did in 1949.

      Agree. Government has too much power over Chinese companies, and I think it's better to stay away.

      China market is not going to be down 25 years. :)
      On the contrary, it's going to be world's leading economy in few year, already is that if we measure by PPP GDP or exports...

    Interesting you think and lump
    Renewable energy as a single sector; there will be major losers M&A as renewables struggles to operate without subsidies, eventually. But the energy business relies on boasting reduced costs, but that also translates to “how can I make money at these prices?”.

    Big investors can take risk of experimenting in their portfolio. They have more than enough saving. Most of us don’t. So China is a NO.

    China is cheap enough that it may be worth taking a small bet on though it may become cheaper due to US election or could be already priced in.The upside is China’s government may not react as negatively as would be expected due economy

    Good stuff. Although it seems you haven't followed China closely... Chinese institutional investors are buying stocks in order to get stock market out of its slump etc.
    It alone may not be enough but it clearly signals that the leadership cares about the stock market. And calling world's 2nd largest market (largest on GDP PPP) "uninvestable" is complete US propaganda.

    Anyone else thinking Buffett is buying the Amazon shares bezos is selling? I think that's the unreported purchases. Just a theory.

      Amazon is evil. Especially the Ring video doorbells. It's as if they want to take over the world and will not stop until they've achieved it.

    I don't like Buffett's portfolio... 50% apple is simply too much. Burry actually seems a more balanced investor.
    Then again Buffett has trouble to find big enough companies to invest to...
    Both have plenty of cash ready from what I hear.

    Buffett selling Apple to free up cash? Unlikely, as of 12/31/23 BRK had $167 billion in cash, more than enough for any purchase he could want to make…

    • @TomsPersonalFinance
      @TomsPersonalFinance 2 місяці тому +3

      Yeah, I thought the same. He definitely does not need to free up cash!

    • @mikerodent3164
      @mikerodent3164 2 місяці тому +1

      I read somewhere that it was something to do with a fiscal manoeuvre ... much as we might do a bed-and-breakfast in a GIA at year-end to mop up what remains of the CGT allowance (£6k this year, £3k in 24-25, and probably about £5 after the Starmer enters No. 10). But, as a big holder of BRK.B, I do have some doubt about his holding of AAPL. It isn't as big as Ramin's graph seems to show, because BH has all sorts of holdings, including private capital (not easy to value), bonds and cash. But I think it's about 22% overall. That's a lot of faith in a single moat.

    • @789crispy
      @789crispy 2 місяці тому +1

      It could be Tod or Ted's positions. They might have wanted to free up cash so they can buy something else.

    • @stephen2203
      @stephen2203 2 місяці тому

      Does anybody think that Apple has reached the end of its road? We (consumers) need a new product, the new iPhones etc are simply more expensive versions of the old iPhones etc. Lack of evidence of 'blue sky thinking' might cause BH to start reducing their holding and with such a massive holding Mr. Buffett could certainly get a look under the hood (bonnet).

      Bitcoin is strong currently because it has been sanctioned as an investment in the US. ETFs are buying it up and pushing the price north. If people cash their positions in there will be selling and that will push the price down. It is a very volatile market so I’ll keep my money in high yielding and mature stocks like Diageo, Vodafone and Legal & General. PayPal and Lloyds bank are newer additions. I’ve gambled before and for me it hasn’t paid off.

    No one should copy Michael Burry. He’s famous because of a film. A great investor he ain’t!
