  • Friends, our Gospel for this Sunday is one of the great passages of the New Testament-namely, the Beatitudes from the fifth chapter of Matthew. "Beatitudo" just means happiness, and the one thing we all want is to be happy. Well, here is the Son of God telling us how-so let’s pay close attention!

Yes. He gives awesome sermons. It is disappointing when the priest puts me to sleep during a non-inspiring sermon. However, the Eucharist is the source and summit and should be the reason for standing room only. Unfortunately many Catholics don’t have Full Faith in the Eucharist.

The eight keys to happiness (Beatitude):
    1. Letting go, emptying oneself, and giving oneself away (to the other).
    2. Admitting one's faults and being sorrowful about them, thus opening up to forgiveness which removes the burden of suffering.
    3. Being humble and close to the ground
    4. Being hungry for Holiness (friendship with God)
    5. Being compassionate
    6. Being single-hearted, gathered, centered and anchored around one thing - to please God
    7. Being a peacemaker since God is peace
    8. Enduring persecution for righteousness sake

@@RosalindToh Hi there, I’m a catholic priest and I understand Pope Francis’s point, as I also understand Bishop Barons’. First of all this is a recommendation and not a rule. And the question we should ask ourselves before jumping to conclusions such as “to destroy the church” is to know the reason why the Pope would suggest such thing. Popes can be mistaken but not stupid. In my opinion Pope Francis’s concern is to be careful in not “abusing” the liturgy in which the homily becomes the focus rather than Christ in the Eucharist. It’s all about balance. Besides, some priests may speak for 20 minutes about the weather or golf, whereas some can change hearts with 7 minutes. My homilies are long, I confess and it’s very easy also to use it as a pedestal where we priests can use as a narcissistic tool where Christ becomes hidden and the priests and his talents are highlighted. So let us be careful how we judge things. Peace

@@renanrobertocosta5585 Thanks. I'm a baptized & confirmed Catholic in Malaysia (a Muslim majority country), but I often attend Protestant worship services too, besides attending Catholic Mass every week. A homily is defined as a sermon which is based on the scripture readings which r used in church for Mass. If it has nothing to do with the Bible reading, it is not a homily but just a sermon (which can be on any topic/subject). Catholic priests are supposed to give homilies, but many don't. Their sermons are often uninspiring, so I can understand why Catholic churches in Europe are mostly empty (& some church buildings had been converted to mosques)! Thank God this problem of 'near-empty church buildings' is not found in my country, Malaysia (Catholics here still take Mass seriously). I wonder if Europe's problem also occurs in America & Canada? America has many inspiring preachers (eg, Bishop Barron) & their homilies had evangelized many. I've noticed that sermons given by Protestant pastors are ALWAYS based on scripture readings chosen for their worship services, so they're actually homilies (in my country), which are often uplifting & evangelizing! Christ also speaks through the preaching of pastors/priests.

There's nothing wrong with longer sermons, if they're wonderful! The line comes at 3 minutes and 31 seconds into the video. I used the English 'happiness' for 'beatitudo' which Bishop has in the Sermon. *"The key to our beatitudo is being forgiven for my sins."* (3: 31-3: 36)
It's in context of the 2nd Beatitude, "Blessed are the sorrowful, for they shall be comforted" and the explanation begins from 1: 56 onwards in the video.

I can remember who was the former protestant who said he was used to 40-minutes sermons and when he first saw a Catholic priest preaching his homily in under 15 he was like "that's it?"
As a former protestant myself, I tell you you can easily spend 20 and I'll find it concise 😁

    Dear Bishop Barron,
For not a few Catholics, the Sunday Homily is all that have for their spiritual formation and nourishment. Your homilies, for someone like me who has been 55 years a priest, are indeed an inspiration. I listen to them every day as my spiritual reading. "No Barron, no breakfast!" God bless you and your ministry. Please pray for and bless me!

God bless you and our dear Holy Father.

I feel pretty blessed as a Homecare worker who happens to be a member of a 12-step group. I've learned not to throw the first stone, and since my burnout God has presented me with wonderful insights on how to apply my faith and my program in ALL areas of my life.I pray the Holy Spirit leads me to attend Church in my neighborhood where I can fully express my worship with believers!
Expressions of love and empathy for most of my fellow humans have deepened greatly as I faced many calamities lately, but as I emptied all my cares GREAT MIRACLES have quieted storms and lead me to believe that every day he has potentially wonderful works prepared as his Spirit leads me!!

The Good News should not be constrained by the editorial imperatives of a TikTok video or the afternoon soccer schedule. We delegate control over the homily to the Holy Spirit and trust His faithful servant, Bishop Barron, will take the appropriate amount of time to give life to his message…be that 8 minutes, 88 minutes, or 888 minutes. God bless you!

Thank you father. I need very seriously be much more humble before God, and to stay in fear of ever exercising a willful pride in his presence, which would be a gateway into the darkness of hell, and separation from God, alienating me from the life he will otherwise breath into my spirit. Thankfully I have a lot to keep me humble; plainly evident.

@vfgnbnjm Yes father, I have a great deal to learn, and something always just keeps teaching me that. I see how I am as vulnerable as Lucifer himself, and do not want to be taken into a separation from the Father, who is God, and Truth, and in whose sufferings I care to abide. As so said the talking ass who spoke to the profit. "That's amazing shit."

Insightful and thought provoking (as usual)thank you Bishop Barron). Pope Francis's comments regarding 8 minutes (or less) for poor preaching that is ill-prepared and indulgent would be our blessing! B Barron is in rare homilist company with engaging knowledgeable commentary; he cares deeply about God and the Church and each one of us, and this resonates deeply. Preach on Padre, many of us thirst for this after or before attending our own Parishes. God bless you for your goodness.

Dearest Bishop Robert Barron, Good Morning!
Thank you for the Sunday sermon today. The eighth beatitude serves as a reminder to all Christians and it requires courage. Matthew chapter 5, "Blessed are those who are persecuted."Ohm, I speak up for my soul, especially people who are victims of gossip, discrimination, mucking, disbelieving, rejection, etc. Whenever I go I encountered persecution. During my reconciliation prayers, Jesus confirmed that I will experience persecution, but He invites me to respond through rejoicing and gladness to develop into a Christian with deep spiritual formation in the image of Jesus Christ and the joy of being faithfully united with Him. I always pray every day to our loving Heavenly Father, who wants me to communicate with Him through prayer. He always listens to me when I pray. The daily prayer always blesses me, my family, and those I pray for( conversion of the sinners, etc ). It also invites more peace into my life and helps me learn more about God's plan for me. I believe that persecution arising from unrighteous behavior is not blessed. If I fail at my fault, I should expect to suffer negative consequences. Jesus is talking about the blessing of being persecuted for doing righteousness. Bishop, I pray for mercy on behalf of those who are lost. Let God's mercy fill their hearts so that they may be able to know that Jesus Christ is the true living God who was and is to come and to help them to know that it is only in surrendering themselves to Jesus Christ our Lord that they will find real rest and unconditional love. Also, please pray for the Dreger family. God blesses you all.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us.
St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us
St. Pope John Paul, pray for us.
    St. Micheal, pray for us.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
    Very truly yours,
