This gives massive Books of Sorrow vibes, both in style and depth. It follows the story of the Qugu, a species first mentioned in the Books of Sorrow. It is a difficult read but very enjoyable.

To say that something is Jovian means that it's of Jupiter or like the outer planets, but since no one really lives there until the colony ships right? Like he's not human. What is he? Maybe he is Qugu and survived the genocide and comes to live in the solar system past the asteroid belt. Wouldn't that make him Jovian?

The "Death Grove" makes me think of Egregore, and it's darkness properties of consciousness
If I'm not mistaken, in season of the haunted it is mentioned that egregore spawns from death
It would make sense that the "virus" Oryx mentions is Egregore, that has somehow formed a symbiotic relationship with this species
There is egregore in the pale heart. It can be seen in the part of the first mission when you unlock Prismatic.
@@vV_Viggo That being there is simply a byproduct of the Witness' corruption however, not natural to the pale heart.
@@vV_Viggo Also the memory sections/fractures are filled with it. Honestly amazed as we got closer the Witness that there was not more. I had expected a massive section of just Egregore of corrupted darkness and Ascendant plain instead the memory sections/fractures of just the landscape of the Traveller and Pyramid ships.
@@KennyisLB Well, the closer you get to the Witness the more you see all the symbols it uses such as that angular root etching on the walls or floor. That might be the symbol for Egregore since it’s shaped similar to the fungal growth, but the straight lines and angles seem to imply that it’s a refined form of Egregore. That’s probably why there is less of the wild Egregore seen when you approach the Witness.
Qugu sound inspired a bit by Dune: nectar = spice, TeQal = Paul, they both have the ancestral memory. Cool stuff!
Glad someone else said it, also the shai-hulud could be called "large beasts".
Gardener and Winnower could be seen as the original end of the series before the son did more. Bungie has a lot of old scifi heads working for them. It's impressive.
Back in D1 with lore cards, I feel we were introduced to a world so alien and far removed from whatever experience of SciFi we've had in games. The stormjoys, the bait stars, the Harmony, the Ecumene, etc. Then something happened to the narrative team that these cosmic battles were reduced to a tall, unibrow SOB that had a personal vendetta against Traveler-blessed humanity, which feels so petty and normal and "human". I'm sure part of the justification for this feeling of closeness of The Witness to us Guardians is that after 10 years of defeating gods and turning them into guns, it is only natural that we understand more about the forces that would in our beginnings feel alien and distant. This lorebook, however, is a return to that form. All the lorebook feels so alien, so distant, so unlike anything that we have experienced so far in the Destiny universe. I really hope going forward we explore these concepts in-game, and not only in reading.
The Rubicon lore book helped re-introduce the Witness from a different perspective for me.

I would love to finally see a 3rd darkness subclass added to the game in “Frontiers”. Arc still doesn’t have a darkness counterpart.

Well in the post final shape campaign missions, micah straight up says in the moon pyramid mission that eris is investigating the power of nightmares, which are red and would corroborate with nightmares being mentioned alongside strand and stasis in one of the cutscenes from last year, and the image of a "leaked" red subclass pic that bungie took down very quickly and didnt comment on what it was
Man these people have a lot of similarity to the Vex:
-getting directed by Minds.
-ships been controlled by the thoughts, vex minds control the units.
-Using portals to jump locations.
-looking at the future.
Maybe is just a big coincidence.
So pretty much the dune thing where they drink from a nectar ish thing and gain access to see and interact with past ancestors and see the past and future
I wonder if the Qugu are going to be the things that end up influencing the Hive in their episodes. For some reason the tentacle mane or beard me think of Cthulhu's own imagery, which has that very distinctive tentacle beard. Paired with what Bungie said about an eldritch influence, it could be the Qugu. It could be cool to see how a conquered species could influence the Hive, kinda like how the Psions have influenced the Cabal even though they are vassals.
Oddly enough, there’s only creature I can think of who sounds like he looks remotely similar to a Qugu:
Xur. He’s definitely got those tentacles, but they’re probably not a beard for him, and seem to be his actual face, and he probably doesn’t have those backwards legs, either.

Their mane tentacles kinda remind me of Xur face under the hood. Maybe he got tentacles for a mane, as well.

This lore is so good. Man when is Bungie going to make a damn anime or something? No live action crap, just a sick sci-fi anime where they can fully flesh out the crazy lore entries. I'd love to see something about the Qugu, the Harmony, Lubrae, etc.
Start at the hive sister's and show their journey(little bit of universal slaughter, touch of genocide) to the end

I'd love it if they did it the way they do their cutscenes. The death of Cayde 6 cutscene was just top notch and I'd love an entire series like that to retain the grittiness of the world
Love this - thank you for posting it. I wonder I they encountered Oryx's Dreadnaught instead of Savathun? The description at 19:00 "a massive vessel - a graven spinal corridor" sounds more like the piece of Akka that he built the ship from. "To make his ship, Oryx scrimshawed one piece of Akka, who was dead but far from gone."
also the sparks reacting and the shockwave reminds me of the oryx and awoken space battle
I would love to see the bungie teams reading history. They give shout outs to so many old scifi stories. Moorcock, Herbert and King coming together and if they add Lovecraftian stuff...jeesh. Let's see what they cook up in Heresy.
I can see why Savathun wiped them out. From what I understand of her psychology, such a symbiotic relationship would be an anathema and would creep her out as 'wrong'.
Savathun does not want to be part of something else.
She does not like her identity being subsumed by another and doesn't want others being subsumed either.
I feel the Qugu are somehow related to the Conductor as well - I just don't know how but there's this great phrase "We will see what has caused silence in the system of Se'Un and return them into concert with the Qugu." - I know the Conductor is currently agreed to be Maya, there may be some relation. Perhaps the Qugu are using Maya's Vex connection to create a new armada using vex constructs. Also the gold sleeve that pours knowledge and data into Te'Qal feels like a transfer of vex data. Also the gold sleeve reminds me of the golden crested figure that we currently think of as Maya/The Conductor.
Additionally - the Lorebook Polyphony features teardrop shapes underneath the symbol of Failsafe - their ships are described in that same shape too.
Perhaps the Qugu and the conductor are allied in some way.
Also the use of the vision format ":Te'Juna:cries out alone:extinguishment:the old fear:shared burden:" - feels a lot like the predictive format used by Psions (except without the use of [ ]).
These are all shots in the dark. As the new echo stuff came from the traveller - it may well be that perhaps some Qugu or something related to them escaped the traveler (or the witness? the first time I saw it I thought they were dissidents who somehow fled) to land on Nessus and find a new way to survive. Who knows, this is as much as shot in the dark as any.

I'm super excited to see how our relationship with the light and dark evolves because of how different the qugus relationship with it is compared to ours.
This is definitely what was speaking in that one chapter of the Root of Nightmares lorebook.
The qugu are also the main perspective in the polychroma space ship lore tab but from their pov rather than the hive

This whole symbiotic/ritual sacrificing reminds me so much of the book Speaker for the Dead. It's the book after Ender's Game and it's really great. I'd be surprised if this lore wasn't at least partially inspired by that book.

Most certainly. I'm sure that this is how the third episode will connect us directly to frontiers where either the qugu will come to us or we will hijack the dreadnaught and head to them.

@@bren-rt2jm the end of the book has the main general escaping and even if they died, the rest of the planet is still alive and since their memories persist in a collective way the militaries memory of the events prolly invigorated their species to set up for a retaliation one day
@@bradyschulenberg6848 that just makes it more obvious that this is where they are going. Bungie wouldn't really introduce this massive lore for a race they were never planning on using again. I see it going as, the general escaped and perhaps made a pact with either the witness to become a disciple, or the winnower to bring his species back in some way.
@@alejandrocarralero2826 considering how distant the more witness/traveler based ideas of light and dark are absent from their culture and how far it sounds like they traveled with their ships I wouldn't be surprised if they were in a different galaxy altogether.

That's what I was thinking too, Time visions, borg like connection with the whole species, a "sleeve" that could be say a vex body that houses the radiolaria, Vex Gates/Se'Un Gate etc etc. obviously a stretch but its where my mind went too

With Savathun, maybe, helping us in the collapse, so that we didn't get completely destroyed. It would be interesting if the Qugu still lived some of the creatures in Destiny lore would be interesting to see in game.
At 6:45 it's important to not that it's deified not defied. Meaning it's not just a symbiotic relationship, it's a worship of these mollusks as deities or gods. Adds more to the idea that these mollusks are worshiped and the visions they give to the Qugu would be like that of a prophet receiving visions from a god. A Destiny Earth equivalent could be like that of the Traveler and the Speaker if the Traveler spoke or delivered visions to the Speaker. I love that we're getting more about the Darkness and we're learning about this species that used the darkness in a harmonic manner. Thanks so much for the breakdown of this info, I would have never guessed we'd get something like this if I didn't find you video! I'm really hoping that they steer the game towards our focus against the Winnower as time goes on.

This species sounds like a weird cross between the Flood and the Yuuzhan Vong, not necessarily functionally (but maybe a little) but more like aesthetically. Would be cool to see how they look.

@@xXx_Regulus_xXxhe basically created the original Psion Religion, that all beings have an aspect of the Dicine within them. In reality, this is a spark of Darkness, of Memory, that Nezarec can infect. Somehow the Psions realized they were being manipulated and suppressed this Religion. The Psion Conclave is trying to reignite it as it would strengthen Nezarec, ally of the Shadow Legion and Black Fleet once more.
Great direction for the lore considering we will likely expand beyond Sol.

To those who ask where the lorebook came from: You get one page for ending Act 1. It`s a bug (you probably should get them with finishing Act 2 and 3), but when you finish Act 1 with your other characters, you will get the rest.

We got Books of Sorrow 2.0 before GTAVI
Bungie's writing team is almost always on point. Hot take but even in light fall they did a good job, the expansion's only real issues storywise was the pacing being fucked up by all the glorified strand tutorials. Rohan's death wouldve been more impactful if we spent slightly more time with him so that we could understand Nimbus's greif better. Obviously we know Rohan was a fantastic dude and an inspiration to all, but cause we didnt get as much time with the side of him that Nimbus was endeared to it felt less personal. We should've been able to hear him talk about his life and the beauty of Neomuna in more detail, even if it was just in comms while we were doing our strand tutorials. Overall i think that Bungie's writing is the best when its getting personal and focusing on the interpersonal lives of its characters. Saint and Osiris are a great example of this (unless you think that queer people existing unapologetically in media is woke, which based on Nimbus's reception before lightfall even released and the constant crying abt Saint and Osiris's relationship being visible, is clearly a concerning amount of the community but i wont talk abt that any further cause it really just makes me sad)
