    Very cool. Always great to learn and see novel ways to do maths. People often believe they know just about everything about multiplcation and division but as you often demonstrate there are hundreds of ways to go about them. Each one fascinating in their own ways. :)
    Thanks for the great video.

      33288 / 57? I tried that. Took a pic of the mess it makes... If I can attach it, I will. Took several tries to get it right. Looks like I can attach anything else, other than a picture. Lol....

      He didn't mention it, but the dot method appears to be only good for determining whole number answers.

      @@zoranvucenovic3824 let's try something easy:23/2
      2 dots, 3 dots
      0 dots, 3 dots
      0 dots, 1 dot
      So 23/2=11 with a remainder of 1
      If you take the remainder as a number you can continue in the same way
      1 dot
      0 dots, 10 dots
      0 dots, 8 dots
      0 dots, 6 dots
      0 dots, 4 dots
      0 dots, 2 dots
      0 dots, 0 dots
      At this point you can clearly see
      That 23/2=11,5

    hello, how could you solve 44016 : 56 for example? there is not enough dot in the first line!

    • @janstella7839
      @janstella7839 3 роки тому +4

      You have to transform the first 4 dots in 40 dots under the second 4; you have then 44 dots, 0 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots;
      Now you need to bring 1 of the 44 dots to the next space, so it becomes 43 dots, 10 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots;
      You take out 5 dots from the 43 and 6 from the 10, so it becomes 38 dots, 4 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots;
      Now you continue this way until you finish all of your dots... The next passages should be:
      37 dots, 14 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      32 dots, 8 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      27 dots, 2 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      26 dots, 12 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      21 dots, 6 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      16 dots, 0 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      15 dots, 10 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      10 dots, 4 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      9 dots, 14 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      4 dots, 8 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      At this point you can't delete 5 dots from the first column so you bring 4 dots to 40 dots in the second column; you also should have the first digit of the result which is 7 (if I'm counting right)
      Then you continue from there:
      48 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      47 dots, 11 dots, 6 dots
      42 dots, 5 dots, 6 dots
      41 dots, 15 dots, 6 dots
      36 dots, 9 dots, 6 dots
      31 dots, 3 dots, 6 dots
      30 dots, 13 dots, 6 dots
      25 dots, 7 dots, 6 dots
      20 dots, 1 dot, 6 dots
      19 dots, 11 dots, 6 dots
      14 dots, 5 dots, 6 dots
      13 dots, 15 dots, 6 dots
      8 dots, 9 dots, 6 dots
      3 dots, 3 dots, 6 dots
      You now have the second digit of the result, which is 8.
      Now let's continue:
      33 dots, 6 dots
      28 dots, 0 dots
      27 dots, 10 dots
      22 dots, 4 dots
      21 dots, 14 dots
      16 dots, 8 dots
      11 dots, 2 dots
      10 dots, 12 dots
      5 dots, 6 dots
      0 dot, 0 dots
      The third digit of the result is 6
      So 44016/56=786
      In this case I would use the conventional method to make divisions in column as it should be faster.

      5 dots, 6 dots
      0 dots, 6 dots
      0 dots, 1 dot
      You can say 56/55=11 with a remainder of 1, but you can also continue in the same way:
      1 dot
      0 dots, 10 dots
      0 dots, 5 dots
      0 dots, 0 dots
      Sooo 56/5=11,
      (edit: 1 dots->1 dot)

    I'm old, having taught math both low and advanced, since 1968. And I struggled as a kid to have it make sense when I was first learning so it was never easy for me until it clicked, then it stuck and could explain it to anyone else. I keep an open mind to all methods of valid calculating and explaining same; however I call BS on this system. In what way is it more intuitive and faster and more effective than the old tried and true calcs of generations ago [which work EVERY time]? Go ahead, I'll wait. ;-))

    • @tecmath
      @tecmath  3 роки тому +6

      As I said in the video, I don't use it often - I find it interesting. Like multiplying using lines - interesting, visual - but too cumbersome for frequent use.
      Funnily though - I don't use the standard system taught for exactly the same reason.

    • @janstella7839
      @janstella7839 3 роки тому

      It's not that this method doesn't work everytime... It's just that it is tedious. I'm young, I have never taught math, but I would like to do so in my future, and I clearly see that it's just a way to visualize the normal method of generations ago. It could be more intuitive for someone who hasn't a mathematical mind, someone who need to visualize something to understand that. This method is just a subtraction method:
      69/23:
      69-23=46 -> 69/23=1+46/23
      46-23=23 -> 69/23=2+23/23
      23/23=1 -> 69/23=3
      Edit: I'm not sustaining this method, I prefer to divide and multiply numbers in my mind. I personally wouldn't ever use this method, but for someone that can't abstract numbers it should be better.

    • @safepethaven
      @safepethaven 3 роки тому

      @@janstella7839 You're struggling to see the power of the "old school" method because when properly introduced, it covered the background or "dots" to represent the columns of the various tens places; pnce mastered then the operations were structured in the most efficient way. Only the very simplest of arithmetic is intended to do in one's head, that is why the structured method, written, will always work in the real number system, even the longest or most complicated. Teaching the WHY as well as the HOW was done a long time ago but has been dropped over the years. So wrong.

    This method can even be used for fractions where the answer is less than 1.
    Take something simple like 3/4
    First, we do 3 dots, obviously.
    ooo
    Now, we can't join 4 dots to 3, so, we already know that there are 0 connections for the first row. So, the first part of our answer is 0
    We simply treat the 3 as 30 x 0.1, by adding 30 dots to a second row.
    xxx
    oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    Now, we can simply join 4 dots at a time from the 30 dots:
    xxx
    *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* oo
    We have 7 connections, with 2 remaining dots.
    We can then convert these 2 dots representing 2 x 0.1, to 20 x 0.01, by adding a 3rd row of 20 dots.
    xxx
    *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* xx
    oooooooooooooooooooo
    Now, if we connect 4 dots at a time, we get:
    xxx
    *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* oo
    *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo* *oooo*
    From this, we can see 0 connections from the first row, 7 connections from the second row, and 5 connections from the third row, therefore, 3/4 = 0.75

    This is Probally one of many of Tecmath's dissertation/thesis on his masters and or doctorate degree? 🤔
    The man reallly understand his math, considering the fact it might open the doors applying this methodology to physics? For example... Conversion of Dec # to Binary # and Hex #.
    365 = 1 0110 1101 = 16D.
    Just saying 🤔
