They say "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." In this case, it's true. At 62, I can't get my head to memorise this. Can still do long multiplication with ease. And at speed.
it's ok... this "trick" just makes use of a little extra mental math and less writing. it can be faster that way, but you are still doing the same number of digit multiplications and additions.

As a math teacher im going to tell you that this will confuse the heck out of my students...take about two weeks to teach and then take away from any learning that can happen further. Shortcuts are great, i teach them when i can...but if all you teach is shortcuts then how will someone apply the knowledge to higher learning. I do understand that not a high portion of students will go on to high levels of mathematics, but there are those that might even though they don't think they will yet. The more you ignore fundamentals and focus on fast pathway shortcuts....the harder it is for students to grasp more complicated things. Having said that, this is a fun trick.

And that could happen but at that point i would probably defer them to a video (this one perhaps) so that im not cutting into class time with a shortcut rather than something new. I appreciate the fact that you were asking in a respectful way btw. And by no means do i have a problem with someone disagreeing with me. This is my opinion and nothing more and i try to use discourse in the class to teach something.
I agree, this is faster but not necessarily easier . Stick with the way you're taught till it's learned, then on your own learn the short cuts. Faster is not equal to better.
It's not a "shortcut" and you are still applying mathematical knowledge. PLACE VALUE. Tens times Hundreds, equals Thousands. How do you teach 8 x 12? ((8x10) + (8x2)) = 80+16=96 --- OR --- 8x2 --> 16 (carry the one, 1_) ---> 8x10= 80 ---> 80 + 1_ = 90 ---> 90 + _6 = 96
The former applies basic knowledge of addition and multiplication (while still applying place value, but ignoring explaining such). The latter involves knowledge of place value. It requires knowledge of place value and applying such to get to the answer. It's not a substitute for knowledge, it actually requires more knowledge to make the calculation potentially easier and quicker given the numbers involved.
@@apieceofschmitt im not entirely in disagreement with you. However, the way it was expressed was as a faster process. Individuals comment why didnt my teacher go over this. Now, its a great thing to teach, in no way would I argue against that. But the time to learn ratio would be very high and take away from other aspects. I do believe in working on fundamentals with individuals whenever they are needed, but the whole year cant be just fundamentals at a high school level. This is a weighted subject (teaching in general i mean) with a lot of factors that go into what we need to have students do. I get students coming in with numeracy deficiencies that are extreme to put lightly (i teach at high school level). That is not to say they are dumb. They are actually very intelligent. This was just never a priority in their community. So by the time i get through making this make sense to the majority of the students, we will have lost time to other things.
Just because you're maths teacher doesn't mean you're always right lol... Different people different methods. Simple as that
My maths teacher’s favourite was this one. Noah is sending the animals out from the Ark after arriving on dry ground. “Go forth and multiply” he tells them. But the snakes say “we can’t, we’re adders”. Ok, that was in year 7. Then in year 8, he added the response from Noah, “well, use logs”. That was in the 60s.

Normally, I really love your tips and tricks. But this one involves remembering too much hinkery pinkery for me. I find it easier and faster to do it the old way. But I'm sure that for those with more short term memory capacity this might be a fun method. That being said, keep up the good work!

I understand that. In my free time I am writing in math problems and trying to solve them. It is more math problems than I ever did in school, and I am doing them for fun.
Honestly I question why they don’t implement this into the school system and teach us in this instead? Your strategies work way better and faster
Educationalists know about this method but it doesn't address the bedrock of Mathematics - Place Value. Otherwise let's just let the kids use calculators.
Because, the powers that be decided that Math is suppose to be a multiple choice question instead.
Learning is not just about what works fast. It's understanding the concepts too. The long process gives you understanding which is necessary for those that will teach, and develop short methods like the teacher of this video.

This is way harder than starting in the ones column and then the tens colum, then the hundreds then the thousands. Always remembering anytime you make a number bigger than ten you carry that one to the next column

All in all, this method has just the same amount of math, but _can_ be done faster, just only because there's more at once, and it's much more in your head, and less on paper.

I just learned on your video how to multiply 3 digits number the fastest way, my head was spinning but after rewatching multiple times, I finally got it. Now you came up with 4 digits? Slow down dude! Because now I’m feeling dizzy 😵💫 😆
Is it actually easier. You are just moving when you do the addition or multiplication.
Haven’t done any real testing, but I would imagine that this should be faster because you can do more things in your head so you end up having to write a lot less which should save you some time assuming that it takes you the same amount of time to do the calculations.
I am a tiny bit confused, but I think it is because my brain is happy with the normal method and refuses to learn new things....

I've seen a previous video you've done for this method (for 3x3 digit numbers I think) but where you work it out R to L rather than L to R as here. Just wondering why L to R?

Right to left, or left to right, it doesn’t matter with this method. You get the same result
I think the reason he did left to right here is because of the carryovers. Much easier to add the carryovers in if you’re going left to right, instead of right to left,
Working these out how you show us is actually addictive and you want to try more and I'm kak at math!
This is a great shortcut for people who already understand long multiplication BUT, as a former teacher, I know this would not work as a replacement for it. If people don’t understand the fundamentals, they can’t apply their learning to harder concepts. They’d be great at doing speedy calculations and terrible when it comes to actually using multiplication for anything harder.
I noticed that you started 3124*2152 from the left, but I personally would start from the right and work with any carries along the way.

I mean.... Getting a very high IQ is probably impossible if your brain is fully developed and you don't have the genes for it. This just made you better at mulitiplication, your IQ didn't increase at all.... Yoi just learnt a method to solving a problem.
@@septicon1248 Agreed! Every study shows that IQ is mostly genetics; somebody with down syndrome will never have a high IQ no matter how many puzzles you give that person.

Like the way you do this but my old brain didn't work that fast. I'll have to work on it.
I used this method on my test, I got only 1 out of 3 because of the wrong method this world is cruel
Teachers always ask us to show our work back when I was in school. This wouldn't work in my math class. Not sure about kids now in school.
This, or the lattice method, are much quicker than the old traditional 'right to left' way
Doing math by hand is obsolete until the next z Carrington event.

No it's fine... but obviously increases the chance of a mistake.
@@tecmath can you please give us an example. I trying to teach my daughter this way and it’s going well but we come to a stand still when we add and the number ends up being 3 digits.
@@nundipatrick8797 It goes the way it normally goes, put down the first digit(ones/unit digit) and carry the rest. For example if you end up with say 273, put the 3 as you normally would and carry 27.
Yes, it is weird because you don't need to carry two digits when doing it the standard way.

Right to left only requires one final number, the answer, to be written so it's faster.

Try left to right that's reliable
Put down the ones/unit digit as you normally would and carry the rest.
For example if you get 138, put down 8 normally and carry 13(Yup it is weird.)

I'm guessing just because it requires a little too much mental maths juggling in your head. Only the very best maths students would manage this without error. Otherwise I would TOTALLY advocate teaching it.

I love Math party tricks, but you aren't teaching Place Value which is why the longer approach was implemented in educational systems throughout the world.
Place value can be taught in this, but that is better doing right to left.

This is why must learn 1-9x multiplication and learn to add.
If you get it wrong you will never know without calculator, doing it the long way or long decision.

Okay so, basically the way you did this math is that you do the same amount of math all in all, but this method is done more in your head than on paper, and done more all at once, so technically it kind of can be faster, but it's the same amount of math, just a lot crammed together. I see the appeal for those who can and _want_ to do it more quickly by not writing it down and instead doing it in your head, but for those starting multiplication, it's much easier to do it the more traditional method, because it's done more slowly, and then you don't have to remember as much all at once as well. That's the difference.
All in all, this method is the same amount of math, but can be done faster, just because there's more at once and it's much more in your head, less on paper.
Nice trick, but not very reliable when the numbers get bigger so sticking with the technique taught in school would be more viable

How come only 1-5 digits are only used? Im assuming 6-9 digits may make it harder to keep track.
You can extend the method infinitely, it just takes longer.
